Tacos
Jacob D.

They seem to be a bit of a neighborhood, perhaps a city, staple for quite a while now since 1977. It's a small time spot with a location that has plenty of competition, original Ninfa's and El Tiempo are within a block or 2. Walk up counter to order from a pretty uniform menu. They have a couple of tables inside and outside, but I get the feeling there's plenty of to-go orders happening here. As a Houstonian, with plenty of experience in the Mexican food sphere, this is just an ok spot. The barbacoa tacos are well cooked but not seasoned as well as they should/could be. The chicharron tacos are fried in old oil, that's the only way I could explain the taste. That's enough of a mistake to knock a star off for me. Just not enough going well here for a recommendation.

The breakfast was really good! I wasn't a fan of the style of chicken they use for the crunchy tacos, but everything else was great. The service was impeccable and everyone I encountered was really nice. The location is in a great spot, but parking at be hard to find if they are busy. The vibes were very homey, I enjoyed it.

The best tacos. Beans ans tortillas so good. Love this place. Always come for my birthday breakfast.

Solid tacos in EaDo. Quite a few options to choose from, I got the bacon, sausage, and chorizo supers, which come with egg, potatoes, beans, and cheese. I think the bacon one is the best since you can really feel the texture of the bacon against the other fillings. My girlfriend got barbacoa and carne guisada, weird that only the barbacoa came with cilantro and onions and not the carne guisada. There's plenty of salsa verde bottles scattered among the tables, definitely ask for some salsa roja, that stuff is fire! (heh) Plenty of street parking nearby. Fair prices, decent portion size, not a crazy line on a Saturday.

Nice clean place, pretty small on the inside but we walked in and were able to sit down right away (Monday around noon). I ordered the enchilada plate and a fajita burrito with charro beans. The fajita beef burrito was tender not tough. Everything was made fresh to order and everything was so flavorful. It was an extra $1 for meat enchiladas but it was worth it! Small mom and pop places like this are usually the diamond in the rough! Definitely recommend this place!

Saw a line coming by here on the weekend and decided to check them out. They're located pretty much on Main Street Navigation in EaDo. Parking is pretty much streetside. They have limited interior seating and a few benches outside. The interior is a bit dated and was missing AC and had a humid odor. We decided to order and eat outside. Ordered a migas, barbacoa, bean and cheese, and chicharron and bean taco with an iced horchata drink. Their tortillas tasted handmade but were unfortunately a bit tough and chewy, not great. The migas mix was not good; honestly one of the more disappointing versions of migas that I've had. It was a bit bland and missing the usual rich migas flavor. The barbacoa was probably the best of the three tacos that I tried; unfortunately it was a bit greasy and somehow dry at the same time. The chicharron taco was unexpected; usually the pork skin is steamed or braised and soft; these had hard and greasy fried pieces mixed in with a generic bean spread. The grease they use was a bit heavy and tasted not quite fresh so that taco was not my favorite. The bean and cheese taco was as expected but their beans were slightly bland, so meh. The horchata was a bit watery. Overall, I think this is a fairly average taco experience. In my opinion; the breakfast tacos here doesn't hold a candle to Brothers (also in EaDo) in terms of flavor or value and the tacos here rank below even some of the less authentic taco spots inside the loop. I appreciate the handmade tortillas, but by toasting them, the texture and mouthfeel wasn't the best. The portions for each taco is honestly fair and larger than most street tacos.

I am always on the hunt for a good breakfast taco or burrito. Looks like I have found the best one in Houston so far. I actually saw this place on Eat Like A Local. Chris Shepard showcased this spot and I trust that man. It is an old building off Navigation and has been around since the 70's making homemade tortillas and tacos. They open early and close at 2 everyday. My first visit was in person. This place is small with some tables inside as well as some seating outside. There was a line when I came in and it can feel a little cramped. Customer service was good. I've only ordered the breakfast tacos here, but they do have a huge variety of breakfast and lunch tacos, breakfast and lunch plates, and sides. They have your everyday breakfast tacos around the 3 dollar range. For a little over 4 bucks you can get a super taco. Price wise it seems a little high for a taco, but they do no skimp on these things. I got a couple of super bacon tacos. These things had some weight to them. A mini burrito perhaps. It was filled with perfectly cooked, crispy bacon, eggs, potatoes and beans. The other tacos are specifically filled with what's in it's name. I thought I could kill super tacos easily, but I was full after just one. I saved the other one for lunch later. My recent orders have been through DoorDash to my workplace. We made a large order and they had everything just right and it kept its temp perfectly. I've tried all the super tacos and they are all good. Bacon is the frontrunner for me. They have red and green sauces for the tacos. The green is good, but the red packs some heat and tastes good as well. This isn't stopping my quest for the best breakfast tacos in town, but I will be comparing everything to this spot for now. I will be back.

