Had our second dining experience here the other night, and I have to say, it was FLAWLESS! I enjoyed la Tache -- I really did. I know things got bad there toward the end, but honestly, I didn't have a single bad experience when it "was French". So, I was nervous when I heard that it was changing its menu to -- OF ALL THINGS -- Dutch...? WTH? Who even knows what Dutch food is? Well, I can tell you now, that due to Vincent, I do...AND I LOVE IT.
The dining experience was wonderful. Our server (Vonnie) was off-the-charts awesome! Funny, attentive, great recommendations. Only downside is that I had to pay *extra* for my own silverware...JUST KIDDING (it's an inside joke between me and Vonnie). We loved her and hope to get her again when we go back!
The room was busy, but not packed. Very comfortable and the atmosphere lends itself to an intimate, personal experience. Yet (like most places up here in Andersonville) the room was filled with wonderful, friendly people so I didn't mind having people *around* us. On our first time here (right after the switch-over) we ate out on the patio...great location for it. We'll definitely miss it over the winter...but will look forward to it next year.
The table next to us got mussels...and I have to tell you, I was really torn. The specials sounded fantastic (and I figured the mussels will be there next time, right?) so I had a wild boar ragout special that was delicious. My partner had the trout, which was also very tasty. I'm anxious to go back and have the mussels, though. I'm a big fan of the ones they serve at Hopleaf, so the bar has been set high...hopefully Vincent won't disappoint.
We had frittes for an appetizer and they were excellent. Crispy on the outside and flaky on the inside with three different kinds of dipping sauce (I preferred the *fancy* one, although the other two were very good, too). Last time there, I had the cold mustard soup appetizer (with crab), which was very good indeed.
For dessert we had a dense chocolate cake with peanut butter mouse and thick fudge sauce. Totally decadent, totally delicious, totally fattening and totally worth it. I would recommend this to any chocolate lover. For what it's worth, I believe they have an in-house pastry chef that divines all their luscious confections. I can't say for certain if this is true. By the time we were talking about dessert I was 2 gin-and-tonic's, a half-bottle of wine and a Gran Marnier into the evening, so my memory may have faded a bit. Oh well, good for me I live within walking/stumbling distance because I WILL BE BACK and I WILL BE EATING THAT CAKE AGAIN.
I should mention that the wine list was a little *short*, but big deal. If I want a gazillion bottles of wine to choose from, I'll go somewhere snobby. If I want a great dining experience, though, I'll head back here (by the way, the bottle we had was great, anyway).
Thank you, Vincent! read more
