Enjoyed a girls dinner in Verandah, and I was very surprised it wasn't crowded on a Friday evening. Granted, we arrived early - right at 5pm - but this place has it all. First of all, it's a beautiful space with soaring ceilings and modern, elegant, tasteful decor. The service was incredibly polished yet warm. We very much felt like invited guests in someone's home. They have a full bar, and we enjoyed delicious cocktails when we arrived. We shared several appetizers and entrees, and every single dish was delicious and incredibly flavorful. The naan basket was also excellent, and I even remarked that their naan was much better than the naan we had at Michelin-starred Musaafer. We went there to celebrate early Father's Day. The owner greeted us and took care of us the entire evening. We ordered all their mocktails and a couple of drinks. Each one of them tasted great. Their appetizers were good too. For the cauliflower I would have liked it a little more tender but the entire thing looked and tasted good. Their biryanis were delicious. They were not your typical chicken biryani. There wasn't a lot of spices and things happening but it tasted fab. The interiors had paintings that their family had painted and made. The mandala was beautiful. The entire thing was about 2 hours. In that the owners came and spoke to us and about our families. They took great interest in our likes and shared some of their experiences too. It was quite refreshing. Couple of things that we didn't know and think it's worth noting: 1. There is no free parking. However the restaurant validates 2 hours of parking. Wish we knew that. 2. The tab includes 20% gratuity. Our server didn't even talk to us 1 time it was the owners. So wish we had an option to choose how much we wanted to tip her, 3. You don't need anything with the lil gas. They are stuffed and a complete meal. 4. We came here for a birthday dinner on a weekday night with a group of 4. The restaurant was pretty empty - with only 2 or 3 other tables filled. Parking is easy in the garage, and they validate the parking. The service was very slow. Our server was also doubling as the bartender, so it took some time for drinks to make it to us. There are definitely some unique drinks with Indian flavors, which is fun. Drinks were good. The food also took some time for it to come out - particularly the items from the grill, but they alerted us to that time beforehand which was nice. The food was good, but not great. The portions were slightly smaller than expected - particularly the grilled items. All the shrimp was cooked very well and flavored deliciously- definitely recommend ordering that. The ambiance is upscale and modern located in a nice part of town. There's plenty of space and I liked their decor. The service was standard. Nothing crazy. The food was good! The menu was very very diverse which is quite rare. Best part was the unique dishes actually had a unique flavor to them. Usually most dishes just kind of taste the same, but the goat dish we got had a distinct clove flavor, and the chicken dish had a distinct rich, lemony flavor. Good spot ! Went to Verandah on a Sunday evening for my husband's belated birthday celebration with 2 other people. We made a reservation and arrived on time. This area does have a parking garage attached but Verandah does validate parking! We were seated and greeted. We started looking at the menu and especially at the vegetarian options. It is definitely expensive- this is no regular indian restaurant (or though the prices seem that way). We checked out the appetizers and ordered the a mushroom pakora thing (don't remember the name) came with 5 pieces and samosas which came in 4 pieces. The batter was pretty tasty and as someone who doesn't like mushroom, I think they did a good job hiding the bland mushroom taste. The samosas were your usual samosas. We then ordered entrees- 1 Mushroom Makai Mutter, Panner Tikka Wkana, Dal Makhani, 1 more entree I don't remember the name of. We ordered it with 2 naan and 1 rice. The Paneer Tikka Wkana was pretty good, very mild which for someone who does not do well with spicy food, was good for me. I tasted the Dal Makani which was also good. Overall the bill came out to be over $100- we did all get our own entrees but it didn't seem to be worth that much. It was your average indian place nothing too special about the food. Very interesting menu. The drinks were out of this world. The menu descriptions were hard to judge and when your server isn't Indian they seem to not know the dishes- at least our server this visit. Verandah is a delicious upscale option for Indian food. This place is similar to Kiran and Mussafer, but I felt that the food was more flavorful here. There are many vegetarian options to choose from: we ordered kadhai paneer, palak paneer, paneer tikka w'kana, and an eggplant dish. Everything was tasty. The only item I wasn't a fan of was the vegetable biryani. It comes with unique and innovative presentation. The birayni is baked in a bread bowl type covering which they will cut open for you at the table (video below). While in Houston, I got to have lunch with a retired friend and this was her choice and OMG was it delicious! It was very relaxed for Saturday lunch and since we were early (to accommodate my meeting schedule), we had the place to ourselves for a bit. First the space... which is beautifully decorated and so very relaxing. The staff was amazing and very attentive, especially asking about any allergies. While the cocktail menu looked great, we stuck to tea. For appetizers we had the pani poori and beet root ki galouti. My friend said she wasn't a big fan of beets...until she tasted this. Both were amazing. For entrees we had tomato kofta and mushroom makai mutter, along with an assorted bread basket. Again flavors were rich and delicious and the variety of breads was so good. My family and I went here for a special occasion as we wanted to have a great meal at an 'upscale' restaurant to celebrate this occasion. The staff was good and the decor is nice. However the food was not worth the money at ALL. There are far better Indian restaurants in Houston that are worth the money, this place is not one of them. If you can appreciate authentic Indian cuisine that goes beyond your average tikka masala, then look no further than Verandah. While there's a place for desi fusion or Americanized Indian food, this place is not for that. Every item we tried distinguished itself from the others, with subtle and layered flavors that spoke to how carefully the dishes were crafted. We enjoyed everything we