I asked about bike seats and the guy couldn't bother to come over to the display. I asked if I can get my seat bones measured and the guy just points me to the device and doesn't even bother to try to help. Same problems you can get in any sports store, I.e. surf, skate, tennis, etc. : condescending, man-splaining, dismissiveness, if they don't feel you're at a certain caliber of skill or knowledge, unless you look like a sucker they can sell an over-priced bike to, a celebrity (bike famous) or a typical bike bro who rides around the Rose Bowl every Tuesday and Thursday. That said, they are a necessary evil, since brick and mortar bike stores rarely can afford to stock top-shelf gear. They have very nice bikes to be sure. They use to have a location in Toluca Lake and/or another in Atwater Village that are no longer in business, if that's any indication of their business acumen and bedside manor. I'm a 52 year-old cyclist who's ridden countless miles all around the world since the age of 13 and I've spent thousands and thousands of dollars on cycling gear, but I've finally had it with these guys condescending, used car salesmen attitude. The father Hrach is a terrific guy but the son and his buddies have ruined this wonderful bike shop for me. First rule of sales: The customer is always right. Don't assume any customer you don't know personally is an idiot and not worthy of your attention and courtesy. I know scores of cyclists from Santa Monica to Rancho Cucamonga who will NOT shop here -- guess I will be joining their boycott as well. read more

I've been going to this shop now for around eight years and during that time they have risen to the top of my list of all the local options both in service and sales. They consistently have the highest quality accessories, clothing and fastest service. At first glance they may appear on the pricier end but they have a strong sales rack and are often open to win your business with a discount. Over time I have begun to appreciate the fact how accountable they are to completing fixes on time and within budget. Once I have the cash to upgrade to a better bike they'll be my first stop. I came in here looking for a specific frame (Pinarello) and was approached by one of their sales rep. He asked me what I was looking for and asked how much I was willing to spend. I told him and apparently it wasn't to his liking. So he told me he would check and never bothered to come back. It's a shame that this is how this shop operates cause I ended up purchasing a top of the line F12 from another customer friendly shop. read more

Just want to add another 5-star review! We bought our Santana tandem road bike 2 years ago at Velo Pasadena (which I believe is the largest dealer for Santana on the west coast), and the shop's customer service has been consistently fantastic. Although the shop is a long drive for us (from Orange County), we go there because the mechanics are great, the owner Hrach and his staff are super helpful and knowledgeable, and there's always great stuff (bike accessories and a very nice selection of clothing) there to check out. I'm a bicycle fanatic and have been to a lot of bike shops, and VP is definitely one of the best around! It's difficult for a stand-alone, family-owned shop like VP to compete with the big chain stores and online retailers, but you do not get the great service VP provides when you buy stuff at those other places. read more

I called for an estimate for a bottom bracket install. I was told $40. I brought my bike in with the extra replacement BB and was told without the shop looking at my bottom bracket that I needed a new one. I was also talked to like an idiot who didn't understand bicycles. I had my crankset loosely bolted on the bike which of course would throw of the chainline which I told them. The shop just kept cutting me off telling that all the parts were incompatible and that was why the crankset was not lined up with the front deraileur and no they never used the word "chainline", just cutting me off that it was all the wrong parts and that's why it was all off. The bottom brackets were exactly the same, they were NOT incompatible. The price to install a bottom bracket was now $50 plus the cost of a new bottom bracket. Total price: $72. To support a local bike shop and get a new BB, for $32 extra. ok fine. I was called by the shop that the bike was ready and but they cleaned out the bottom bracket for another $20 without asking. Total price $92. When I picked up my bike the total bill was now $100. One tire now wasn't holding air which they wanted to repair which I declined. it was fine when I brought the bike in. When I looked at the tube later, it had a pinch flat (about cm long) that again wasn't there before. Tire fixed, I went for a ride but now surprised to find one of the brake calipers extremely loose, which again wasn't there before I brought the bike in. This was like the old stereotype of a car repair shop nightmare that adds charges and work w/o asking and keeps increasing prices as they go. And brake things so they can fix it. Loosening my brakes is WTF though when I'm not braking well downhill on a winding road. I ate the dishonest up charging and but as I discovered the pinch flat and wobbly brakes after bring the bike home, I think its worth throwing in an honest review so if you ever get this initial treatment, you might be getting bamboozled. read more

