Love Mandarin Bistro. Amazing food. Great people who work there. Today they were running a bit behind and they were super apologetic. No biggie - patience is the calm acceptance that things can happen in a different order than the one you had in mind. I had to write a review because I knew one particular person was going to tarnish them because they didn't have that patience. As I suspected, he did. See the other review entry for today. It's definitely him. Let me share with you the chain of events I witnessed that allowed me to connect the dots so I can likely assume was him. With us other patrons waiting so patiently, because again, the manager was sharing with us how they were looking and was super apologetic. One can only tell you 10-15 mins but hey I knew I wasn't the only one there. Except for this guy who believed he was the only patron and should have been waited on hand and foot. He says 45 mins. I call BS. I was there. At the end of it all, he and his party walked out because 10-15 mins in a restaurant with patrons eating in and taking out was "too long." Thank goodness. Plus his attitude to some of the patrons was gross. The cherry on top was he was honking his horn to Mandarin Bistro for some reason as he was driving away. Um ok? In conclusion to that fool, YOU want private dining, stay your ass at home. For the rest of the Yelpers, if you want amazing chinese food while supporting small business in Newbury Park, I highly recommend Mandarin Bistro with utmost enthusiasm! read more

I had this delivered so I don't know what it's like at the restaurant. The food is absolutely disgusting. I had the chicken/shrimp dumplings. They were bland, had a bone in each dumpling, and the sauce was just off and not appetizing. I got a rice noodle dish that has very little meat, and there was a corse curry powder on the noodles that made it unappetizing. They also left egg shells in the dish. Avoid this place at all cost. One of our go to places for pretty authentic Chinese food - if you know some Chinese, they'll offer you an assortment of options for vegetables for stir fry. We got the A-Cai stir fried with salted duck egg, which was the most delicious vegetable dish I've ever had in a restaurant. Stir fry beef noodles and walnut shrimp were solid. One of the many few restaurants open on Christmas day. My family and I don't have a traditional Christmas meal, as long as I have a warm meal in front of me I'm satisfied. Thankfully, Mandarin Bistro was open today and I was able to enjoy a delicious warm meal. It's my first time ordering food here and wow it definitely won't be my last. I had ordered the kung pao shrimp and mongolian beef which comes with choice of rice. I don't know how many times I said "mmmmmmm!!!" The food is just that good and so flavorful. I've tried other kung pao shrimp in the area and Mandarin Bistro knows where it's at. Overall very grateful, enjoyed my food and the portions were great. :D read more

The worst restaurant experience. After waiting for 45 minutes for our food, we went up to the owner and he couldn't give us an answer what the issue was. When we finally received our first of four entrees, the walnut shrimp was literally cold. After 15 more minutes, we again asked what is the issue with no answer. We walked out. Rated this 5 stars a few years ago. It was a weekly affair to dine there with 2 kids and weary parents. We were regulars. The gradual decline happened. Authenticity and technique are critical to Asian food. The gentle art of gracious hospitality in this day and age is disappearing. The older gentleman that used to run the floor, is now replaced by rude ex baristas that don't really care. Food is greasy, bland and in 3 of the dishes we ordered (broccoli, garlic chicken and fried rice) the raw garlic they used was sour - you know the flavor : the difference between pre chopped garlic in a jar va freshly peeled... but worse. Rice. Come on. It's a Chinese restaurant. They pulled it too early and the grains were still starchy. Sesame pockets were the hallmark of our previous visits but they are now a sad, microwaved shadow of their previous incarnation. "Is there anything else you need?" Was asked brusquely as she declared "Umm.... No" "Great" and she spun over heel and disappeared. Oh. You forgot a dish. Avoid this place. The previous owners had an amazing restaurant. PS. My partner was not feeling well and wanted some Chinese beef and noodles. I went in and ordered that, brought it home, got an entire to go container of noodles with a little bit of beef and broccoli sprinkled throughout. No sauce at all, no flavor. After reading good reviews, we hoped we had found our new Chinese spot. We ordered the duck for take out and it was very dry, nothing else came with it, no veggies or rice. Just a dry duck. Also, ordered the basil chicken and it came with fried rice. The rice was very boring and bland. The chicken just didn't have all the pow flavor I had read about and I couldn't finish it. Located in the large strip mall, this is my default and go to place when we want Chinese food because of its proximity to my house. The service and staff here are exceptional and regardless of my order size, food is usually ready to go within 15-20 minutes. I ordered online but you can also order by phone. We usually get takeout and they do a great job packaging everything securely. Always a concern when you've got sweet & sour soup in your trunk. They have lunch specials and I do actually recommend eating at the restaurant with a few folks if you want the best experience of optimal freshness of food. On nicer days they also offer patio seating so it's a good place to bring a couple of people and share some dishes. A few of my favorite items here: Chicken and shrimp lettuce wraps, scallion pancakes, hot and sour soup, war wonton soup, veggie spicy beef with eggplant, deluxe pan fried soft noodles, black pepper beef. Most of the items are good here they have dim sum options as well if you're really in the mood which is nice given we lack dim sum in the area. Not as good as say SGV or Chinatown but at least it's an option. read more

