I was randomly driving around the Pearl District and stumbled upon Roste Chocolate House (7/9/26). I managed to find a parking spot around the corner by a couture shop. Limited outdoor sidewalk seating, but inside, there's a lot of seating at a few tables and along a lengthy banquette. Eye catching interior - gawked at the production equipment, the pastry case, the display shelving, and merch galore. Most notable once I entered, I was hit with the intense scent of chocolate. The staff person greeted me warmly and was patient while I perused the menu. I chose to sip onsite a 9oz drinking chocolate which was served with whipped cream and seltzer water on a tray. Definitely not something to guzzle, but to savor slowly and pick up on the complex flavor and luscious texture. A wonderful find! read more

Stumbled upon this gem! Walked into this cozy coffee roaster/chocolatier and the smells of happiness smacked me in the face! Roasting coffee, espresso brewing - and chocolate simmering and spinning about like a scene straight out of Willy Wonka. One tear of happiness came out while I took my first bite of chocolate Bakalava. Just go. Set your maps and enjoy a slice of heaven. read more

We visited Roste in the afternoon. We were the only ones in the shop and the workers didn't even look at us when we came in. We weren't acknowledged for a few minutes. The workers just kept talking to themselves. They seemed completely uninterested and annoyed we were there. We got the drinking chocolate and the baklava. The baklava was amazing. Would definitely recommend. The drinking chocolate was not good at all. It tasted sour and bitter. Didn't taste like chocolate at all and was unpalatable. I have no idea how it has such good reviews from other people. We tried to like it but it was just not good at all. Unfortunately, not a great experience. read more

I was going to go to a cafe then I passed by this place. I had to try cause I love chocolate! I got the drinking chocolate and wow, it was rich! So delicious tho. The order also comes with a sparkling water which helps balance it out. It took me a while to finish the drink, but it worked out perfectly for me because I stayed in the cafe to work on a project. It's great that there is wifi available. It wasn't very crowded on a Sunday afternoon. There are plenty of space and seating available as well. read more

The female employee working the register was very rude and not friendly in the slightest. I very rarely leave no tip but it was so bad I did, and my friend and I even looked at each other like "is this really happening?"The male employee was friendly and I feel bad his income is likely affected by her poor customer service. The drinking chocolate was tasty and rich but I wouldn't go back due to the customer service. read more

We had a wonderful experience through Airbnb, where we tried ancient chocolate, learned about the history of chocolate, and made our own chocolate bars. The chocolate was incredible, and the educational portion was fascinating. Michael is clearly passionate and very knowledgeable. The shop itself is lovely, with a charming interior and a variety of innovative chocolate products. I especially recommend their drinking chocolate as it is delightfully rich without being overly sweet. Overall, a memorable and delicious experience! read more

Interesting little spot. Reminds me of a place on the coast down at Cannon Beach. We opted for a Mexican Mocha and a Mocha Freeze (I think it was called). Service was welcoming. We waited a few minutes for our drinks. This is a "fancy" chocolate spot, so prices are moderate. They do have pastries, an assortment of chocolate beverages as well as full espresso bar, and of course chocolate! The ambiance was really chill with music in the background. Simple but somewhat elegant decor. Very quiet. We did enjoy our drinks--although I definitely should have gotten a small instead of a large as the Mexican Mocha was very rich. read more

Life-changing flavor. Okay. I was looking for the first place I ever tried sipping chocolate, which I found a few shops later. This was not that shop, but this might be my new favorite shop. I ordered the Marzipan sipping chocolate latte from the Summer Special menu. It was one of the top three lattes I've ever had in my life. The way the sipping chocolate, espresso, and Marzipan complemented each other was so dreamy. I could have drank like 30 ounces. Too bad I only ordered 12. It was on the pricier side compared to the other sipping chocolate shop I visited. The sipping chocolate in particular was substantially more expensive. But this is one of those cases where you get what you pay for. It was so amazing. As to actual chocolate bars, there wasn't a great selection-- the other place had them beat. But the latte was so incredibly delicious, I would for sure come back for that alone. read more

I am obsessed with the chocolate ginger cookies! I highly recommend them. Very high quality chocolate and friendly employees!

