As you can see by my previous review, it's been a while since I've been here. Local posts have been very positive so thought we'd stop in. My go-to has always been the salad with seared scalping a raspberry dressing. No longer on the menu. However, we're always looking for different takes on a vegetarian burger, including Impossible and Beyond. We both were in the mood for a burger and they have the Impossible burger on the menu so we were in luck, or were we? Backup to the arrival. The main bar area was very busy and unfortunately no seats available. So, we were seated in the back which is a very nice and more formal and original part of the house. Totally empty we were seated in front of a fake (non-heat producing) fire, decent ambiance, but it was cold and silent in there. We don't mind the silent part but the temperature was not good. It took a long time before someone came back with menus and a greeting, but we knew what we wanted to order. Two Impossible burgers please. No such luck. "We don't have them anymore", we were told. "Revamping the menu. Don't worry, there will be plenty of vegetarian choices", we were told. How about tonight? We needed to take some time with the menu and there were very limited choices. I decided on the special, asparagus risotto with grilled salmon. My wife didn't really want anything on the menu but settled on the veggie flatbread. The risotto was quite good. The salmon was slightly overcooked but still very good. The three 1/4 stalks of asparagus were good, too, but they could've been a bit more generous with the veggie. The flatbread was a big disappointment. The menu says it is topped with artichokes, spinach, onions, red peppers and mushrooms. We nixed the mushrooms. You can see in the picture that there were no artichokes and no red peppers. There were a ton of tomatoes (not listed) and black olives, which would've been ok had it been for me, but my wife doesn't eat black olives. There were only 4 pieces of spinach. So, after removing them, there really wasn't much left to eat. She wasn't happy. I guess we should've done what the gentleman in the hidden dining room next to where we were seated did, order Chinese food to be delivered! read more

Went there this past Saturday, May 03. Seems like there was a lot of people. There was a big table of diners and their dinners looked good, but we'd already eaten. We came for the karaoke. The drinks were good and the bartender was friendly and attentive. The karaoke host ruined it for us. He was making a lot of songs into duets. We wanted to hear people sing. They use a website to request a song. My date and I had put a few in, but the host kept playing songs in between everyone else singing so we got called up only once. There wasn't a ton of singers, but half the night was just taken up by filler. Other places have food and good drinks, and karaoke that features the singers, not the host. read more

To be honest my husband and I almost left after walking in because the restaurant kind of needs a lot of work in terms of appearance. It's especially deceiving from the outside. I did like that they offered outdoor seating. We decided to stay, and were so glad we did. The food was excellent. My husband especially loved the Philly cheesesteak. It is very hard to find a good one in Connecticut but this one was excellent! The flavor, the bread and the portion all a thumbs up for sure. I got the chicken caprese, which was also good. Chili was a clump of ground beef...seasoned with sweet and a spicy odd taste and not enjoyable at all. Wings were dry. Dry rub also had an odd sweet taste. My mother ordered a steak and blue salad, which is described as having potato croutons. What was served was literal potato wedges on a salad. Been living in Cheshire all of my life and the Vic House was a staple. In the past 10 years the quality has gone way down. read more

Haven't been here in a long time, I always forget about it and I don't know why. It's a beautiful Victorian has a small bar room and a few dining rooms. The service was outstanding, the menu is huge, almost too much because it was hard to decide what to get. There was 3 of us, one had the Philly flatbread which was the perfect portion for an app to share or a meal for one. Another friend had the sliders and fries, great portion size and cooked perfectly I had the Buffalo Mac which was enough for me to eat about 3 meals! not complaining it was so good and currently reheating some for breakfast! This was one of the strangest restaurant experiences. A friend and I decided to try the Vic house, she is new to area, I have been living with my husband in town since 1994, but have not been to this restaurant for at least 10 years. Yes, the reviews are horrible, but we thought maybe it changed. We had reservations for dinner for the dining room which was closed with no heat . We waited for a hostess at least 20 mins, so I decided to go into the bar to see if we were in the wrong place. She said they would need to put heat on; it was maybe 50 degrees in the dining room, remember we are in Nov.at 5:25pm . We decided to sit in the tavern! Big mistake. We should have left, but we were going to a play nearby and it was Friday evening. There were young children in the bar who kept leaving to an outside deck in the dark with no coats and it was freezing out, 32 degrees. Bizarre. They were running everywhere in the restaurant and extremely noisy. The food was mediocre. The atmosphere was horrible. We will not return . The menu was limited. We are not complainers and understand we all should try to be flexible, but this was unacceptable. We should have trusted the reviews. There are many more great restaurants in Cheshire and surrounding towns. How do they stay in business, again we are not complainers, but I thought I would offer our opinion for those taking a chance like we did. read more