Great spot. I would expect somewhat of a line. We got lucky and there wasn't one but it built as we waited. The people were really nice. We really enjoyed the bacon egg and cheese. They house make the flour tortillas and have store bought corn tortillas. Honestly wouldn't recommend the chorizo. It doesn't have that chorizo flavor or kick.

Villa Arcos was stop #2 on our 10 Tacos in 10 Hours tour around town this year and it still reigns as my favorite breakfast taco. The chicharron super is my go to, and the most unique breakfast taco I've ever had. The chicharron is fried and still crispy, not stewed like your typical chicharron taco. It's flavorful without being greasy and the super is nicely filling without having too much potato or beans. I'm not a huge beans person, but the refried beans here are just a swipe to add for flavor without making the taco too heavy. The chicharron here stands out as one of the tacos I think about the most when I'm out of town and is a must have if you're a chicharron fan.

What can I say about this famous breakfast taco place that hasn't been said before. This was my first time here after years of hearing about this place. I tried the bacon and egg, chorizo with beans and a basic egg and cheese for the kids. Everything was spot on. Flour tortillas.. delicious. Thick chunks of bacon and the chorizo has a distinct spicy flavor. My guess is that it beef chorizo instead of the usual pork chorizo. We sat outside and enjoyed a rare cool, sunny Houston day. If you're looking for some good breakfast tacos in this area, this is the spot.

Happy Cinco De Mayo! Met the ladies here to celebrate, & break bread…read more Thank you Jamila for selecting this original location of the Original Ninfas, to host, (our last supper, before your relocation from Houston to Florida.). A place I grew up in as a little girl in Beaumont but never have I've visit this "original" location. Stepping in to this spot felt like a restaurant in the country of Mexico. I ordered the El Henry. I absolutely loved my dish, only thing I would've chance was the cheese enchilada definitely would've swap for a chicken or beef one, or maybe even a flaunta. I really like the Mexican rice, it had little potatoes and carrots in it. Some of the best Mexican yellow rice I've had. They offer a cinco de mayo drink special. The only thing that seem to make it special was the drinks apparently were limited edition menu items. Nothing was special about the prices. The regular menu drinks were a dollar(s) less. The margarita I ordered first was peach coconut. I didn't taste the coconut at all. I swap for the peach strawberry ($14 or 15) which was great, sweet& strong. One did me just right. You get to select up to two flavors for additional $2 (for both verse each, that's a plus. Not worded on menu). If you select a third flavor an additional $2 would be added ($4 in total) I appreciate separate tickets provided after confirmation and no additional gratuity automatically added, which he got tip equally the same or more. When asked about the "empty" patio that was available, he informed us that the entire deck was reserved. Upon departing I noticed from the parking lot individual tables, of separate parties were occupying only 3 tables. It was 8 of us sitting at 2 tables. Which the table was pushed up against the wall, and one side was inaccessible, which took away spacing. Service was lovely space was really tight. Good thing some of the ladies didn't order full meals. Definitely wouldn't have been able to fit every plate.

Ambiance: upon walking in, it was chaos and sooooo many people standing up and sitting down. Walking around with drinks. I felt like I was in a club. A server made her way to me to take my Togo order. While waiting, I grabbed a drink at the bar and just made the happy hour cut off. Service was great as I was able to get my order and it was a large order. Everything was correct. The house margarita was ok, I wish I had gotten the hibiscus flavor. Order; Crab Tostadas Mixed Fajitas Snapper Mole Enchilada Ninfa 2 Tacos Margarita Mix The only thing I would order again is the crab tostadas and the beef fajitas. The chicken had no flavor at all. The charros beans and rice were not anything special. I was not a fan of either. Overall, we are not planning to order from here again. It just wasn't what Mark Weins made it seem like on his review. Also, whoever the driver was practically could not wait for me to turn around. Sorry, I had to take a pic. Very rude.