ordered, and loved how the spice/heat levels in the food stayed true to each dish and the way it is meant to be prepared. They also have a real tandoor visible from the dining area in which they cook their breads and tandoori items. This was my first time eating from here and I ordered their Butter Chicken togo today for curbside and it was fantastic. The tomato gravy in the order was very delicious, very aromatic and very abundant. The flavor of it was kinda sweet and savory with a great amount of spices used in it. The chicken pieces in the curry were tender and well prepared. This dish also came with rice and the price was twenty-three bucks total for the Butter Chicken order. The quality of this meal was great too and had that authentic and also upscale flavor to it too. I also got an order of samosas, which were four pieces in one order for nine bucks. I found this place because I googled Chef Sunil after W'kana closed down. The menu seems familiar, but the setting and pricing has gone upscale by far. We didn't know, but they generally need reservations because it is a pretty small space. However, they made room for us anyways. The food is just as great as I remember it. We ordered the Butter Chicken, Chicken Tikka Masala, Awhadi Chicken Biryani, Murgh Goli Shorba, Lamb Vindaloo, and Avacado and Pesto Naan. The absolute best is the Biryani. I have searched and searched, but I just can't find anything comparable. I think my only real complaint is that we ordered 4 entrees, but only came with 1 small bowl of rice, so we asked for more. After we asked for 2 extra rice, the waiter took it upon himself to add on an order of saffron pulao to our ticket and brought out a bigger bowl of rice. While $7 dollars isn't a big deal, each entree should really come with its own bowl of rice and we were not even told. I thought he was just being nice. But...honestly...the rice was amazingly delicious, so I should let it go. All of that and 3 sodas came out to about 150ish, but was well worth it to me and I hope to come back soon. read more

"I'll be back!" - Lazarus I really enjoyed my visit to Verandah for Houston Restaurants Weeks. I went with a group and sampled multiple items from the special menu. Everything was delicious and I'll be back to try the full menu eventually. This is legit, authentic, Indian food. If you're on the fence about it or it's not your jam, you may not be too keen on this place. Parking is in the parking garage, and there's a company that offers valet as well. There's no need to pay valet, because Verandah validates parking!! Bonus points. The decor is upscale; makes for a nice date spot or elegant dinning experience with loved ones. Dress nice or business casual or you may feel a little out of place. Naveen, the manager, is very customer friendly and will be more than happy to talk to you about your visit. This is a nice upscale Indian restaurant with a good ambience. I was a little anxious about taking my 1 year old along, after reading all the reviews about how children are not very welcome. We were invited here for someone else's party, which we couldn't really turn down. My little 1 year old was largely well behaved and loved the paneer tikka. The hosts/servers did not really seem too bothered by the little tot with us. The chef did come over to the table and let us know about the tasting menu that he has and how we would enjoy it more if we leave kids behind at home..lol. I mean, I get it. Verandah reports to have taken classic Indian dishes and present them with a fresh spin. I went with my significant other to the restaurant on a Friday evening. The interior has an upscale modern vibe to it. We ordered drinks that included the Madrasi whiskey saar and the Verandah daiquiri. Although the drinks are original and used interesting ingredients, the drinks tasted a bit watered down and run of the mill. In fact it was difficult to tell the differences between the two drinks we ordered. We also felt that they were overpriced at $17-18 each. Moving to the dishes, we ordered the mixed tandoori platter and the nargisi kofta with garlic naan. The mixed tandoori platter was the highlight of the night and had great flavor. The lamb chops were very tender and well marinated. However, I also think that this dish was overpriced ($55) and you can find better tandoori at other restaurants for lower cost. The nargisi kofta was good, but a bit of a sour taste. We did not order any of the desserts. We were surprised to learn that there was a 20% automatic service charge and the total bill was $160 for 2 people. I always tip 20% or more so this wasn't a big problem. Overall we enjoyed dinner and are glad that we tried verandah, but we will likely not come back because you can find good food have a good experience for less at other places. read more

While we were there, there was a party of maybe 12, a couple parties of 2 and our party of 3, so it can accommodate groups of any sizes. Drinks - Their cocktail list is so exotic and interesting I have a very hard time choosing. My dad got the masala chai and I got one with mango and pepper. The chai was unreal, the mango drink was good but I would order something else off the menu my next time. Appetizers - we got the fried cauliflower and a shrimp Dish. These were both amazing. I'd order them again in a heartbeat, only thing that would make me not is wanted to see what else is out there Main - we got butter chicken, chicken biryani, and a mushroom dish. "I absolutely do NOT recommend this restaurant" We went here Friday evening at 6:45pm. There were total 7 guests including 4 of us. Relatively deserted place compared to other Indian restaurants that we usually go in the evening at the peak dinner time. We are an Indian family who eat Indian food daily and know how authentic Indian food tastes. We eat out at several popular Indian restaurants in and around Houston. We ordered amritsari chole, butter chicken, tandoori roti, and butter naans. The breads were fresh and good. To put it mildly, both curries were not good at all. Butter chicken tasted almost like thick tangy tomato soup with pieces of chicken in it. Chole had a strong chat masala taste. I can recommend some other places where you get really tasty butter chicken (tomato base) and still would not taste the tomato sauce; that's the real art of cooking. I don't care about the quantity, but compared to other restaurants, their quantity is almost half (see pics) and prices more than double. Chole at $21 and butter chicken $26. Gratuity is automatically added to your bill at 20% whether you like the food and/or service. read more
