As many others have said, the view @ the View is nice. The rest is full of disappointments.. Here's a good tip, buy your drink from the bar. Same price as ordering from a waitress and you get it in a larger cup. We tried some of their $5 apps (which our waitress seemed to avoid telling us about). Calamari was the only decent item of the 4 choices, however they use a little too much sauce, leaving the bottom layer soggy & wet. Sushi was horrible, threw away half of our order. Also tried a tuna/lobster app that reeked of rotten fish. My buddy saw someone eating a burger and asked our waitress if he could order one. For whatever reason we weren't given the menu that included burgers or wraps. The burger wasn't good and the bun was stale. I can't see how regulars keep coming to this place for food. Atomsphere was great! Live music on a Saturday night was also a great touch... Four of us went this past Saturday and the food was very good but small portions... The Thai calamari was excellent but spicy! The mussels were also tasty but very small. Out of all of the main dishes we ordered the winner was the scallops over the lobster risotto. The wait staff was accommodating in one of us was a vegetarian and prepared a pasta primavera for their main. The other dishes were the filet mignon and the salmon. My mother-in-law wanted to eat there after reading a review. We had reservations for 7pm, and we arrived 6:40. The hostess told us that we would have to wait, and ask us to wait in the bar. You could plainly see that there were 10-15 tables open that we could be seated right away. I HATE WHEN PLACES DO THIS. We wait for 10 mins or so, then were seated. We ordered a Thai calamari app, and I ordered an iceberg lettuce salad to start. The calamari was good, and it had a kick to it. The closer you got to the bottom, the more kick the calamari had. The salad was very good. I ordered the Mahi Mahi special with crabmeat on top, with corn and crab risotto. My wife got the Filet Mignon. The others got skirt steaks. Everyone thought their food was well prepared, and it tasted very good. My wife and I split the Chocolate Bomb, and my mother in law got the Berry Cheesecake. The cheesecake was good. The Chocolate Bomb on the other hand was the only let down. The outside of the cake was tart, and the inside didn't really have a flavor. The peanut butter ice cream was good, and the only thing either of us ate. Overall, the food was good. The people are the "Boat Crowd" and Hipsters to me. Beautiful spot in Oakdale! The place itself is gorgeous, reminds me of being out in the Hamptons and as the name suggests, the view is incredible. Visited view a couple of months ago for restaurant week and it was my first time there. I was really excited to try it out because the menu looked amazing and it sure didn't disappoint. I was there on a Wednesday which is half off any wine bottle so right off the bat I felt like this place was right up my alley. We started out with an Albariño and as appetizers I got the Caesar salad which was a good portion for an appetizer. From the price fix menu I picked the crispy chicken which I expected to be nothing crazy but it was honestly one of the best meals I've had in a while. Overall, this place had it all- great decor and atmosphere, amazing service and even better food and I can't wait to go back! read more

Came here during restaurant week on my birthday. There's a reason why it's called View- it's an amazing view. I (like an idiot) asked to be seated inside because I was afraid of being cold (dumbass). Sit outside if given the choice. They gave us bread- sorry, fluffy buttery clouds. Seriously, omg how do you even get bread to be so fluffy. I started with the mushroom rice balls and my fiancée got the potato leek soup- both delicious. We both got the cioppino ($7 up charge). Most amazing sauce and tons of seafood in it mmm so good. The best thing about the view is the view .... everything else is ok at best. Tonight, we went for dinner and ordered a special that was fillet minion tips over pasta. The beef was over cooked so was the pasta. The menu is not very extensive but on the weekends they do offer sushi. We ordered sushi and the rice was hard and cold. This is a place that lacks attention to detail. The wait staff for the most part, include young college kids who do not know much about working in a restaurant. For example, I finished my dish before my wife was done with hers and before I could even put the fork down the bus girl took my plate. It is rude to take a plate unit all guests are done eating. This way no one feels rushed. If you want to enjoy drinks and look at the view then this is a great place. If you want a nice dinner, I would go somewhere else. read more

