This was our first time going here and will definitely be going back. The place had a great vibe and the selection of beer was great! We didn't try any of the food, since we were there for drinks. However after talking to some of the folks and looking at the menu, we will be trying the food next time! We also want to come back and listen to some bands that play at the location. How can you not love 4th Street Vine?!?!?! If you raised your hand, well it looks like we're just not gonna be friends. I've had some of the best Long Beach nights here, getting down with the funky fresh DJs on Friday nights to rockin out when the Porch Party folks are mobbin deep! Let's start the review this way: I really don't know shit about wine. I know it comes from grapes, but I'm not one of those "let it breathe" types, nor want to pretend to be. I can tell the difference between red and white, but usually, when I go down to Utopia (another fine Long Beach establishment), I tell them what I want, and they recommend. Most importantly, they don't feel like I'm a stupid idiot, and I give them a big tip. That's how it works. The same deal here. I tell them what I want, they recommend. That's a great deal, considering they remembered who I was (last time in, I purchased Queen of Hearts, which is a Pinot Noir that was wonderful and another chardonnay, which was also good). Last time in, I picked up another red and white, and they recommended some good choices. This store is about my speed: a good wine selection where most of them are in the $10 - $25 range so I don't feel like one of those sheep at Trader Joe's. And I get to support a wonderful Long Beach business in the process. I just wish it was closer to the Noodles and Beer place, so it could take more of the hipsters' money. read more

I was expecting something totally different based on the reviews and the name of this place. I guess I was expecting a wine bar in the traditional sense, and that is not what this place is. Walking in I was surprised at all the open floor space and the lack of seating given the space they had. I was also surprised that they had very little wine on display, just a small set of shelves near the rear of the bar. the furniture/seating in this place seemed like an afterthought... Like someone said hey our patrons might want to sit down while they have a drink. The two large beverage coolers behind the bar looked out of place. I asked about flights and I was told there were two flights, one featured wines from Preston, a California winery and the other flight was an assortment of wines from around the world. The wines of the world was the better of the two flights. The first Preston wine had a bit of an odd nose (odor), at first I thought maybe the glass wasn't clean, but I discovered that this was a characteristic of all the Preston wines. The service here was actually pretty good, no complaints. I just can't get over the fact that I felt like this was more of a place to come have a beer than a glass of wine. I can see how this place would appeal to some, just not me. read more

What a great place! And I am so fortunate to have it in my 'hood. I've come here for different events throughout the past year and I have really enjoyed myself everytime. Its a chill vibe and there is really good affordable wine/beer. My friend's art was displayed here, they have had events in the back parking lot area which they close off or even for a gathering of my friends to celebrate the new year. Awesome. Great job on such a local place! I'd have to agree with Christopher B about the starkness of the place. Its a place I recommend for a group or a friend that you want to catch up with. The coolest underrated hangout on 4th street. Eat before coming here and just enjoy Free entertainment (call ahead) and get your drink on. Definitely a must if you love drink deals. What really got me interested in this new wine bar is that you can get a tasting of four wines for only $10! For the "super tasting," which is $2 more, you can get a tasting of a dessert wine. Awesome deal. We went on a Saturday night and sure enough all the seats in the small seating area were taken. Boo. Even though this was a tasting I still like to enjoy my vino whilst seated. Beer, I'll stand up for but cocktails and wine are best enjoyed sitting down since you've got to savor them. Fortunately, the man behind the bar, Evan, was sooo nice and accommodating and brought out a couple of leather arm chairs from the back room, which I think is a storage room as it wasn't prettied up. The wine bar also has a patio in the back and a bar area that has room for some bar stools but apparently the city won't allow that. Something to do with there being a school across the street. Yeah, I dunno what that has to do with anything. Mean, ol' city. You also can't take your wine glasses into the wine store area in the front of the space and you have to carry your wine bottle purchases out of the store in shopping bags. So many rules! But the wine bar deals with them the best they can and still manages to make it a great place to enjoy some vino on the cheap in a relaxed, low-key setting. Because of the close quarters it was easy to strike up a conversation with other patrons. This night we chatted with a couple who had just happened by the wine bar on their day of wandering around Long Beach and stayed for the tasting. Anyhoo, the owners of 4th Street Vine are a husband and wife team -- Jim and Sophia. He admittedly doesn't know much about wine but he does know Belgian beer, thus the impressive beer selection here. Mmm, Grand Cru! She is the wine expert, thus the delicious and affordable (cheaper than BevMo!) wine. The tasting itself was awesome in that the pours were considerably generous and I managed to get quite buzzed at the end of it. Good thing bf's place is within stumbling distance of here. The wines we tried: * Stone Paddock Sauvignon Blanc: My least favorite of the bunch. Kinda bitter. * Mont Albano Merlot Refosco: I LOVED this one. A very smooth finish, very light. * Entrecepas Riserva Rioja: This was so buttery. It actually smelled like a buttered popcorn Jelly Belly but fortunately didn't taste like one. Very smooth but almost watery. * Stama Zany Zin: I love Zinfandels in general so appreciated the full body of this wine. I was going to buy the Zany Zin ($17) but ended up with a bottle of Matanzas Creek Pinot Noir ($20) since that's a wine I've been on the lookout for at my favorite wine shops and haven't been able to find anywhere! And online I've seen it priced for $26-$35. "Come back and let us know what you think of it," Evan said. They only had two bottles of it and I guess haven't tasted it yet. I also purchased a bottle of Buffalo Belgian Stout because it just sounded so yummy considering I loves me some stout. If you're hoping for a bit of nosh with your wine you're welcome to help yourself to the small plate of cheeses at the bar. read more

