The Meadow is a small space, but packed with artisan salt - who knew there were so many varieties - bitters, a massive array of decadent chocolates from around the globe, and gorgeous flowers that greet you when you enter, and you can select stems to make your own bouquet. Smaller selection of pantry items, small bags of pasta with their name, and hot sauces. Also a few books books, focusing on salts, bitters and cocktails, of course! I've purchased some of the Maldonado finishing salt, and it absolutely makes a difference. Never use these salts as an ingredient, it's used to sprinkle on meats, veggies, potatoes, right before serving. Awesome on chocolate cookies. They even sell small containers for salt, known as salt cellars, so you can keep your favorite salt in your purse in case your restaurant meal is lacking that little something extra. They refill for life, for the tiny ones only. I enjoy checking out this store when I'm in the area or when looking for a gift for one of my foodie friends. I'd buy more, but the prices are very high, especially the pasta and chocolate. I can't rationalize $12-15 for a chocolate bar that I'll eat in one sitting. Maybe I'm the problem, maybe one bar is supposed to last for many servings!
This is one shop on NW 23rd St in Portland, OR with a creative flair like no other I've seen. The Meadow is like a treasure chest of sorts. Every corner of this tiny shop has chocolate bars from specific cacao-producing countries. But it's their salt that reminded me of my Mallorca trip in August '24 that makes Meadow more unique- on top of the bitters they sell for cocktails and flowers. The moment my daughter and I came here, we kinda looked at each other. How can you not smile and feel cozy and warm inside when you see their chocolates, their salts, the design- considering this shop's tiny size? For salt lovers, Meadow sources craft salts from Japan, Mexico, India, Iceland and other countries. As for chocolate, this isn't the place where you'll find truffles- but you can select from the many chocolate bars that could be ideal for making hot chocolate or maybe for making ganache. Meadow goes for that dried floral, whimsical style. Yet some of the fresh blooms I noticed in water, seemed to me like they were on the cusp of wilting. Are these for styling the shop ond/or for sale? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. Anyhow, my kid selected a few bite-sized, wrapped chocolates to have that night in her apartment which were creamy and tasty. Service was great and these folks have an offspring shop on Mulberry between Spring & Prince St's.
Not only is this cute confectioner collating and curating a considerable collection of chocolates cultivated from all corners of the globe, they're also seemingly informed and knowledgeable about each item stocking their shelves. Even from the brief interactions we had with the counter clerk (whom I suspect was also the owner), every question we asked was answered, accompanied by suggestions, the layout and organization of the store was explained to us, samples were offered (and enjoyed), and we ended up walking out with a variety of delectable things each tailored to the particular tastes of each member of our party! Additionally, you'll find an almost overwhelming selection of salts and spices, bitters and books, candies and candles, among other goodies tucked away in every corner. Even someone as sugar-averse as myself walked away with a high-cacao & red chili bar and some seasoning salts, but anyone with a sweet tooth (or not) owes it to themselves to pop into the Meadow and pick the sweetest-smelling (or tasting) treat tailored to their treat their taste buds!
This cute little shop, sales salt and hand made chocolate. Loved the vibe and cute lady working here. A bit pricy but very unique flavors of chocolates that you cant find anywhere else.
They have like a thousand different chocolates, ok that's maybe an exaggeration, but they probably realistically have over a hundred different kinds of chocolate to choose from. They are sourced globally and all looked quite enticing, some even have pretty wild flavors like spicy Sichuan flavor. We got some of my favorite Mexican stone ground chocolate and some local filbert (hazelnut's Oregon name) chocolate. They also have good selection of exotic salt and vinegar and other cool stuff. Great to see.
This is a specialty store for chocolate, salt, bitters, and other delicious things. We try to stop by here whenever we're in town. There are shelves of chocolate bars, organized based on dark chocolate, milk chocolate, local, snd which ones have e inclusions. I decided to try a couple new bars and grabbed a couple Venchi Baciodidama chocolates. They're these chocolates with a gluten free hazelnut wafer in the center and they're addictingly good. My partner picked up a few different bitters to try, and a friend with us grabbed a couple chocolate bars too. There are so many options here and everyone was incredibly helpful when we had questions.
The Meadow showcased a diverse range of products, including an entire wall dedicated to chocolates, salts sourced from various corners of the world, and an assortment of different products like flowers and enticing candies. Recommend checking this place out.
The store has got a cute dreamy vibe about it . The huge windows give you a good glimpse of the offerings and you feel drawn inside .They specialize in artisan salts , specialty chocolate bars, bitters and other gourmet items for the bar and kitchen ,Some selection of Oregon and European wines and vermouths ,a full service floristry and books on food and salts . These could make great gifts and/or when you want to treat yourself to the finer things. But the prices are a tad bit higher in my opinion. I have bought a few chocolates and bitters etc. from here but nothing has ever impressed me much . If I am buying $12 chocolate bar /$30 bitters ,I would really expect amazing taste or something unique but the items that I had purchased were alright and nothing that would blow your mind . Its just not good value in my humble opinion . The staff is friendly and sweet and always welcoming . Their flower selection is exquisite and makes the whole store smell fantastic.
Loved visiting this place and will have to go back! The wall of chocolate alone is reason enough to visit! The chocolate covers so many regions and all the possible options you could want in a chocolate bar. The also have a wide ranging salt and bitters collection to pick from. The cooking salt blocks are very reasonably priced and great selection.
I had visited before a few years ago, so I was pleased to be able to visit today! The clerk was amazing especially as it was pretty busy plus she was busy trying to clean up after a customer who had accidentally dropped an item. They have a great selection of chocolates plus lots of other condiments, but my reason for coming was the salt! I have a couple that I bought last time, and so I thought I'd try another along with a few chocolates. I chose a Halen Môn Gold Salt from Wales which has a light smoke flavor that will be perfect with the baguette I bought from one of the bakery's in the area. Be sure to stop by when you are in the area- and try some of the popcorn with truffle salt!!
This shop is a MUST for tasty treats! I was a bit overwhelmed by all of the options but the nicest associate name Charlotte helped answer all of our questions and gave us the BEST recommendations. The Chocolat Cafe-Tasse 's Blanc & Cafe is white chocolate and coffee bliss... and then for dark chocolate lovers, there is a Askinosie rasberry & milk chocolate bar that melts in your mouth good! Also, all of the individual chocolates at the register? Get them. They were so fun to try and every single one of them were delectable. And I didn't even get to all of the beautiful salt rocks throughout the store... Thanks again to Charlotte for being so sweet to us, out-of-towners - you helped make our first trip to Oregon [deliciously] memorable!
Great spot for chocolate lovers. They carry the LA based Compartes chocolate bars which I haven't been able to find anywhere else other than directly from the company's website. It is a smaller space so it can get crowded but otherwise great assortment of different chocolates to choose from!
You know when you go to a business, and it's just yours? Like, if someone was designing a gift shop with me very specifically in mind, they could do only little to improve on The Meadow. First, it is located on a particularly dreamy and perfect-for-strolling street. Pretty even from the outside, with a big window and old-fashioned gold lettering adorning the glass. The interior is small, but an appropriate size for what's on offer, and even features wooden shelving and a rolling ladder à la Beauty and The Beast (I know this was real thing before that, but it brings to mind the beloved cartoon, and that makes me very happy). Now, gift shops can veer toward cheesy, but a majority of The Meadow's offerings consist of two of my favorite things: chocolate and salt. How can you go wrong? The bulk of the salt is in the form of pink Himalayan blocks, serving dishes, and their ilk (even a mortar and pestle!!!!). I feel like these blocks have sort of seen their heyday at this point, but if The Meadow can still sell 'em then good on them. I already have a block, otherwise would have purchased one as I still think they are dang cool, and priced reasonably here. They also had a whole span of artisanal sea and flavored salts. Chocolate was mostly craft, with some candy bars and other treats snuck in. Additional offerings included MANY bitters, small gifts, cookbooks, etc. Prices are in line with anywhere else selling these products, and worth it for a superior find. Even if you don't buy anything, it is worth stopping by simply to revel in The Meadow's magnificence.