The only good thing I can say about The View Restaurant is that it does have great views if you get seated right. About everything else in this place reeks of mediocrity from the service to the food. The restaurant is located on a slight peninsula in Oakdale, giving it beautiful views on two sides of the restaurant. They also have a bar area and an outdoor patio that must be pretty popular in summer time. The restaurant gets busy but not totally full on Saturdays and can't seem to keep up with the pace. Their food is OK but certainly does not fit the bill for the place this restaurant wants to be. We tried the spicy tuna roll and the mussels for appetizers. The tuna roll was a special and it seemed this place should not dabble with sushi. Being next to the water does not automatically give the chef expertize on sushi. The mussels left a mixed feeling: while the milky buttery broth was delicious, it was over salted and some of the mussels were not the freshest and tasted funny which made it a disappointment. The main course items we chose were the Miso Glazed Salmon and the Free Range Chicken Breast. Both were dull and lacked inspiration or any uniqueness. The chicken was similar to Boston Market with a few exotic looking vegetable fragments thrown in the sauce. The Chocolate Bomb desert was decent and came with delicious salted caramel ice cream however the Creme Brulee was barely crusted and appeared to have been done in a hurry given the evening rush. The servers are nice but they lacked the training to deal with the crowds on a Saturday. Lucky the place was about 80% full, it may have been a melt-down if it was fully booked. Finally the valet was a mess, took forever to get the car and then when they brought it over, we had to wait until the incoming cars that blocked us were moved. Quite a bit sloppy for a place billed as elegant. In all, the View Restaurant is exactly as the name implies: a great view and not much else. I just had my day-before-my birthday brunch here with a few girlfriends; I have quite a lot to say about our experience. There is quite a lot of items to choose from & many things were quite delicious like the bean salad, tomato salad, tomato & mozzarella salad, the peel-&-eat shrimp, the omelette made-to-order, the rigatoni in a pink sauce, & the steak at the carving station. What was not good was the crab legs which were over cooked since they are sitting in a silver pan being constantly cooked by the steam of the water from the hot sterno, the paella which was so dry & the mussels literally filled with rocky sand as you try to chew it but have to just swallow it because they were so dry & shriveled up. Also, although the fresh whipped cream & fruit was awesome, the desserts were just not good at all. The chocolate cake & cannoli tasted like grocery store dessert, overly sweet, filled with preservatives, & fake tasting. For the price, there are many things to choose from, the view truly is stunning, & the service was very attentive. For what you get, it's a good deal because I drank plenty of coffee & mimosas. Stopped in this week for some evening drinks and maybe an appetizer as the reviews for this place were mixed. Fantastic location and a really great view of the bay, but unfortunately that's all I can say that's good about this place. The service was super slow even though it wasn't full. I had to wave my waitress down to get my drink order in. The Malbec my gf got wasn't very good, tasted like an old open bottle. My first draught was flat, so I had to wave the waitress down again (because she was ignoring us otherwise) and got a different beer that was fine. After that replacement beer we never saw our waitress again until we asked her for the check, which was nearly 25 mins after getting my beer. I had considered getting a bite, but if this was going to be the continuation of service I just wanted to leave. I'll try this place again on a happy hour or a brunch when it's busy, because the view really is awesome, but I won't be rushing to get back. Good luck. read more

The View is one of my go to restaurants. The food is good, no doubt about that but I don't go there because it's the best food around. There are some very good restaurants on the south shore. I go there because all n all it's a good dining experience. The dining room is beautiful and the staff and service are always professional. The "View" obviously is beautiful from any table in the main ding area. The GM Joe Scalice, always greets us when we arrive and always checks on our table during our meal. The waitstaff and buss staff are all on the same page as every glass is filled and any issue is dealt with quickly and appropriately. My boyfriend was disappointed right off the bat with the beer. having worked in the beer industry he was off put by the buttery off flavor in his beer, a symptom of dirty draft lines that produced "diacetyl". We ordered Thai calamari and pei steamed mussels as our two appetizers. The calamari was delicious but the mussels were old and had that old mussel smell. We were disappointed to only find calamari rings and not a single tentacle. We ordered sushi which was fine. There was miscommunication between the waitress and my bf, he got an assorted sushi dish and wished to substitute yellowtail for the white tuna. when his dish arrive it was entirely white tuna. Went with a party of 6. Had a reservation for 9:00. Asked to be seated outside but the maître d' said sit inside, have a drink, and when a table opens up I'll move you outside. But after 40 minutes we sat at our table having seen the waitress once when she took our drink order and again when the drinks came. The Savion Blanc delivered to our table had turned sour in the bottle before it was served. It sat waiting for the waitress to take it away. No bread for the table for 45 minutes. Just the bus girl hovering with water. When the waitress did reappear I mentioned that we'd like some bread, a bus boy came back with 5 rolls for a party of 6. Finally after nearly an hour the appetizers arrived. The seafood bisque was ice cold. We sent it back. The calamari was sickeningly sweet drowned and soggy in some kind of Asian sauce. After another 1/2 hour the waitress appeared and announced "I'm sorry that it's taking so long but the kitchen is working on that party over there". Sure enough, besides us there were about 10 or 15 other people in the entire dining room. Entrées were served by bus staff. I had the Scottish Salmon which was the size of a Rolled Gold Pretzel Rod. I had to reach onto the table behind us to fetch silverware as everyone's was bussed away with the appetizer dishes. All this magic for ONLY $250.00 (before tip) because the manager grudgingly took the soup (which remember was ice cold and no one ate), two watered down gin & tonics, and the sour wine which was quite possibly skimmed from the canal, off the tab . . . Don't waste your time or money at this seriously overpriced slop trough with tetchy service. read more

