A speak easy in Boise! I was intrigued! The whole experience was so fun to share with a group of…read morefriends! We stood in the alley and knocked on the door. A small window in the door opened and we had to provide a password to gain entry. (Initially our large group had to reserve 3 time slots and we would be seated separately.) I was in the first group. We were let into a small area with floor to ceiling bookcases. Of course there was a book that once pulled, opened a secret door to the bar within. The ambiance was dim lighting and groups of comfortable seating areas. The waiter was very attentive and knowledgeable about the drinks on the menu. I started with a mocktail that could be made vegan by omitting the egg white. Beautifully presented with a flower design. It was sweet and it was tart. The second drink I got was a cocktail that was smooth with a perfect amount of sweet. My friends got cocktails in their unique glasses. When our next group came through, they were led into a room. After a while, one friend came out to say hello to us. The waiter noticed that we knew each other and told my group to follow him. The room was dimly lit and was furnished with comfortable armchairs and couches. Our third group was able to join us in the room and we were able to mingle seated or standing. The different drinks that were ordered were so cool. A smoky bubble was set on top of a cone shaped glass that resembled an ice cream cone. I had a couple of friends that ordered gin drinks and they were served in a bathtub complete with rubber ducky! This was such a fun and special way to celebrate a friend's birthday! The service was superb!

I've been to several speakeasies around the USA and Gatsby should be the standard of what a…read morespeakeasy should be. No really! Imagine yourself walking through the 8th St promenade in downtown Boise. It's hustling and bustling with people and restaurants that are packed. Then, out of the corner of your eye, you see an alley. It's kinda dark, maybe a little unsettling at first. You see a steel door with a small panel at the top of the door. No door handles but a green lit old stagecoach light, a small wooden sign hanging g just beyond the door with a key on it. Hmmm, strange. In faded sharpie letters it says Knock knock on the metal door, so you knock twice. The panel on the door slides open and they ask for the password. Whoa!!!! Luckily you called ahead to make reservations so they whispered it to you. You give the password and door opens to a tiny little library with a couple of shelves full of books. The hosts welcomes you and you stare at the bookshelf knowing it isn't just a bookshelf but a door. You try pulling on different books guessing which is the right one but after a minute the hostess shows you and you enter a beautiful brick walled 1920s decorated room with seats and dim lights and no windows whatsoever. The artwork is prohibition-era themed. Heck, there's even a stack of wooden barrels that supposedly hold spirits. That is exactly the speakeasy experience you are looking for. We were seated in the boiler room, a private area which had beautiful wooden lockers with glass doors all lit up and full of booze. Books line the wall and there is an old fireplace covered with candles that have melted wax all over the mantle. In the corner is a poker table. Really the perfect vibe for a speakeasy. Glance at the menu and notice their tang of cheaper to very rare and unique spirits, some costing hundreds of dollars for a shot. Whisky, vodka, rum, gin, scotch, bourbon, you name it. But also check out their cocktails. They can even make mocktails if you don't want alcohol. Not only are the drinks unique but so is their presentation. The glades used I've never seen. Some drinks have a printed pattern on them, others come with dry ice that quickly evaporates or a cool smoked filled bubble. The whole experience was just amazing. This is a do not miss opportunity if you like drinks and cool, unique experiences. They even have another room in the back called the Garrison Room which looks like a mineshaft. I just love the thought put into this place. And when you are done, you exit through a nondescript door and exits to a patio area of another restaurant and back out to the promenade. Just a wow experience! So glad I did it.

I will say the staff here are extremely nice and their drinks both alcoholic and non-alcoholic are great but food was a bit disappointing for me. I know I am going to sound like a complete weirdo listing what I ordered (which yeah, I am.. what can I say, I have unique taste buds) .. I ordered a lavender lemonade, a maple pecan cream soda and for food the "Peanut Butter Jelly Time" burger with a side of "VooDill" fries. The burger is like a smash burger topped with a blackberry jam and creamy peanut butter and the fries had dill seasoning. The fries were actually pretty good and worth the uncharged for the dill seasoning, the drinks I got were very tasty - if you like lavender like I do, definitely get their lavender lemonade! I like that it doesn't taste watered down or super perfume like, it was a perfect balance of lavender flavor!! The canned maple pecan cream soda was good as well, it reminds me of the Butter Beer you can get in Universal Studio's Harry Potter Wizarding World but it also tasted like it had such an insane amount of sugar that my heart might explode so probably better to just not get that. Now when it comes to the burger, I've had a few peanut butter burgers and while I know it's strange I typically enjoy them and this one could have been very good but it tasted like they put half a container of creamy peanut butter on a burger and gave me only the tiniest bit of blackberry jam. All I could really taste eating this was the peanut butter and I like peanut butter but it wasn't pleasant and definitely not worth $15. The little hint of blackberry jam was delicious but gone after the first bite.. they need to balance out the portions of the PB and Jam. If you're a fan of PB burgers, I recommend going to Sid's Garage at the Village in Meridian instead.. they have a PBJ burger that'll knock your socks off- and in theirs you can taste all the flavors, not just a pile of peanut butter!

Lots of taste in the food that I've ordered. Hearty eaters will finish their portion, but the rest of you will be asking for a box. The meh - Nothing to report It seems they've been short staffed a couple times when I visited. The bad - Nothing to report

Cozy, with cute antique furniture and friendly ownership and staff (hi Shelley!). I ended up having the same downtown the following day and came back. Oldspeak will be a regular spot for me. Thats exactly what I'm telling you. Old Speak Bar is that place and it's only for 21 and over. Plenty of books neatly organized and lots of places to get cozy. Whether you are a group of 4 or riding solo, get a drink, find a book, and unplug from the world. I had a great time last night with family and friends. There's some much eye candy and thoughtful pieces properly displayed inside. Our bartender was very friendly and totally felt bad when the beer I chose was out and he had to go change the keg. I lived that life some thirty years ago. He made sure that the my pour from the new keg was done right. All-in-all, Old Speak checks a lot of boxes. It's not dark, it's away from the hustle and bustle and you can totally unwind in the way you want to. " A room without books is like a body without a soul." -- Marcus Tullius Cicero

Please, let me paint this picture. We arrive around 5:25pm on a Sunday. There is no one else in our…read moresection when we're seated. We order our drinks and food at the same time around 5:30. I, a type 1 diabetic, take insulin at 5:37. We then watch as our server takes a drink order for another table that has joined our section. And watch as the server bring them their drinks. AND watch them take the tables food order. This took about 10 minutes. We then sit for another 20 minutes without seeing our waiter. We try to flag down a busboy cleaning tables across the room. But he doesn't see us. We begin to wonder if we're being ignored because our baby cried at our waiter lol. At 6:07 one of us from our table makes our way to the front to find anyone to ask about our DRINKS! We then see that the other table is now getting their salads. So this is the point we decide it isn't worth it and leave for the In-N-Out across the parking lot. We did hear from our waiter as we left that he "put our food order in, but forgot to put our drinks in." Which is one thing, but to not check on your table in over 30 minutes is wild. It is a shame because we were looking forward to trying their food, but I don't imagine we'll be back. 0 Stars
