Was in Long Beach and came across this place, sounded fun so we decided to go check it out. First, walking into the venue, a lot of fun, thunder and lightening, tiki items, feeling like you're going through some old jungle, just fun. Inside is more of that same tiki vibe for about half the venue, the other half is set up with a large TV to watch games as well as an area for karaoke. Now, to what matters, the drinks. Drinks were delicious. Even the Zombie, which typically has around four different rums in it, with one being over proof rum, was flavorful. And the Lapu Lapu bowl hit, and stayed flavorful despite ice melting. Never felt watered down at any point. The food was fairly straightforward. We tried a few items with the sliders, fries and coconut shrimp. The shirt best was decent while in a Hawaiian room, the shrimp was also decent, very fried and crispy, while the fries had a different cut to them and came with ketchup and ranch. For really wasn't memorable but the drinks were great. Definitely a good find in Long Beach if you're looking for a time bar with a nice vibe and tasty cocktails.

I love a tiki bar, and this little Long Beach hidden spot is a good one. There are no signs for this place, you just have to know it's under Shannon's on Pine. We went at 8:30 on a Sunday night, so it was pretty quiet, although parties were coming and going. They've done a great job with the theming--it looks very Polynesian. There's is a fun lava throne, Lord of bamboo, and lots of tiki totums. It was decorated up for Halloween, but the look was still definitely tiki. And when the thunderstorm hits and the lights flash, notice the lava lines on the floor! You go up and other and pay at the bar, then someone will bring your drinks and food. We ordered: *Zombie (cocktail) *Drunken Monkey (cocktail) *Floor is Lava (cocktail) *Loco Moco x2 *Kalua BBQ pulled pork sliders We all really liked our drinks--the Floor Is Lava was delish!!! We enjoyed our food, too, especially the sliders. We have been here before and will come back again. It's a fun time!

Went here last minute and we got in right away! We ordered 3 drinks, I think we ordered the Drunken Money, Pineapple Express (?), and Hibiskiss! It was so fun here and very loud and bright. There was a live band playing Christmas music which was so cool. I don't think this is a place where you can really talk, more like chill and drink with your friends because it's so loud. It can also be overwhelming for people who are sensitive. We also got 2 pulled pork buns and fries. They were good for a party of 3. Overall, fun place and vibes. *On the bottom floor of Shannon's!*

Fun tiki bar in the basement of a bar on Pine in downtown Long Beach. We came around the holidays and they had a fun band playing. The drinks are great too

Arguably the very best tiki bar in Southern CA. Look for a stairway going downstairs in front of Shannon's in downtown Long Beach. You'll find the entry door next to a cool waterfall surrounded by lush tropical greenery as thunder booms and lightning flashes. Once through the door you'll find a large bar and many tables surrounded by decor that provide the tiki atmosphere you hope for. It's dark but not overly so. I was there on a weekday shortly after opening so it was happy hour and on the quiet side. Well, not exactly quiet as the sound system was blasting both punk and classic rock. On weekends they have live music and a lively crowd. The bartenders were friendly and spoke to me about the upcoming entertainment for the month as well as past events. I ordered a house cocktail - Ron's Rum Runner. Banana, cherry, coconut, raspberry, and lime along with plenty of rum made this a spectacularly wonderful tiki drink. This place knows how to make a cocktail that'll make your eyes light up. I also ordered pork sliders from the happy hour food menu. These 3 sliders were simple but tasty with delicious pulled pork and slaw between Hawaiian rolls. If you like tiki bars or just need something fun and different, this is it. I absolutely love this place and will definitely be back.

Rockabilly and tiki - the collab that everyone needs. Much like the pulled pork sliders and fries which were absolutely delicious. Place is located below Shannon's, with meter parking throughout their downtown area. As you go downstairs, their oasis set up just before the entrance is cool with lightening and thunder, making for a cool entrance. We sat towards the front of the bar to get a view of the band but not too close to their speakers. Ive been to a few tiki bars and this one was far better than the others. It was also perfectly dim/lit. Sometimes i felt like others were too dark. Def a must place to check out if you are even in long beach.

I absolutely loved this bar! I loved the tiki theme and all the decor they had. The guy bartenders were very good while the lady bartender acted like the didn't want to be bothered . I love they had a live band for music and a small space for people to dance. We did not order any food this time just came for drinks. Prices were reasonable and drinks were very yummy. Will be coming back here for more .

