Went on a Saturday during dinner time. Great atmosphere, very busy, nice aesthetic. A lot of variety in terms of food! The line was decently long but pretty quick and food came out in less than 20 mins which I would consider fast service since it was very busy. In my honest opinion, taste was 7/10 coming from someone who is a fan (and avid consumer) of Indian food, i've had better but would go again (and get something differen) and recommend to someone wanting authentic-ish indian food. I got the chicken biryani and it was blander than I would've liked, not in terms of spice but in terms of flavor overall. Also got the dahi papdi chaat which wasn't as sweet as I think it should've been. Pink chamcham dessert was 10/10. If you like sweets you have to try the chamchams. read more

How have I missed this gem of Indian food? Vik's serves street foods that are not commonly offered by other restaurants I've visited or catered. They have amazing dishes that I have never tasted before and it's plentiful to share. I've had the puffy bread, dosas, lentils, pakoras, garbanzo beans,...I won't even try to regurgitate names because I know I will mess them up. Dishes are served cafeteria style but they are quick to come out and also provide take out boxes should your eyes be bigger than your stomach (like me). So far I have been here twice and both times I was the last to leave. They close so early or I was just having a great time talking and savoring all the dishes PLUS dessert! Yes, they have a refrigerated section with all types of desserts so of course you have to grab a box to share (or not)! I would love to come back to try other dishes and shop in the store next door. Too much sev, tasteless sprouted moong, absolutely tasteless. Should I give benefit of doubt that this was a one off case? I don't live in the bay but when I do come up from LA to visit my bf, Vik's Chaat is always a MUST. There aren't even words to describe how delicious every meal I've had there is. My bf is Indian and he says that Vik's Chaat tastes JUST like his moms cooking, which means it's made with love and warmth and not a lot of restaurants have this affect on him. Homemade cooking at its finest. I have something different every time I go because the meals tend to change. I usually order chicken curry but it's always a different kind of curry with different sides and it's always delicious!! Don't know how I missed this gem after living in Berkeley for 4 years! This place is absolutely awesome. It's a drive from South Bay but well worth it. The Cholle Bhature is the best. No one even comes close in the Bay Area!! It's that good no joke. Dosa masalas as well as their daily specials. Just order at the counter and wait to be called for self service pickup. Probably my go to place for a quick bite of Indian snacks. Love their chole bhature. A look at their wide array of Indian chaat is enough for one to end up ordering way more than you can eat :( food is yummy and freshly prepared. They have a grocery store adjacent to the restaurant which has a good stock of most Indian grocery needs and also packs in-house prepared stuff (pickles etc). What to Order: 100% do not leave this establishment without ordering their Pani Puri - it's the best I've had in California. They are creamy, crunchy, spicy and sweet and every time we introduce someone to Vik's, this is always the reigning favorite. Vik's also has some really delicious curry's but they rotate every few days so I can't recommend a consistent favorite - although if you see their yellow fish curry, that is the one we order whenever we see it. Their other curries have been okay but not as good as the pani puri and yellow fish curry. We always get a young coconut each which helps cool down some of the spiciness of the food. Tips: Vik's is a cafeteria style restaurant where you order at the front and your food gets called out when it is ready and you go over to the counter and pick it up. They also have a great Indian market attached to the front of the restaurant so leave some time to browse around before you go! It's also a good budget meal and it's great for a date or with a group of friends where you can split and taste multiple things! We always leave very happy and satisfied. read more

Went to Vicks when visiting Berkely based on the number of reviews expecting some good chat, the place is huge clean and good. However were extremely disappointed with the chat items we ordered. Ordered dahi papdi chat, dahi batata puri and pani puri. Pani puni had puri which were filled with half a teaspoon of potato or less, with a side of tamarind chutney and pani in separate sections. The Dahi papdi was a small plate filled with papdi around the circumference, which were smelling rancid because they were old, and filled with chana, dahi and sweet chutney. Similarly with dahi batata puri.. there was no garnishing, no sev puri on top.. not appealing at all. I have gone to many chat places in LA but had never had this experience before. This place has a great social loud environment and inside a Indian grocery store. You have to get in line to order you food and pick it up from one of the counters when your name is called. The food comes out pretty quick, small portions, but over all the taste of the food isn't so flavorful. The environment was great however the food was not. The food also ran out by 7:30 so just keep an eye out at what time you come for dinner. If you love flavor this isn't the place for you. It is also self clean up after yourself. read more

To the chef/owner of Vik's PLEASE do not serve the side dish with those little soy "balls" in tomato sauce. I have NO idea what they're made of but they're super overly processed and taste horrible. Also the vegetarian spinach/lentil/eggplant was a pureed and tasteless vegetarian option. The Daal is usually the safest side dish, so I'd recommend keeping that and not those soy balls. Visited the restaurant after two years on 29th June. Not the same one as I experienced earlier. In Vegetarian Thali saag paneer tasted very mildand the curry was definitely not fresh made on that day. Even Dal Makhani also has the same issue. Other dishes ordered in this visit are : Uttappam - 1/2 uncooked. Pav Bhaji - bhaji is very red in color and oily. The dish tasted oily. My husband and I absolutely love this place. Can never go wrong with Vik's if you are looking for delicious Indian food. The flavors are mouth watering. My husband always orders chole bhature or dosa or both ( or he makes me order one so he doesn't feel guilty about over eating). I like the Biryani and chaats. Both are savory. I've been coming to this place like a pilgrim for nigh on 20 years. Maybe more. I love their latest incarnation. It's clean and pleasant and still so yummy. The dosa are to die for. Heck, everything they do is to die for, and it's nice to see their eponymous fare in the market. Which is considerably smaller than what I remember from their first location--but still really good. Aged basmati rice? What even IS that? And every kind of pickle you could imagine or your heart could desire. Also fresh curry leaves and all kinds of great frozen prepared treats. But the lure, as always is the dishes they prepare in house. And they are as charming and gracious as always. Plus, they still have sporks. Which is hilarious. We have been coming to Vik's for many years and it has been good. They have increased their prices on pretty much all the dishes which is also ok with us. However the Bhel Puri we had today was stale, no crunch at all. Came all soft and soggy. The Dahi Papdi Chaat was just ok with all Chana and one piece of potato in the center. I've been coming to Vik's ever since the restaurant was a few tables in the back of a grocery store on Allston Way. I don't know about authentic, but their food is consistently delicious. Oh my god! This place is bomb! The moment you walk in, you are greeted with smells of home. It does get crowded but the line is manageable. The menu is full of items that are traditional Indian street snacks and entrees that I could only get at home.