Very food chocolate. Thick and full of flavor. Was a bit disappointed. I got there like 10 minutes before they closed and ordered but they said they'd be closing soon so it was only take out. That's not their fault but I was only ordering a cup, it's not like I'd be there 30 minutes or more. So I didn't get to really savor the moment of drinking chocolate which I don't have where I live. read more

I was downtown craving a sweet treat and I knew there was no better place to go than Roste. As soon as you walk in, the smell is overwhelmingly delicious. Choose from their pastries, drinks, or sample some chocolate about as straight as you can get it. I recommend dining in and leaving plenty of time to savor your chocolate rather than having to shove it down. This is best when savored! Alternately, consider booking a tasting class with chocolatier Michael. It's very informative and well worth your while to learn how everything is made and to contrast chocolate sourced from different regions. read more

If you need a little sweet treat while exploring Portland you need to stop in here! I am not a coffee person but sometimes you want a little beverage and Roste popped up on my map with their drinking chocolate. There were two chocolate varieties when I went, India and Indonesia with different tasting notes but both 70% cacao. The cashier asked if I wanted to sample which was super helpful! I ended up going with India which was a little fruity and a little caramelly - so delicious. You get a 4oz cup of the chocolate and a little shot of seltzer. Normally I don't go for fizzy water but it was the perfect companion for the rich chocolate! You also get a small cup of fresh whipped cream. This drink perfectly satisfied my sweet tooth and now I wish my city had a drinking chocolate cafe! read more

I've only gotten the chance to visit once, but their sweets and drinks were quite good. I'm not the biggest fan of things like sweet chocolate candies, but they offer desserts and drinks here that are more rich and bittersweet, which I appreciate! Sipping chocolate is great. The coffee was fine; my only advice to the shop is that you take care to not let it sour. Despite the upscale taste of their sweets, the interior was welcoming and felt very casual. The server at the counter was friendly. Overall, it's worth stopping by if you're in the area and a fan of proper chocolate. read more

What a treat this place is! I went in to pick up a too good to go order today and am certain I will be back. The service was fast and friendly. But the food is amazing! I got a double chocolate cookie, a double chocolate muffin and a double chocolate brownie. All were great but the brownie was the star of the show. I would highly recommend! The shop was so cute I can't wait to go back and hang out and try a sipping chocolate. read more

Was not a fan, unfortunately. The chocolate flavor profile skews towards light roast and sour, fruity notes. I know that some folk love this, just as some folk enjoy light roasted coffee, but I do not. I tried a drink that combined espresso with chocolate and cream as well as a thick, melted chocolate beverage that came with a side of whipped cream and a glass of soda water. They were ok, but not suited to my palate. The place smells of delicious chocolate when you walk in and is cozy, if a bit simple in decor/ambience. I also tried a house made chocolate baklava, a slice of their new fudge offering and gianduja (hazelnut chocolate paste) log. The baklava was just ok but the fudge was refreshingly dark and bitter rather than cloyingly sweet like most American fudge. The gianduja logs were also made with really smooth, tasty dark chocolate rather than the traditional milk chocolate Italian style and I very much liked it. All in all, I appreciate places like this and feel there's much potential here even if their chocolate recipe isnt quite there yet for me. read more

Update: after saving some brownie and finishing it at home, wow, it was really good. It was way too much to have it with hot chocolate because it is so intense with real deal chocolate. 4.5 stars for the brownie. I would say it is more of a chocolate torte texture than chewy brownie but it was delicious with roasted marshmallow on top. Underwhelming. We were very excited to try the hot chocolate. It had good rich chocolate flavor but not delicious, not sweet enough, too rich. Strange also that we got two drinks, one was earl grey hot chocolate, too subtle, but the amount of chocolate was very different between them, not enough and the other was too much. The older guy at register was great, very friendly. A younger girl didn't even look at me when I asked looking for napkins, not friendly. They do have sundaes that look delicious but I don't think we will be back. read more

