Vintage Garden (formerly Oriental Gourmet) in the Scarborough district of the Greater Toronto Area was the location of our dinner with some longtime family friends. It's a restaurant on the ground level of an assisted living facility for seniors. The building was recessed far back from the entry on McNicoll Ave. The roadside signage was tiny and easy to miss when driving past the address which was what happened to us. Parking was plentiful in the lot that was shared with a neighboring church. The dining area was divided into two different rooms with seating for about 150 customers. Our friends selected a preset banquet-style menu that needed to be ordered at least one day in advance. It featured Chaozhou cuisine which is in the eastern Guangdong province of China. These were the ten courses in the following sequence... * Whole Pork Belly Stewed in Chicken Soup * Golden Fried Cuttlefish Rolls * Special Double Combination Platter (Sweet & Sour Pork with Shredded Chicken) * Signature Chaozhou Sugarcane Scented Duck * Chaozhou-Style Half-Fried Fish * Braised Assorted Mushrooms and Fermented Vegetables * Beef Tenderloin Filet with Cashew Nut Sauce * Maggi Double Lobster * Chestnut Claypot Rice * Red Bean Dessert Soup Compared to a typical Cantonese style banquet, there were some unique offerings. The first was the soup in which a pig stomach was stuffed with chicken and white peppercorns. The broth was light and clean. The braised duck was smoked with cane sugar that imparted a dark color and emitted a sweet aroma. The fish was an interesting combination of being deep fried but served in a gravy with cubes of taro. The liquid reduced the crispiness so I wonder if simply steaming the fish would have been better. Chestnut pieces were scattered in the rice pot versus a more traditional yang chow version. Chaozhou cuisine tasted like a fusion of twists to traditional Cantonese dishes. The portion sizes were quite generous, and we ended up with plenty of leftovers. The price was a bargain at 388 Canadian dollars and was inclusive of the 13% harmonized sales tax in Ontario and gratuity. With the current exchange rate, that meant the cost was less than $300 for the feast which is unheard of nowadays in the States. The business accepted cash only so be wary of that policy.

Excited to return to this restaurant after their previous location closed and they moved here a few years ago. This is a similar menu as its predecessor, a restaurant called Oriental Gourmet (潮陽食軒) at McCowan and highway 7, and previously at Kennedy and Steeles. As other reviews already mentioned, this is now a dining room at the ground floor of a senior building. If you are looking for authentic Chiu chow style dishes, this place is quite tasty, with generous portions and good value. The old lunch menu is no longer available.

Solid Chiu Chow style food with lots of variety and packed with flavour. Only downside is it's quite small so you have to call to reserve, especially for the weekends as it's often booked up. Service is what you expect at a Chinese restaurant but this hidden gem is serving up some delicious food. We had the smoked duck, pig tripe ginger pepper soup (has a kick!), omelette with oysters, a platter, fish ball soup, clams and dessert. Definitely worth a visit if you're looking for Chiu chow food as there aren't many in the city.

Food is yummy. There are that many good chow chiu place in York Region anymore. Service is average. Similar to other Asian restaurants. Ambiance is ok. Nothing special. I go there for their food. Don't expect too much for service and ambiance. They only accept cash as a payment.

Restaurants that serves Chiu chow style food. The food was good and some dishes were unique. Service was also good as staff was friendly and nice. Highly recommended making a reservation as they get busy and possibly preordering certain dishes as well.