This place showed up on TIK TOK so of course I had to give it a try. It is also considered a "speak easy" but honestly it didn't really give us that speak easy vibes. It is located downstairs of another restaurant area. The vibes amazing here. Everyone is having a great time. There's a variety of drinks on the menu! I did do a reservation for seating however when we came, it was self serve. We opted for the fish bowl which was good! People were dancing, dressed up in Christmas clothing since it was December, and they had live music as well.

My girlie showed me this little secret bar underground. It gave off evil island in the middle of the ocean. It even had a cool chair in the corner and I had to sit and pose. We all got a few drinks, I got the coconut shrimp. It was hella sweet, but the sauce saved it. The bartenders are nice , it was a vibe.

Typical tikibar which is fun filled, with cool music and exotic drinks. The ambience is glow lights and a volcano storm every so often. The walkway to get in leads you downstairs to a waterfall and tiki dudes...super cool. Drinks are priced typical for a tiki bar, which is about 18 bucks a pop. You have to be patient with the bartender cause these drinks are specialty made and take time. Overall this is a great spot to hang with friends before hoping to the other baes on long beach.

Eric and George are huge tiki fans, so they wanted to try this place. Great little secret tiki bar downstairs. Great happy hour all day on Sunday! We had lots of great drinks. I tried most of them and they were all amazing! We had coconut shrimp, fries, grilled chicken and moco loco burgers and sliders! All the food was tasty and good portions. Our server Brent was so nice and attentive. My only criticism is I really wanted the chocolate lava cake but were informed the kitchen had just closed 6 minutes ago. So just know the kitchen closes at 8:30 and I wish I knew and we would have ordered. To be fair it says it on the menu. Great decor makes it a really fun experience!!

We were in Long Beach for a visit to another bar and when we happened to walk by Secret Island we remembered it was on our Tiki Tour list so we decided we would swing by after our first spot. For off the ambiance is five stars. Perfect vibe for what you want in a tiki bar. Had a cool lava floor and you'd hear a storm once in a while... something to similar if you remember Rainforest Cafe. lol Our service was top notch, had a great server and he was friendly, attentive, and great with tips and recs. While we were there it was Happy Hour, and while we didn't get any drinks from Happy Hour we did order the food options. There were some pork sliders, fries, and coconut shrimp. All food was great bar food and we enjoyed it! Now the drinks... this is where I'm deducting a star. As a regular tiki bar goer all over the US, ambiance and drinks are always top of mind. We felt the drinks were just ok based on the standard recipes we are used to. Painkiller was good, Zombie didn't taste like a typical zombie to us, the Pele's Fire was a really nice take on a tiki drink. Honestly, the Sea Queen might have been my fave drink despite it not being your standard tiki style drink. Would definitely go again based on food and service and to try some other drinks!

I am a tiki enthusiast, and this Tiki "speakeasy" has been on my list for quite a while. Every time I pass by this tiki, there's always a long line outside so I'm always tempted to brace myself and look for the parking in Long Beach just to go down there, however after in driving circles looking for parking, I always end up not going. I finally showed Up on a week day and I was quite surprised to find how easy it was to find parking right in front. In fact, all of pine street was empty! Super weird. Anyway... made our way to secret Island and to my surprise there was absolutely no line. Went up to the podium got our IDs checked and made our way downstairs. The entrance is pretty cool. There's a themed tunnel that you walk through before entering the actual bar. When we entered the bar, I was surprised to see that it was completely empty. So empty that I thought the bar was actually closed. There was one female bartender there and we actually had to ask her if they were open which she replied yes. It was almost like we were happy that we were able to get in there and see the ambience of the place and experience it without being shoulder to shoulder with a bunch of strangers, but at the same time, it was weird being the only people in the bar. So we sat at the bar took In The vibes ordered some food, grabbed a drink and walked around took some photos and needless to say I don't think I need to go back. I am glad that we stopped by. I can check it off my list, but it is much too big for it to be a traditional tiki bar. And I think now I've come to realize that the really long line that I've always seen when driving by wasn't actually for secret island but more so for the bar that is upstairs. Regardless, while I was there, I needed to use the ladies room and found that I was not the only one in there. It was a bit of an awkward situation when I found myself cornered by a few cockroaches, and as I was leaving the restroom, there was one dead waving goodbye to me as I left. I guess the experience was just not happening that night and even though maybe it was just an off night it was enough for me to not need to go back. The drink was OK but nothing all write home about and the food just tasted like every day bar food. Now, if this place is on your tiki list, yeah sure come by check it off, but I don't think you'll need to have to come back again.

