I would give zero stars if I could. Which is so sad, because before Friday 7/24, I would have given them a solid 5 stars. It was a disaster from the moment we were seated. Had to wait 10 minutes just for waiter to come to table to ask for our drinks. And he didn't even bring the chips and salsa (we had to ask when he came back with the drinks, including forgetting two waters). Then, when we ordered our food, it took 30 minutes to get the food. Mind you, the place was only 20% capacity. Our waiter walked by multiple times and didn't even check on us. Then, when the food was served, they forgot my meal completely, and my wife's fajita steak, which was ordered med-rare, came completely over-well done. She requested a replacement, which then showed up burnt on the surface, and raw cold in the middle. And I still didn't get my food. No apologies were offered, no discounts or removal of any meal charges. I've messaged them on FB Messenger and wrote my review on their FB page, since they don't have an email address. sad reality is I don't think I'm alone in my recent experience. My wife and I had this place as our go-to mexican restaurant, dating back to when they were next to the comic book store. I'll be asking around the 08822 area for new mexican restaurant recommendations, because as far as I'm concerned, Viva Mexico has no life left in it. read more

I used to love this place. The food used to be excellent. Last night we got burritos with shrimp in them. The shrimp was so beyond overcooked. They were dark brown and hard. Burritos did not taste like they used to.. I was so disappointed. I called to let them know that the shrimp was extremely overcooked and should never have been served. The girl who answered the phone. Gave her apology, but it wasn't very convincing. Unfortunately I will not be back. read more

I used to love this place but the last time I came, it took the waitress 10 minutes to come to our table. It wasn't very busy during this time since we came around 3pm. I ordered the burrito and it wasn't very tasty at all. I had to ask for more hot sauce. I'm willing to give it another try but we will see. read more

My wife and I were in town to check out the car show. We decided to try a new (to us) restaurant. They brought out fresh chips and salsa. The chips were warm, not overly salty, and crispy. The salsa was fresh, delicious and had a bit of heat. For our entrees, my wife went with the Plato Combinado where you choose three items from burrito, enchilada, chimichanga and tamale. I chose the blackened chicken special, which is boneless chicken breast cooked in different types of dry mexican chiles, served over rice, with veggies on the side. For dessert, we split a tres leches cake. The staff were very friendly. They were quick to bring out more chips while we waited for our entrees. The interior is in an old house. There is also outdoor seating out front and out back. Everything was delicious. We will definitely return. read more

Great spot with a great atmosphere! The food at viva is delicious and it is a great spot to sit and eat outside during the spring, summer, early fall months. Their fresh pico de gallo is great, so is the guac. The chimichanga with cheese are incredible and the fajitas are fan favorites with my friends and family. This was our first time at Viva Mexico since they switched locations, and we really enjoyed it! Food: both of our dishes had incredible sauces. The salsa verde on the chilaquiles was delicious and the sauce on the mojo de ajo exceeded our expectations. The shrimp was cooked perfectly and so was the steak. Service: the gentleman that sat us and took our order was very kind and checked in on us to see if we needed anything. Our food came out really quickly as well which was nice. This is my second review of this restaurant but this is my first time in their new location. They are now located in a renovated Victorian home on Main St. We came on a Sunday in October. Their was plenty of parking still available in the back parking lot but at 6pm, they were starting to get busy. I think we got seated and ordered in the nick of time. The interior is beautifully renovated with new flooring throughout and a fresh coat of paint on every surface. They made a special effort in decorating for Dia de Los Muertos and we LOVED it! It was very festive and they had great music playing in the background. We still love the chips and salsa that come out as soon as you sit down. I could seriously just eat that for dinner! The service was quick when it came to taking our orders but it still takes quite a while for your food to come out of the kitchen. The service also drops off after you place your initial order and if the place gets busy, forget it. Bring your patience. The food still tastes great and is authentic. We got our usual entrees, chicken enchiladas, which are always good. I recommend the salsa verde sauce on top of those. This time we also tried two new dishes in addition to the enchiladas - Camerones Al Mojo de Ajo (shrimp) and Bistek a la Mexicana (steak). We loved the sauce that came with the shrimp and the mixed vegetables, which were cooked crisp tender. The steak was good but it's not my favorite preparation. The meat was a little tough and the sauce was a little to smokey for us. Somebody else might love it though. Next time we'll go with the Tampiquena. read more