Six months ago I had booked a room at View over the internet for 30 people for today's brunch. Sight unseen as I live hours away I relied on the opinions of two family members and internet reviews. 43 people had RSVPd... Cousins, aunts, uncles, and extended family from Florida, South Carolina, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, all five boroughs were coming. View accommodated us with no questions asked. (Thank you Courtney and Joe Scalice - your communication was wonderful.) This morning we arrived at an exquisite view of the Great South Bay, and a venue with a valet who waited patiently as we unloaded. We were greeted immediately and graciously by the host who directed me to the bridal suite so that I could apply my makeup and fix my hair. I gave him a hug for his kindness, as I was working on four hours of sleep and three hours of driving. As people began arriving the staff went out of their way to smile, assist our guests, some of whom needed guidance. The sushi chefs were in our room, their faces wide with smiles. Our servers were friendly, well dressed, attentive, professional, and courteous. The mimosas were liberally flowing - I'd like to give a thank you to the gentleman whom after I asked for a double mimosa was happy to oblige with the next batch. When asked for a candle for a slice of cake the hostess returned with a handful! The buffet spread was top notch. New York bagels (If you're coming from out of state this is primo importante';) schmear, lox, jams, salad, shrimp, king crab legs with clarified butter (OMG - Can I get an AMEN?!), roast turkey and beef, eggplant rollatini, chicken cordon bleu, pancakes, bacon, real sausage (again, you NY'rs are spoilt because you get such a thing), omelette station, red velvet three layer cake with cream cheese icing..... carrot cake and those little puffed layered pastry creamy sweets that I'm sure have some name that I can't pronounce. We took our time, to say the least. Our brunch began at 11 am and we finally shuffled out of there at 3 pm. The valet was quick and responsive, no scratches on the car, Iphone still on the floor mat where my SO left it. If you're thinking of booking View for an event, do it. Thank you, View. I wish I hadn't set such high expectations for this restaurant. The appetizers were good; the mussels were amazing but the crispy calamari were over saturated in the spicy Thai chili sauce. Our party of 4 each picked out a different entry: braised short ribs, sea scallops, swordfish, and the lobster pasta. I really wish I had gotten the pasta because the braised short ribs fell so short. They were supposed to come with a white chocolate parsnip purée, and there was none. The swordfish and short ribs were dry. To top it all off, after we received a $200 bill, my boyfriend had given the waitress cash and she didn't even return the change back to him-- he was missing $17 worth of change. As a waitress, you don't preemptively assume a costumer is going to give you a tip; let alone a $17 tip for a $200 bill. We ended up asking her coworker to bring her back to our table, she looked at us and said "oh you wanted change back?" Ugh....yea? You don't just not give back a costumer his change!!!! Overall, food fell short of our expectations, the wait staff is young and inexperienced, although the bus boys had more common sense than anyone there...someone should promote them. Not happy. We selected The View for one reason, to enjoy the outdoor dining area overlooking the water for my wife's Birthday dinner. They would not seat us outside because there were five of us in our party. Apparently one too many they said. Only parties of four or less could be accommodated on their deck. They sat us near the window where we could see the water. We could also see a party of seven seated outside and two empty tables that could accommodate a party of five. Won't be returning. I am so disappointed. My husband and I have been waiting to come here for a while now so it being his birthday this week what better time? Well we took our teenage daughter and cousin and we went. I was so excited! The place looked beautiful I loved the lighting it was perfect- The decor was simple, rustic beach and it is somewhat elegant. The view was astounding; this is where me being impressed ended First off I went to the ladies room and it was disgusting. OK...now...this was a little strange The wait staff seemed to be all 16 year olds in training- maybe 2 adult servers in the place. Our server was nice but tired (and an adult) who introduced us to her very young helper ( a teen training to be a waiter) The place was full of teens running around and chit chatting in corners joking here and there while we sat with finished plates and melting ice glasses on the table between each course, while we looked around