This is an amazing spot in Harrisonburg. I am not from Harrisonburg and have only visited the area as my son who is considering becoming a Duke. I have now been to Cuban Burger twice almost three times. The third time we weren't offered a table as my daughter and I had 7 Brew drink in our hand so we didn't have lunch there that day. I will say that I love the flavors of Cuban. Everything I have tried has here been not but amazing. I loved their guava mint gingerale. Their Yuca with green sauce is amazing, along with the empanadas. The burgers and plantains are on point. I would love a cuban coffee added to the menu for after my meal. Here is why this review isn't getting five stars from me. The guy at the door is a little non-welcoming to put it nicely. I noticed it twice. He seems to make assumptions of why you are there. The first time was Sip and Stroll weekend when my husband and I entered the building and told us we should order from the window outside (assuming we were there for Sip and Stroll which we were not) when we were there for lunch. The second time I noticed was when my daughter and I were not offered a table as we had cups in our hands from 7Brew. He assumed we were there to pick up. Then after we said okay and turned to leave he is even yelling at us that there on signs on the door that state that (which we did not notice) so we couldn't bring them in. I totally get rules but I just feel he could have come across less harsh and perhaps we would have put them in the car and come back in for lunch. That day we decided to try some place different. I will say my server both times has been great though. The food has been great. I would like to come back but I am a little put off by the host guy. Cuban Burger is my kind of place, and it's become a go to spot during trips to visit our JMU student (Go Dukes). Food: The plantains with sea salt are a bit of a revelation. I've had many plantains, in the US and South America. I was surprised at just how good these plantains are, the salt adds to the flavor impact. The El Vaquero sandwich is the star of the show. Authentic Cuban dishes served up in Harrisonburg. Service: We've been several times and the service has been epically good. Friendly, helpful in navigating the menu and making recommendations, with a treat you like a local vibe. Stellar. Ambience: Cuban Burger has the feeling of a hidden gem, part dive bar/local bar, with an international flair. The bar has a small library of books I enjoyed flipping through. Drinks: My favorite mixed drink is a well crafted, authentic caipirinha. However, truly legitimate caipirinhas are hard to find. We got a table right away on a Friday night (away game weekend). They only had high tops and the seating was stools. We ordered Cuban sandwiches and something like a breakfast burger (it had a fried egg). The food came out without fries and it took about 20 extra minutes for the fries to show up. I liked the cuban- excellent pillowy bread and not greasy at all! My teenager gave the burger a 10/10 and is still talking about it. Service was super polite and attentive. Don't waste your money! This place is atrocious and they should be ashamed of themselves. Charging us an outrageous price for two Maka burgers And they were awful. Puny, dry, no flavor. Seriously, if they don't ask you how you like your burger cooked? You know you're in trouble. Cuban burger is a decent spot in downtown Harrisonburg. It has some steep competition being located right next to Bella Luna, but it holds it's own (somewhat). I ate here with a party of 3 on a Saturday night about an hour before closing time, but we could tell the staff were already about ready to call it quits (there were 2 other tables in the restaurant with us). We placed our orders and the appetizer came out quickly. We got the yucca with salsa verde. Yucca was decent, nothing exceptional; if anything it was slighly undercooked, feeling a bit raw in some of the thicker parts. The salsa verde, however, was delicious. So much so that we basically ended up saving it for our french fries and running out. For an entree I got the El Americano, basically the traditional American burger. Burger was good, juicy, and filled with plenty of toppings. But the fries were a disappointment. Flavorless, needed tons of salt and pepper to bring them back to life. The salsa verde was our saving grace, but when we needed it most it dissapeared. Also, the waitress did not come back to refill our waters until we had finished eating (nor did we even see her so we could flag her down). I get that it was near closing, but I mean there was still 30-40 minutes left, it's not like we showed up 10 minutes before close. I was in town visiting my freshman at JMU and needed dinner before hitting road back to Maryland. This was one of the best burgers I ever had. The restaurant is Cuban themed but I went conservative and got the Americano which is basically a cheeseburger with LT and pickles. The bun was so soft yet held the burger perfectly. And the skinny fries were crisp and perfect for dipping in ketchup. The manager told