The food was just fantastic. I got the chicken Chow mein. No sauces needed... the seasoning and flavor was top quality. Why ever settle again for Panda when this gem in Newbury park exists. The service was great. The food came out within 5 minutes and the staff was very friendly. The ambience was okay--kitchen was a little noisy, just because of the set-up. This is my go-to-place when I want Chinese Food (around Thousand Oaks). What I usually get: Beef stew with steamed white rice. I'd recommend it- if you don't mind the cuts of beef that they serve- this is tasty and a bit spicy. On the lighter side: I love their steamed fish dumplings because it's flavorful, simple and healthy. (My friend who tried a piece from my order for the first time wished he had ordered this earlier too!) What would go great with this order would be an order of their garlic stir fry green leafy veggies (that's off the menu). Ask them about what kind of Chinese veggies are available. (Eg: Chinese broccoli with garlic) I also like their seafood specials. Mmm. Ginger scallion lobsters. A little pricy. Delicious! What I don't like: Any of their stir-fry noodles (with meat of choice). It is not a wow factor. I've given it a second chance, and a third. It's not working out for me- I don't like the taste. Best Chinese food in Thousand Oaks! They are a little more pricier than other local Chinese restaurants but it is definitely worth stopping by. Their beef chow fun and honey walnut shrimp are a couple of our favorites but other dishes like the eggplant with Szechuan sauce and Hong Kong style noodles are just as good. The most authentic Chinese food I had in Ventura. I got to-go from this place on Chinese New Year. I ordered the scallion pancakes and the deluxe pan fried soft noodles lunch combination. I was disappointed that they didn't have the sesame pockets or peppered beef noodles for me to try (probably because with CNY, they were very busy). But the food itself was very good. The scallion pancakes were thick with crunchiness and flakiness. The lunch combination I had was very delicious. The noodles were very soft and tasty, and the meat weren't overcooked or dry. It came with soup and rice, and those were great as well. From what I ordered, it cost about $17. All the food I got was very filling, and I had to save the scallion pancakes for later. So I think the price of it was reasonable. The service was okay. My friends and I called ahead of time for our order, and by the time we got there (30 minutes later), it was ready. We had to wait a while for the cashier to get to me (probably because she was busy with packing all the to-go orders she had), but she came swiftly. All the employees wore masks, and hand sanitizer was present. Overall, I highly recommend this place! It is, so far, the best authentic Chinese food in Ventura. read more

I have never had egg flower soup as good as Mandarin Bistros. I only had a cup and it left me wanting a gallon more. The eggs were fluffy, the consistency was divine and the mushrooms were a perfect touch. I'll be going back for just the soup alone. The pockets are so tasty and very filling!
