REVIEW #1000! My…read moresiblings and I like to donate blood together, and so my brother and I decided to come here and give platelets. I had only donated with the Red Cross once back in college, so this was my first time doing platelets at a donation center. I didn't even know they had them, I thought they only did mobile drives. But it makes sense since platelet donations are only done at a center. It was easy to create an account and schedule an appointment online. I like that I could add my donor id to my phone wallet, since they ask for it at checkin and during the interview process. The center is easy to locate and parking was plentiful. We signed in at the front desk and got name tags, which was a thoughtful touch. We were told it would be a bit of a wait since they had a big rush of donors come in. We sat in the waiting area for 30 minutes until our names were called. The interview process went smoothly and I absolute love their hemoglobin tester! No finger pricks here and my level was healthy. I also like that they do a temperature check using a forehead thermometer, so there's no need to remove my mask. Sandy was funny and personable and I enjoyed having her throughout my donation process. She was attentive and made sure I had everything I needed, including a warmed blanket and tums for the tingling. The donation chairs each have their own tv screen and headphones, which is great because giving platelets here requires a needle in both arms, so you aren't free to use one to read a book or use a device. My donation took 116 minutes, so I watched a movie on Netflix to help the time pass by (though I could hear it fine, the volume level was not adjustable from the remote). Tori helped me when I finished and was great. They have a nice selection of snacks in the canteen area plus water and juices, so I enjoyed a tropical punch, cheezits, and some pretzels. The staff gave us a nice bag and these plastic popcorn containers as a gift for our first platelet donation with them, which was an unexpected surprise. Overall, it was a positive experience despite the wait time and two arm donation. The staff was great and helpful and I'm glad we were able to donate here! Go donate blood/platelets if you can :-)

Every time he has to have bloodwork done at Sonora Quest the techs there never have a problem finding a vein - easy peasy. Yesterday (Sunday) they "blew out his vein" in his right arm. They had 4 techs trying to locate a vein. It's to the point now he no longer wants to donate blood at this facility. He may give them one more try but in the meantime we are searching for another facility.

The really short Native American phlebotomist really cute she's super sweet and very nice, the management team are very nice as well, the Puerto Rican or Dominican phlebotomist that's very light skinned with the dark hair she's nice and sweet as well she always remembers I need something to squeeze before pumping, the black male I think he might e Puerto Rican as well always wearing nice shoes he's very nice also. Those are my top favorites, when doing vitals I gotta give a shot out to a few and unfortunately don't know their names which I need to start doing. The big guy he's super friendly and come to find out we have the same birthday and he calls me up by name, there's the older woman who is super duper sweet and once again I'm sorry I forgot her name but I love when I'm at her booth. Just an all out friendly facility, I use to donate at CSL Plasma and they took away platinum donors getting express passes so and their staff are always either mad or tired. I had a nightmare experience at this place. The equipment is questionable and the female techs…read moreabsolutely butchered me. My first visit to Octapharma in Mesa wasn't bad. The sign up and initial checkup procedure was pretty smooth, and I had a male phlebotomist who was great. The clientele was a bit sketchy, but I was in and out of the donation chair, feeling good and on my way in 35 minutes. My second visit was a different story. It was busier... and I was assigned to a kind of big girl with a sticker on her face shield that said something like "I hate my life, but at least I'm caffeinated". Very professional. I offered her my right arm that has a huge vein and said "you really can't miss that one hunh?" She replied "Oh you'd be surprised", which didn't exactly instill me with confidence about her abilities. She stuck in the needle and walked away and it was just me and the machine. I looked around. There was a short blonde girl with what looked like glitter in her hair that seemed to be enjoying her day, singing and bopping around despite working in this bizarre environment. My donation didn't seem to be going as smoothly or quickly as the first time. The numbers were ticking up slower than before. Then my machine beeped loudly.. "uh oh" I thought. Then another beep. I looked around and glitter girl was glaring at me and making the pump your fist signal. She didn't seem friendly or happy anymore. I raised my eyebrows and pumped. Then things seemed to take a significant turn for the worse. A different more insistent beep began and a girl with the name tag "Lead Phleb" came over and said "we're going to try your other arm". Ok. But then after removing the needle she said... "Oh crap your blood pressure cuff wasn't velcroed tight". So chunky caffeinated shield girl did in fact blow it. So Lead Phleb hooked up my left arm and things seemed ok. I slowly but surely made it to 93% of my donation goal, but then the machine started beeping again. Something wasn't right. At this point I should have walked out. Especially once Lead Phleb informed me that she was going to search for a mysterious, but not visible second vein in my left arm. She felt around with a Qtip and tried to stick me a little.. no luck. She went to look for the manager lady, but she had gone on her lunch break. At this point the procedure basically turned into an assault as glitter girl came over to "help" and jabbed the razor sharp needle deep into my arm twice, shrugged and walked away. I managed to not scream, but was in shock at what had just happened. Lead phleb looked as horrified as me and said "Uh yeah we're going to go ahead and abort.. you'll still get paid." Yeah... no sh*t!! Then she asked me how I'm feeling. I didn't feel well. I was very light headed and cold and sweating all at once. Lead Phleb asks me if I've ever had a "blood loss" before... because apparently not all of my blood was returned to my body before she disconnected the machine. What? In addition she explains that I'm probably going to have "some bruising" and that she'll give me a flyer on how to care for it. I'm pretty angry at this point. Glitter girl has disappeared. I later read online that other people have complained about her doing things like this. She is apparently some kind of psychopath maybe?! I got the hell out of there and did my best to recuperate in my car... drinking water and trying to feel well enough to drive. Within a half hour of returning home my left arm started to swell and turn red. My arm felt all sliced up inside and blood was pooling under the skin. I considered a trip to the emergency room, but I'm currently uninsured and decide to tough it out. I began icing and elevating it. By the next day my arm was black and blue, swollen and quite painful. On the day after that, my arm was even worse and looked like the pictures above. Holding my phone to type was agony. I was taking pain medication and mostly just lying in bed trying to get better for several days. Feeling normal and pain free took three weeks. Any exercise made me lightheaded. I had to take iron pills to try to get my hemoglobin back up. I have vowed to never let a needle near my arm again. All in all... a nightmare experience. I barely made any money and I ended up enduring enough pain and suffering that I considered whether I should contact a lawyer or maybe even press charges for assault against glitter girl. Octapharma is a multi billion dollar a year company. You'd think that they could afford to hire and train a semi professional staff and have a supervisor around at all times, but that is clearly not the case... at least not at this location. Avoid!