The place had a funny smell when we walked through the front door. My husband and I sat at the bar. The bar felt like it hadn't been cleaned in a while. Grime and crumbs around what looked like espresso machines. Bartender was not good at making a manhatten, it was not drinkable. We were handed a menu that needed to be cleaned with dish soap. Give this place a chance. It's a neighborhood restaurant with tasty martinis (I ordered the pumpkin pie martini) and food that isn't as overpriced as other restaurants. The Victorian house is more of a neighborhood restaurant that has a full bar and a quaint setting. True too its name, the decor will remind you of a time past and best not forgotten. If you're tired of the slick soullessness of chain restaurants, try coming here for a quiet dining experience. There are multiple dining rooms, one where you walk in from the back entrance and several other rooms leading down the hallway. We chose to die in a room down the hallway away from the traffic. It was delightfully quiet and I found the experience to be restorative. Overall, the Victorian House encompasses the value of a neighborhood meal with an intimate feel. If you're in the area, drop in for a seasonal drink and a sandwich special. read more

Upon entering we notice the bar area was busy but the dining room had just one other couple. Now we know why. I first ordered the spare rib dinner. Our sever came back and said they didn't have spare ribs tonight. We both ordered the chicken Marcella. I asked what it came with. Choices were fries, salad, or soup. No pasta, no vegetable,or mashed potato. Who ever heard of chicken marcella pairing with soup or fries? No bread, or water offered while waiting for the meal.This had to be one of the worst meals we ever had. It had such a weird favor to it. Our server finally came by when the meal was done not that we could finish it. She asked how was everything? I said one of worst meals I ever had. She said sorry to hear that. So glad we came here! First off, you enter through the bar and find hostess (or someone from waitstaff) and then wait to be seated. It can be a little tight in terms of waiting room if you have a few people in your party but, we were seated within 5 minutes or so. The waitress mentioned a few times (while serving our table) that it was busy, but there were only a few tables filled, I think they need to hire more staff! The appetizers, we ordered fried calamari, French onion soup and honey bbq wings (requested they cook them well). AMAZING!! The fried calamari had some peppers included and it was so yummy! Cooked to perfection, not at all rubbery, and crunchy. The French onion soup was good with perfect amount of cheese, chunks of bread, and onions. The wings were so tasty and cooked just how we like them. Our dinners were a NY strip au poivre, a huge plate of Vic house Mac & cheese, and a kids meal (grilled cheese w fries and an ice cream for dessert). Steak was ordered medium rare and came out cooked just right. The Mac & cheese was phenomenal with 4 different cheeses and breadcrumbs. Me and my boyfriend shared our dishes and we were completely satisfied. My son ate his whole meal but that's no surprise, it's hard to mess up a grilled cheese. Oh! Almost forgot to mention my sangria! I can't remember exactly what it was called on the menu but it was white with blueberries and pears. And it was SO good! They gave me a huge glass of it too, cheers! Our server was pleasant and attentive. Our table was in a small room where we were the only diners. No worries about social distancing there. The pricing was reasonable although $17 for a plate of Mac & cheese is a bit much. My boyfriend won't stop talking about this dinner! He wants to go back ASAP. So do I! read more

Excellent food! The daily specials never disappoint. Great service, at reasonable prices. And the crowd is always fun.