As many others have pointed out already, the resto is on the ground floor of a senior home (the entrance is actually a side door to the building). The resto itself is moderately sized and focuses on "chiu chow" style cuisine. My family was recommended this resto by one of my brother's friends as having great value food so we decided to check it out. Chiu chow style oyster & minced pork with rice in soup: Tasted pretty standard for chiu chow cuisine but honestly, if we had known how big some of the dishes were gonna be we prolly wouldn't have ordered this. Deep fried xenentodon: Crispy exterior, moist flesh and not too oily. Parents thought it was pretty good. Portion size was great. Home style fried oysters omelet: Really nice plating. Not too oily. Lots of oyster in every bite. Satay beef w/ gai lan: The beef was SO soft and melt in your mouth tender. They could've used smaller stalks of gai lan (these were HUGE lol) for easier chewing. Szechuan pepper chicken w/ dark vegetable: The chicken was moist and the pepper shoots were fried nice and crispy. Again, it was not too oily which was great. Stir fried green beans w/ minced pork & preserved olive: Prolly the best perserved olive, pork green beans I've had at a resto. This dish can tend to get really oily and AGAIN, it wasn't too oily at all. Not a single undercooked bean as well. Chiu yeung style smoked duck on sugar cane: My fave dish of the meal. The duck's flavour reminded me of Magic Wok's grandfather smoked chicken (IYKYK folks) and the sauce wasn't salty but rather slightly sweet from the sugar cane. The meat was also nice and soft. Chiu chow style assorted platter (shrimp balls, cuttlefish rolls, hand shredded chicken w/ jellyfish, scallops): This was my second fave dish of the meal. My whole fam didn't think it would be this big. It came with a ton of food making the $53 price tag worth it imo. If we had known this platter would be this big we would've skipped on the oyster & pork rice soup. Sweet potato and taro mash: This was dessert. I actually really liked this dessert! It was a variation of cantonese "sai mai lo" but with added sweet potato instead of just taro. My parents thought it was too sweet but I found it just right. Overall, a very very decent dinner and the value was ON POINT just like my bro's friend claimed. The full dinner cost was surprising to us (a lot of their dishes are under $20 which is quite unheard of in this inflationary economy right now). We thought our bill (for 5 ppl) would fall in the $300s but it actual fell in the $200s so bang-for-your-buck APPROVED. The added cherry on top was the food was not too oily at all. Barring its slightly odd location, this resto is solid and I would definitely be open to returning.

Love the dinner I recently order especially the sweet and sour pork. It is not too much batter and balance the pork. The fresh pineapple has make this dish very outstanding. The smoke duck is seldom found in other chinese restaurant and well done with good smoke taste. Those 3 dishes is must order The server is very helpful to provide dessert in takeout as we are too full to take it in the restaurant. Ambience is casual and is best to have family and friends for dinner. The senior live above have discount too.

I had a solid Chiu Chow dinner last month with family. I thought the food was really good. My aunt had arranged the menu and the different courses, but everything was great. The staff was friendly and food came out quickly. The location of the restaurant can be confusion. I definitely walked into the wrong building (a retirement home) before finding the right location.

Oyster pancakes, sweet and sour pork, fungis with vegetable(not sure what) and fried fish

The food features a variety of authentic Chaoyang food and was amazing. The service was overall great, and the thing is that they don't really push you to order more which I find pretty comforting. In summary, a good choice for reunions or for senior citizens.

Came here early for dinner as the reviews say it gets busy and it did. Place is average size and felt a little understaffed. Food overall was good and the crap we got was pretty fatty. Best dish though that we ordered was the sweet and sour pork. Would come back again to try other things.

We were feeling like some Chinese food for takeout and vintage garden came to mind. Tip: 10% off if you pay cash! We got 3 dishes for 3 people. Satay rice noodles with beef and Chinese broccoli. There were 3 large pieces of Chinese broccoli and tons of noodles and beef. The flavor is a mix of peanut satay and Chinese bbq sauce (sa cha sauce). Saucy and delicious. We got a broiled egg noodle dish that came with sparse pork, shrimp, bean sprouts and green onions. This is a very delicate dish, very light on seasoning which actually works perfectly! Definitely eat this dish before other saucier dishes, it's very well done and simple! Deep fried octopus cake - comes with slices of pineapples. I don't know why but this is awesome, maybe it's the octopus cake, maybe it's the deep fried wonton around the cake, maybe it's the sweet and tangy sauce that you dip it in. It's probably everything with the pineapple chaser. Price: 12.5$ ish per dish. Given that 3 of us ate and there was over a half a box each of each noodle dish - there is so much packed into each box! Totally worth it! Summary: I can not praise this place enough for the flavors and the quantity of food. So good!

Finally, a decent Chiu Chow style restaurant in Toronto. This is a great place for Chiu Chow Food. It's my first time having dinner and all the dishes were amazing. Just the size of the cold crab seems a bit small, but this is a seasonal item, so can't be picky. You will definitely need to make a reservation before visit.