I am very sorry, but I don't understand what all the five star reviews are about. I've been here on Thursday nights a couple times, and the $3 wines aren't anything to write home about. On top of that, the $6 & $7 pours aren't great, either! There is a desperate plea for more seating. How else are you going to keep people inside? Wandering around that tiny space, or standing by the mini bar is kiiiind of boring. Trying to help out the local shops lately...believe me, it was tough to skip the Trader Joe's cheap-ass-wine-as-gifts aisle. Economy sucks for all (I think? Except maybe for PDiddy? and GWBush? vomit.) and I want this place to stay around, so this shop got my dollars for wine shopping 2008. Not really a wine drinker...but I picked up some great bottles for my friends at this lovely little shop. Since I know nothing about wine, the owner graciously helped me. Poor thing...my lame attempt to help her: "Oh I think I need to get a fruity bottle and a not-so-fruity bottle?" Yeah, lame...I am totally aware of that. Still got my list checked off and was happy to support this shop. Probably a great place to stop at when 4th Street does their monthly street celebration...shops stay open late...music...BOOZE...you know, just good ol neighborhood fun. My boyfriend and I came in and ordered the European Wine Tasting. We we're served immediately but then the bartender left to go fix the beer tap system and disappeared for 10 minutes. We sat...and sat...and JUST as we were about to leave, he came back and continued to serve us. Fourth & Vine get three stars for reasonable pricing and they sell Cascade Brewing bottles. read more

The first time I came here, it was maybe 9 months ago after they opened; there was absolutely nothing going on and I wasn't in love with the music. Last night a friend and I were heading to Lola's for dinner and passed this place, noting that there was a pretty awesome three-piece band playing inside. On our way back, we stopped in for a few and checked it out. The place was PACKED. In fact, being that I live in the area and pass by frequently, I can say this is the busiest that I have ever seen 4th Street Vine. I did note that the wine cost had significantly increased, as mentioned in another post. However, the selection seemed a bit better than most wine bars. They also might need charge a bit more so that they can keep beer on tap (yes, you read that right- this wine bar is offering something for non-wine drinkers and it isn't in a bottle!) and have live bands, which most other wine bars do not offer. As for snacks, they sell potato chips. That was pretty much all that was there. I know there are many laws involved with serving food; it isn't as if they can just open a kitchen and go! However, if I want to go somewhere with yummy snacks (in this case I didn't because we had JUST eaten), I'd head to Wine District. But, if I'm ever coming back from dinner locally and they happen to have a band, I would certain drop in again. read more

