I will admit I am not the biggest fan of Pho as I don't eat beef and have been disappointed in the past by most non-beef Pho options. However, this place has great reviews so I wanted to check it out. One thing about me, even if I don't like something, I will always keep giving it another shot! I'm so glad I did because the moment we walked in, I could tell this place would be good. It smelled incredible in there! Also this place was packed, and more and more people kept coming in within the hour of them being closed. You can definitely tell that this is a local favorite, especially for JMU students. I got the seafood pho and was blown away! It was so flavorful and actually tasted phenomenal. I ate every bit of it. In the past I've found Pho to be bland, but not this one! I was driving on I-81 on a rainy Sunday afternoon in mid June and noted hunger. My Happy Cow app offered Vietopia as an option. The restaurant was quite easily accessible off of the interstate. I was able to park within 10 feet of the entrance. There was a couple just preparing to leave when I made my grand entrance as was immediately greeted by a friendly young Vietnamese woman whom i heard saying that she was the manager. Being naive regarding Vietnamese cuisine, she patiently answered my queries and took my order. I decided upon the vegan soup and Vietnamese iced coffee and was seeved within 10 minutes. The soup was piping hot, complemented by iced coffee which was good, and the soup was simply delicious. The ingredients are listed on the photo of the menus which I'll post by and by. As I type this, there are now about 5 people in the restaurant, 3 of who are ordertake out. I was excited to try Vietopia after seeing all the great reviews. My first visit was during a heavy storm -- thunder, lightning, pouring rain. A friend and I waited briefly for a table, then got seated. About five minutes later, a server came and took our order. There were two servers on the floor, but only one was actually attending to tables. After 35 minutes with no food and no check-in, I noticed other tables (who arrived after us) already eating. I flagged down the remaining server, who told us our order was never put in -- and the server who originally took it had literally left the restaurant with his backpack. So we left. I decided to give them one more chance and got takeout. I ordered A2. The broth was fine, but the meat in the pho broth container was underwhelming, and clumped together, while other pieces were dry in the container. On the plus side, they gave a generous amount of bean sprouts, the basil and 3 packets of sauces. I also ordered a matcha slushie with boba, which was pretty good. Overall, 3.5/5 but will bump it to a 4/5. Pho for lunch this past Sunday was a mood given the cold chilly weather. I came here with a big group, and fortunately, they were able to sit all 12 of us at the long table within 15-20 minutes of waiting. It was seasoned enough, but I felt like it lacked the depth of beef bone broth that I was hoping for. The broth didn't have much flavor (very diluted beef) with mainly just salt/MSG. I really liked the texture of the pho noodles here, though. The cuts of meat felt a bit off with its coloring and texture. I was pretty disappointed by the pho here and probably won't get it next time. One of my friends got the banh mi here and raved about the quality and fair pricing. The staff was very nice - the chef came out and even talked to us because I ordered one of his favorite dishes, the Bo Luc Lac (shaking beef). The portions were excellent - it comes with rice. It was a bit salty, we could barely finish it. But the flavor was there. We also got the Mi Xao Don, and spring rolls. I'd be surprised if they marinated their meats for 24 hours. Cause based on the flavor, depth, saturation of the sauce, tenderness, and savory quality to them... I'd expect them to be marinated for at least 48 or even 72 hours. The super delicious marinate completely penetrated the entirety of the meat. They were perfection.Expertly grilled as well. I mean... man... I wish I knew their secrets. This place would kill in D.C. I say that just so you know that this isn't just great Vietnamese food for the area it's in, where there are not a ton of Vietnamese options. This Vietnamese food could stand strong against most other Vietnamese hole-in-the-wall restaurants I've been to in the DC area. Can I also compliment the perfectly cooked, fluffy, insanely good rice. I feel like rice is an often overlooked side dish to certain cuisines. But when it's good... man it's good. I got the banh mi, which you guessed it, was served on perfectly warmed french bread that has a mildly crispy exterior and a soft chewy interior. The grilled pork I got inside of it was bathed in flavor. I wish it had a few more jalapeños and more fresh cilantro, but it was QUITE good and I wouldn't hesitate to order it again. The grilled chicken and rice platter I got was made up of most of the components I've been raving about. I will say that the light sauce that was served with (nuoc cham I believe it's called) it was 90 percent fish sauce. I think it could have been a bit more balanced. And the spring rolls I got had lettuce in it that didn't seem to match the pinnacle of freshness of most other things. It wasn't rotten or anything, just a bit more yellowish green than bright green. But the peanut sauce that was served with the fresh rolls was expertly balanced. It was hard not to use the entire generous portion they gave me. 100 percent worth a trip if you're in the area. The chef definitely has some skill in the kitchen, and I wouldn't be surprised to find myself in there sometime soon. I could eat it for dinner again tonight having just gone yesterday. read more

My sister and I rode over to Harrisonburg for a little outing and decided we were in the mood for Pho. We found four places after a google search and settled on Vietopia. Walking in, we were a little worried about how close the seating was but found a good space and settled in. I can truly say the seating space was the ONLY thing we had to worry about there. It took him 10 minutes to greet us and take our order. Pho broth was very good. The filling- meats very little for the money. There aren't too many options for Pho and Banh mi in Harrisonburg... this review isn't comparison to all other Vietnamese places I have eaten and are available to me... But if you are a college student, live in or are traveling through H-burg and need your pho/viet fix then this is the place! The place is small but has enough seating for a large group of 15-20 and about 8 tables for 2-4 people. The food is clean and staff are friendly and helpful. The broth for Pho is why you should come here... it's deep and flavorful and hits the spot when you're cold or just in the mood. I really enjoyed the pork and shrimp vermicelli and would get it again... my only critique is that my noodle was slightly overcooked and I hope it's just a one time error. I plan to try again so we'll see. I'll change the rating accordingly. The shrimp and pork spring roll was a bit dry from being left out but the amount of ingredients was generous and filling.
