Chocolate tasting: classic dark, milk, white, piura, nord, Oregon sea salt
    Dana B.

My husband and I discovered Ranger Chocolate on our recent trip to Cannon Beach. While staying at the Stephanie Inn, we did a chocolate tasting and were able to try 6 of their chocolates: Classic Dar, Milk, White, Piura, Nord, and Oregon Sea Salt. Each of them was deliciously smooth and unique. Of the ones we tried I absolutely loved the Milk chocolate and the White chocolate was simply divine!! The chef who led our tasting said we must try the Thai chocolate which he didn't have available, so I'm looking forward to visiting their location in person and discovering more favorites!

We went to Ranger Chocolate on a friend's recommendation during our last trip to Portland. While Ranger Chocolate was on the opposite side of the river from where we usually stay, it was fun to explore a new neighborhood. Upon entering the shop, we were greeted with the aroma of fresh chocolate. The storefront was small, but there was cafe seating by the front window as well as a warehouse in the back. The baristas/cashiers were very friendly and knowledgeable about the various bars and their origins - we sampled a few single-origin bars and ended up purchasing a variety to take home. We also ordered their famous Oregon Hot Chocolate to enjoy in the cafe. The hot chocolate was light, frothy, and subtly flavored with hazelnut and fir. I'd recommend Ranger Chocolate for some wonderful take-home gifts when you're visiting Portland!

Came on a Wednesday morning, and was greeted by an extremely friendly employee offering samples of all the chocolates. Ranger is located in an industrial park in Portland, but they make the space relaxed. Super delicious chocolate smells waft the whole building. Anyways, we got two chocolate bars and the best chocolate chip cookie I have ever had. The cookie chocolate is decadent and rich, and has a sea salt topping that cuts into the sweetness and prevents it from being too sweet. The passion fruit chocolate is also unique, not tasting like a dark chocolate bar I have ever had. Pricey, but well worth the cost. Overall highly recommend stopping by here for a treat!

The moment you walk in you smell the chocolate! It's fun to walk into a real chocolate shop and smell the chocolate. I enjoyed the atmosphere and sitting with my micro mocha (8oz mocha) and the smell of coffee and chocolate. I did see drinking chocolates listed in their menu and will have to go back to try those. They have their chocolate bars on sale as well as other chocolate goodies like granola and s'more kits. The girl behind the counter was very friendly and easy to chat with about the chocolates they sell.

Walked over from Knot Springs (day spa highly recommended) and this place is super chill. Well built industrial, a small yet good selection of snacks, including granola, chocolate covered ginger, ginger bars, and treats. Check out the s'mores mocha. Also, their chai is nice and spicy.

Being new to Portland, Ranger was on my list of places to try since moving to Portland a couple of months ago. My partner and our friends are chocolate fiends too. So off we went. When we arrived, I was one happy foodie. Not only do they do chocolate but also roast coffee. Two of my favorite things. We were greeted by a display of chocolate covered things. At the counter, my wife and I experienced moderate decision paralysis. Everything looked awesome. Here's what we settled on. Drinking chocolate which came with cinnamon short bread and whipped cream. 10/10 Pear Ginger hand pie. 9/10 Marshmallow 8/10 Chocolate square with dried fruit on top. 10/10 The staff were extremely friendly. It looked cool in there, rustic. The only issues was all "high top" seating. That includes all the tables and chairs. So, it was a bit difficult with some of my physical limits, but I managed.

Incredibly smooth chocolate! We stopped by to try a couple of bars. The Thai chocolate bar was very good. The rice and coconut milk flavor worked so well together with the chocolate. I also really really enjoyed the classic dark bar. So smooth! Not to mention their packaging is super nice. Love the style. The guy working was very nice and helpful when we were debating which bars to try. It looks like they also had coffee and various other menu items if you wanted to stay and hangout. Cool spot!

So glad I found this place, their chocolate is amazing! Mocha was nicely dark and rich with strong coffee and chocolate flavor. Don't pass up on their pastries either! The campfire biscuit was so buttery, with a great crunch on the outside. The chocolate chip & strawberry scone was also perfect - lots of high quality chocolate scattered throughout, not too sweet and pretty moist for a scone. The place has a warm industrial chic vibe with the open chocolate factory in the back and service / wares in the front, with ample seating and friendly baristas.

A cute coffee/chocolate shop in the city. The latte and scone are good, but nothing outstanding. Stop by and try when you are in the area, but this is not a must stop in Portland.

Absolutely amazing drinks and service. The cafe is so cute. Definitely will visit again.

Inside is bright, with sherbet colored green walls, lots of shelves and tables stocked with beautifully wrapped candy, gift assortments, boxes of chocolates, novelty candy, gummies, lollipop, and even candy from around the world, including a large variety of Asian candies. For those wanting just an individual piece of chocolate or wanting to create a custom purchase, the counter holds individual pieces of a variety of chocolates. They have all the usual suspects - truffles, salted chocolate caramels, chocolate with nuts, cream filled and more. It was October, so there was a section dedicated to fall colors and Halloween, with candy coming in black cat boxes, candy that resembles an eyeball, witch, ghost, and of course, candy corn. Never understood the appeal of candy corn, you either love it or avoid it, but it's definitely representative of the season. Candy here is priced high, so it's more like a treat or gift, not an everyday purchase. Personally, I think they would be more profitable if they had a broader price range so it could be the candy store you always purchase something from while at the mall.

Thing is it's hard for not to love the store because it has three of my favorite things: 1. chocolate: shelves and shelves of unique artisan chocolates made with skill and care from all over the world. 2. And salt -- am a VERY big fan of picking up local salts whenever one is traveling -- including actual blocks and blocks of Himalayan salt stacked. Not imitation but the real stuff. They even have fresh popcorn for you to taste the truffle salt with. 3. Lastly they have fresh cut flowers. It's like a florist and you can create your own bouquets. Beautiful specimens with structure and freshness. I have to say they also have bottles and bottles of bitters -- crafted bitters. King Floyd chief among them. The staff person was super helpful. I've purchased some of the Maldonado finishing salt, and it absolutely makes a difference. Never use these salts as an ingredient, it's used to sprinkle on meats, veggies, potatoes, right before serving. Awesome on chocolate cookies. They even sell small containers for salt, known as salt cellars, so you can keep your favorite salt in your purse in case your restaurant meal is lacking that little something extra. They refill for life, for the tiny ones only. I enjoy checking out this store when I'm in the area or when looking for a gift for one of my foodie friends. I'd buy more, but the prices are very high, especially the pasta and chocolate. I can't rationalize $12-15 for a chocolate bar that I'll eat in one sitting. Maybe I'm the problem, maybe one bar is supposed to last for many servings!