Besides single bikes, this is a great place to get a bike tandem. I wanted a Santana road tandem and, thankfully, Santana referred me to Velo Pasadena. Velo Pasadena had a size small road bike tandem for me to demo with my husband, which helped strengthen my decision to buy a Santana tandem. Michael was a great help in helping me decide every single component/options/upgrades on the Santana tandem that we ultimately chose. He was very responsive to phone calls and emails which was greatly appreciated. Hirach (Sorry, I don't know how to spell the name)(the bike store owner who also tandems with his wife) and his son, Matthew, were also very attentive to our needs on the day that we picked up our tandem. I came here to see if they have a training bike for my son. The young man informed me that it would be better not to get a Strider. He told me that getting a regular bike and taking off the pedals and training wheels will work just the same. So when he is ready to ride a normal bike they can put the pedals back. Which will save me $ in the long run from buying two bikes. This young man is very intelligent in bike knowledge. OK he knows how to sell. Great sales person. But no I didn't buy anything here. It's past time that I write a review for these guys. Years ago I helped my sister buy a bike from Velo Pasadena, and their honest, no-pressure salesmanship was commendable, especially having experienced the sales process at other shops in the area. I was sold, and made a note of them as a place to visit if I was ever in the area. Years later, I've now gone through them for a warranty process, and couldn't have felt better taken care of. I've raced and wrenched my own bikes for years, and the guys at the shop are knowledgeable with about being pushy, and actually listen to their customers. If you've been around enough bike shops, you know this isn't common. Can't say enough good things about these guys, and that's without mentioning all of the classic frames hanging around in the shop! read more

This is the best local bike shop (LBS) in Los Angeles. If you come in more than a few times, you're in the club. At Velo, it seems that they develop relationships and go above and beyond to serve their customers. Hrach, the owner, is a retired pro racer. There are old racing picture on the walls and a museum quality collection of retired jerseys and race bikes on display. Wow. The whole crew lives cycling. There are organized group rides, and through this life long association with the sport, the shop is great at diagnosing and fixing all problems. The store carries a curated collection of top bikes (World tour bikes to commuters) and great accessories. Bike prices range from $500 to $15,000. I have bought two bikes from Hrach, and I'm sure I'll be back for more. Most recently I purchased a power meter. I love bike tech and data. The power meter however didn't live up to my expectations. The shop took it back as a return without any hesitation. It's so rare to have such strong customer service, that it prompted my Yelp review. I strongly recommend everyone visit Velo, at least for the free coffee and to chat with Hrach and the crew, you'll be hooked by their customer first attitude and amazing history. read more

This is THE place to come for a road bike - every budget from high end to family. Hrach is a former racing pro who fitted me, got me a great deal on a trade in Colnago and I hadn't been on a road bike in 20 years. He gave me a discount on the accessories too! What a great shop! I would drive from West LA to come here. I like the atmosphere of this place. It's like the barbershop for cyclists. While I was there trying bikes -- cyclists (people older than me who'd given up running or other sports for cycling) came in to get their chain fixed, pick up some gear or to just chat. We were worried we wouldn't be able to repair it or not without a hassle at least.... but We took his bike to Velo Pasadena and Chinchilla was very, very helpful. He did everything AND more to help us out. We walked in on a Sunday afternoon about an hour and a half before closing and he was able to fix my husbands bike! I just wanted to thank Zach for taking the time to fix my mountain bike yesterday. I originally took it back to the bicycle shop where I bought it and was assured it was fixed. To make a long story short, it was not fixed. I then took it over the Velo Pasadena. Once I got into the store, one of the employees asked if I had been helped. I said "no" and he asked Zach to help me out. I explained to him that I was having problems with the gear slipping once I put it into a high gear. Zach looked it over and was able to quickly find that the chain quick link was installed incorrectly. I was charged a very reasonable fee for the work. The bike works great now. Velo Pasdena is one of the better bike shops I've seen in regards to the quality of bikes/frame-sets, bike gear and technical knowledge. Prices for their gear is a little higher than most, but deals can be had. My wife and I were new to the area and were looking for a LBS to service our bikes and join local rides. We're primarily recreational riders and were looking for group rides to help foster our outdoor activities. We'd spoken to the VP rep and he suggested that we join Gruppo Velo as they have rides for all levels and we would be a perfect fit into the group. Gripe: We both purchased an annual membership, but after a few weeks of nothing (ride notices) + several phone call and onsite visits the notices finally arrived. We were also promised a 1 year subscription to Peleton magazine with our new membership, but after sending several emails; nothing. We received (4) Pedal Spin passes with our membership - great spin studio! Pros: Knowledgeable and experienced bike staff and mechanics, carries higher end bikes and gear. Cons: 1) Follow-through has much to improve. 2) Came into their shop several times and was just put-off by their lax or snobbish attitude - give me a reason why I should spend my money in your establishment.... read more

