We were done shopping, or having lunch in Beaverton, heading to our car, and I spotted this store, I thought were selling fine jewelry, but it says Fine Chocolate, a brand name that I've not heard of in all of my life! The room is a showroom. It is a place, security guard should be standing guard at the door, because it is 'luxury'. If it wasn't for my love for chocolate, I would have gotten in the car, where hubby was waiting for me. I motioned him: to come inside. I wanted to taste what a 'fine, luxury chocolate' tasted like, so we bought several types of $2.50 each chocolate. (They did have several tiny chocolates for tasting, but it's a mystery, just pick the color, any color and taste it. (Yes, she named each flavor, but many of us would like to see what's inside the wrapper). I've traveled many countries in Europe, so I am familiar with their chocolate! I have not found one, that I didn't like. So, we bought 5 of $2.50 and was charged for 7. The wrapped chocolate doesn't taste as good as they look! The foil sealed with a sticker of their logo. That's extra special, but it all came from the $2.50. The value of the chocolate, is probably worth 50 cents to make, the rest ends up in the trash! The foil and the sticker & the fancy bag. (That's fine, buy them for gifts, but I guarantee you, they are not my type). I love chocolate to melt in your mouth, not stick between your teeth, and the fruit were sour! these chocolates were gross. Very sweet, the fillings were rock solid and stuck in my teeth. The orange ones tasted like orange water or something, definitely not the fresh orange zest/ marmalade like i was expecting. I rarely leave reviews this negative but i actually spit these out. Got a box of baklava here for $35. The assortment in the box was plentiful and enough for sharing. It'd make a great gift. Staff was really friendly and let us sample some chocolates even though we only came for the baklava. The chocolate I did try was pretty good and comparable to most specialty chocolate shops. Ordered multiple boxes for holiday gifts, and it was returned to sender because USPS says it had an insufficient address. The address on my confirmation order email was correct, and I've received deliveries from Verdun Fine Chocolate before. And so it leads me to believe they did not fill out my address in its entirety when they mailed it. What earns them a 1 star though instead of 2 or 3 stars is their nonexistent customer service. I've emailed them twice and called once to get information about my missing order and in all three instances, they never replied/ answered. read more

I was skeptical about this place at first...it didn't match my expectations around those delicate fine chocolates with the thin crisp shells I usually love. But hell, it's chocolate for godsake! So snap out of it already, I said to myself. And doesn't even See's have it's own kind of deliciousness that puts those epicure chocolates to shame? I have no idea why I was getting my snob on. Jump to me inside the shop admiring all those pretty wrappers. Anyone who has ever unwrapped a foiled chocolate can certainly appreciate the joy here. It's like I'm pea-sized and have stumbled into someone's jewel box. Now the deets - First, they generously offer samples. And let's be clear, this is just a different kind of chocolate house. The chocolates are made in Lebanon. I got a handful of dark and milk with various fillings. By weight, it's more chocolate than you'll get in other fancy chocolate houses. No delicate shells here, and some of the pieces are good little chunks for the same individual price as the fancy shmancies. The dark chocolate didn't really send me. But the milk chocolate did! Rich and creamy! MANY of the fillings here are of a hazelnut-based variety called Gianduja, according to the young woman at the counter. I'm not a fan of hazelnuts, but if you are, this could be your paradise. I liked the solid milk chocolates and the pistachio and marmalade centers. But taking my little bag of goodies back to the hotel, here's what finally got me - those sweet colorful foil wrappers! My own petite jewel box. So, I fell in love and I'm going back for more. With all food, the presentation is key to the ultimate enjoyment, and in this way, and perhaps unexpectedly, Verdun fully delivers. The service was great, friendly, generous too! read more

Great chocolates with a lot of unique types I've never had before. They have classic solid milk and dark chocolate pieces, but also a large variety of gianduja filled milk and dark chocolate along with some other unique creations. My favorite piece was the milk chocolate with caramel and biscuit. It was like a fancy Twix. Only downside is they're expensive ($30-75 for a box), but that's to be expected given their location in the Pearl. read more

Verdun is a beautiful store -- like a jewelry store, except with little foil-wrapped bits of chocolate. They have a friendly staff and a fabulous decor. And the chocolate is, um, meh. Their motto appears to be that chocolates need not be complicated. Ok, I can accept that. But does it have to be this boring? A vast majority of their selection consists the same basic chocolates made of the same basic ingredients (milk or dark chocolate, gianduja, some kind of nut, caramel, and/or espresso) molded into a variety of shapes like hearts, lips, bells, etc. Not really enough to get me excited. It's good stuff, don't get me wrong. They are chocolates, after all; they taste good. They make great gifts for coworkers who think good chocolate begins and ends with See's. But without a little more adventure and variety, it's not really the kind of place I'm going to go back to again and again. read more

When I saw Verdun during my first afternoon in Portland, I thought I'd recreate my standard MO for wandering around Pike Place Market for a day, and snag some chocolates for later. It became a little awkward at first - the woman at the counter kept offering to give us samples - perhaps to encourage a large gift purchase? But I just wanted individually wrapped chocolates, and I was too full from lunch to eat the samples right away. So... do I just say, "Thanks for the samples" and walk out? I was tempted. But instead, I found a couple of individually wrapped morsels that looked good, and paid for them. Back again! When it comes to customer service, this place is the top of the top. When I visited two years ago I wasn't sure if the service was a constant thing, but after revisiting again, I can see that it wasn't a fluke! I was warmly greeted and the counter associate helped me pick out a chocolate that suited my taste. I wasn't spending a lot of money but she treated me as if I was a millionaire and catered to my every need. This is what customer service should feel like. Excellent service! My friend and I wanted to buy the little purse shaped boxes of chocolate for our friends. Each box is $3.50 and holds one medium sized and one small piece of chocolate. We purchased 4 boxes for our friends and an assortment of chocolates for us. The store attendant was extremely patient and helpful with recommendations. The girl working when I went in today was very nice and helpful. I was in need of chocolate goodness ASAP and she helped me to make my selections. The salted chocolate caramel had a nice thick caramel inside, just how I like it, but something about the chocolate had a weird taste to me, somehow tasted cheap? I know this is crazy, I believe that their chocolate is good quality, perhaps somehow it was a little stale or something. I don't know, but I'd take a Fran's over this one. The other two chocolates I had were similar. One was dark chocolate with an almond cream inside, very very good. The other was with a pistachio cream, which was almost as good. If I am in the neighborhood again, walking by, I will likely pop in to experience the latter two chocolates. Otherwise I'll pick up a different salted caramel at Cacao instead. read more

Groupon brought me in and the chocolates made me a fan for life. Service was friendly and exceptional, from a young woman whose name I didn't get, unfortunately. She was as excited about chocolate as I am and was obviosuly a supporter of the product she was selling. I took her advice on her favorites and ventured off into uncharted territory with the sesame, cardamom, a caramel crunch that was so sinfully delicious... all of them, so good. The gift bag we left with our friends did not survive the night. They sent me a text with a photo of empty wrappers. For the quality, I think the prices are very reasnable. Not as high as many fine chocolate stores I've found. I will gladly pay full price on my next trip to Portland. I'd prefer it if I didn't have to wait that long, however. I can't tell the difference between chocolates, but Verdun has delightful chocolates and hot illy coffee when all the other stores in the city were closed during the snow storm. The staff member was friendly and explained their chocolate and how it's different than other chocolates. She also made delicious recommendations. The store was quiet, but then again there was a snow store. Other days when I walk by, I see several people sitting outside enjoying coffee of people perusing the chocolate cases.
