Limited beer selection would be the only thing I would change but you can find something that works. Wine selection is decent. We had the Mussels in a wine sauce which were very good, the oysters Rockefeller which were the best I've ever had, including when I make them, the fish and chips which were outstanding and the brussels sprouts which were also very good. Reservation was easy to make on Resy. We arrived a bit early and they took us in no problem. We've tried a number of places in PJ and we've really enjoyed most of them but I think we're going to be regulars at Castaways. It was really tremendous! read more

We went down port on a whim on a beautiful summer night. Part of the fun was taking a walk and finding a a great spot for dinner. The restaurant was packed, but people were also finishing up their meals so we gave it a shot. We were able to sit outside and the outside dining area was set up really nice and comfortable with bistro lighting and even some potted palm trees. Felt more like San Diego than Port Jefferson. Inside was also tastefully done up in the nautical theme which is good to know if it's a rainy day or in the colder weather. I've read some reviews about the service and we had the exact opposite with super attentive service. Our server, Brianna came over right away and took our order in no time. I mentioned doing a dish gluten free and she asked if I had celiac. She went above and beyond making sure that my meal would be safe to eat and offered substitutions so there would be no cross contamination. I've had the condition for 18 years so I know pretty well what I can tolerate and that most places let you down and I just deal with it. That wasn't the case at all here and Brianna made sure of it. We started off with the spinach artichoke dip and this was one of the best versions I ever had. Like in the top 3 really and one the other two was home made. It was that good. I had plenty of carrots and celery to nosh on with the dip and they kept the bread on a separate plate altogether. Like I said, they really understood my condition I also had bariatric surgery back in the winter and I'm slowly venturing out in the world of solid food. So I picked the surf and turf steak and lobster sandwich. I figured I know I can handle steak if done right and I wouldn't be too bummed if I couldn't tolerate the lobster. Brianna had it served to me on a really good gluten free bun. This sandwich really worked out so much better than I thought it would. The steak was exactly to order and the lobster was super tender. I was only able to have maybe a fifth to a quarter of it. That's equally because that's all I can physically have these days and because the sandwich was beyond huge. The rest of the family's choices were home runs too and included a killer wedge salad, a perfectly cooked burger and salmon. Those were devoured so no complaints with those as well. It should be noted by the reactions by everyone at the adjacent tables were having a very similar experience and it was just a really enjoyable time. Our family is getting older (aren't we all), so diners and moments like this are so special. Castaways definitely held up its end of the bargain. Prime location in port that's been on the "try" list for a while, and it didn't disappoint. The ambiance is great, food was very good, and overall a fair value (mostly). As many other reviews have mentioned, service was horrible but thankfully it was a beautiful day and we were in no rush. -Calamari: 4/5, not overly fried with that heavy feeling after eating deep fried food. Flavor was good and the Thai sauce paired well with the peppers. A little light on portion but overall good. -Lobster Roll: 4.5/5, went with the cold version and it was definitely one of the best I've had on the island. Much better than the place up the street with the word in its name! While it was stuffed the flavor was lacking a bit but still very good. I'd come back just for this. -Coconut Shrimp: 2/5, no bueno. Way over cooked, and definitely the worst value overall among the things we ordered. 5 small fried shrimp for $22. Caesar salad was very good too. Overall we were happy with our experience. We're fans of Drift 82 so this was right up our alley. Service was definitely lacking but still a solid experience and we'll definitely be back. read more

Everything we had tonight was awesome. Love the decor and ambience. We started the mussels in green curry sauce, it is absolutely best sauce I ever had with mussels!! The tuna tartar served with fresh taro chips. I can eat the chips all day. Lol. The tartar had a nice soy and sesame taste, it was perfect. The salad with arugula, beets, goat cheese and pumpkin seeds were the perfect blend of texture, whatever the dressing was added the perfect harmony to blend all the texture together. Castaways might just be one of my new favorite restaurants to go to on LI. It is SO cute on the inside with a nautical / ocean theme. We honestly stumbled in here randomly and I am so happy we did. We ordered a chicken caesar salad and the surf and turf sandwich to do splits with for our meal.... But I need to take time to talk about this tuna nacho special.......... It was actually perfection. It is served on wonton chips with jalapeños, avocado, some spicy mayo and honestly the best/freshest tuna I have ever tasted. SO GOOD. The bartender James was fantastic. We're out here visiting a friend and hubby says we have to go to Castaways. The reason? You gotta try the oysters. So we arrive with our pup and we are seated outside in a nice little corner. I already love that we can bring her. The cocktails were not great but not boozy enough for the price. The calamari is tender and perfectly cooked and I am loving those hot cherry peppers. The oysters...amazing!! Really good and next time I'm gonna order that with a side of pasta and call it dinner. Hubby got the seafood risotto ...he didn't love it. My book club went to castaways for our holiday party! We had so much fun here. This place is so cozy and decorated very well! I was so glad to see someone open this place back up and have a nautical theme. Service was perfect, everyone was very nice & attentive. The menu is a perfect size in my opinion, my friends and I had truffle fries and the steak sliders to share, I thought they were delicious! Steak was cooked to my liking. Courtyard Dining, Food & Service Don't Match the Price Yesterday we went to Castaways Steak & Seafood in Port Jefferson for dinner with a group of seven, including three kids (two ordered adult meals). Meals Ordered: Our table had a variety of dishes -- seafood risotto, two 8 oz filet mignons, a cowboy ribeye with additional side dishes (charged separately), a chicken Milanese special, and one guest who opted for two appetizers: the tuna tartare and steak sliders. I also paired my ribeye with the lobster bisque, which was flavorful. Patrizia's chicken Milanese was seasoned nicely but thicker than she prefers. My ribeye, ordered medium rare, came out medium and was tougher than expected. The kids' filets were ordered medium but came out medium rare, though one enjoyed her baked potato side, which was generously portioned. Drinks & Setting: Since it was a pleasant day, we sat outside in the courtyard-style space, which has a lively flow of people walking by. I ordered a Bloody Mary (it was Sunday, after all), and we also shared two bottles of mineral water at the table. The overall atmosphere was casual and bustling. Service: Service was just average -- polite but nothing memorable. Despite mentioning the issue with my steak's doneness, nothing was adjusted or discounted, and everything was billed at full menu price, including the ribeye's extra sides. Pricing & Value: The total came to about $485 plus a standard tip. For that cost, we expected better execution in the kitchen and more attentive service. Multiple issues with steak doneness, along with ordinary service, made the evening feel very overpriced. Overall: We had a pleasant dinner as a family, but in my opinion, Castaways Steak & Seafood doesn't justify the premium prices. The courtyard setting is lively and convenient, but the food and service didn't deliver enough value. Two stars. Cautionary Tip Update - reviewing the menu for the review it looks like maybe the bill included a 20% auto tip. I must have not checked the receipt carefully. But we added extra tip which is unfortunate. Be careful with this auto tip for six or more. Maybe with larger parties I can see but to auto tip 20% on six people is ridiculous. read more