for our waitress. Every course I had to ask kids to remove and bring items they had no idea how to see what was needed or how to observe the diners- Real awkward. Typically in a place like this there are older professional staff. That is a big part of the experience. Everything took forever to get done. FOOD: We got an $11 dollar order of truffle "steak fries" for the table. No truffle to be found, the skinniest tiniest fries I have ever seen, enough to be a handful in a metal cup with a tiny sprinkle of parmesan with a ketchup on the side- ??? My husband and daughter both ordered off of the prix fix restaurant week menu: ..My daughter got the kale salad, and the shrimp with Pea shoot risotto with "buerre blanc " sauce. The kale she did not like because it was very vinegary but the rest of us picked on it. It really was hard to eat. She also didn't eat more than half of her entree which was pretty unimpressive actually. Looked like simple unseasoned cooked shrimp on a hardened risotto bed and the exact same drizzle I had on my dish they called "citrus gastrique" on my item-the exact same. My husband had peking duck tacos appetizer. And the upgraded choice of Chioppino. The moment those duck taco hit the table I started to worry because they were a joke. They looked like They had been prepared HOURS ago and waited somewhere to be heated and run out to a table. No remarks about them as he ate other than "was this chicken I thought it was duck"? The chioppino that was a $14 up charge on the restaurant week menu (making his meal $43) was basically and unimpressive; an over cooked small lobster tail and a few tiny shrimp and some clams and mussels floating in saucy "broth". I was a little irritated I mean it looked dry and thrown together and it was UGLY LOOKING. He ate the rubbery prepared seafood dish and got through it, no comments. My cousin and I ordered off of the regular dinner menu. He had a really beautiful looking dish, the lobster pasta- I was jealous it looked so good. couldn't try it because there was bacon in it but he said it was fabulous I had the seared scallops with maine lobster risotto and "citrus gastrique" aka "beurre blanc sauce"from my daughter shrimp dish. It was ok (4 scallops tiny portion barely any risotto and hard like oatmeal that sat for an hour...or hell risotto that sat for an hour) The scallops were completely raw inside. I asked my server and she said "oh yes it is supposed to be that way we always cook scallops to medium rare" ...these were raw not medium. They seared it on to hot of a pan and the outside caramelized but the inside didnt catch up in time. SO ...They brought me a plate to place the raw ones on and brought them into the kitchen leaving me with the one scallop that was not raw but actually medium of the three and the risotto which was solid, but loosed a bit when i stirred in the citrus oil "gastrique" from around the edges. The dish tasted good But it was weird to have half of it leave and come back. BUT For $36 it was a total disappointment. The desserts were really good- especially my husbands cheese cake with mixed berries. FRESH whip cream very nice. My creme brûlée was delish but was only about a 1/2 inch of thickness in the dish which was strange, they did manage to get the burnt sugar nice and thin and perfect. That is a plus. Here is my take on the place- They claim to be upscale but a lot of what we ate was prepared hours earlier we could tell hello I cook more elaborate at home regularly so we know good fresh food. We were expecting freshly prepared High end food and staff who know what you need when you need it or in the least, know to ask- What we got? Although kind, our server was impossibly hard to track down. It took too long to be greeted by her. We finished our appetizers before she came over to our table again. I was the one who suggested we order our entree then. The food was nothing more than okay. Certainly not worth the wait or the price. The drinks are good, and of course there's a nice view. Unfortunately, the good things end there. I know times are hard, but the service and food used to be so streamlined, and are now a big letdown. I remember when this was Riverview, never ate there but had some drinks. They have redone the place nicely. View is spectacular, sat outside, tables furniture are very nice. Although for a Monday afternoon I was surprised that the music was 'club' type. I figured it would be more mellow. In any event, had the Duck Tacos - they were delicious, but they used an avocado puree which I wasn't a fan of, the popcorn shrimp was tasty but a bit greasy. For entrees, we had grilled chicken sandwich, where one of the pieces of chicken was undercooked, otherwise it was enjoyed. The other was the lobster wrap and it was mostly lettuce and little bits of lobster meat. Overall, you are paying for the location, and the view definitely has a VIEW! I would go back and try it for dinner, also would consider going back by boat, they have plenty of open slips. read more