Go here if you like GOOD QUALITY beer and wine. You will love this place after your first drink. There really aren't any negative about this place. The beer is yummy, some of it rare and har-to-find, and all of them are strong and will do the job of getting you buzzed while tasting great. Same goes fro the wine. I should have reviewed this place sooner as the hubby and I have been coming here the entire time they have been open (about 3 years now) and, yes, the fine wine that they sell, this place just gets better and better. They have expanded the patio in the back which is really cool. The owners are great and they are more than happy to accomodate you with whatever drink you may want. They know their shit- which I love. I hate it when a bartender/waiter/ whoever- works- there doesn't really know about the product. Trust. They do!!! Service is friendly and prices are right ($3/glass on Thursdays and $8 bottomless mimosas on Sundays!). Ive dropped a lot of people off here (Lyft driver) and have been curious to see it for myself. A couple of bands were playing and pretty much all the seats were taken which is a good sign. The drink menu was on the back wall which makes is sorta awkward to try to read and not make it look like I'm staring someone down. I've been here several times and each time was a completely different experience...different nights have different offerings: sometimes acoustic/live performances, sometimes (cd's?), and the last time was a DJ'd pretty chill shindig. The owners (married couple, I believe) are very hospitable, and knowledgeable. This spot is in my hood (street parking but never been a prob). I like that I can get out without really needing to "go out", can roll solo here if I so desire, and not feel like my business is insignificant compared to a larger party. Ambience=chill, somewhat intimate, nice artwork, good mix of good music Selection=Great. I like their theme nights. Keep up the great service, Bean and Rice! So many things to love about this place: - great beer! - cheap wine night on thursdays - patio!! Things to not love about this place: - on busy nights it is almost impossible to find seating - such a random thing to complain about, but when you are on the back patio the light from the rest room flashing on and off as people use it is super distracting. Maybe they could forcefully leave it on? But clearly you can see the good outweighs the bad. I have never been on a night with live music, just because that isn't my thing. But I really do enjoy this place and it has a much higher capacity than the lovely Art Du Vin half a block down on 4th. So I for sure come here when I'm with a larger group. Dear 4th Street Vine, I had a fantastic time drinking 2 pours of yummy Lambrusco in a perfectly chilled glass whilst relaxing on your couch with my man and some friends. It was a great time despite the awful racket the live entertainment was creating that evening. I also appreciate that you have quite a few beers available for those who are not wine enthusiasts. Sorry that my boyfriend spilled a bit of my wine on your floor. You carry Brachetto d'Acqui, which is my absolute favorite vino in the entire world and I can guarantee I will be back soon to scoop up a bottle. My only complaint? I'm writing this with feelings of major guilt. Was I whining too much about how much I wanted to taste Shady Grove's great green salsa again? It's been over a year that they participated in an event where they knocked my socks off. So between two day playoff games, having suffered two rooted-for team defeats, my guy kindly agrees to take a sports break. We went to try the much anticipated (by me) Shady Grove Foods which was making an appearance for brunch at 4th Street Vine. Don't get me wrong, there are at least four restaurants on 4th Street which I think are grand such as The Pike and Lola's. But then also there are the hipster spots that I find intolerable. This, unfortunately, is one of them. I've been in the front of the establishment and had no qualms but today there was a high decibel DJ and no space. So to the patio we went. Unseasonably warm, and with no adequate shade I felt broiled in the January sun. The tables are cutesy weird uneven slabs of stone. We sat where smoking was permitted which appealed to the guy. One doesn't get drink service on the patio.That wasn't a problem, but a group of whiskey-husky voiced hipsters were trying to outdo one another with loud gross stories. They had the sweetest well behaved doggies with them, so again, no problem. We'd be getting delicious food soon. But no, nothing was delicious, the stony short rib barbacoa sopes had barely any filling other than an egg. The chorizo tamale was quite empty. The self-served michelada tasted watered down. Well, at least we quickly got back to the third game, but my guy was rooting for the team that lost. So I guess sometimes things grow better with memory and I don't have to search for the disappointing Shady Grove any longer. One of the stars was for allowing the beautiful doggies, another star for providing a smoking area (as a nonsmoker, I think bars are one place that's senseless to bar smoking) but this was a one star eating experience. read more

I love this little wine/beer bar and really like their patio space in the back as well. One star is lost for an annoying situation the other night. I was outside enjoying a drink with a friend and a super drunk guy stumbled out of the bar and splattered wine (THANK GOD IT WAS WHITE WINE) literally all over me. On my face, top, jeans and IN MY SHOE. He was slurring his words super hard and my friend and I had to escape to an inside table to avoid further conversation/the splash zone. Saw him around the bar the whole time and am pretty sure he was served alcohol again. If someone is that messed up, please ask them to leave and please do not continue to serve him/her. I remember my first time coming here. I enjoyed this place a lot. The lady that was running this store was actually really tired the night she served me, giving me a mix of wines before realizing what she had done. However, upon realizing it, she quickly offered to give me what I origionally ordered at no extra cost. I was a little bummed that there was no appetizers, besides pretzels to munch on. I thought the cheese plate offered was a tad expensive for my budget; but overall, the ambiance was sweet and mellow. Went here last night with a date to see her brother perform.....Nice place. Small and cozy. The ownerJim was super nice and we hooked up with another couple (Hi Jason and Christina!) if just for a moment and had a drunken blast with them. Had the $13 sample plate...meats, bread and cheeses...seriously yummy. Jim recommended a Chianti for me that was terrific! I shoulda wrote it down! And the price was right at $7. Good stuff! I "could" feel the LA vibe thing going on pretty strong...lots of hipsters and creative types...but it didn't taint the experience. Looking for a place to meet up with friends, have a glass or two, a snack and some conversation? This is the place. I have walked by 4th Street Vine more than a few times over the past year and finally had a chance to go in an enjoy the experience last night. It was an overdue visit, and a place that I will return to, for sure. Plenty of seating, great lighting, relaxed atmosphere, and open-beamed ceilings add to the ambience of this great little wine bar in Long Beach's Retro Row. Not to mention the warm greeting and smile of Vine's owner, Jim, who is eager to offer suggestions or information about the wine and beer selections. Yes, beer selections on tap as well, something for everyone! I met up with some girlfriends for an after-work drink. We took a few minutes to look over the options and make our comments. A glass or a bottle, cheese plate or meat plate? Although the wine selections may seem slightly limited, they were certainly good quality. We decided on a bottle of Malbec, the cheese plate and the meat plate. All were delicious and complimented our chat-time very nicely. A glass ranges in price from about $7-10, while the bottles can go for up to $35 or so. There was also a flight offered of four pours for $12, which seems like a good price for the quality of wine. Looking forward to coming back for some live music and a chance to experience the outside patio that I have heard about. read more