Probably my 15th time eating at Castaways... I'm saddened to report, if you can't hold on to a cook, hence you're going to have issues. 3 times a charm and from what I've learned the new cook is the 3rd since they opened. Grossly over salted dishes, undercooked tortellini, all of which were identified as noticeable changes behind the scenes. Castaways has a chance to lead PJ village as the best destination but management needs to review what is being served. Lastly, recent menu changes were disappointing. We were excited to try Castaways, especially since the previous restaurant had been a longtime family favorite. We were also encouraged to learn that the current owner operates Drift 82 in Patchogue--something we quickly recognized from the menu and viewed as a positive sign, as we've consistently enjoyed our meals there. Our first few visits to Castaways were very good and led us to return several times and recommend the restaurant to friends. However, during a visit last summer with a party of 10, I noticed a decline in food quality. At the time, I attributed it to an "off" day. Unfortunately, our most recent visit with a party of five confirmed those concerns, and we all agreed afterward that we would not be returning. I often order the TNT salad at both Drift 82 and Castaways, so I'm very familiar with the dish. This time, the portion at Castaways was noticeably smaller--about half the size of what I've received previously. The salad is typically well-balanced with tuna and fried calamari, but this version was overloaded with calamari (all rings, no legs - usually not the case when I've ordered it) and contained very little tuna. The small amount of tuna served was an unusually bright pink color, which suggests it had been treated to mask freshness and quality - Google that tidbit if you're unfamiliar and you'll be glad you did. Anyway, as a result, I did not eat the tuna and only consumed the calamari. The lobster bisque was too salty to eat and was ultimately removed from our check. While I understand that bisque may contain minimal lobster, this one included only a spongy piece from a small claw, and the overwhelming saltiness made it inedible regardless. Other dishes at the table were similarly disappointing. The crab spaghetti was heavy with oil and lacked flavor entirely. The sea bass also had no discernible flavor, although the menu states it is pan roasted with green curry. The fish and chips were the lone exception, the diner was happy with it - after he added much needed salt. We had hoped Castaways would continue the strong start we experienced early on, especially given our positive experiences at Drift 82. Unfortunately, the decline in consistency, portion size, and overall quality made this last visit a deciding one for our group. I'm sharing this feedback in the hope that it's taken constructively, as the restaurant clearly has the potential to not rely solely on location, and to be much better than what we experienced. read more

The Jerk Chicken Nachos had plenty of chicken but it didn't seem to be Jerk Chicken. The guacamole appeared to be over processed and runny, and there was hardly any cheese to be found. There was a fresh avocado slices on top. Not your traditional make his. The Shrimp Tacos on the other hand were very good. The shrimps (2 in each) were large and the sauce gave it a nice kick. I would rate this place 5 out 5 if they'd have a nicer manager. I was at the place just for drinks, the manager asked us to leave the place because my 6 years old was eating an ice cream from next door (notice it is a open space) and I already had bought an ice cream in the restautant to avoid them to think we want to take advantage of the sitting area.(but the little girl wanted her favorite one) I was so annoyed cause minutes before I heard her complaining about the live music they have at the patio (which was a band they'd hired). Lauren was the best waitress ever! The food, service and ambiance was so aesthetically pleasing and wonderful. We called and they accommodated us into the igloo immediately, with no questions. It was a plesent surprise and unforgettbale experience. We came in the rain, and Lauren still made sure to come and check on us with a positive attitude running back and forth in the pouring rain to attend to our needs! She was knowledgeable about the menu and everything she recommended we loved !! The crème brûlée was to die for and the crab pasta was mouth watering! We weren't rushed and sat for over 2 hours, being checked on and cared for in the best way! We hadn't been to this restaurant since it changed owners. Wanted to give Friday Happy Hour a try. Walked in - wow - bar area fabulous. Bar seating limited. Bartender was very welcoming. We were told we'd need to be done by 6:45 as a private party booked. And, happy hour pricing and food limited to bar, not bar area high tops. Hmmmm. We decided to stay, and we were absolutely delighted we did. Outside table on a gorgeous night. Waitress Lay, yes she's heard many jokes, was delightful. The manager stopped by to checkin to see if our party of 4 ok as we'd moved. And offered apologies for the need to relocate. Mussels, OMG, delicious coconut sauce. Lay noticed I didn't like the toasted bread that came either it and had the manager bring me two, hot, freshly baked bread rolls. Yum. Soaked up the sauce. Oysters, fried squid, crab. Macaroni.
