I moved to right down State St from the Local, so my parents and I have been here twice now. The first time was amazing food, but the service wasn't great, super rude and impatient. The reason we went back the second time was because we remembered how good the food was and how nearby it was too. The second time the food was still really good, but the service was HORRENDOUS. Brittney was such a ***** to me and my parents, my mom especially. My mom was complimenting her and something about the food, and she straight up just walked away in the middle of my mom still talking. And no it wasn't busy. It was towards the end of the night, there was maybe 2-3 other customers there. She acted like we were bothering her the whole time. Then once she'd leave us would just stand up at the bar flirting with the other guy working there and just ignore anyone else. Then on top of all of that, my dad tells me she added $10 onto her tip! FRAUD!!! I've attached photos as evidence. My dad still tipped her even though she was so rude and disrespectful. But apparently that wasn't enough for her and added $10 onto the total. I cannot believe that. And my dad tells me it was difficult to get his $10 back after calling and talking to the manager. He didn't get the name of the manager but he said that they were just making excuses and saying oh but she's our best server. Obviously not! Saying things like oh she must've just been really busy. Again, we were there when it was dead and about to close soon, no it was not busy. It's almost as if this business does this type of thing often because there was no alarm from the manager, then finally after much deliberation decided to send back the $10. Absolutely ridiculous. No : "I'm so sorry here's a free meal on us", or atleast a "here's a coupon or gift card for next time you come in", nothing. This is the type of thing that gets people closed down. We should report to the BBB. This is insane. And to not be offered anything to make it right is what really gets me. Like do they not want us to ever come back??? Not to mention tell everyone we know, etc. Yikes! And this is what we get for wanting to support local businesses instead of going to the big chains. What a bummer. read more

Loved this place the moment it opened! And they have a lovely bartender who is fun to chat with but intuitive enough to know when you want to focus on your bar mates. The food is simple and good, the wine selection is good enough for me, but wow... it's looking tattered. No longer a place where I would feel compelled to get dressed up, so if I'm in search of a destination, this wouldn't be it. My first time coming here to eat and was not disappointed! I had the Taco Trio (Chico, pulled pork, and seasoned shrimp). Very very good and large portions! I also had the soup of the day and a glass of Chardonnay. Absolutely delicious! Keith was my server and he made the whole experience even better! Very kind, knowledgeable, letting me know what the flatbread and soup of the day, were. We found this place when looking for a place to stop after a long road trip. Our expectations were exceeded! I had called just to confirm they were "patio dog friendly"- they confirmed so we headed to The Local. We arrived and they already had a table set for us on the patio- complete with water for our pups and an adorable doggie dinner menu and cookie. The people food was amazing too. We've been here a number of times in the past few years and stopped by early (before 5) on a Friday for a low-key celebratory dinner. The past few time we went were always very good, but tonight had some detail issues that made it not as good as it's been. Our server was sweet, but: Brought only 2 set-ups for clams for a party of three. Had she checked on us we could have asked for that, but there was no check-in. We would have ordered more bread, which would have added to her check. Never checked during the entrees. We might have requested additional drinks (up charge), I'd have liked some coffee (upcharge), and the $25 short ribs were unusually dry with about a tablespoon of sauce. More sauce would have helped a lot. She took one plate even though two people were done. When she returned everyone was done, bit the plates remained. In the end we chose not to get dessert simply because of the service. It's too bad for her, because a 20% tip on an additional $30+ would have increased her tip by $6. We'll return, but it won't be in the next few months. read more

