Sigh I wish this place was closer to Richmond. All the way out in chilliwack is this little gem. Vedder sushi is located right on Yale road and it's just so good here. First time here and definitely will come back to get sushi. Currently it's take out only FYI. * Salmon sashimi ($14.95) ~ beyond amazed how fresh the sashimi was. Thick cut salmon sashimi slices with one of the freshest ones I've had in a while. They were generous on the thickness and it was super good. * Red dragon roll ($13.95) ~ this was soo good. It was one of my favourite rolls especially with the load of spicy tuna on top! The sauce was chef kiss on the roll and it was just so fresh it was crazy. * French kiss roll ($13.95) ~ smoked salmon layed on top, and it was delicious. The sweet sauce was subtle but paired with smoked salmon gave a great burst of flavours on your taste pallet. I really enjoyed this roll and I'd get it again in a heartbeat. * Also got dynamite roll ($6.95), & yam roll ($7.95). * 10/10 ~ everything was super fresh and delicious, I really enjoyed it. They had really great service and I enjoyed most of my dishes. The takoyaki came out hotter than other Japanese restaurants in the city (hotter tastes better and creates better texture) and the sauce was very delicious. The prawn tempura was perfectly battered, a lot of crisp and lightness to it. The rolls were generous portions but the shrimp in the dynamite roll could've used a little more time in the deep fryer. Tried this place for the first time last evening. Nice decor and appears very clean. Service was ok as was the food. Sumono salad was decent but shrimp seemed a little tired. We ordered the love boat for two and arrived well presented. The rolls were nice and the sushi and shashimi were just ok. A little disappointed that there was no tempura included, Overall a pleasant place but as newbies to the area we shall continue to search for a really good sushi place. read more

Their food is very fresh, I have eaten at many sushi places all over the Lower Mainland and this is by far one of the freshest - and it's in The Valley! This restaurant is a favorite of sushi-lovers in the valley. It's well known that they have the best sushi in town. The ingredients are always fresh and good quality. However it seems that their good reputation with food has made them feel they can skimp on the quality of their service. My family ordered takeout from them after coming back from a day in Harrison Hot Springs. I gave them the order over the phone, and the fan was going full blast in the car so it was hard to hear. I made sure the lady on the phone repeated the order back. Once we got there, the food was ready and she rang us up. However, when we arrived home and opened up our takeout bags it was clear there were some things missing. I would've checked if this were a place like Mcdonalds where the labour is cheap and the boxes are all clearly labeled, but I wasn't about to open up all my white unmarked takeout boxes in the restaurant. We discovered that one noodle dish was missing and that we only got half the tempura we ordered, so I called them back and said I'd come back to pick up the missing food. It was especially troublesome since we live across town in Fairfield, so it was a minimum 15-20 minute drive in the rain while the rest of my family ate without me. When I got there I saw the noodle dish was now waiting on the counter, though it wasn't there before when we picked up the original order, so I can only imagine it was finished cooking a few minutes after I left or was just out of sight at the time. When they gave me the dish they didn't remember I had also mentioned the tempura was wrong, so I reminded them about that. We had ordered an assorted tempura with 15pc and we only got an appetizer tempura with 7pc. They seemed confused at first or like I was lying about the order. I'm surprised they got it wrong when I repeated it twice to make sure she heard me right over the phone. They started making another 8 tempura or something and the manager looked at the receipt to see if we'd paid for the full one. We only ended up paying for the appetizer, since I didn't bother to check the order, so she made me pay for the difference. Now that may seem fair, but in this industry it's pretty standard to fix these errors for free. It's not as if I ordered an appetizer on purpose to dupe them. After they messed up my order and forgot to hand me one of the dishes, and I had to drive all the way back to pick it up, I would've appreciated a little extra consideration. They did the bare-minimum service-wise. If all you care about is the quality of food, go ahead and eat here but if you are used to the service standards that most other restaurants adhere to, consider eating somewhere else. read more

My friend who has lived in Chilliwack all of her life swore this sushi was the best she has ever had. I figured it was worth a shot and we went there for lunch. I feel bad rating so low because the staff were super nice and attentive, but is' more the food than the service. I got a salmon maki and the presentation was so messy. The seaweed wasn't wrapped properly around the outside and it was all uneven. The rice was on the dry side. I also got a spicy tuna cone and I could barely finish it. I was a huge fan of another local Sushi place (and even wrote a review about it https://www.yelp.ca/biz/seven-sushi-chilliwack) but then they sold and the change was too much for me. Vedder Sushi is my new favourite place in town. I'm pretty boring in my choices, almost exclusively maki (with or without nori), nigiri and sashimi. I don't like all the goop people pile on to bizarre-looking, oddly named creations that look like colourful deep-sea animals that exploded out of a crayon factory. Give me you basic salmon, tuna, or other fish over rice and a dynamite roll with some Miso soup and tea and I'm a happy patron. Maybe that's why I tend to be hard on sushi places. Because my fare is always the most simple, stripped-down items it has to be done properly. There's another place I frequent in nearby Abbotsford with some friends I meet with every week at a computer club I run, but I don't have the heart to review that place because it's not very good. My friends like it, but they're always ordering crazy goop-rolls. Maybe I need to move my club closer to Vedder Sushi. I'd likely eat there more often, and I might be able to educate my friends to enjoy decent sushi. I've had slightly better Sushi in other parts of the world, but we're talking places like San Francisco, where businesses don't survive if they're not great. This is Chilliwack, home of grazing cows and corn fields. Vedder Sushi is a good place, the staff is very nice and friendly, and the consistency is great. I really like it :) read more

