Very rare I would give such a low rating. I had high expectations based on the Yelp reviews. Set up was made for a sit down dine-in experience, but I was not expecting a pay first, then sit down. Pay at the register then locate a spot to sit down. When we arrived, the place was not busy. Had about three other diners other than us, which was a party of three. I needed some Asian food after a weekend of steak and potatoes, chicken sandwiches, and AYCE all-American breakfasts. I'll preface this review with saying I'm from SoCal and usually hit up Westminster or Garden Grove for pho and have had some of the best pho in San Jose, so when I got the bowl of pho placed in front of me, I was sorely disappointed. The broth was off, bland. Even the side of basil, bean sprouts and lemon were disappointing. Basil was wilted and the edges had browned. I'm not a fan of bean sprouts so I didn't care for it. I left only picking at the meat, which did not include all the assortment listed on their menu. I ordered the Viet Kitchen Pho, being a namesake dish, should have been their house special and have a bit of everything. My dish did not have tendon or tripe. The meats seemed to be the same cut of beef. Overall, left very unsatisfied, and I left my bowl full of noodles and broth. This is actually a no star place. I ordered a meal that had chicken, beef and shrimp in it. The chicken and beef were absolutely flavorless, tasted like they had been boiled and then thrown into the dish at the last minute, and tough. The shrimp came with the tails on them, but you are not given a knife to cut them off. So you have to pick up your shrimp with your fingers out of some Sticky, sugary sauce. The whole meal was bland and disappointing. It also said that my meal came with carrots but there was not a carrot in sight! They were very busy the day I went for lunch. Yet there were only two people working the front room. One young lady was taking all the orders, delivering all the orders and waters, and ringing up all the checks. The other gentleman only came out occasionally to clean the tables . Ordered for take out, and I was not disappointed! I got the chicken bahn mi and it was super tasty. There was a bit of cilantro on it, but it was balanced with the amount of pickled veggies and meat. I also loved having a bit of jalapeno in every bite. The bread was fresh and crispy, and the sandwich about a foot long. All ingredients were super fresh! We needed lunch in the area and I decided to go with this one. So I packed my family into a couple cars and we walked in. For starters, no one even looked up when we walked in so we stood there awkwardly for a few minutes. Finally I walked over to the counter and was like "are you open?" We were sat and checked out the menu. It's somewhat limited. My grandma decided she wanted shrimp but wanted it with rice instead of the noodle bowl since there wasn't a shrimp rice place. I asked if we could modify to make her one. I was told no, no substitutions. Now, at our local Vietnamese place in Chicago, I *always* order a meatball and tripe pho. I was told the only way they could do it here was by giving me a meatball pho and then charging me for extra tripe, they couldn't modify the combo. So, seriously, NO SUBSTITUTIONS OR MODIFICATIONS. I wish I hadn't gotten the pho. The broth was good but the noodles were over cooked and mushy. My spring rolls were good though. My kids got the chicken wings (Korean BBQ with the sauce on the side) and they were REALLY good. My husband sat at another table with my aunt, brother and grandmother and they all said they really liked what they had but I didn't get to try it. Our first time came here on a Friday night. We ordered the shrimp spring roll, oxtail pho and grilled pork dish. Our server is very friendly and placed our order quickly. We got the shrimp spring roll almost right away. It tasted really fresh and I like the pickled carrots and radish. The oxtail pho is really good too. I just think the meat could be a little bit more tender. They provide the bean sprouts and mint as well, you just need to ask the server for it. The grilled pork is very well seasoned and cooked perfectly. I like the pickled cabbage included in the meal, goes very well with pork. Viet Kitchen is a hidden gem. In the Home Depot shopping center, this little restaurant seems pretty low key. I was pleasantly surprised at how friendly and knowledgeable the cashier was. He was a latino man and knew the menu, answered my questions politely and never made me feel rushed. We talked a bit about the old days in Thousand Oaks with 9021 Pho (now closed). When I sat down, the food runner was very gracious. Now, I'm Vietnamese. That makes me a tough customer to restaurants like this. But the Bun Thit Nuong Cha Gio was quite good. My only criticism is the dipping sauce "nuoc cham" was really mild. I like a nice garlicky fish sauce. But the meat was cooked well the egg roll fried well and I pretty much cleaned my bowl. The matcha with boba I got was quite good. Well prepared boba. All in all, a great addition to the Vietnamese food scene in Newbury Park. I will be back again when I'm in town. read more

Coming from LA it's definitely difficult to find good restaurants around Thousand Oaks. Back in LA there are numerous places that have really flavorful pho without costing an arm and a leg. Viet Kitchen may not be as close to LA standards but it's A-okay when you're craving a really good bowl of pho. The quality is nowhere compared to let's say places in Alhambra or San Gabriel but it's definitely better than most places in Ventura County. I would put fried rice in my top 2 favorite things to eat. I would also consider myself picky when it comes to good fried rice. The Char Biu Pork fried rice is the best fried rice I've ever had, ever. I really enjoyed the how the char biu pork was cooked and if it weren't for my wife I would order a second just to take home and eat it when I have more room in my tummy. Soooo good!!! What a delightful experience for my wife and I. We love Asian food and we're recently introduced to Pho (pronounced "fu" as in fudge). Viet Kitchen did not disappoint! When you walk in, you'll notice and in credibly clean and uncluttered dining room. It feels fancy, but is definitely casual. You will order your meal at the counter, grab any seat, and sit back while you wait. We each had the pho and to say it was better than a night of hot $ex, would be an understatement. I could not wait to try this place. I love Vietnamese food. I got the shaking beef rice dish and my husband got his favorite, pork vermicelli. Service was fast and friendly. The food was really fresh and tasty. A couple notes: we only received one set of utensils, but it worked out because my husband used the fork and I used the chopsticks. On the menu, the vermicelli section says to ask for chili paste if you want it, so my husband asked for it when we placed our order. When the food came there was no chili paste. So he asked for it again, and they brought Sriracha, not the chili garlic (sambal) he was expecting. Very minor issues that I'm sure will work themselves out once the staff are more comfortable, and maybe when people aren't having to try to understand each other through masks. Nicely redone interior (Flame Broiler was here previously) that is open and accessible. The owner/manager in particular was so welcoming and friendly! We were going to do take-out, but decided to dine in. We ordered the shrimp spring rolls, chicken curry, and pork banh mi. All three were delicious! The shrimp spring rolls were extremely fresh with warm and cold contrasting ingredients. I'm usually hit or miss with spring rolls, but these were the best ones I've had in some time. I could have eaten them all had I been there alone. The chicken curry is something I've never ordered in a Vietnamese restaurant (reading up on it, it sounds like it's more common in southern/central Vietnam), but I have to say that this was one of the best things I've had in recent memory. The chicken was tender, nicely seasoned/marinated, and the coating was perfectly fried/crispy. The curry reminded me of Japanese curry more than other regions, and it was mild spice-wise, but still had a subtle build over time. The rice was cooked just right (not mushy/overcooked or hard/undercooked). Like the spring rolls, I highly recommend ordering this if you like curry dishes. The pork banh mi was solid. The baguette had that crispy crust you expect, and the fillings were flavorful and fresh. Not sure if a single banh mi would be enough for me since it's on the smaller side, but you can add more meat or veggies if you want. I'd probably add more pork for a few extra dollars next time to make it a heartier sandwich, since I don't eat the cucumber or cilantro. Finally, the owner/manager came running out of the restaurant when we forgot our to-go box at the table, which we really appreciated.