Just moved to LBC and decided to check this out on my first real evening in the city. Was pleasantly surprised to find that it was slow (9PM maybe, on a Sunday night) and had a great experience with the Worldwide Wine Tour ($10) which came with 4 tastings. The tastings, as the menu stated, are typically one white and three reds and I really enjoyed all 4 of them. Whether you are a local or not, this place has a nice, relaxed feel and offers an excellent place to chill and have something to drink. Will definitely be coming back - probably as a regular. When I think of a wine bar, I think of a place where you can taste some great wines that you aren't familiar with and where you can SIT DOWN. I have been to 4th Street Vine on various occasions - for wine tasting or art shows and each time I am there I really just want to leave. Standing in this small space with a standing bar where maybe four people can stand is not my idea of a good wine bar. Last night, my girl and I decided to finally check this place out. We walked straight to the menu chalk board. Decided to each get the "$10 Spanish wine flight" (which was great). Placed our order with the som/owner and did our rounds. The toughest decision for us was picking a spot to sit. I highly recommend the bar, but there are several seating areas that seem pretty awesome all around the bar. Owner seems down to earth and we will defiantly go back. This is by far my favorite wine bar. I used to wonder if I was just a little biased, as I met my significant other here. But no, I've taken time to think about it as objectively as possible. First, Jim and Sophia, the owners, are rad and I feel like family every time I walk in. Second they are very knowledgeable about wine and beer, and when I'm indecisive, I let Jim pick my beer. I'll just say something like, "I'm feeling like something crisp and Summery," and I'm never disappointed. The rotating art shows are great- really keeps the environment fresh and exciting. Also, for anyone who attended the LA Records event, you know how insane that event was. I don't know how they pulled it off with such a huge patron to bartender ratio, but everyone I know there (and really, pretty much everyone you've ever met in Long Beach was there) had a fabulous time. I was really impressed! Amazing job. Tip for patrons wanting a mellow wine bar to relax at and catch up with friends, I highly recommend checking the website and going on a night when there isn't a live band. (I understand, some nights, I'm not feeling live music, I just want to talk). Sometimes I love going on a busy night to see a show here, and equally love going on an occasional Monday to relax with a beer after work. I really like this place. Mostly because it's quality without superiority - ie: no egos, no pretenses - just niceness and chillness all the way around! I have only been on $3 Thursdays and on this night it can get crowded, loud and quite busy but after a little wine - who notices??? I always meet interesting people and have some good convos and I like that we can walk to & fro too! That's a huge plus! Wine - great selection. Layout - Wines are displayed throughout for the most part and they are easy to access and view There is a good amount of space all together for a large crowd to peruse, drink, chat and stand and that's a very good thing! Seating is limited. So be prepared to get there early to grab some of the 8 or so spots available. Staff - Great barservice, Evan and front counter young lady are always friendly, approachable and helpful. Crowd - diverse ages, some ethnic diversity here & there and for those women who like women there seems to be alot of that jumpin off as of late. (Hey, just keepin it real) My bf and I go here often and we always enjoy this spot - it makes for a really pleasurable almost Friday night and I would recommend it for almost anyone to get to at least once. read more

4TH Street Vine is more than simply my go to wine/ beer bar in Long Beach. Not only does their atmosphere have the feel of a local lounge but their beer selection is pretty great. The space itself has beautifully exposed brick walls and high beam ceilings. They often have live music and events which helps cultivate a sense of community. They showcase local music and visual artists and the exhibits are often changing so you're always exposed to new work. I love coming for Thirsty Thursdays where I can try new beer and wine selections for ONLY $3 a glass!!!