Had the assorted sushi with dynamite roll and California roll. The dynamite roll tasted as if the tempura prawn was cooked the day before not fresh. The California roll tasted bad to the point it was about to expire. Both rolls heavily sprinkled with sesame seeds, maybe to mask the taste of the fish in the role not being fresh. The night sushi pieces were very small. The appetizer tempura you tasted more oil than a nice tempura batter. The dipping sauce was in such a small dish there was basically none there. Overall for the price I was not impressed and have eaten sushi all over the lower mainland and Valley since 1983. Remember this not a true sushi restaurant as proper sushi chefs go through approx 8 to 10 years of training. read more

I recently moved to the 'Wack - as I affectionately call it - and Vedder Sushi was my first sushi since the move. My prior exposure to sushi in Chilliwack was at Seven Sushi, and I think it was prior to the "new ownership" I've read about in recent reviews. Vedder offers incredibly large, delicious portions - but, the price tends to reflect that. Had I known just how much food you get, I could have knocked at least $20 off my bill by reducing the number of items I bought; however, price won't stop me from ordering here because everything was really great. We just moved to Chilliwack and have already been here twice. Moving from Vancouver, we have pretty high expectations for sushi so we weren't sure what to expect. So when we went here for the first time, we were very pleasantly surprised! The staff are actually Japanese which is awesome. They are very friendly and welcoming. The food tasted great. It was fresh and we were impressed. It isn't the best we've ever had compared to places like Miku and Kishimoto in Vancouver (a few of our faves) but still really good! They have always given us more than we ordered which is really nice of them as well. We definitely recommend Vedder Sushi! :) read more

I found Vedder Sushi via Zomato and other online reviews. I travel to Chilliwack every week for business and came here alone for a quick lunch a few weeks ago. Service was prompt and friendly. I will give them credit for that. Food was mediocre though... sashimi cuts were in blocks instead of slices. This affects the texture making it stiffer instead of soft/buttery when cut in angled slices. Freshness was okay. I ordered a selection of nigiri and that was very disappointing though. The edges of the hamachi had turned from red to grey, likely due to being stored too long or at the wrong temperature. It tasted off... It was also scored for some strange reason? Ikura eggs didn't "pop" (stored too long). Scallops used for chopped scallop nigiri/rolls were also left sitting on a strainer at room temperature on top of the sushi bar for the whole hour I was there. Overall there seemed to be an issue with the freshness/preservation of anything that wasn't tuna or salmon. My guess is that it's because those two sell quicker than their other cuts of fish... Despite the mediocre experience, I left them a constructive 3 star review on Facebook. They then proceeded to block me from their Facebook page. My husband found this place via reviews and we are not local to Chilliwack, but had to be here for 1/2 day so decided to try it. I order 'special rolls' everywhere I go and I have to say these are the best I have had so far! Very impressed with everything. They might seem pricey but the rolls are huge - one will definitely do. We tried the Lion King roll and the Everest roll. The sushi chef kindly sent us an amuse bouche which was 2 pieces of a roll that peaked my interest in the menu and I liked that too. My husband ordered a negitoro cone and the chef gave him a bonus one too. I'll definitely be back if I am out this way again. read more

Great value. This is not high end sushi. I like sashimi, so I do enjoy the large pieces of fish/seafood on my nigiri, but this is not necessarily the classic Japanese approach. Otherwise, the fish has always been fresh and tastes great. I no longer live in town and have only been getting takeout while passing through the area, and they always seem to throw in a few nigiri on the house when I make an order, which is a nice bonus! read more

This place has been my families go to for sushi for years. Honestly the service is iffy. Once they forgot to put our order through at all so we waited a long time to actually get our food but they apologized and we were light hearted and happy about the whole thing. We obviously like the food enough to overlook the flaws. We don't go that often but we like everything. The rolls, sashimi, nigiri, and tempura. I just tried the yakisoba which was also good. If you can overlook the (sometimes) poor service, this place is great! I always come on my birthday and we have a good time trying new things and some things we've already had before. If you need anything at the table don't be afraid to use the button on the table, especially when seated upstairs. They often give a free roll, but not every time, so don't expect it. All in all though they have good food, and that's really what it's about. read more

Been here twice now. Both times service was not great. They got my order wrong both times and weren't very attentive at listening while taking orders. Waitress seemed quite unhappy both times to be serving. Prices are at least 40% higher than your average sushi joint. They also seemed to be using tuna that wasn't very fresh smelling/tasting. They did however give a couple free items my first visit which is always nice. Decor is nice and definitely lends to a fancy sushi experience. Will I be back? No, there are many better alternatives. Overall not impressed. Ordered 4 rolls for takeout. Presentation looked good, but the crab was not good. Either too old or something. No-one could eat it. Veggies were soft and the rice was hard. Overall, this place is very, very good. Portions are considerable, the place looks nice, prices reasonable. The only problem is, sometimes the staff drops the ball a bit (putting the wrong order in from of the wrong person, giving us an extra bowl of soup) Thankfully, they always do their best to make it right and the occasional minor slip up is well worth it for the food. read more

This place isn't so bad. Coming from someone who isn't allergic to fish, I've never had a bad experience. There is a bit of a language barrier, but that's to be expected. There have been many times I place an order, only find a little something extra for me to munch on. Great ebi sonomono, good miso and fresh fish. For chilliwack, it's one of the best Japanese places.
