Random find on a recent trip to Dallas. My peeps and I were looking for a lunch spot on a Saturday afternoon. The Bishop Arts District was suggested as a hip, cool area with lots of places to check out. I found this place on Yelp with a favorable rating so we headed here. First off, the whole area is super cool. There was shops, bars and restaurants all around. Street parking is available, but hard to find. We ended up in a pay to park lot right down the street. We didn't have a reservation but was able to be seated right away since it was a late lunch/early dinner. Customer service was ok, nothing to write home about. Some of my dining companions were from out of town and really wanted to get a taste of some good Mexican food. We ordered frozen margaritas to start in different flavors. What was supposed to be one drink ended up being a couple of more rounds. They started us off with really good chips and salsa. I like that they give each person their own bowl of salsa. For appetizers, we got an order of beef empanadas and queso fundido with chorizo. Those beef empanadas were very good. They were big, with lots of perfectly seasoned filling. The queso fundido was a large, sizzling plate of cheesy goodness. The plate itself was cool as it had a sliding drawer underneath with hot tortillas. This dish was very tasty and could have been a meal in itself. We barely put a dent in it. For my entree, I went with Gimme A Chimi. Chimichangas is one of my go to dishes. They did it pretty good here. It was filled to the brim with fajita meat. I do think the meat could have been seasoned just a little better. Everyone at the table really enjoyed their meals as well. The camarones should have been sautéed slightly more to bring out the flavors. Also, the churros were a bit hard... making them softer would bring a better dessert. However, even with those two mishaps, this place was good! My husband raved about his food, and the kid's meal (chicken and fries) was so yummy, too! The chicken was cooked perfectly. We arrived during the lunch hour. Parking is nearly nonexistent around here. Get ready to park at least 5 blocks away. That being said, the customer service was exemplary. Drinks refilled, chips and salsa refilled, and the food was soooo delicious. This restaurant is in Dallas, so not many vegetarian options, but the few they had were glorious. My Saturday was perfected once I had my meal at Veracruz! Not only is it located in such a great location, the food was splendid! My boyfriend, friend, and I were very hangry after leaving an event in the city! While I was craving soup, they wanted enchiladas! Luckily Veracruz had both! I opted for their Caldo de Marisco, which is a seafood soup, and it was AMAZING! The size was good, and while it was on the pricy side, the portion made up for it. I only give 4 stars specifically because my boyfriend ordered their Mole enchiladas, and while they were great, he only got 2, both of which were small. For the price point, he expected to have at least 3. The service was great! We were able to sit down immediately and we made it just in time for 5$ brunch mimosas! Cute little cafe that is right next door to their main restaurant. It's small with a few tables and a couch. The staff was friendly and greeted me so warmly. I for one loved them, but they were on the spicier side. The service was very attentive. They made sure to refill when needed and checked up every so often. I ordered a coffee at an odd time (which was delicious as well). Although the coffee took some time they made sure to update me regularly that they were still working on it. I absolutely love Veracruz cafe! This staple in the bishop arts district is full of life and vibrancy. It may not be as fast paced as other places in Bishop Arts but no worries- this is a wonderful restaurant with super attentive staff and even more amazing food. It's like a little calm environment in the middle of Bishop Arts where you can catch your breath, a margarita, and great Mexican food. On this visit, I had the Burracho Del Pueblo (the town drunk) which was a carne asada topped with a Gordita, onions, and a jalapeño. It also came with a cheese enchilada. It was tasty though I wish it was a thicker piece of meat. Otherwise, it was so good! Though be warned: that jalapeño was very spicy so be careful if you don't like spicy food. Now I have to compliment the Gordita- it reminded me of how my grandma makes them. I almost cried while eating it because of the memories it invoked. Finally, don't sleep on that cheese enchilada!
