I'm not absolutely certain how I started going there, perhaps convenience, but when I started to need help with reading there is where I went. After so many years the service has never once wavered. If I was dealing with Dave and learning about contact lenses, he was patient and helped me every step of the way until I found the ones that worked best for me. Dan is the consummate professional, and never forgets names, faces or to ask how the rest of the family are doing. Dawn is my personal fashion and design assistant. She knows what works for me and what my style esthetic is. But she also will pull things that are out of the box that I will love but may not have noticed on my own. And what's so important is that she knows what I don't like on my face, anything that's too small. She's honest enough to tell me when I try a frame that I like but it's not the right size for my face, rather than letting me buy something that reflects badly on me and then on the business as well, she will tell me "that's to small of a frame" and I am very grateful regardless of how much I may like the frame. Are the glasses more expensive than other glasses? Perhaps. But you aren't just buying a name for a names sake.You are truly buying the very best companies of their kind in the world. Names that are known by people who truly know quality as opposed to a label. And to be perfectly honest on the occasion when I have gone and bought glasses at a chain( because I was using my insurance at that time, buy the time everything was added up, there wasn't much of a difference really in cost. I have been going to Gary Optical on and off for years. They have always been very professional and…read morego out of their way to meet the clients needs. About a year and a half ago I returned to Gary's after moving back to Lewiston with a new script. I explained to Gary that I was going out of town for the Christmas holidays and really hoped I could get the new glasses since I was having difficulty with my current script. This was on a Wednesday and I was leaving on the following Monday. I picked up the new glasses on Saturday. Another time the lens fell out of the frame and the screw was lost. It was late in the day and I got to Gary's about 5 or 10 minutes after they had closed. The lights where still on so I knocked on the door. Gary let me in and fixed my glasses within 10 minutes. For that first pair, my family dutifully shuttled down to Sterling Optical, then occupying prime real estate in the Boulevard Mall. For my second pair of glasses, we visited Phil Best at Main Optical, and we haven't looked back. In the time Phil Best has occupied his shop just off of Main Street, the street has been widened, bars have come and gone, children have grown up, moved away, and started families of their own. Throughout, he has provided the same level of dependable service, expertly and comprehensively walking customers through the selection of lenses, frames, contacts, accessories, and so forth. He offers support for his frames and lenses throughout their lifetime and also boasts a room ready to perform eye examinations once a week (I believe). Phil carries a fairly wide selection of high end and more affordable frames considering the size of his shop, but fashionistas may require him to order less conventional frames. This location is only open Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at present. He operates another location Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.
