Treated my dad for Father's Day to his favorite restaurant. I loved the lively ambiance of the new location, the patio seating option, and the spacious sports bar. However, the food lacked flavor this time around for me - I tried the San Luis plate; the beef and the cheese enchiladas tasted just like the rice and beans. I walked out feeling bloated, curious if they use MSG more for the seasoning now? It's disappointing to know the nopales (cactus) is canned for the amount they charge - this is his favorite dish other than the menudo which is usually on point but they were out understandably on a holiday. The lengua (beef tongue) plate had more grilled onions than lengua. The tortillas as always are epic pancake-sized warm & fresh. The chips tasted fresh and the salsa is okay. The guacamole tasted freshly made. My favorite dish overall has always been the Huevos Rancheros but I opted for something different this time. Overall, I think it's gone down in quality to feed the masses but it's a great vibe for drinks and appetizers. Husband says the Pleasant Grove location has better quality. We'll see! read more

First the person that sat us did not make us aware that in the little room she put us in was super hot!They had one fan but it was pointing towards one person directly under his table. Came here to have lunch with my little brother and his family. Kept things really simple, a glass of water (he let me know that sodas are served in the can and therefore no refills) as the tea isnt sweet but they offer sugar for you to sweeten (real southerners know better) and the enchilada plate. We were offered chips and salsa as well as we waited for our food. I will say I'm picky when it comes to rice and beans but I really enjoyed them here. The enchiladas were simple but flavorful. Some really good Tex mex. Brought my parents as they were in town for the weekend. My mom got the cheese enchiladas like she does everywhere but she ate more than I've ever seen. I got the Cancun and every bite was good. Really love their refried beans and probably the best I've had. Nothing special about the frozen margarita though. Oh and the homemade tortillas are fantastic. So fluffy and delicious you can tell they are made the right way. First time at the new location and it was so pretty inside. We arrived early in the evening (6is) and were seated quickly. Our server Paco was great and the atmosphere is enjoyable. Lots of familiarity with customers suggesting a lot of regulars. Chips and salsa were good but, we have definitely had better. The Carne Asada was fine but not exciting and the same went for the burrito platter. Our rice and beans could also use a bit more flavor/spice. Overall dinners were good but lacking on flavor. There is better. As I said, looked like Gonzalez has allot of regulars who enjoy the food. This location is super cute. The decor is great. Our server Esmerelda was fantastic. I heard that they have been having issues with checks being wrong but we didn't have any issues. We ordered a variety of different dishes for our party of 5. The only one that truly enjoyed their food had the cheese chili relleno. We had enchiladas- both chicken and beef with both sauces, shrimp nachos and a special with taco and tostada. The plates are large, lots of food, but things were bland and not properly seasoned. They are known for their tortillas but they are quite unusual, very thick, almost like a pancake. The chips and salsa are terrible. The salsa had zero flavor or spice and the chips are straight out of a bag and not even high quality. I ordered queso hoping it would be ok but it appears to be straight out of a can and is also terrible. I ordered a margarita and it is way too big but was extremely weak. $14 and wheres the liquor? Tried Gonzalez Restaurant on a Sunday afternoon and had a 45 minute wait. This is probably due to the relatively small size of the restaurant. However, the food made up for the wait! Every thing was fresh and homemade. Our group of 6 tried the quesadillas, sour cream enchiladas, The Gonzalez special and Monterrey. We were craving Mexican food so we came across this place, barbacoa is my go to meat choice and luckily we happen to come on a Sunday cause that's the only day they serve it. I got the barbacoa "burrito" I thought it was going to be a wrapped burrito but it was more like a taco. Tasted amazing! The flour tortilla was so soft and pillowy you can def tell it's homemade. I went ahead and bought queso (which is horrid) just to get 6 tortillas for $18 fucking bucks. I won't be back. Such a ridiculous decision not to sale the tortillas to go with all the local tortilla shops to compete with. So this is a great place. They moved to a new location that is still off Jefferson. The new place is charming. I love the decor and the water feature. The food here is just excellent. I came with friends, and let me tell you. So authentic Tex-Mex. Their beans and rice are so good, and I had the enchiladas. They were full of good flavor, and don't forget about their amazing tortillas. If you want some darn good tortillas, this is the place to get them. So, if you are in the Bishop Arts area off Jefferson, check them out for some great food. Don't go too fast, though, because you will miss it. read more

My husband and I were looking for a new Tex Mex option closer to home in Oak Cliff, so we tried Gonzalez out on a Friday evening when our tried and true favorite had a wait and we didn't want to leave the hood. The location (seems like they moved recently) is beautiful, and the front desk staff is very nice. The waiter was nice, and took our drink orders right away, but after that it was pretty difficult to get him over to the table. But, let's be real, we all mostly care about the food, so let's get to that. Over the years living here, I've learned that a Tex Mex restaurant is easy to judge based on its salsa and sour cream enchiladas. Unfortunately, both the salsa and the sour cream enchiladas were bland and lacking. Seriously, the salsa tasted just like hot roasted tomato sauce. No spice, no bite, no acid. My husband usually goes through three bowls and didn't even finish half of his. The margs were good but already half melted when they got to our table. The sour cream enchiladas were literally just (tasty) chicken enchiladas with plain sour cream slapped on top. They were the worst thing at the table, easily. The chicken inside was good, but not worth ordering again. The tortillas were EXCELLENT, and the chicken soup was super tasty. My husband said his chili con carne enchiladas were decent, but nothing special. Overall, I don't think the food here is worth the price (we spent $100 for two adults and a kid) and we likely won't order anything here again other than the chicken soup and tortillas if we're feeling under the weather. read more

This use to be my go to spot. Their tortillas were so fluffy. Food was flavorful. I would drive over an hour just to come eat it. We would come very often. They recently opened/relocated to a new location. It's very cute decor, more opened and can accommodate more people. Lowers wait times. Which is all great. The waterfall is loud, making it hard to hear those across the table. Service was very slow. The queso was ok, but different from most queso. It had more of a sharp cheddar taste. The mole was horrible. The tamales were even worse. The tamale texture was very mushy, possibly undercooked. The crunchy beef tacos were great. The shells were freshly made. The prices are fair, but the portions are also smaller than the places I frequent where I live. Just be mindful when ordering for portion size. I had the cheese enchiladas with rice and beans, and let me tell you--this is the best cheese enchilada plate around. If you're a cheese enchilada fan, you will absolutely love it. Everything is flavorful, comforting, and made just right. My husband got the lengua, which came like a stew with onions, beans, a little salt, and salsa. I was in Dallas for a trade show and was craving good Mexican. I found Gonzalez on Yelp and saw photos of the tortillas and knew I had to try this place. The inside is cozy and not fancy. The service was great from start to finish. The menu had a vast array of Mexican food offerings so I opted for an old favorite, cheese enchiladas and tamales. OH MY GOSH! The food was FANTASTIC!!!!! The flour tortillas are just like I grew up eating but haven't been able to find for the last 25 years!
