Frame selection almost feels like a step back to the 1970's/80's with really 1-to-1 service. Frames were ready three days after purchase, and they looked great! Overall dealing with this store was a disappointing experience. For the prices of the glasses this is a luxury store and I would expect great service. The store owner is very talented at picking out glasses for customers but the customer service could use work. I was sold a pair of eyeglasses that were discontinued and eventually would not be able to be repaired. I brought the glasses in several times within the year to be repaired because the same piece continued to break. The final time I brought them in she informed me they didn't make them anymore, she continues to tell me the glasses had a one year warranty. The owner only mentioned this to me once the year had passed, even though I had been in several times over the past year. Great product but very disappointing service. read more

I personally have never worn glasses, and I'm not good at evaluating what does or does not look good on someone else. Thankfully, you don't need to be to go to Helene - she will take care of you! For those who are going to be put off by an opinionated eyewear specialist, I would find a different shop. For those who are going to value the opinions of an expert and appreciate the help in making a choice about what you're going to wear on your face every day for the next few years, Helene is going to be your new BFF. She certainly does take what you say into account in terms of your personal style, but she's going to push you to consider options that you might not necessarily have been drawn to initially. Try it all out! Explore your options! Though with Helene in charge, you might find that her first choice is your perfect pair...that was the case for my husband! She picked out a pair that we initially thought mighty be a bit too trendy for him. He's always been a more traditional rectangular, simple frame kind of guy, and at other places we've always been told that our options are more limited because his eyes are terrible and he needs very high index lenses. Helene helped us pick out a rounder more trendy frame (not super hipster huge, but with a little bit of that stylish vibe in the shape). She makes the lenses in house, and was able to accommodate us with thinner lenses than he usually gets! No idea how, but we love it. Don't quote me, but I believe there was a two year warranty for scratches? Additionally, when we paid for my husband's last pair of glasses at a different shop there was a $950 price tag because of the specialty high index lenses; not sure how, but Helene was able to give us literally hundreds of dollars off that price point. We will certainly be coming back to Helene for all of his future eyewear needs. read more

I know what I like and haven't worn glasses for too long. I am never 100% sure if I pick the right glasses out for myself. Helene is amazing at picking out what suits you! Helene helped me buy my first pair of glasses back in 1997. I moved to New York City and then the Bay Area In California. There is no shortage of high end boutiques out here, easily 4 in my neighborhood, one being where my optician is. There are designer frames but no one knows how to fit glasses like Helene. They can't make a good recommendation. Instead, they say try on as many you like, then gladly sell them to you if you manage to find a pair after wasting a huge amount of time with ones that don't fit or look ridiculous. I tried that trendy Warby Parker store, and was told glass frame are getting bigger, so the old goal to have your eye in the middle of the lens might not work out anymore, to get me to keep some ill fitting ones. (Also - don't bother with their "progressive lenses." they are the worst quality, with a nauseating amount of distortion. Don't settle for that.) I was completely delighted to revisit Frame Up again last week. Helene is a genius. She showed me two frames right off the bat that both looked amazing! I bought one, she shipped them to me in California, and they just arrived. They haven't even been adjusted and I love them. These are my first progressive glasses (bi-focals, but without the line), there was s NO distortion. They are the easiest things to wear. I don't need to move my entire head to point a small area of the glasses to see things like they told me at WP I would need to do. Don't waste your time going elsewhere. I will make a point to go in every time I visit my family back there, stock up on as many pairs can, and pray Helene never retires! (Or maybe gets an amazing apprentice?) read more

From the moment I walked in the door the woman maning the shop was extremely rude to myself and my mother. When we tried to look at frames she declared that this was not a place where you can touch the frames, that she would choose for me. When we asked if she carried unique glasses she insisted we would find nothing else like them, which is true. However, after telling her that big bulky frames were not what I was looking for, that they do not complement my face well, she insisted that she could find something for me. She proceeded to show me bulky frame after bulky frame insisting they were not, and that she only sold "high fashion" frames and that what I wanted was "old fashioned," and if I wanted something small and rectangular I should go to lens crafters. I have never had a more unpleasant and insulting experience. read more

I too previously went to Buffalo Optical in Williamsville and also wanted trendier glasses. Helene was perfect and selected a number of frames that looked great and then we found THE ONE! It was like an instant facelift! They are by far the best glasses I have ever owned. I would recommend her 100% to anyone willing to walk a little on the wilder side and who appreciates truly fine eyewear and service. As for the "frame nazi" designation- not in the least, she is a genuinely nice person and gifted in eyewear selection. I discovered Helene at the Frame Up when I was living in Buffalo 9 years ago and since moving to San Francisco, I still always get my frames through her. She has a nearly mystical ability to extremely quickly assess the most flattering and unusual frames for you. She seems psychic to me as she somehow understands your style preferences without you saying a word. The selection is superb and of all the glasses shopping I have done in NYC, LA, SF, and Rome, still frames from Helene at the Frame Up are hands down the best. I encourage my friends to go in there whenever they pass through Buffalo. Truly, a special trip from NYC would not be excessive. These are your glasses that you wear every day and they say more about you than your clothes, your bag, or your car.