False Advertising and Total Failure of a "Speakeasy"…read more This place should not call itself a speakeasy. According to their website, they are strict about dress code, reservations, and no large parties. None of that was enforced. People arrived wearing sports clothes, tennis shoes, and flip-flops, and a group of more than 10 people was allowed in. That group was loud, drunk, and screaming, completely destroying any speakeasy ambiance. We had a reservation booked one week in advance for 2 tables of six, yet by 8:30 pm, we were told no food was available, despite the bar being almost empty. The water was already on the table when we arrived and tasted strongly of chlorine, with no ice. The waitress was clearly new, untrained, and unprepared. She did not know the menu, didn't know how to take an order properly, and provided no guidance whatsoever. There was one bartender Ricardo, who took over an hour to prepare cocktails and showed no sense of urgency or care. The dramatic cocktail descriptions sounded impressive, but the drinks did not match the descriptions at all. Because of the delays, we were never even able to properly toast or celebrate our friend. The charcuterie board took forever and arrived with an absurd amount of cheese and only six pieces of bread. To make things worse, part of the food we ordered never arrived at all. The live jazz band advertised and promised never showed up. When asked, the staff responded with: "I don't know, they were supposed to be here. I don't have their phone number." That level of disorganization is unacceptable. At the end of the night, we were shocked to receive a check close to $600 for two tables, despite each person only having one cocktail and shared food. The bartender, Ricardo, approached us and said: "Well, sorry, we really tried tonight! It wasn't the best, but we tried." Honestly, that comment made the experience even more frustrating. I can't imagine how bad it would have been if they hadn't "tried."That statement perfectly summarizes the problem -- trying is not enough when everything fails. I would not recommend this place for a speakeasy experience. This is not a speakeasy. It's a poorly run bar hiding behind a concept it does not deliver. Do not recommend.

The staff was inexperienced, dismissive, and unprofessional. Drinks were outrageously overpriced and took forever to arrive. The food was a joke, a $60 charcuterie board made up of cheap grocery store cheese, ham, and crackers that didn't come close to justifying the price. We were served warm water that tasted like chlorine, and the response from staff was literally "I don't know, I just work here." At one point both waitresses vanished, leaving the bartender overwhelmed and everything grinding to a halt. The live jazz band they advertise never showed up, and staff had no explanation or contact info. The so-called dress code was completely ignored, with groups in jeans and sneakers flooding in, turning the place loud, chaotic, and classless. This place delivers nothing it promises. Everyone wanted to utilize the rooftop patio as it was beautiful out. We were greeted by someone which mentioned to us that any bar seating was available. There was a section towards the back that was pretty lively. I think it was booked for a group. Instead of the bar area, we asked to sit along the rooftop counter that looks out to the street and building across the street. Way better view and perfect way to spend the afternoon hours. Staff were all pretty sweet and very friendly. Whatever we needed they were they to help. Both the regular menu and happy hour menu were quite impressive. As we just wanted HH, it was given. They had drink special for 10.00 and small bites for 10.00 as well. Didn't hesitate and started off with some drinks. The red sangria with mixed fruits was a nice clean and refreshing treat. Tasteful without that aftertaste. And the Le Pistolet Fumant, a delectable tasty drink with mezcal with a hint of pineapple. And other well drink that was perfect for a nice afternoon. HH drink special was quite tasty to start off. Food wise, started off with an order of the Caesar salad, simple but delicious. Fresh crisp Romaine lettuce and slices of Parmesan and crouton bits. Nice crunch with each bite. The dressing, wow pretty tasty. And an order of the Mac and Cheese . Most places it's either a hit or a miss and let me say it was a HIT. Quite cheesy and full of flavors that a second order was had. A dish I do recommend for HH. We also had an order of the Brussels sprouts which was excellent. A nice glaze and crunchy with chunks of house cured pancetta. Nice big chunks I must say. Lastly the beef sliders with Wagyu beef patties. Honestly, this was the least favorite of the dishes we got. You would think it sounded great but it was quite tasteless and nothing major to report on. Served with brioche bun and shredded lettuce and tomatoes and a lemon aioli. I had high hope for it when I saw the group next to us order it but it was a little disappointing. Overall, the Mac and cheese, Caesar salad and Brussels sprouts were all hits. The sliders, disappointing. Other items on HH didn't look too ingesting for us but it was for other people. The rooftop lounge and bar area was the place to be when we were there. It picked up real fast after we got seated. Picnic style tables being occupied by large groups before HH ended. Just the rooftop alone was great and beautiful. It a place that's good for a drink and meal with friends. Downstairs was beautiful but seemed more of an intimate experience. Overall, it was a great choice for a meal during HH.