Just had the rehearsal dinner for our wedding here last weekend and so happy we did. Can't beat the location, patio is great, bar is fine, decor is tasteful. Had a seating snafu to start and Holly said, "Just tell me what you want and we'll make it happen", and she did. First, get Christina as your server if at all possible - attentive but not too much so, friendly but not overly familiar, knows the menu and can guide you well. Had a guest who eats very plain food but didn't advise Christina to start with. After an overly flavorful dish was ordered and served, Christina swapped it out in minutes, and did so with cheer - really top notch. Party of 20+ and not a bad dish from appetizers to dessert, with a few true standouts and a couple that weren't stars. Highly recommend: for appetizers, mussels and calamari; for dinner, scallops, lobster roll, pappardelle; for dessert chocolate bomb. Fine but wouldn't rush to order: Baked clams and sliced steak sandwich. Appetizers are large and satisfying. If you order the iceberg salad and the mussels, you have a meal. Holy cow we've spent a lot of money there throughout the last year. The inside is cool looking and my wife really likes the atmosphere, but don't come here too late on a Friday or Saturday. I was amazed at what I saw when I walked in there on a Friday night at about 10 PM. Jersey shore meets Long Island. The guys in the bathroom were actually talking about their weightlifting schedules. I started laughing. Despite all of that, I still have a good time. It was funny. Anyway, My sister her husband love happy hour here b/c it's $5 apps. I've been going to the View or Riverview since my twenties and I'm in my late forties now. I haven't been there in about 10 years because I never thought it was great food and because I have moved to Nassau County. I went more for the nightlife and water view. My sister-in-law, sister, friend and I decided to go to an early dinner this afternoon to the View and it was the worst dining experience I've ever had in my life. I was late in arriving around 3:30. Everyone else was there at 3 pm. We were chatting and I was wondering why no one was coming over asking for drink orders, app orders or dinner order? We finally had a waiter or server ask for our order close to 4 pm. At this point I was starving and we ordered calamari as an appetizer and placed our dinner order. He said he wasn't our waiter and he or she would come over. Our waitress comes over and explains her shift started at 4 pm. Ok, was she the only waitress? So my sister-in-law knows I'm starving at that point and says can you please bring us bread. The waitress doesn't respond. My sister-in-law then says or french fries something. She says ok. The Manager comes over and apologizes that we waited so long and says first round of drinks are on him. Two of us weren't drinking but we ordered 3 drinks. The waitress goes over our order to make sure the first server/waiter (not sure what his occupation was there) took the order correctly. We get the appetizer and ate it fairly quick as we were hungry. As we are waiting for our food an order of oysters is being served to us. We tell them that we didn't order oysters. Then a salad comes before the appetizer and we said it's not any of the salads that we ordered. So, two food items came over in error. I said out loud I hope our order isn't served at the wrong table concerned more so now with the virus. I would have an issue if my food was at another table. Finally, our food comes. The server grabs a plate to serve and has his back towards the platter of food. A big bird lands on the food. My sister concerned mostly with a health issue that I have says we are not eating any of that food. The server says the bird landed on the edge of the platter. I told him I saw the bird land on the chicken but, don't know if it landed anywhere else Or if the bird grabbed any food. Three employees were standing against the restaurant facing us doing absolutely nothing started laughing when the bird landed and were laughing at our reaction. No one prevented the bird from landing nor did they speak up and say where the bird landed and the food could have been easily replaced where the bird touched. The chef comes out and first words out of his mouth are, I can't control the birds. Very unprofessional. My sister was annoyed at what he said. We then also realize that one order was incorrect and at this point I lost my appetite because it was one issue after another. We waited a long time to be helped, order was confirmed too many times, one of the orders was wrong, 2 orders come over in error, the bird lands, they don't tell us exactly where bird lands and could have easily resolved the issue by just sayIng we will replace that meal, all employees we dealt with were rude and unprofessional. The waitress comes over at some point and said something to us I guess to make up for so many errors. I said no, it's ok it's been one fuckup after another. She gets offended and is rude and thinks I was nasty to her. I tell her I didn't say you're a fuckup. I said their has been so many fuck ups. The manager then comes back for a 2nd time and tells us they've never had a bird land on food. Lol, sure youv'e never had a bird land on any food. I'm finding it extremely hard to believe a restaurant on the water that's been in business for many years has never had a bird land on food. Amazing. A bird decided to land today, July 23, 2020 on our food. Comical. I tell him So you are saying a bird didn't land on our food after he says a bird has never landed on food. He gets insulted by my comment and is rude to me. Again, very unprofessional. The manager tells us no charge on anything. I would think not since the experience was the worst and we didn't eat anything except the calamari appetizer and maybe drank half a corona and water. I suggest that the waitress, manager and chef learn how to communicate professionally to customers. They were all three rude and clearly can't handle dealing with customers.