The flagship of 3 Portland shops (+1 in SOHO), carrying OVER 400 BARS in a LIBRARY OF CHOCOLATE organized by flavor profile. This small (but mighty) woman-owned business is celebrating 20 years with Kinsey at the forefront focused on their central values of connection & service. Beyond first impressions, they're also thoughtful to care for employees behind-the-scenes, providing paid vacation, 401K matching, health insurance, and other BIG COMPANY benefits. Commitment to quality is experienced in their beautiful chocolate - the eponymous (house) label made by local chocolatier RANGER, alongside a multitude of other local & global brands, pastas, and pantry goods. I came looking for something spicy, and the "FLEUR DE HELL" (play on words - see their "fleur de sel" SALT subscription online) DARK CHOCOLATE is everything - ghost pepper, red pepper flake, and sea salt that makes it savory, spicy, and sweet all at the same time. read more
Oh don't skip this shop. I know it's on a street of great bougie shops but this one is charm upon charm: it's like walking into a grown-up candy store and finding wrapped bonbons that you want to try -- chocolates that are milk and dark -- all kinds of extraordinary flavors wrapped like truffles. Cherry cordials, pear cordials, apple cordials in chocolates. Caramel chocolates, chocolate caramels. Thing is it's hard for not to love the store because it has three of my favorite things: 1. chocolate: shelves and shelves of unique artisan chocolates made with skill and care from all over the world. 2. And salt -- am a VERY big fan of picking up local salts whenever one is traveling -- including actual blocks and blocks of Himalayan salt stacked. Not imitation but the real stuff. They even have fresh popcorn for you to taste the truffle salt with. 3. Lastly they have fresh cut flowers. It's like a florist and you can create your own bouquets. Beautiful specimens with structure and freshness. I have to say they also have bottles and bottles of bitters -- crafted bitters. King Floyd chief among them. The staff person was super helpful. She was kind and educational about many things. read more