I ordered the baked fish. The entire meal was in a cast iron skillet. Mashed potatoes and vegetables. Which is weird cause they all have different cook times. However, everything was mush. You couldn't tell what you were eating. It was kinda like baby food. Didn't make sense. My kid got the chicken tenders and fries. Which were decent. But they were from a bag in the freezer. So that makes sense. % won't waste my money again. read more

Look at been a customer the Victorian House for over 35 years. I've never seen any problems ever with the food or the drinks. I notice a lot of non-positive reviews on this site. and I just don't see any of those issues ever. And I truly think the staff tries so hard to keep every customer happy. And the food is very good, I saw beautiful big stuffed shrimp dinner come out last time I was there, I'm always seeing the chef working as hard as he can work for his customers. Eight of us went to dinner on a Thursday evening. We reserved a table in the bar area but were seated elsewhere, which was fine because it was private and quite festive. My food was cold but I didn't say anything and wouldn't have left a negative review based on that. I worked in the industry as a server and bartender for over 20 years so I know things can happen. However, I am leaving a review due to the fact that AFTER I signed the credit card authorization and drew a line through the tip line, since I left more than a 20% tip in cash, that EXACTLY 20% was added to my total and taken from my bank account. Pretty sure that's theft. I have never seen such a thing in all my years of serving. I called the restaurant the next day and the lovely woman I spoke with was appalled. She took my name and number and said a manager would call me. No call. The money was returned, but how many other people could this have happened to but they never even noticed??? A phone call from management would have been appropriate and just plain good business. Shame on them. You've been warned. read more

We dined at the Victorian House restaurant on a Sunday evening. There was only one waitress running around frantically. She was doing tge best she could. I ordered the lobster grilled cheese. The menu describes a grilled cheese with several different Cheeses. In reality, it was a slice of American cheese with some lobster on barely lasted bread. It also come with hand cut house made fries which were clearly crinkle cut frozen French fries. 2 members got Flatbreads which were akin to bobali pizza crusts with some toppings. I have gone to the Vic house quite a few times for happy hour. I would definitely recommend to either go by yourself or with a group of people. Everyone is very friendly I love going here the food is very good and the happy hour is awesome. read more

Arrived on January 6, 2024 to celebrate my grandson's first birthday. Noticed that the paint on the exterior was peeling. Entered to be seated anywhere because the dining room was empty but the bar was full. Reminded me of a sports bar not the old quaint Victorian expected per the website. We were presented with a limited paper menu. No pizza. No fruit for the baby. Due to the limited menu I ordered a medium hamburger with no cheese. After some delay due to having to remove cheese from burger I got a well done crispy burger. My daughter in law ordered fish-no fish, then ordered turkey-no turkey, settled on ham. The waitress was more attentive to the people at the bar than serving our table. Obviously, will never go back! read more

First off, I will start out with I've always want to try this place because it looks like a quaint cute little house and place to eat. First thing we hear is its our waitresses first day, and I can't blame her but someone should have trained her on the menu. Every question we asked her if she had to go back inside and ask someone the answer. After eating our appetizer I was informed I was supposed to get a super salad with my dinner. And at the same time my friend was told one of the options he ordered her dinner was not available anymore. So I decided on the mac and cheese with toasted breadcrumbs. My Mac and Cheese came out as just a bowl of watery mac and cheese no bread crumbs, no toasting. I was then told they were out of breadcrumbs. And lastly, as we were sitting outside on this beautiful afternoon on the deck the speakers behind our head start blaring a heavy rock song. So needless to say, we will not be going back. Truly saddens me to ever write a negative review.. I only do so because many people, myself included will give certain restaurants a pass because of tradition.. The vic house is a Cheshire landmark.. Although the food was never stellar, The atmosphere and a feeling of inclusion always made the overall dining experience very positive. There have been several "last chance" experiences over the past few years, but unfortunately, I believe that the bad now greatly outweighs the good.. I had the mussel spicy Portuguese special, it was awesome. The R. I. Clam chowder was great (never had that before I think I prefer it over the New England clam chowder). They have great happy hour menu and prices from 4pm to 7pm. I love the quaintness of the house looking restaurant, we wondered who lived there at onetime. They have an outdoor deck, which will be nice for the summertime. We will be back. read more

