I had a small group of four celebrating a bachelor. First time in downtown Harrisonburg and it is a very nice area to walk around with many souvenirs, antique and gift shops; restaurants and parking on streets as well as garage. I went into this unique place called Beyond Restaurant and Lounge which offers a variety of cuisines from multiple cultures. I ordered 5 items: 1) Chicken Lettuce Wraps 2) Pork Bánh Mi 3) Pork Dumplings 4) Pineapple Fried Wontons 5) Summer Rolls. The pork fried dumplings were crispy, compact filling and they delicious. I was a little surprised with the chicken lettuce wraps when it arrive to the table. The minced ground chicken mixture with herbs was tasty which were served with fried rice noodles but unfortunately the iceberg lettuce didn't allow you to complete the wrap. You were only able to make 4 actual wraps and after that you just have to eat the items individually. I wish it was served with butter lettuce or something that can better cup the mixture. The summer rolls were good and generous portion filled with shrimp, pork, vermicelli, herbs and a peanut sauce. The fried wontons were stuffed with cream cheese, pineapple, garnished with diced pineapple, bell peppers served with a pineapple relish. It was different from your typical cream cheese, it was good. The highlight of this trip was their pork banh mi. The bread was perfectly toasted on the outer layer and inside was soft, fluffy filled with tender pork, pickled carrots and daikon; cilantro, mayo spread and served with fresh sliced jalapeños. After the first bite, I wasn't able to just take one bite. It was amazingly delicious. The restaurant is clean, filled with beautiful decor, has a bar, offers interior and exterior seatings, and all staff are friendly. Our server was Kim and she is friendly, attentive and knowledgeable. Since it's a 2.5 hour drive, it was definitely worth it. I would make another visit and try other items on their menu. read more

I was torn between two scallop dishes, and thanks to Paige's recommendation, I went with the Sweet & Sour Scallops, and now I completely understand why they're a guest favorite. The scallops were perfectly cooked, the flavors balanced beautifully, and adding chili oil on the side took it to a whole new level. If you love seafood, do yourself a favor and order this dish... you will not be disappointed. Have you ever had a song stuck in your head and you know it will never stop playing until you listen to it from beginning to end? And maybe, if you're a foodie like me, you have a similar experience with a certain dish or type of cuisine. Such was the case on a recent visit to the 'Burg. I had to have ramen noodles with beef. And I wanted them spicy! So I asked for such when placing my order. And soon, out came a dish piled high with red noodles and the beef on the bottom (soaking in all the juice). I could smell the burn as it approached. After a few bites I had exhausted my water, tea, and handkerchief. I questioned if I would be forced to surrender and wave the white styrofoam take home container of shame. But I have climbed this mountain before. I know there comes a point (a runner's high of heat if you will) where the burn reaches its apex then levels off. It almost (almost) becomes enjoyable. And from there, it is just one delicious bite after another. Every noodle and every piece of saturated beef was gone when I walked out that night. But also, in temperatures below freezing, my ski cap was off and my jacket completely open. I needed a shower after that. So needless to say, it was an amazing experience. The team there are friendly, and concerned when they see tears welling up in your eyes. The chef obviously is one of great talent and I look forward to visiting and ordering other dishes in the future. Give this place a try! read more

This place has a wide variety of Asian foods on the menu. Most of my friends & I got sushi, however they have noodles, fried rice, pho, banh mi sandwiches, and lots more. I got the dragon roll. It was very good but could've used a little less sauce. The ambiance was nice - we sat outside so I cannot speak for inside. The reason I'm giving 3 stars is because our waitress was not very friendly. Every time we would ask for something, she seemed like she was getting annoyed. For example, there was 6 of us, we asked for straws and she only brought 4. When we asked for 2 more, she just walked away without saying anything. She also forgot to bring our sides of spicy mayo and again seemed like we were bothering her by asking for something she forgot. AND she also forgot to bring my friend's takeout order, so we were sitting there for a long time just waiting until she got up to go ask. The order had just been sitting on the counter. BLUF: tasty for the most part, but lacking in small ways. Needs more attention to detail so that the food you get matches the description on the menu. Four of us ate on a Monday night. Banh MI and fries: fries were tasty but kinda soggy. On the Banh Mi the pork was delicious, but veggies weren't pickled. it was basically a pork sandwich. Drunken Noodles: very tasty. but not spicy the way it was advertised. Angry Salmon Sushi Roll: pretty good sushi. but the menu said it was seasoned salmon, and it wasn't seasoned. The only heat was from a sliced raw jalapeño placed on top. A jalapeño which, because it was so hot, pretty much drowned out the flavor of the sushi. Chicken Vermicelli: chicken was very tasty, but there weren't enough vegetables and it was underdressed. Hot and Sour soup: the best part of the dinner. It has been a very sad couple of days, stuck in the depths of a recent snow storm. I was able to evacuate my humble abode for a leisurely walk and ended up at this establishment. I come to Harrisonburg every month or so for work, and Beyond has become a go-to restaurant for me because of one menu item--their hot and sour soup! The other dishes I've gotten before (pad thai, drunken noodles, various sushi) are fairly average, but the hot and sour soup keeps me coming back each visit. It's very flavorful, perhaps because of the shiitake mushrooms they use. Service is very prompt...my food has generally come out in 5-10 minutes of my order. read more

Enjoyed our sushi lunch here on a recent visit with family in the area. The sushi rolls are huge so they are worth the price. The nagiri sushi is also very large - both the rice and fish - be prepared! These are 'pick up with your fingers' sushi. There did not seem to be a lot of people in the building however, it took our server forever to come to our table although she was checking in on other tables. After several attempts to gain her attention, she finally came over after having to yell slightly to get her attention. At this point I was ready to go honestly. So I am not a fan of sushi, but my sister loves it. We got the Maryland roll and I thought it was okay and so did my sister. We also ordered the lettuce wraps which I enjoyed. Stopped in for dinner on a Monday. Hours stated were until 9pm. We were seated at 750pm. Upon being seated we were told that last call for drinks and food would be 830pm. So does closing time mean 9pm or 830pm? Little frustrating - post the time time that you won't wait in customers anymore. Drinks were good. Great bartender. Food was good - above average. Decided to stop in for sushi after orientation at JMU and already looking forward to our next visit here. The outdoor patio is very inviting and the menu had a good variety. We really enjoyed steamed pork dumplings... the pastry was rolled thin and delicate like gyoza. The crazy roll in special is worth trying... it is a pretty crazy combo of tuna, salmon, shrimp tempura and other stuff. We also enjoyed the Angry Salmon roll and the Seoul roll along with some of the best yellow tail sashimi. Yep.. ready for the next trip to JMU for more! read more

The lady that works there, almost everyday, is very rude, we try to be nice on several different occasions we were there but she is always in a bad mood.
