This was a great spot for lunch as we passed through Harrisonburg. We didn't want "road food" and found this place with a quick yelp search. The decor is super simple but do not be fooled. It is authentic and the food is 5 star! Very quick too which was nice for our agenda on the road. We both had the pho. I had the chicken and my daughter had the beef. The restaurant was busy on a Saturday night, but I didn't have to wait for a table. Got the pho - it was delicious. I didn't leave anything in my bowl. Spicy, hot, savory, just perfect for a rainy day. I ate a lot of one of the hot sauces, the darker one in the jar. Not sure what it was exactly, but it was really flavorful and I couldn't resist putting it on each bite I took. I also ordered a coconut juice, which was super cold and refreshing. Quick service, seems family owned. A lot of people dining seemed to be repeat customers and to know the owners. I also saw a ton of people picking up orders to go. 10/10 would come here again - in fact it would be my first stop in Harrisonburg. Came for a late lunch and the take out counter was much busier than dine in service. Staff wears masks and there is a sign on the entry door requiring them. Menus are laminated trifold and re-usable. I didn't see anyone wipe them down. But it may have happened. Tables are clean. No booths. Two open dishes of red condiment were on every table with small serving spoons. Because of COVID, we did not touch them. We were served A5 & A6 Pho with beef eye of round and flank - A6 also had tendon. Broth seemed generic, not even a hint of simmered bone. Pho broth takes a long time to cook and results in well-developed flavors. This was lacking. A6 Pho had a lot of fat in it . I was expecting tendon. But it was mostly fat. The minuscule amount of tendon I received was cooked until very soft. I could have eaten a whole bowl of tendon cooked this way. It was excellent. Meat was flavorful. I did not eat a chunk of it because it was green. It may have been stained by the jalapeño. But I wasn't going to take a chance on green meat. Toppings of bean sprouts, jalapeño, basil and lime were fresh. Basil was young and there was lots of it. Ordered avocado boba tea and unsweetened tea. Coconut boba was served by mistake. The staff quickly corrected the order when we pointed it out to them. This avocado boba is a fantastic, not-too-sweet beverage. The unsweetened tea is served cold, Vietnamese-style with thinly sliced lime in the bottom of the glass. It was good with a hint of spice. Parking is shared with other stores in the strip mall. The best beef stew noodle soup - heavenly broth with that umami flavor, tender beef and add the perfect amount of onions, sprouts, jalapeño, lime wedge, basil and the sriracha and you have a hearty, mildly spiced soup. The broth is so good you don't even need to use hoisin sauce. You can tell they put a lot of love and effort making this broth- and Vietnamese broth is very time consuming to make. The grilled pork with rice was delicious and well marinated, and the egg roll-- well, nothing can beat homemade Vietnamese egg rolls in my opinion, dip that in nuoc mam and you got yourself a treat. If I lived close enough, I'll be here a minimum of 2 days a week. 5 stars all the way! read more

I have been coming here for years and I am never disappointed. The staff is very nice and the food is delicious! My go to it the pho Ga (chicken pho) with shrimp spring rolls. The spring rolls are not fried and have a rice wrap which I prefer. The peanut sauce gives it that nice sweet taste too. The pho broth is very delicious. I always put a little hoisin and sriracha and a least one lime wedge for additional flavor. I would give this amazing restaurant five stars, but one of my biggest pet peeves is the quality of the chicken. Many other pho restaurants also have this fondue texture chicken. I prefer to see the striations of the chicken. Besides that everything else is top notch! read more

Vietopia is a great place to eat on the cheap in Harrisonburg, especially if you're on the hunt for that hangover cure. It's tucked into in a small shopping center and serves a large crowd of JMU students. $8.50 will buy you a delicious, generous portion of pho! I ordered the A10 Tai Nam and the noodles and broth were both perfect. Not sure why the broth looks so oily in my photo but the stock was actually quite refreshing and not heavy at all. Noodles weren't over- or undercooked and were firm yet easily chewable. One caveat: the meat was slightly overcooked, but hey things happen. The noodles and broth made up for it. Eat well and save money! If you're looking for a hearty bowl of pho with rich flavors you're definitely in the right place. read more

After a full day at Shenandoah National Park, we were dying to replenish our calories. Our first choice, based on Yelp review, was Kangnam Style. Too bad lunch trucks don't open during the weekends and we had to resort to our plan B - Vietopia. The place is a lot more elegant than the average Vietnamese restaurants. The hosts were very friendly. We ordered the following: S2 - Banh Mi Ga Nuong (Grilled Chicken Sandwich) A15 - Pho: Vietopia Special (Combination) 1 - Chef's Special Pho in Beef Stew (Saturday's Only) The A15 Pho was good, though the serving size wasn't as big as I was used to. The Chef's Special was a big departure from the everyday pho - the broth was full of spices, more similar to the Taiwanese beef noodle soup. It was a nice surprise for me. The Banh Mi was generously packed with pickled vegetables and grilled chicken and the bread was nice and fresh. A few bones to pick: while the waiting staff were friendly, once the food was served, you're out of their concerns. We even had to go to the register to ask and pay for the bill after sitting idly for a good 10 minutes. The owner was there just to direct the staff, he did not greet the guests at all. In general, the price point is above an average Vietnamese restaurant. Still, I think it deserves 4 stars. read more

Stopped here for dinner as we enjoy a variety of ethnic based cuisine especially Vietnamese cuisine. This small restaurant was cozy and the staff friendly. The menu is limited to appetizers, sandwiches, and noodle soups. We ordered 2 varieties of spring rolls, filled with chicken and the other with fried tofu. The spring rolls came with peanut sauce. We also ordered beef noodle soup with sliced brisket and meatballs. The spring rolls were delicious filled with lettuce, soft noodles and disappointedly scant pieces of the chicken and fried tofu. The soup's beef broth was delicious. The brisket slices tender. However our meatballs ( 1 meatball sliced in half ) were chewy and filled with gristle and we did not eat them or like them. We have had meatballs in other oriental soups and they should be tender. Also we were served a little dish of fresh basil, bean sprouts, sliced jalapeno hot peppers and lime wedges as condiments on the table. We were staying in Harrisonburg for a night on our way down south. We were looking for something for dinner, and my husband eyed this on a list provided for us by The Village Inn. We looked at the reviews and decided it sounded like the right place because my husband likes pho. He got the A9 combo pho and he said the broth tasted well developed and I think he would have licked the takeout by container. I got the chicken and rice. The chicken was tender and tasted like it had been marinating for hours because the flavor was through and through. I am not sure what the clear sauce was on the side (it tasted sort of like a sweet fish sauce), but it paired perfectly with the chicken and rice. We also ordered summer rolls and they were the least impressive - they needed more crunch-possibly carrots instead of the tofu. Service was quick and staff was nice. Prices are reasonable. read more