We came as a pretty large party on a Tuesday afternoon in October. Everyone kept calling it the "Vic house" and I'm not from the area so I had no idea what they were talking about. The decor is tacky and it looks like an old Victorian house which is cool if you're into that kind of thing. You walk into a bar area and it's almost impossible to find a hostess to seat you. It felt like we were all a bunch of sardines waiting for someone to open the little metal tin that we were all standing in. The vibe was incredibly awkward. The food was just alright. I got the tacos so I'm thinking that may be it, because I picture this place to have more English or American fare compared to a Mexican/Tex Mex feel to it. There's just somethings that should be left to the professionals and tacos are one of those things. If anyone asked me where to eat in the area this wouldn't be my first suggestion or my second. This place was awful. Just atrocious. The waitress was dismissive, uninterested, and inattentive. The food was poor quality. The list of food they were out of was a mile long. Microwaved nachos, oily pasta with overcooked meat, and a sandwich held together by grease with a side of cold fry crumbs. Just absolute garbage. The decor is putrid, but that is overlooked with good food. This experience was like eating at a terrible diner located in a crazy shut-ins bathroom. Arriving a little before 6:00 on a Saturday night, the hostess seated us in the dining room very quickly. Then we waited... long enough to wonder if we'd been forgotten. The waitress finally arrived with menus and departed immediately. Another 10-15 minutes went by before she came back and asked if we were ready to order. One of our party has severe Celiac, and asked what the gluten free options were. The waitress said "Oh, we don't have any tonight." (Like, no big deal.) When we said maybe we'd better find another restaurant, she said "Just get a salad!" How is the chicken prepared? It's got seasoning on it. Can you leave it off? No, it just comes like that. Then we'll have to leave. There's nothing I can eat here. Her response? "Well, I can't tell the kitchen what to do." The waitress's attitude was rather dismissive, which wouldn't be desirable anyway. But someone in food service MUST understand the importance of gluten-free menu offerings for customers. It's not a "so what?" issue -- it can be a potentially life-threatening issue. We won't be back to the Vic House again if their wait staff takes such a casual attitude toward food allergies. read more

We came for a family dinner. We ordered the Italian Smorgasbord and they were out. We ordered apple juice for the kids and they were out. We ordered chicken salad and they were out of crasins.we ordered coffee with cream and they were out of cream. Coffee was cold and you could see the bottom of the cup. Asian salad had MAYBE 1.5 ounces of chicken although the salad was great. The nachos at $9.00 there was hardly any cheese on the nachos. We wanted to send them back for more cheese but the server never came and checked on us. The Ruben spring rolls were outstanding. It took a long time to get our entrees. I had to get up from the table to ask for drinks and to have our plates cleared. Service was very slow. A gratuity was added to the bill. Because we were a party of six. I came here one evening to enjoy a drink and a few appetizers at the bar, the food was amazing but what appalled me the most was a big guy barely able to stay awake, and nodding off in mid conversations with people. He ended up spilling his drink all over the bar...I was told this was the owner of the restaurant. How can you represent your business like that? It surprised me to see this because most restaurants I've been to the owners are very interactive and involved with their businesses. A nice casual place just off the main drag of Cheshire. This establishment has been in the area for a long time. I've been here mainly for lunch. But have gone for dinner on occasion. The food is good. I view it more of a place to get a sandwich, wrap or a burger. I really haven't tried their dinners. Apps are good from what I've ordered. It's a nice casual establishment. The service is usually good. I've had just about every wrap on the menu and they're tasty. The sweet potato fries are really good. The sandwiches I've tried are good as well. They have a nice area to sit outside when the weather is good. They've kept a nice balance with the look of a house from the road, but ample seating inside; along with a bar. read more

First time at this well established restaurant. Beautifully decorated , warm and cozy place to dine over the holiday season. Service was A1 with knowledgeable waitstaff that were very attentive. We chose to sit in bar/lounge area with a gas fireplace burning brightly. Large choice of apps along with vast array of entree and specials. All meals coming out of the kitchen were plentiful and nicely presented. Started of with homemade cheddar broccoli soup which was awesome and a salad. Both are included entree options which we love. Our meal choices were the 12 Oz prime rib special and braised boneless ribs. Both served with potatoes and fresh veggies. Both meats were done to perfection. Veggies were cooked well and tasty.. fresh and not bogged down in water or butter. Dessert was amazing! Homemade apple crisp with vanilla ice cream and whipped cream. Felt like the price and value could not be beat here. Highly recommend this restaurant and is inclusive for all types of parties including family and children. Casual but can be more formal in well appointed dining rooms if you wanted. read more
