Velo obviously knows what they're doing in terms of bicycles. They've got a high-end store with top brands, components, etc. I recently shipped my bicycle from the East Coast to here and had them reassemble it. They did it quickly, did a good job on it, and charged me $50--not a bad price, pretty reasonable. I then came in the other day to get a replacement tire for my bike. The sales staff was helpful and straightforward. I bought the tire and went on my way--a positive experience. Overall the shop is a bit pricey, which is why I gave it four stars. If you're looking for quality and sales staff with biking knowledge, though, Velo gets my thumbs up. read more

Ten days ago I purchased a new Bike from the folks at Pasadena Velo, and I couldn't be happier! The 35 year old family owned business is operated as if every customer is a family member. Hrach and his son Matthew are two of the most knowledgeable, professional and welcoming owners I have ever met. I had been looking to build and buy a new bike for years but wanted to be comfortable with the shop I would eventually purchase from. After visiting numerous bicycle stores in Washington, Oregon, and California, a cycling friend suggested I give Pasadena Velo a try. And am I glad I did. Matthew wanted to make sure that I would be pleased not only with my immediate purchase, but future service as well. Two stars for friendly service. I took my track bike to get a tune up, and as you may know a track bike is pretty simple to tune up. I told the mechanic that this a custom aluminum frame, and not to move my seat post because it's difficult to move since it needs to be rimmed down from the inside. He said okay. So when I came back to pick up my bici the next day. He told me fixed my seat post problem that it just needed more lube. (Which isn't the case at all) . I didn't say anything, I just thought about how I specifically explained to stay away from the seat post. I paid the service fee and left . When I got home I inspected the bike with more patience.. I'm happy he changed my locknuts like I asked. Then I took a look at my frame and I have little dents and scratches that weren't there before. And I know these happened because he was trying remove my seat post when I said not too. I am very upset because I just bought this frame last summer and it's custom. I've been very care not to scratch it myself even when I commute with it. And to know that it got scratched and dented at the shop is really disappointing. I tried to adjust my seat post to my height and of course the problem wasn't solved because more lube wasn't the answer. Also, none of my parts were cleaned, which I would expect to be part of the tune up. Needless to say, I most likely won't be getting my service here anymore. I so upset with dents and scratches. read more

Went in with my wife to get a bike because being surrounded by cyclists makes one want to start cycling yourself. I was considering purchasing a Nashbar Carbon 105 bike online for $1,100 which to me seemed like a great deal. However, I decided instead to purchase a bike from Velo after being recommended by the owner. I ended up walking out of the store with a Specialized Allez-Comp bike with the same Shimano 105 gearset that the Nashbar bike had. Not only that, the bike is very lightweight, and they threw in a free fitting along with the purchase. I got a great deal on the bike and it rides like a champ. Very happy with the service at Velo and the prices. Their people aren't pushy and obviously know their stuff, highly recommended. read more

I used to think this place was great. I bought a 5000 dollar bike here several years ago, and always returned for maintenance and accessories (gloves, shoes, helmet, etc). I always recommended them to others. A week or so ago I went in and asked for help with packing up my bike to ship abroad. I was told they could do it and I asked what the charge would be and was told "don't worry about it - we won't charge you". I left the bike, and when I came to pick it up I was told all of a sudden "that will be 100 dollars" (to pack it in materials from their recycling bin). Upon seeing my look of horror, he said he'd cut me a deal and charge 75. I had no choice at that point but to pay but I would never have agreed to that price had it been stated up front. I feel totally taken advantage of and will NEVER return. There are many good bike shops in town; I'll take my business to one of those. read more

I have noticed a trend in high end bike shops lately. Everybody is griping about how hard business is due to competition from online retailers. With that said one would think that brick and mortar shops would put an emphasis on customer service, and a friendly and incredible shopping experience. Velo Pas has the potential for a great customer experience.. there is history all over the walls, incredible new and old bikes expertly showcased... it is a roadies dream shop. However the attitude from core staff is snobby, gruff and it turned me off. I doubt I will be visiting the shop again. Road gear is expensive... don't punish me for looking for a good deal with a bad attitude or else risk loosing a relationship... Velo Pas... what is more important to you... a short term profit sale or a long term relationship with your customer... think about it. read more