Not a lot of Chiu chow style food these days been here lunch and dinner. They have more set combos for lunch including one with the peppery pig stomach soup. But I went there for dinner this time and on a Sunday night they were busy we got 3 dishes and a dessert

The posters outside caught my eye, and I decided to come back with a group of three friends to try it out. We came a bit late around 8 PM, and most of the fish were already sold out except the original. We ended up ordering the Signature Spicy Grilled BBQ Fish ($40), a whole fish served bubbling hot with three toppings (potatoes, spam, and lotus root). You can choose between catfish and turbot, we chose the turbot fish. It looked extremely spicy, but the spice level was actually perfect. It was a bit on the oily side, but pairing it with rice balanced it out nicely. The fish was very tender and buttery, everything tasted amazing! We also ordered the Stir-Fried Egg with Tomato. The eggs were soft, the tomato sauce was rich. Not to mention the portion size was huge, we even had leftovers after eating until we were full. The restaurant itself was spacious, clean, and had plenty of seating. I think they were doing some sort of promotion so they gave us a $25 off coupon, though it expired pretty quickly so we didn't get to use it. I'd definitely come back for that grilled fish.

A few of their dishes come out on a sizzling plate with flames underneath. They are still in soft-opening mode with several specials. You can see the menus via a QR code. The Hunan cuisine is listed as "Hunan Noodles" and the Szechuan cuisine is listed as "Chopfire Menu". The Szechuan dishes are listed with 1 to 3 chilies representing the spiciness. If you can't handle spicy, then avoid eating the chili pieces and you might "survive". The restaurant decided to minimize their food offerings so that they can focus on refining their dishes in terms of quality and taste, including from customer feedback. We ordered the following: 1. Signature Spicy Grilled BBQ Fish ($39.95). 2. Home Stir Fried Beef ($21.95). 3. Bullfrog with Baby Ginger ($19.95). 4. Stir-Fried Cauliflower with Preserved Pork ($15.95). 5. Drunk Oolong (charcoal roasted oolong tea base) x 2 ($5.95 x 2). 6. Lemon Taro Balls ($7.95). We also saw the following: 7. Stir-Fried Sliced Pork with Green Pepper Noodle Soup ($9.99). First 10 customers each day, only pays $1.00. 8. Ink Painting Cocktail ($5.95). The Signature Spicy Grilled BBQ Fish came out on a huge sizzling platter. The BBQ Fish, a Turbot Fish, was very fresh and flaky, easily coming off the bone. There is no head attached like at typical Chinese restaurants but it would not have fit in the platter. The platter had a delicious sauce (soupy consistency and not sweet), luncheon meat slices, lotus root slices, and two other vegetables, along with chili pieces. The entire dish tasted great together with the various flavours. The menu listed it as 2-chili spicy but I could handle it by avoiding the chili pieces. The Home Stir Fried Beef is tender. It is listed as 3-chili but I could handle it by avoiding the chili pieces. The Bullfrog with Baby Ginger has the bullfrog cut up in little pieces; no you don't see a whole frog! The meat was actually good but most pieces have bones in it, so it takes time to eat it carefully. There was ginger slices in it but it, but we thought the slices were quite large! The Stir-Fried Cauliflower with Preserved Pork was very delicious! It came in a sizzling plate. The Cauliflower was flavourful and was not crunchy and not too soft. I've never had preserved pork slices before; it was quite good, not as salty as Chinese preserved vegetables. The Drunk Oolong has comes in a small bowl a with gin and ice. On the side, they include pieces of the charcoal roasted oolong tea leaves so you can smell it; quite a good smell indeed. You can also order it without the gin, which is what I ordered for mine (since I don't drink alcohol). It was such a nice drink! The Lemon Taro Balls dessert was pretty. In the centre was a slice of lemon. The customer service was good. There is plenty of indoor table and counter seating, including a small private room at the back. There is also an outdoor patio during warmer weather. There is pop music playing in the background. There is no free WiFi. The restaurant is wheelchair accessible, but there is no door-open button. There are two gender-neutral washrooms downstairs, so they are not wheelchair accessible. There is paid neighbourhood street parking. Review 2025-026
