I was shopping for a new e-bike to buy through a local incentive program (I'll post details at the end); I had done some research, visited the area's bike shops (which are all pretty great, in their own ways), and friends told me Velo carries Tern, the brand I was most interested in. (In general, Velo's selection of high-quality e-bikes is the widest and best I found in the area.) I was somewhat intimidated by all the serious cyclist bikes and gear at first, since I'm hardly the "Sporty Spice, Spandex/MAMIL/peloton" sort. But Velo has treated me very well. Mike persistently went the extra mile to negotiate with Tern for the model I wanted, and worked through bumps with the incentive program, which is just getting set up. I'm glad to have a good relationship with a local, independently owned shop where I can get my regular e-bike tune-ups. And I love "Blueberry," my new HSD S+, which I ride almost daily for all my local errands, visits, and fun! It's been a real game-changer for me. ~ The incentive program is called Replace Your Ride (www.ReplaceYourRide.com) and it's run by South Coast Air Quality Mgmt District (SCAQMD). It's an income-qualified car-swap program, meaning you turn in your 2007 or older, high-polluting vehicle in exchange for up to $7500 toward an e-bike, depending on your income. It's free to apply, but does take several months. Went in for a simple adjustment that I could not figure out. It looks like they build out high end bikes there.There were 3 mechanics- 2 older gentlemen and a young guy. This is a good neighborhood bike shop. They do sales, and repairs. They sell everything related to bikes, all you need to do is ask! There is so much in the store, it can be overwhelming, but just ask any of the people there and they can point you in the right direction. I've already asked about wheels, bars and hydration, gears, tires, fitting, and they have helped me out. The owner, and his family are great people and they all ride. They even have rides you can join on! They also give back to the community (you may see their van around So Cal)! Parking is free, and there is a large lot in the back. Disappointed with staff's "we're better than you" behavior. It's funny because they work at a bike shop. Asked for a price on a vintage bike for which they didn't know and said we'll only take it down if you're willing to spend $20k which they sounded like a shady used car salesman. Got a set of Mavic wheels off ebay from this store. they worked with me to come get them and save some money. they also help me set up the cogs and free hub. the free hub that came on it was not the right one, but they changed it out for me and set it up perfectly. thanks. the store itself is real nice. all kinds of top end goodies. great bike selection. mostly road bikes from what i could see, but also had MTB etc. LOTS of great parts and accessories. lots of top level stuff to choose from. nice staff and the mechanics are great. i will use this store when i can, im not in that area, but ill try to go back here for stuff if i need it. read more

I had such an amazing experience at Velo today. I got into a cycling accident last week that left me feeling nervous and even a little hesitant to get back out on the road. I am a newer cycler to begin with, but the staff, especially Mike, were so helpful and patient with me as I explained what I was hoping for, which I know was super complicated. They helped me find the bike that made the most sense for me given what I wanted, they offered me adjustments and support, let me take the bike out for a spin, and sent me home with the best bike I've ever owned, same day! They have awesome inventory, knowledgeable and friendly staff, they service bikes that are not purchased from them (hard to find that for some reason??) and they are super patient. I think most shockingly given my experience with other bike shops over this last weekened, they were really honest with my about what bikes made the most sense, even suggesting a bike that was nearly $800 less than the bike I came in interested in (I opted for the more expensive bike given its versatility anyway, but it was nice to see money wasn't the only motivator in that shop.) Overall, 10/10 would recommend. I can't wait to ride again and I'm back out on the road thanks to Velo in Pasadena. read more

Was in the market for a new bike in the time of covid. My boss gave me a recommendation for his favorite shop so of course I stopped by. Hrach, Matthew, and Zach were friendly, knowledgeable, helpful, and didn't try to upsell me on anything. After a few bikes, I was pointed to a Kona which Hrach adjusted for me on the spot and let me take it for as many spins up and down the street as I wanted. He wasn't even offended that I wanted to check out a few other bike shops before making a decision. Two hours later, I was on my way back to Velo. Hrach and Matthew both get me settled on the bike, pedals, and asked me if I wanted shoes to go with it. No pressure at all. The shop was a little busy, but service was quick. Hrach and Zack helped me out with shoes and Zach gave me a quick 101 on clipping in and out. After my poor bike spent a year in a garage, it needed some love. And since I somehow lost my helmet and bike shoes, the bike was doing me no good. Bad experience at REI (see that review) and a hundred bike shops on Yelp to sort through but as my GPS steered me around freeway traffic I drove by Velo and decided to stop in. Now, I look as much like a serious biker as I look like a high wire artist, so the fact that these people were so nice and took me seriously is a very nice thing. I've been in bike shops where all they want to do is sell bikes to as many people as possible, and other bike shops where if you don't look like you live on your bike they have no time for you. These guys were great. And I openly admit I am a sucker for bright shiny things so I love going into giant sprawling bike shops that have tons of gadgets and accessories. Velo is a smaller, much more controlled environment. Which was a very good thing. These guys know bikes and biking. Big shout-out to Dante who helped me. I brought my bike in and Dante steered me towards the products and maintenance / service. He was extremely patient and knowledgeable, and when I asked about a particular kind of shoes he answered honestly (they were above my expertise and a waste of money for my needs). My bike was in need of new tires (an unrepairable tear) and some serious love, so I left it and it was ready a day early. I picked it up today. It has never looked or felt better, and as soon as it dips below a thousand degrees I'll be back on the road. Great selection of products and I'm sure I'll be back for other accessories. I'm giving it 4 1/2 stars because I had a very good experience. It's not in the heart of any major shopping plaza, it's not super fancy, and maybe that's not for some people. I also suspect that this store caters to casual riders as well as hard-core serious bikers, but maybe not so much in the middle. I always support small business when I can, and I know there are lots of bike shops around and I'm sure a lot of them are very good. Also don't be afraid to ask questions and take your time. All the upper end road bikes are now in the 12k to 15k$ price range. You pay more for less weight. A good bike shop. 4 stars for them. Would never go to this place again. Brought my bike in for some specific repairs and asked also whatever basic tuneup it might need. The bike had been given to me by a friend so just brought it in before giving it too much of a once over since I knew it needed some really essential work before I could even consider getting on it. Well, I'm riding it today and noticed the brake pads are like dry old erasers and I can barely stop. Why did they neglect to replace or bring this up as a talking point? I didn't notice while there because I didn't get a chance to ride it around the block or anything before checking out. Really really bummed as my bike doesn't feel especially safe after shelling out $$$ to get it road ready. A number of employees were also not wearing masks at all and zero social distancing was taking place. read more