This shop is the only kona dealer around so this is where I take in my kona precept if ever need anything done that I can't do myself. The only reason why I come to this store is because of the very nice and knowledgeable mechanic there. If not for him, based on the attitude of the boss and other workers there I'd go running. Just as an example, I went there a couple of weeks ago to get my chain replaced. An A-hole mechanic came and said that I have to leave it there over the weekend (what? it should take less than 5min to change - I'd have done it myself but I don't have the tools). I asked him if he could change it then because I want to go on some bike rides on the weekend. He said no and that he wants to go on bike rides too.....and I thought all along that it's their job to help out customers. Thankfully the nice mechanic came and changed it for me. Velo Pasadena is definitely on the pricier side, but I can't say 'much pricier' given the type of quality bikes they sell. I bought an entry level road bike from here not too long ago, during the time they try to offload last year's models to make room for new inventory, so I got a decent deal. I popped in because of their sale notice in front -- amazing how advertising works, huh? -- and right away someone greeted me when I walked in. He didn't ask to help me, but he did greet me. Once I started looking around, someone did ask to help me and quickly showed me entry level bikes as that's what I asked about. Once I mentioned my price range, he stopped trying to show me a Klein (nice bikes, out of my range) and showed me a Specialized Allez Sport. He offered to take one down off the racks and let me test ride it. This was good. Not all bike shops go to this trouble for someone who looks to be mostly window shopping. I was in pants and flip flops. The salesman offered me a discount (of course, it was a 2011 he wanted to offload), but I still wasn't happy with the out-the-door-price, so he asked his boss to see what could be done. After some typical haggling, they cut more off the price -- enough to my liking and I took the bike home with me. I have no qualms about them trying to get as much from me as possible; I in turn tried to pay as least as possible. I think we were both satisfied. They threw in a bottle cage and bottle for free (usual inclusions but always appreciated). The gear there is also on the pricey side, so be advised. Included was two years of maintenance (which applies to typical $45 type work) for free. Nice touch. Some places offer only one year of free maintenance, but then one place offers lifetime free maintenance, so two years was appealing but not spectacular. The one thing I didn't like, which might be due to my having worn pants that day, is that they didn't give me the bike fitting they talked about. Unless of course, "Sit on the bike. How does that feel?" counts as a professional bike fitting. I left a little confused, thinking that's all there was to the bike fitting, but then I wondered if they simply neglected to give me one. So, I can't fault them too much....yet. I might ask them about it when I go in for a visit oneday, but since I fit myself rather well, it's not an issue for me, but qua customer it's nice to get cleared up. Oh. I detected no bike snobbery...although some of them were clearly bikers themselves. read more

I had them repair and tune up two old 80s steel frame bikes (1985 Nishiki International, and Puch Marco Polo) as well as a 2006 Specialized TriCross and a 2012 Guru TT bike. Victor, one of their head mechanics, did a great job on them all. I've since bought some lights and bags and a rack there, and have been pleased with everything. By far THE. WORST. BIKE. SHOP. EVER. OVERPRICED. ARROGANT & UNHELPFUL STAFF. Like most of us know, the bike community can be a snobby and hierarchical one. Well, this shop is the epitome of all that is wrong with the community. There are too many bike shops around to give these people your business. I've been in here a few times over the years. First, in 2006. At the time I was a bike messenger, and needed a patch kit and a few other things. When I walked in, I was ignored by the staff, and when I asked where some items were, I was given an attitude as if I was wasting their time. At the checkout counter, I asked if they gave a messenger discount. When they found out I was a messenger, their energy hanged towards me. They became warm, friendly and helpful. So I purchased my items (got a discount) and left, and avoided this place at all costs. I went back a few times when I was in the area and needed a tube or tire, and each time it was the same story. Just a few weeks ago, I was in Pasadena with my younger brother. He just bought his first road bike, and is in that beginning stage getting into biking. So we were hitting up all the bike shops in the area, to look at stuff. We went into Velo to look at U-locks, and yup you guessed it, the same story. We were ignored. A guy walked by me and almost bumped into us. I was thinking what a rude customer...but then this "customer" went to the register to do something. So I asked the guy if he worked there, and he said yes with an attitude. I asked him where their U-locks were, and he pointed to them as if I was retarded and walked back to the repair area to talk to his coworkers. So my brother and I left without purchasing anything. I try to do most bike work myself, but when I do not have the expertise I enjoy coming over to Velo Pasadena for some help. Compared to most shops in the area, the employees seem to be very interested in getting me back on the trails ASAP and the atmosphere is very, very friendly (which is refreshing). If you go in for some work, ask for Raul. He has taken care of me many times, and always has time to listen to my concerns regarding whats wrong with my bike. He has consistently made sure my bike is running perfectly and safely every time, and always got the bike back to me sooner than I expected.
