The last couple of times I was in Portland I stayed at the Heathman, and Azar is attached in one corner. Usually I just have the hotel coffee, but I wanted a Turkish coffee and a little sweet treat in the afternoon. Coffee was good. It takes a little while to brew, but that is Turkish coffee. Take your time to make and drink. There are tons of specialty chocolates and sweets, so you can most likely find something you like, though they do tend to be on the pricy side, which is par for the course with specialty chocolates. read more

Omg, yay, I found it-- the first place I ever tried sipping chocolate! This shop holds a special place in my heart as the first shop I ever heard of that served European style sipping chocolate. My friend had read about the shop opening in a local magazine, and she brought me here during our road trip to Oregon and Washington. I asked the owner, "How long have you been here for?" She said, "I've had this shop for about seven years." Yup. Exactly. I've been looking for this place all month. As soon as I set foot inside the door-- maybe even a few steps before that-- I knew. This is the place. The shop is tucked into the front corner of a fancy hotel, but don't be intimidated-- the chocolates start at around $1.50 each. Although most of the chocolate bars have changed, the energy and ambiance was still the same. Compared to all of the other chocolate shops I've visited in Portland, this one has the best selection of chocolate. It's almost comparable to Cafe Xocolatl in Sacramento. I've never seen so much Dubai chocolate anywhere. They must have had 20 different kinds-- everything from $1.50 dark chocolate pistachio truffles to $30 imported gold-infused bars. The sipping chocolate was on the cheaper side at $3 for a small, which is 4 ounces. I ordered a chocolate espresso drink which had two shots of sipping chocolate, two shots of espresso, and whipped cream (they were out of the fresh cream) for $7. When I was asked if I needed sweetener, I said no. This turned out to be the incorrect answer. The flavor was amazing, but it was unbearably bitter. I ended up stirring in some Raspberry chocolate I had purchased from the shop I visited right before this. This shop is perfect for anyone who is looking to experience sipping chocolate for the first time without a crazy price tag, or for anyone who happens to be searching for a wide variety of pistachio flavored dark chocolate. read more

While visiting Portland and hanging out with my friend, we went in search for the elusive Dubai Chocolate. She found out that Azars Indulgences in downtown Portland had some. We found our way to their cozy shop and met the wonderful owner (we think) Christine who explained the different types of Dubai Chocolates they carried. We decided to splurge and chose their house brand, made in Jordan. It is pricey but worth it. This small chocolatier shop sure packs a wallop! What a fabulous gem of a shop! We were so lucky to have found it! I was in the market for some gourmet Portland-made dark chocolate, as a "thank you" gift for my neighbor who was tending to my plants while I was visiting my kid. My daughter googled chocolate shops when we were downtown, and Mr. Google sent us to Azar. SUCH a good call! The woman and man who work here were incredibly friendly and also knowledgeable about all things chocolate. My kid and I were blown away by how nice these folks were. And wow, what a selection of gourmet chocolates! They had a huge variety of individually-wrapped Turkish delight candies that, had I known which flavors my parents liked, I'd have gotten a ton (there were so many flavors). For my neighbor's gift, the lady recommended a particular box of Portland-made dark chocolate covered caramels that were infused with Portland-harvested honey. A double Portland whammy! And how nice that she also wrapped it and put a "thank you" sticker on it, too. (My neighbor was thrilled to pieces with this Portland-y gourmet gift!). At the cash there were some beautifully packaged chocolates that were 50% off. I also purchased a box of a variety of chocolates from different areas in France. The lady said that the soils were different in each area, so the cocoa produced tastes different from each area. Made sense. I bought chocolate for my SO through online. The owner was very nice and diligent. I had called her prior to putting my online order, and she answered all my questions thoroughly. Even though my SO picked up a day late, she was very accommodating. I had requested a note to be attached to his chocolate, and a very nice handmade card was given with the chocolate! (Honestly, I was just expecting a sticky note.) My partner is still going through the chocolate (got him the dark chocolate assortment box), and he told me his favorite was the cherry-flavored dark chocolate and there was no chocolate that he did not like! Oh my Goodness. This spot is a hidden gem . I was just walking around this neighborhood and all of a sudden I saw a picture of a Turkish coffee pot on their window. I stopped and looked at the windows more and I decided to go in to see what's going on inside . As soon as I walked in , as a person born and raised in Middle East I found myself in heaven . They have so many different varieties of hand made chocolates . The lady and her friend that are running the business and ( the lady is the owner) were just absolutely amazing . The lady ( Christine ) jumped right in to show off her talents in customer service with offering me a cute piece of chocolate . I asked if I can take some pictures and she said yes . I took some pictures and I couldn't resist. I ordered a Turkish coffee and I picked one of their chocolates. The price ? Unbelievable. So cheap . And of course I am living in San Francisco. Compare to SF , the price everything in Portland is cheap . I didn't see any place to sit , I asked if there is anywhere nearby that I can sit and they directed me to a library behind their shop . This is a very small shop with a lovely range of chocolates, coffee and tea. We got some salted honey caramels that were divine and the clerk told us we were welcome to enjoy them in the library of the Heathman Hotel, which it is connected to. What?! This place is gorgeous.