When we…read moregot there it was a bit crowded but hey that is the nature of the game sometimes when going out to bars. So that didn't bother me too much. Me and my girls were able to get 3 seats at the bar. Like much of the other reviews. Service was slow and it took a long time to get a drink. However, as the night went on the crowd grew bigger and there were only 2 servers so I gave them the benefit of the doubt. That alone is not why I gave this place 1 star. I have came to this bar a few times in the past. It has been a couple of years since I have been back but my past experiences had been pleasant. At first everything was cool. Even with service being slow me and my girls were just talking and vibing with each other and those around us. We met some pretty cool people there. They have a small dance floor and we had a few drinks in us so went dancing. It was a great time. We ended up getting warm from the dancing and wanted to get a breather outside. We saw the door to the patio was open and people were outside. So we walked out and were just talking. One of my crew was smoking a cigarette. Then 2 of the staff members came out furious completely bypassing the other tables of people sitting outside and came directly to us. They started screaming and cussing at us saying we weren't supposed to be outside. One of them said "isn't it obvious can't you read?!" One of my friends said "no wasn't obvious" and my sister in law was telling them to calm down and that we would go inside. She told them that they were being incredibly rude because they were people outside and we thought it was open. As we went inside they still berated us. Two grown men yelling and cussing at us now from inside the bar. So we had hand enough and talked back because we were not going to be verbally attacked at a place that we spent money and our time at. We ended up deciding to leave and as we decided to leave, they followed us out and slammed the door on us and said that we weren't allowed in. Still yelling and cussing at us through the gated door. I started filming shortly around this time because I felt unsafe. Then they started mocking us saying "now look they are going to leave us a bad review." and I said yes we are because this experience was horrifying. I asked was because of our race? (because we were a diverse group of women). It went from two grown men yelling at us to silence. I want to make this clear. Though there were other people sitting outside that night. Lighter skinned people. We were the only ones targeted. No other individual outside was treated this way and no other staff intervened. If you are a woman. If you are of color, do not come here. We are not welcome.

1 Star - Worst Experience I've Ever Had at a Bar…read more I've been to The Blind Donkey in downtown Long Beach before but what happened last night deserves to be shared. I came here with a friend last night and ordered a blonde beer that tasted completely off -- it genuinely tasted like blue cheese. My friend encouraged me to ask for a replacement since something was clearly wrong with it. When she brought it to the bar, the bartender told her he'd replace it and that it was on the house, but then made her pay for the second drink anyway. If I had known she'd still be charged, I would've just not asked for another drink. When I came up to the bar to clarify why she paid for something he said was comped, the bartender backtracked and said he "didn't mean" that. I asked if they could void the second charge, since this was supposed to be a simple replacement. He kept explaining that he is charging us for this second one because it was not a blonde, it was a white ale. I told him that's fine, but why did he say it was "on the house" and now charging us anyway? He ended up bringing over the manager. The manager was a short, Latino man with a hat on. He was incredibly rude from the moment he arrived explaining the beer was a blonde- which I know what I ordered, but tasted whack. He didn't look at us, didn't listen to anything we were saying, and without asking a single question he grabbed both drinks we paid for and dumped them down the drain. We were stunned -- we paid for both of them and now had nothing. When he came back, I calmly told him we paid for both drinks he just threw out. His response? "Don't expect to come here and get free drinks." Which is wild considering we never asked for anything free -- we were just trying to get the mistaken charge fixed. When I told him he needed to void the drink he dumped, he called security on us. We weren't loud, drunk, or confrontational. Security refused to give us the manager's name, and only one finally whispered "Ken," though at that point it felt like they were just saying anything to get us out the door. I've worked in customer-facing roles before. I understand dive bars aren't known for luxury service, but this wasn't about service -- it was about basic respect, integrity, and not charging customers for drinks you throw away yourself. I'm leaving this review as a Long Beach local, it's saddening to see how a popular bar like The Blind Donkey treats their customers. This was the worst experience I've ever had.