I see her there in the evenings: brunette, wavy Hair, ponytail, middle-aged. She told me my protein is low and that I need to build it up, which is fine and totally understandable. Thank you for looking out. The problem that I have is that the whole time she just has this attitude I dealt with her before; she just has an attitude problem. Everyone there's nice and she just has this attitude like she just doesn't wanna be there. When I asked her questions, I asked her why nobody called me because I had to make arrangements to make sure that I made my appointment today; if they would've called me that would've been beneficial for me. She got an attitude and she told me that she could show me the log; they did call me and maybe it's because my voicemail is full or I changed my phone number. Immediately putting it on me, trying to gaslight me. I told her, " No, I've had the same phone number for 30 years and my voicemail is not full. " She proceeded to tell me that she's the only one there and people are waiting. I told her there was no need to be rude and defensive. She says she was not being rude, defensive. I told her, well, I'm taking it that way because of her tone. I wasn't even taking much of her time we were in consult for 5 minutes maybe; she made me wait and then she just wants to dismiss me, when I said it would of been nice to get a call. I'm not upset that I wasn't able to donate. I don't care. I don't have to do this. It's just her attitude, and it's a long time coming, because I dealt with her before and she's been rude. So this is just pertaining to her everyone else has been nice. Sincerely, Cruz Knight UPDATE- When I got home, I checked. Somebody did call in the morning, but they didn't leave a message. It would have been nice if they had left a message. They just said hello, and that's it. Attaching a screenshot of the call.

It worked out that we could schedule platelet appointments on Halloween, so we snagged some afternoon times. I arrived early and was greeted by the friendly front desk manager. I didn't wait long to be taken back to my interview room. Again, my iron was low on the first attempt but it was higher on the second, so I was cleared to donate. Yay! My phlebotomist was great and dressed in costume, which was fun. My donation process went smoothly and it was shorter than usual, which I appreciated. The supervisor who wrapped up my donation got me taken care of. The canteen area is nice and stocked with a variety of snacks and drinks. They have a drink machine where you choose a pouch of tea, coffee or hot chocolate and it makes it. Never seen this kind before. Also a popcorn machine which is one of my favorite post-donation snacks, along with the electrolyte packets. I have been coming here for over a year since March, and I've gotten to know some of the people…read morethere, and of the people I've gotten to know, including the people that has to in the initial testing rooms to see if you're good to donate and the people in the back that stick you with the needle, are all very nice and funny. I myself have had a few minor anxiety issues in the past, with passing the blood pressure portion of the test in which case I have been above the highest I can be at and have failed so it has not helped me keep positive mental focus on being able to go back, but that's on me, not on them. But the women that I have tested with regularly, work with me on my anxiety issues which I think is very cold and very much appreciated and they're all funny and I've had conversations with all of them, and the people in the back have awesome senses of humor as well and are very cool, and are very nice and cordial when sticking you, and they change their gloves out for every new person that they work with, they make sure all the accessories that are used when donating are in good enough condition and they check to make sure everything is going to go OK. I did yes, have a bad stick ones from someone that was relatively new there, and in doing so, they had to take it out of my right arm which is the arm or use most often, and had to stick me in the left and because I accepted doing that, I still got for pay for going through that day, but because my left arm is not as applicable to stick as my right arm, I ended up having an ice pack but on both arms and having some incidental swelling go down, but I don't necessarily pin that on them, and I do not define it as being a bad place by one bad situation, that's just immature. I continue to go back, and that one new person that stopped me from my previous story above, I let do it to me a second time because I thought he deserves a second chance and everything went fine and it was OK afterwards. I'm sure the wait times that some people complain about, or understandable and the time you have to wait, but I'm sure they have a system they have to go by to make sure when people are OK to move forward with the process and that the people that complain about the wait time are either inpatient or don't understand that I'm sure everyplace has some kind of process to make sure people get in when they can and when it's available. I don't usually give five stars to most things because five stars in my mind is perfect, and as corny as it sounds, I don't believe in perfection, but I think some of the reviews of this place because I go there, are kind of bull crap and probably put up by some impatient and immature people, so I'm writing it as good as I believe it gets. And despite how big this review is, I consider it a pretty thorough one talking about how I like this place and why, and sharing some hopeful common sense laid on the bad reviews, because I don't think it's as bad as they think it is.