Update: Changed from 2 stars to 1. Too bad there's not a 0 star option. This is quite a sad look for you, Hrach. Denigrating my equipment, lying, and refusing to take responsibility for your own utter incompetence and communications failure. The shifters I brought in were fully compatible with the Di2 generation installed on the bike. They were listed as such in Shimano's own compatibility chart. The firmware upgrade I asked you to perform would not have bricked the system, as that only happens with mixed generation systems. Which this wasn't. You wasted several days worth of my time and clearly have a very limited understanding of Di2 and technology in general. No shame in it, just admit to it and do better rather than shirking all responsibility. You're damned right you shouldn't have charged me. He spent all that time? Not my fault your mechanic can't read technical documentation properly. You didn't do me any favors. I'm not grateful for the fact that you're incompetent and wasted my time and yours. You accomplished nothing other than spinning your wheels and telling me utter nonsense. FYI, I brought this issue to a competent shop and they upgraded the firmware and had the bar end shifters working with less than an hour's wait. Everything you said was utterly wrong on both a technical and customer service level. You did nothing for me and refuse to take responsibility for your own lack of skill and instead try to shift the blame to the customer. Sad. Learn something about technology, cross train your mechanics and take ownership when you fail. I dare you to respond again with some more of your utter trite so I can dismantle it word by word. Had you just admitted that you screwed up and apologized, I would've upgraded or deleted the review. Instead you snidely insult my equipment to cover up your knowledge gap and refuse to take responsibility. Go piss up a rope. read more

I called in around opening time to see if it might be possible to have some minor servicing (tire swap/bar tape) done same-day and was invited to bring it on by and shouldn't be a problem. When I arrived it turned out that the service shop was all booked up (easy miscommunication/nobody's fault), but they honored the same-day promise I was given on the phone, even after I offered to return on another day! Great businesses stand by their word and these guys definitely have a new customer in me. Good selection of bikes and gear. Went here to get a high end Santana tandem which I bought. The bike is great. The staff there aren't too interested in post sale experience or even the sale of expensive purchases. The bike was purchased and supposedly prepped and tuned to ride out the store. The rear Di2 derailleur was not dialed and when i checked tire pressure when I got home the psi was at 50psi! I have returned to buy other accessories and dealt with the service area for parts and there seems to just a general lack of interest. The only one excited about bikes is the owner with his collection of vintage bikes. Love my Santana tandem regardless. read more