Wish I came here sooner! What a unique spot with some of the best chocolate I've ever had. I got the Hot Chocolate which was thick and luscious but not at all sweet. This with their butter crossiant would have been amazing. However, their Chocolate Orange scone was also to die for. Warm, buttery, and flakey with bits of chocolate and orangy galze. Perfect combination. The Bicerin was super unique as well, being a layered chocolate and coffee drink. Their space is big and open with many seatings. Staffs were very experienced and knowledgeable. Exploring downtown and needed some energy, we came across this chocolate shop. So we decided to post up here. Here was our experience AMBIANCE: Parking: Welcome to downtown so you have some plaza parking here and there and then street parking. Seating: A chill place for individuals or small groups. Room for maybe 20-30 people. Vibes: This is downtown so you're relatively close to a lot of spots from the riverwalk or even Powell's bookstore. The spot itself is fun. Once you enter you see the chocolate churning machines. It's fun seeing how the chocolate swirts and the sweet smell of them. The spot itself is simple and spacious. Great place to study or catch up with a friend. FOOD: Bicerin (Recommend) Best of all ingredients here -sweet cream, chocolate, and espresso. A sweet and earthy flavors to give you a good wakeup. Dark Chocolate Chip Cookie (Recommend) A simple chocolate chip cookie with dark chocolate which made things not too sweet. The ingredients felt fresh and the cookie was soft. CUSTOMER SERVICE: Awesome! Friendly people that were quick with their service. TL; DR OVERALL: 4.5 Stars. Fantastic! I enjoyed my time here. Great choices, reasonable prices, delicious delights, and a pleasant ambiance. For those in the area and need a chocolate place, this is your spot. TIPS: * Follow their social media for seasonal updates. read more

Came here as part of a chocolate tasting experience with my team. Note that I didn't try any of their other offerings (pastries, coffees, etc) as the tasting involved several rounds of chocolate! A decently sized space with ample seating, this is a great spot for a team event and can accommodate 1-2 larger groups. I forget his name, but i think it was the owner, conducted our chocolate tasting. He was so passionate and knowledgeable about the history of cacao and chocolate in the US. I didnt expect an entire history lesson but i thought it really enriched the tasting experience. It was fun to learn about the origins of the chocolate we were tasting - and we were so fortunate to try one of the rarest chocolates in the world; he mentioned he had been trying to get his hands on some for 2 years or something like that. Please note that this isn't a place that just dumps sugar and milk into the chocolate - it really is about the tasting notes (like wine!) and variance of the cacao. Its a fun experience and I would definitely recommend it! read more

That staff was super nice and welcoming. The atmosphere is cozy but spacious, great for meeting up with a friend. Unfortunately neither myself nor my acquaintance enjoyed the Mexican hot cocoa, and I typically love Mexican or any spiced hot cocoa. It had a very off taste. I'm not sure if it was the type of chili they use or what exactly that had both of us toss the rest of our drink out. I would love to go back and try other hot cocoa drinks, the consistency of the Mexican hot cocoa was great, just the flavor was off putting. read more

A scrumptious and educational experience. I was turned off by drinking chocolates ever since Starbucks' Chantico product many years ago. But the version at Roste's is not sugar heavy so I didn't feel nauseated after a consuming a generous portion. I like to slowly add the oozing warm cacao to their homemade whipped cream. Or sip it between bites of some of their other goodies with a palette cleanse of sparkling water. The owner is wealth of knowledge on anything chocolate. End your date night here. read more

Good chocolate. Friendly staff and owner. Cozy ambiance. Perfect for dates, relaxing, reading, or doing homework. Would come back.

Went here today with my wife and some friends. We are celebrating my wife's birthday and our anniversary this weekend. Everyone wanted to go to a coffee shop. In my search for a chill place to go, I stumbled on Roste. So I said, "well why not chocolate and coffee?" I didn't have to twist anyone's arm. We went. The atmosphere here is cool. Kind of rustic meets industrial with a coffee shop flair. Their menu and bakery case gives more than enough options. So much so that I had some decision fatigue. I'll rate each item at the end of this review if you're interested. Folks who worked there were really nice. One told me their experience of a specific chocolate bar I was thinking of buying. It did take quite a while to get our food and drinks. However, they do have table service and the presentation is awesome. We had plenty of time and it was well worth the wait. Here are my ratings: Drinking chocolate: 7/10. It was pretty good. I wish it came with some other small bites of sweets like other chocolate places. It gives you a chance to really enjoy the flavors. Bicerin: 9/10. Never had one before and it was awesome. Definitely recommend. Chocolate cinnamon bun: 8/10. Soft, flavorful, roll with delicious chocolate/cinnamon filling. Went well with drinking chocolate. Breakfast sandwich: 7/10 decent b-fast biscuit with amble bacon. Would have liked it more w/out the sauce Mocha- 8/10 it tasted like a mocha should. Like coffee with some chocolate. Spiced mocha- 10/10. I am not one for these types of drinks but my friend ordered it. I took a sip and was shocked! One of the best chocolate drinks I've had in a long time. read more