8/27/2024 this is in an easy to find spot. We walked in and chose a seat outside today. Our server was super sweet and took great care of us. I ordered the sliders and my friend got a BLT with a Cesar salad. The food came out in a timely manner, and it all looked so fresh and delicious. The three sliders were able to fill me up, and my friend also loved her meal too. I will definitely be back to try more off their menu, and I can't wait! Thanks for taking great care of us and for making high quality, delicious food to eat. The restaurant has indoor, outdoor and bar seating. The Local The Local in Boise is "a neighborhood Eatery and Wine Pub, offering live music and rotating artists." They also have a dog, friendly patio and a Dog menu. MW and I visited during Happy Hour, which is Monday through Friday from 3 PM to 5 PM. We ordered a mix of items off of the happy hour menu and the regular menu. We started with Hurricane Popcorn - A Hawaiian favorite - with Nori Furikaki and Japanese rice crackers. It was very flavorful and unlike any popcorn I've ever had before. This is a unique menu items The Local is known for. We ordered two side Caesar salads. I like that it had homemade croutons, but it needed a little more more dressing. We shared an order of Carnitas Street Tacos, to which we added 1 extra taco. The pork was tender, but the tacos were pretty bland. We shared an order of Smash Sliders - 3 smash burgers using our own custom burger blend from Porterhouse in Eagle, with classic American cheese. They were tasty. Unfortunately, I forgot to get a photo! We shared two desserts: Berry Crisp - Blackberry cobbler topped with vanilla ice cream. The berry crisp was excellent! Crème Brûlée - Simple and delicious vanilla crème brulee. The crème brûlée was good, but not great. The texture wasn't as creamy as it should've been. We visited early on a weekday, so we didn't get to hear any live music, but we pretty much had the place to ourselves until towards the end of our visit. Overall, the food was good, but not great. However, they do have a bigger menu than most wine bars and they allow dogs on the patio. The Dog Menu looks excellent! The Local has a nice Wine Menu, as well as several local beers on tap. If you're looking for a nice wine bar with a neighborhood pub vibe, The Local is worth considering. I would like to return and try their Pepe's Famous Fish Tacos. The pictures of their flatbread look excellent too. * The Local is wheelchair accessible. Recommended! read more

I've been frequenting the Local for years sitting at the bar sometimes chatting with Keith the bartender. I have one kidney and sometimes I can plan for a bathroom break and other times just need to get it done quickly. That's what happened the other night. Both bathrooms were in use. I may have jiggled the door knob two times too many, when finally one of the users came out. All's well. Not so much. As I walked back past the bar Keith says to me "You don't say that to the boss". I looked at him waiting for a punchline, but there was none. Keith had a prior choice here. Take the boss's comments in and continue his shift and not try to shame a long standing customer or be a boot licker and use his boss's words to belittle a long standing customer. I've heard more than once, since the son took over the bar from his Dad things have gone downhill. I guess. Maybe they should get another toilet in the back for staff. read more

Nice little restaurant on State Street. Good service and, though offerings are limited, they are all good. Love the clam appetizer.