I own a Stromer ST2 which had an ongoing electrical issue with it's lights for months! I had bought the bike back in Brooklyn and for this very issue, I had to drop my bike off to that shop for service work multiple times for multiple days at a time, with no result. I had given up hope on my ST2 and was clueless to how it would get fixed. I am a self sufficient mechanic for my road bike, but electric bikes are a different story. Diagnosing issues can be hard enough, let alone fixing them. I found Raul at Velo Pasadena thru Stromer's recommendation and dropped off my bike with not much hope. I was expecting confused phone calls from Raul about how he could not fix the darn thing... but he called me once in less than a week and told me my bike is ready for pick up by the end of the day and that everything works fine!! The shop itself has great selection of bikes, components and gears. The inventory is enough to make any gear-head drool! The gents working at the shop are real nice and seem to be up for a conversation on anything cycling. I am a visually impaired athlete and finding a place like Velo Pasadena, which feels like a second home, seems like a miracle to me. Did I mention how much I love Velo Pasadena. Yep, they did it again! Just spent over two hours with Raul on an in-depth one on one class on how my bike works. From shifting and the gears, to unhooking the brakes and taking off the wheel in the front and the back as well which was a little bit more difficult and time-consuming. Everyone at Velo is awesome, Victor, Raul, Greg and Michael, and of course the big daddy at Velo Pasadena, Hrach!! Raul, thank you so much for being so patient and I have to say, you are an amazing teacher! I dared him to do it with his eyes closed and dammit, he did it! No excuses for me. If Raul could do it with his eyes closed, then dammit so will lie. I just have to practice and practice, like he does. I came home with a bike trainer that works on my tandem!! Might not seem like much but everyone said there was no trainer for a tandem, even the bike manufactures... But Hrach came through once again! Oh yeah, I'll be able to finally sit on the front saddle of my bike, at least on the trainer at home! So cool! read more

Took my bike to be inspected due to a skipping under load issue when I brought it i showed them how and when it skips I was told to come back in two days when I returned they were clueless about the issue harash said it didn't skip so i showed him how and when it skipps again totally wasting my time. I informed them that parts and bike were new they assumed that I was not well verse on bicycle and components. they sold me new replacement cassete and chain that didn't fix the issue harash looked bothered when I asked for a refund for the parts he sold me that didn't fix the bike he charged me for labor which I paid.. Harash then said the issue was the back wheel but didn't offer to further assist me with finding and getting the bike fix, left me a fellow road cyclist hanging nasty. So I went on YouTube and I ended figuring it out myself it was the freehub pawls that were not engaging properly I took it apart cleaned it lubed it and put it back together ended up fixing my own bike. Disclaimer: I know that there are many different types of cyclists, and I'm only speaking from the perspective of one type, namely an able bodied straight size sporty road cyclist. This is an awesome place. I called beforehand to ask about buying a road bike, and the staff is knowledgeable and helpful. Mike was the salesperson who helped me when I went. He was not pressuring me to buy something expensive, and is very patient answering my numerous questions. Test riding was nice and easy. I was new to clipless pedals and he was patient taking out road and mountain shoes for me to try. There's a trainer in the shop for the basic fitting that comes with buying a bike. He also let me use the trainer to practice clipping in and out before I rode the new bike home, so I skipped that "rite of passage" of forgetting that I was clipped in and then fall when stopped. OK, I did forget when I arrived at my apartment complex after remembering at numerous intersections, but unclipped just in time not to fall. But I have gotten a hang of it since then. After over 100 miles on this bike, overall I love it, though I didn't really like that default saddle because it puts a lot of pressure on sensitive tissues, so I went back to get another saddle. To be honest, saddle discomfort put my mom off riding altogether. I was worried about spending fortunes on saddles that don't fit. Fortunately, there's a nice saddle trial program, in which I try a new (probably actually used by someone else who didn't like it but new to me and in good condition) saddle in exchange for the old default one, and they would let me keep on trying until I find one that works and pay the difference in prices between the default one and the one that works. So far I like that second saddle I'm trying. I expect great experience when I bring this bike in for a tune up after a few months, or maybe a Retul fitting if I get crazy about it. I also love that museum of vintage road racing bikes in the eastern e-bike wing of the shop. This place seems more catered to road racing, and has a large inventory of road bikes. I'm not sure what the experience of someone who wants a city bike for errands would be like here and I usually take my grocery bike elsewhere that clearly has a different target demographic for maintenance and repair. Nor do I know what the experience of someone too short or too heavy for the most common bike sizes or has a disability that requires adaptations to the bike would be like. There's one thing that bothers me though. The staff seems to be all male and I felt somewhat intimidated as I'm often the only woman in the shop. Well, at least they have a frame small enough for me and a good selection of women's clothing. But I definitely don't feel comfortable talking about women specific bike issues. About 90% of cyclists I see on the streets of LA are male, whether they wear the "kit" or not, and I still wonder why. That LA is not bike friendly might be one reason, and whatever sort of culture that led to the all male staff could be another. Nevertheless, I will keep coming back for anything road bike related. read more