Upon walking in the restaurant was clean it was pretty packed for a Wednesday night but the aroma of the food! OMG! Our server was really nice and patient because my friend and I talked for about 30 minutes before we finally ordered our food. He has the beef enchiladas with rice and black beans. He cleaned his plate...literally not a grain of rice in sight! I had the smoked chicken verde enchiladas and WOW! What an amazing dish. I consider myself a Mexican food connoisseur especially being from California. I have always said Tex Mex?.....eeeeyuck! But Candente has changed my tune! I will definitely be back to visit when I return!

Glowing red. Burning. Candente…read more Let me start by saying that I'm not into Mexican food unless it's an auntie or grandma making it at their house. I prefer traditional homemade Mexican food but here we are. (Oh I googled and suggested this place lol) Went in for a team lunch on a Friday. Coworker's birthday lunch and she wanted Mexican. Party of 9 and we were seated promptly. They have a lunch menu and a happy hour as well as a full menu and full bar. The interior was nicely decorated. And open. There is bar seating and patio seating as well. Our waitress was Aisha and she was amazing. Friendly, helpful and patient. And able handle our large group and a few more tables with a smile. There were a variety of options. Salads, fajitas, nachos, enchiladas, etc. Also complimentary chips and salsa. My Order: chicken tortilla soup, lunch fajitas combo - chicken and beef. Chicken tortilla soup (3.5/5) - it was a bit salty for me but I am not a salt person so most things are salty to me; everyone else said it was tasty, there were tons of shredded chicken, avocado pieces, tortilla strips Fajitas - combo (4/5) - chicken was seasoned well and the beef (medium rare) was perfection and so tender and juicy, mexican rice was fluffy, and normally I would pass on the beans and get extra rice but my coworker suggested the charro beans and wow, that was a win - the seasoning was great, there were chunks of meat and the texture was nice, the only thing that could have been done better is the flour tortillas - they over-charred them making them too crispy and left them with a burnt taste. A couple of people got the elote salad and raved about it. So that will be a next time try. Def will be back. Everyone enjoyed their meals and some even ordered food to go. Would recommend.

Parking can be challenging on weekends, but there is complimentary valet and a few extra spots in a lot across the street. There's interior and exterior seating, with cozy booths and tables. Service is friendly. Chips and salsa: Superica has some of my favorite chips, crispy and thin and perfectly fried. The avocado crema salsa and warm serrano pepper salsas are delicious with a mild kick. The bottled red salsa is fresh and green salsa packs a nice punch. Migas: Scrambled eggs with tortilla chips and cheese, choice of chicken versus chorizo on top, finished with fresh avocado. I really enjoyed this combination and the generous portion for the price. The eggs are well scrambled without being dry, and the pairing with cheese is proportional. The chicken was a touch dry, but some salsa solved that well. I enjoyed stuffing each component into a fresh tortilla and devouring it as a breakfast taco. Refried beans and rice: Really delicious. The refried beans are of the smoother variety without as much chunkiness, which I prefer, and topped with creamy cheese. I could have used a touch more tomato in the rice, but overall enjoyed the texture and flavor. Patatas with salsa roja, topped with egg: I enjoyed the flavors in this dish, but there was sooo much salsa. The potatoes were thus a little soggy, though still cooked well. The over medium egg was cooked nicely and complemented the potatoes with creamy yolk. Bacon: Really generous portion for $7 as a side, and cooked well. Crispy potatoes: I enjoy that these are fingerling potatoes smashed and roasted, but they could be crispier. They seem to be on the blander side on purpose to allow seasoning to taste, and I really like pairing them with the red bottled salsa provided at each table (probably due to their association with ketchup). Hotcakes: The literal star of every brunch, these hotcakes are consistently delicious. They're massive yet somehow cooked perfectly through so that they're fluffy and soft on the inside and just with a slight crunch on the outside. The pairing of the creamy warm (!!!) maple syrup is heavenly. Because of how huge these are, usually one is enough to share between two people, although they also come in stacks of two and three. For reference, we finished 3/4 of three between four healthy and hungry people and it wasn't for lack of trying. Whenever I crave weekend brunch, Superica is always a top option.