Con: Pretzels are big and fluffy like bread and the jalapeño cheddar dip had no heat whatsoever and the cheese was chalky. Unfortunate, because I had been dying to try the famed pretzel. Do you like Wine? Do you like Happy Hour Specials? If so this is the place for you. I have actually been here 3 times now for happy hour but today was the first time I tried food. I love they offer a house white or red for $5 from 4-6pm. They also have a happy hour food menu and specials each night. One Thursday evening we even stayed long enough to listen to the live 2 person band. I can't speak for the dinner options but the tapas and flatbreads are delicious. The food was bad. We ordered the short rib, the plating was strange, but the short rib was even more strange and lackluster. Ordered salad with my meal, not sure what the chemical taste was from (most likely from not washing produce). No complaints with our server, only with the food. Traveling with a dog during a hot summer is a tough time to find good food. I found The Local by searching dog friendly restaurants on Yelp and we couldn't have been more pleased. Staff were friendly and welcoming. Shaded tables in the outside setting was very clean. Imagine our surprise when our waitress brought our menu she included a dog menu! Bean ordered the Turkey, rice, and veggies! Ice in her fresh water bowl too. What a pleasant surprise. As for the humans, shrimp cakes and smashed sliders were delicious! TIMING IS EVERYTHING. And now-is-the-time to support this mom-n-pop owned neighborhood place which is one of those rare birds where welcome is warm, service is charming and the vibe is one that works for grown ups of all ages (21+). It seemed propitious at the time when new owners took over The Local on January 1, 2020 to refresh it in every way so that it might realize its' potential as a neighborhood spot for libations, eats and community gathering. The husband has 20+ years of restaurant experience and was also the accountant for this business for the original owners. He could see this gem's potential - never quite fulfilled by previous owners in the five years it had been open and with significant sputtering towards the end. He and his wife had a plan to retain what was valuable and improve what needed work. They just had everything in the groove by late February 2020 for Grand Opening. Then in late March 2020 "OH NO" timing of covid19 closures intervened. As of June 2020 The Local is open again. Customer support now can make the difference between survival or extinction of a mom-n-pop like this emerging from covid19 closure. This is a good time to put The Local on your radar if you are ready in your own covid19 're-entry' to go back to a gathering place for sipping and dining indoors or on their patio. VIBE: *Clean & Bright - Under new owners the place has been spit-polished to sparkling! Windows in front let in lots of light. Roll up door on side leads to small seasonal patio. Local artists' work - changes periodically - displayed on walls. Ceilings are high. All covid19 protocols are in place for servers using masks, etc. *Seating - Some high seating at bar and standard height tables and chairs throughout. A good - and needed - change due to covid19 issues is they removed some tables. Too tight tables were a problem under previous owners. Table removal - done here about March 16 so even before covid19 rules for 6' minimum - provides "breathing room" for all customers and for the first time makes access more than ample for ADA which requires only 36" path of travel between seats. Good for them. (I have a dog in this hunt. I have had MS since my college days. ADA has been law since 1990 - but many eateries and bars ignore its requirement for equal access to tables for customers with disabilities. Now we've all had a weeks long covid19 dose of what it feels like to be shut out maybe more folks will pay attention why ADA being followed to let everyone participate is important.) *Music - Good tunes on sound system at a level that you know it is there but doesn't compete with conversation with your table mates. Prior to covid19 close, local musicians performed on some nights. I imagine they'll plan that again. SIP & NIBBLE: Food is significantly better with new ownership than it was just prior but this is still best in and is not destination dining for take out. Based on four visits between January and mid March...in fact my last table-service lunch anywhere was at The Local on March 13...and trying take out since, this is a place for dine-in hospitality and to enjoy wine by bottle or glass, beer from taps or local ciders along with light eats (like sandwiches, soup, cheese plates, flatbread, salad) or entrees (like clams and sausage, short ribs, mac n cheese). They also recently added T8 - Trade Eight - bottled cocktails to the libations list. Trade Eight is a jazz musicians' term and that the cocktails by this brand are excellent is a good fit but also for the music theme since that is a passion of the owners' too and before covid19 shut down there were local musicians performing on some nights. SERVICE: Efficient and charming - thanks to Hailey (the owner's daughter with sparkling personality and a BSU grad student) and Tiffany (the stellar service star who used to manage Red Bench in Eagle and has also been behind bar at a popular brewery pub.)  Owner, Todd, is often in the house to talk with guests. CLIENTELE: A writer for the Boise daily paper who is himself often of the "YO Duuude" style, noted in a recent article that bad behavior by some patrons at some Boise bars to ignore covid19 distancing guidelines was a big concern to owners. He used the world "clientele" to say who they are makes a difference for covid19 distancing safety while socializing. Yep. And The Local's clientele can span all ages from early 20's through senior citizens, all having a good time with neighborly courtesy for each other. Not all adults of 21+ act like grown ups. But grown ups come in all ages and they come here. PARKING: Lots of it in the strip mall lot! read more

Found this place after looking for dog friendly restaurants as we were traveling with our German Shepherd, and we could not have been more pleased. This place is very dog-forward! The owner greeted us and was very happy to see our pup! They brought out a water bowl immediately as it was a hot day. The menu was delicious, modern, and paired well with the wine and beer offerings. They also have a doggie menu, and we were able to get a nice bowl of turkey and veggies and rice for our pup! I highly recommend this establishment, dog or no dog, it was excellent. read more

We loved this place when we went for dinner last night.. We stopped in Boise for an overnight and didn't have a clue where to go for light bites. We saw that they had sliders and soup and it was perfect! Both of us weren't that hungry so we split the sliders and we also got a cup of their New England Clam Chowder soup. Wow! The sliders were amazing .. never had sliders that good and their soup was outstanding.. I had a glass of their Mango Sparkling Wine and it was another remarkable taste experience. If we lived here , it would be our go-to place for a nice evening out. The outside patio was adorable and the servers were especially friendly and attentive. read more