me the meat and buns are locally sourced. She said the Cuban bread is a favorite because it is made fresh. I LOVE THIS PLACE! My favorite hole in the wall in Harrisonburg. Burgers are fantastic, juicy/quality beef at a very reasonable price and portion. This visit I opted for the 'Cuban chop chop' which is essentially a burrito bowl- rice/beans served on top of lettuce. Decent portion and well flavored. The fried yuca appetizer is also very tasty. Burgers are great. The El Vaquero is delicious. I also really appreciate that they have a veggie burger so that I can eat here with my vegetarian fiance. The chop shop is also really good, and the garlic lime aoli is very yummy. The tostones are ok, they are a bit on the dry side. But be forewarned: the burgers don't come with fries if you get them to go. We thought that they came with them because the menu lists fries with all of the burgers. Beige fries, beige cheese, a couple of tomatoes and jalapeños--not worth it) *El Original burger (so bland, actually no flavor, remarkable actually) *kale Caesar salad (good baby kale, bottle dressing) *el vaquero (another bland burger, some kind of sauce, which made it better than the other burger, but it wasn't very good) Definitely order the Yucca Fries!! Beautiful restaurant, it had a very relaxed and homey atmosphere. Everybody inside were so nice and asked us how we were doing. We ordered yuca fries as our appetizer, and they surprised me. They weren't dry like others I've had and the sauce on the side was nice and spicy. I ordered the Lechon Asado, and the crispy pork was delicious. This is an awesome little spot in Harrisonburg. It was late and slow on a Saturday night but they were still open and I was starving. I got a mojito and a Hemingway daiquiri for cocktails. Daiquiri was delicious. The mojito was decent- I was expecting a more authentic mojito with crushed limes, properly muddled mint, and granulated sugar or caster sugar (not simple syrup). I only expected such authenticity because everything else was so on point. The sandwich was an amazing Cuban. The bread is shipped in from Ybor City and it's as good as it gets. Meats were flavorful and perfect ratio of meats, condiment and pickles. I devoured the entire thing and it was huge! The side of black beans were great too. They have a very cumin flavor. This was one of the places we wanted to try on our little weekend trip. When we walked up they said that they kitchen was backed up but that they could seat us in ten minutes, which they did so that was nice. My husband and I split a Cuban sandwich and it was delicious. We then had a side of fries which we all shared. Then we had an order of tostadas and they were good, but the sauce that came with them was absolutely gross- I couldn't even guess the flavor but it was one my reasoning for giving four stars. Then there was just a lot going on at the table near us with a family and their toddler literally running all over the restaurant, it was super distracting and disruptive to the meal. We also order the Carmel flan and it was good. The restaurant itself was cute inside, but small not great for large groups. Cute for a date night. Want the tropical island atmosphere right in the heart of Shenandoah? You can find that here at Cuban Burger, along with a selection of delectable meals! We visited here in the fall (September), so the temperature was still on the warmer side. One of the first things I've noticed was the blowing fans which was reminiscent of the Florida and islands down south. Coupled with the convenience of being located across a parking deck in historic downtown Harrisonburg, the venue was already a promising start. The staff was more than welcoming, who then provided excellent service throughout. We were led to an indoor dining area was generously spaced, allowing comfortable distancing between parties. The ambiance may appear a bit "divy" due to the relatively dimmer lighting and lingering notes of rum, however I would argue that it contributes favorably to this tropical feel of the venue. We ordered the Del Fuego Burger with a side of fries and the Cuban Chop Chop with added pork. The burger was great - not the best burger, but definitely excellent for originality. I personally found the green spicy sauce to resemble garlicky chimmichurri dressing rather than a spicy Mexican salsa. It was definitely a great pairing with the rest of the burger ensemble. Meanwhile, the fries were spot on and fresh! (Could have used a bit more salt, but you cannot deny that they were made nd cooked to perfection). The Cuban Chop Chop was refreshing, containing proportional servings of rice, greens, and meat. The pork presents a hash appearance, but do not let that appearance fool or dissuade you. The combination of the pan fried-pressed crunch of the outside and the tender and juicy pulled bits serves as a great topper protein to the overall platter. It is definitely worth trying. I would definitely recommend stopping here for a meal if you're in Harrisonburg, and I'm definitely coming back here to try out their other menu items! read more