Friendly service, lovely decor and tasty food. I had chicken fajita and their take on it was bigger chunks rather than thinly sliced pieces (see picture) which I would have preferred. They were busy and service took a long time. I am not writing this to complain! It gave us time to hang out with our kids rather than rushing through dinner. If I had remembered to bring a bottle of wine it would also be a good way to fill the time while waiting for the food. Ultimately it is worth the wait. I would recommend Viva Mexico to anyone! My husband, his parents, and I have been going to Viva Mexico for decades in their three different locations, and we have always been very happy. It's our go-to Mexican restaurant in NJ. We have always gone for lunch, and it has always been calm and pleasant, so I can not comment on the dinnertime ambiance, not having gone for dinner. Luch service is always prompt and efficient. It's BYOB, so my husband puts some margaritas in a thermos, and it is a good Mexican food accompaniment. I am a creature of habit and always order the beef sopas, which you do not see anywhere else. My more adventurous husband tries the different dishes, specials included, and has never been disappointed. We finish with coffee and churrros with vanilla ice cream, which are always delicious. We've been coming here since they were in Turntable Junction. This place has been going down hill ever since they moved to Main St. We came here last week for the last time. I ordered the Paella ($30 special) and my husband ordered a plato combinado. His food and beans were good, but the rice was a mushy mess with a heavy tinny canned sauce flavor. The packaged rice you get in a supermarket is 1000 times better and I would have prefwerred that compared to what they served. The paella was severely lacking in seafood and flavor. The mussles had obviously been frozen, because they were shriveled up and stringy inside, so they were inedible. One mussel was even shut, which is a big no no for serving. The paella came with a small portion of the disgusgting mushy rice in the center. I took two bites and couldn't even choke it down, so I left hungry after ordering $30 meal. The place was empty with only a few other cusomers, but the service was poor and extremely slow. I was planning to let the manager know I was disapointed with the meal, but the waitress cleared the table without even asking how everything was or even asking if we wanted a to go container (which we obviously didn't). As we walked out, the manager was nowhere to be found. If I could rate this 0 stars, I would. Viva Mexixo has lost longtome customers thanks to this horrible experience. read more

VIVAAA this restaurant! It's been around for years and the high quality ingredients is probably the reason why. Came here tonight and it was 70% full (good for this area of NJ) on a Friday night around 7pm. We sat down to complimentary chips and salsa. Their salsa is my FAVORITE! Super zippy and delicious with big chunks of tomato and small diced white onion. My mom and I always order the same things every time we come because they're just done so well! My mom gets the Chile Rellenos-- I've been to different parts of Mexico a dozen times and their Chile Rellenos beats anyone else's in Mexico hands down! I order the Enchiladas Verdes with shredded chicken. I loveeeee their chicken because it's all white meat (no chance of chomping on a weird hard piece of cartilage) and extremely juicy. The verde is their green salsa-- it's delightfully zippy, tangy and flavorful. Three enchiladas come on a plate for a very affordable $13.50. Side of the BEST beans ever. Oh and rice too, which was cooked to perfection. The owner's daughter is one of the waitresses and so sweet. So is all of the waitstaff. Way to go guys! SECRET: Ask for their "extra hot sauce". My husband and I are big Mexican foodies, we both found the food Delicious and Appealling. We sat in their outdoor seating area, which is adorable and clean. The host and waitress were Beyond thoughtful, always saying excuse me, checking on drink needs consistently, made sure I had my extra salsa, the food was Delicious and they were so kind and friendly - always smiling "its so beautiful out today!" And "hope you have a nice day!". I returned alone for lunch afew days later, sat indoors (cute decor and clean tables), ordered the same item and got a single portion this time, still Delicious! Different server (no host) and he was Just as obliging! I Will 100% return to this restaurant when in town again. Highly reccomend. Located in the sleepy 1960's Turntable Junction spot, Viva Mexico is a gem if you love authentic homestyle Mexican food. As customer for many years, I've tried just about every item on the menu and haven't ever been disappointed. Whether you order in or take out - something for everyone. If you order take-out....do yourself a favor and ask for a large side of their fresh pico de gallo salsa (not on the menu). Just the right amount of heat - my teenage son just sits there and wants to eat the whole container with their amazing tortilla chips! If you have picky small kids (or significant other!) - ask for the cheese sincronizada (also not on the menu) which is an American style quesadilla. Wait staff is always friendly and helpful ! Zero Stars if I could. Went today on a slow Sunday evening. Sat down ordered our food and it took 45-55 minutes for our food to come out, unacceptable. I understand if your busy but there were only 2 other tables and they had 2 servers. At that point I had lost my appetite but the food was nothing to amaze over. My pork loin with rice & beans definitely not worth a $15-16 dish. $10 tops. Meat and beans were dry. To top off my night was they did not accept my Yelp check in offer of 10% because they said it "expired". I showed both waiters my phone and they both told me they don't accept Yelp deals. You would think you they would accept it at least this one time since I had it. Nope, they just denied the check in offer completely. Very shady operation if you ask me. People see the check in offer and it incentivized someone to come to your restaurant. Changing it up like this is complete Bait & Switch sales tactic. Horrible. As a side note, they do charge if you ask for extra Pico ($2) and also extra chips ($1.5) so tread carefully. read more

Viva Mexico has been our go to Mexican restaurant for years (3 locations now). Their new location is awesome! Great patio space and plenty of tables indoors. The service is always awesome from a table of 2 to the time we had 16 people there. My favorite here are the Chiles rellenos. My family also loves the carne asada. Viva Mexico is a nice establishment. Its tucked away in the back of a set of stores. We have been here previously for lunch but were in the area and decided to stop by for dinner. Its important to note that the lunch menu is different from dinner. Some items, such as the street tacos, are completely absent from the dinner menu. Was kind of bummed about no tacos. The menu is also very small, which isnt always a bad thing, but some people dont care for that. Very few vegetarian options. However the food was good, staff is friendly, the portions and prices are about average. Very tasty items. Would come back again, but probably for lunch. The tacos are bomb. read more