This is a well stocked chocolate and salt (yes, salt) store in a pricey neighborhood. The quirky library bookcases decor fits in with the neighborhood and is fun and visually appealing. The curated selection of craft chocolate bars is great. They carry local Portland makers, as well as others from makers around the world. This is good chocolate, but it's also the kind of chocolate where every bar is not for everybody. Craft chocolate brings out the unique tastes of each cocoa bean origin, and this is a good place to experience that and decide which origins (countries and plantations) you like. You may also find the same cocoa beans processed by different craft makers taste different, so this is a great place to learn which makers you prefer. The salt and salt blocks are an interesting companion to sell in the same location as chocolate. A little odd, but hey, if it works for them then good for them. You should visit this store if you live in Portland or are here to visit the town. It deserves your support, and you deserve good chocolate. Go here! Often. read more

A library of Chocolate!!! I've been here several times and staff is always helpful and knowledgeable on helping me find the right choco bar either for myself or as a gift. I have family members who love chocolate, but are very particular. I gave the employee a description of what my grandmother enjoys and she was able to suggest the right bar! When I brought it to my grandma she broke it up into pieces and shared with everyone. It may seem like just a chocolate bar but it's a very fond memory I have with my grandmother- sharing chocolate after dinner. read more

We had so much fun Peru zing this particular store. One wall is filled to the brim with chocolates. Like a library of chocolates. Another wall was filled with Himalayan salt and other savory cooking items. The thing we had never heard of was these giant blocks of Himalayan salt, which they had stacked up near the front door and in the windows. Some other people in the shop at the time raved about cooking on these blocks of salt. A small block of salt you could put a stick of non-salted butter on and it would salts the butter supposedly. They had samples of black truffle salt on popcorn at the register. So we had to get one of those. And a few fun little cookbooks Relating to cooking with these salt blocks. Definitely a shop for connoisseurs. read more

Perfect gift store for the chocolate lover in your life. So many high quality choices. I bought a few for my brother's birthday. He doesn't want to eat this one because "it is a work of art." read more

A sweet treat on NW 23rd for chocolate lovers The Meadow sells only the finest single origin chocolates in town and a vast collection of fine bitters for cocktails. They also sell wonderful artesianal Himalayan salt rocks for nutrition or home decor. Their staff is very knowledgable and helpful. I love buying the dark chocolate with red chili peppers sourced in Mexico, it is an amazing addition to my espresso. The retail store is museum for chocolate lovers with the variety of chocolates to discover. read more

Hit or miss. I've tried many of their bars and have found a few that I really love. The few that I haven't enjoyed were basic in flavor and composition. The shop keepers are always pleasant. They also have a section for bitters and unique salts. read more

I love this store, I had another great experience and fun interaction with the staff during my visit. I saw this bottle of pecan bitters in the window, which sparked a funny conversation/debate about Puh-KAHN vs. PEA-can as the two ladies working, showed me the bottle on the shelf. The staff was so helpful in finding me a chocolate bar with pecans to pair with the bitters, and we joked about my newly, sparked, pecan theme for my friend's birthday gift. So many great items in this store, and excellent costumer service. read more

If I'm down, I go to The Meadow. If I'm happy, I go to The Meadow. Every day is a good day to go here!! I love perusing the shelves for my favorites (Cafe Tasse Earl Gray) and picking up new bars to try or to gift. My co-workers are also pleased as I often share my findings! There are plenty of local bars and non local options and I enjoy picking an assortment of both. The only downside is that I have to limit myself so I can eat them all before my next venture in! I'm up to the task though! read more

The most amazing shop I've ever seen. One entire wall, from floor to ceiling, is filled with colorful, beautifully wrapped chocolate bars. I've never seen so many luxurious chocolate bars in one place, all different sizes and colors, from all over the world. amazing amazing! The store itself has large windows and from the outside is warm and very inviting. the colors of the items are intriguing, which is what made my friend and I stop in our tracks to walk in. They also sell various other cool items, such as huge salt blocks, spirits, flowers, etc. (I honestly am not really sure what else they sell, i was so mesmerized by the chocolates) This is such a cute, cozy, and quaint street lined with little shops and boutiques!! A definitely must stop for Portland!!! (the alphabet district) read more
