We had a lovely meal on Friday night. The drinks, starters , duck, and pork chop were excellent. The only disappointment of the night was when they got busy. Instead of asking us if we wanted another drink or dessert, they just handed us the bill. The bourbon list was great so I was hoping to try another as well as that apple dish. We will be going back . It's a restaurant that needs to be experienced more than once. We hope to try the desserts next time. read more

What an incredible find in the Shenandoah Valley! Our party of four had the most incredible meal we have had in a very long time. The bourbon book was amazing as were the cocktails. We had the corn fritters, Appalachian egg rolls and a shaved Brussels Sprout salad for appetizers. Our entrees included duck, rabbit, venison and beef. All were out of this world and not what we would usually order. We topped off the meal by sharing the flourless chocolate torte. I so wish I had listened more closely when our server introduced herself but I believe her name was Shannon. (My sincere apology if this is incorrect.) She provided the most helpful recommendations, encouragement and praise for all of our choices. This was the perfect combination of ambience, food and service to share with our son and daughter-in-law. While we live in OH and won't have the opportunity to be back in this area soon, they live in Arlington and are already planning their next trip back! Kudos to all at Vault & Cellar! read more

We were first time guests tonight. The atmosphere is quaint and rustic. Love the mismatched China and glass ware. The staff was not overly welcoming or helpful to someone who is not accustomed to bourbon. The options for drinks is overwhelming. I ordered the vault burger. My husband ordered shrimp and grits. It would have been nice to see more options on the menu for those of us who are not quite as adventurous. We never mind spending money on our date nights, but the price point here seemed a bit of an overreach. My burger served with homemade chips was delicious and the shrimp n' grits were also a hit with my husband. The portion size of the shrimp and grits was disappointing though..three small shrimp served with the grits was underwhelming and seemed more like an appetizer portion (especially for the price). I had an Old Fashion and The South Asian mule. Both were great, especially the mule. Would love to see more protein options offered that aren't so out of the box. I won't run back, but also would give them another try. Overall a good meal, lovely atmosphere, but left feeling like we over paid for what we had. read more

This was our first trip here, but it definitely won't be our last. We started off with the buttermilk biscuits and the Scotch-Irish eggs. We had our 8 and 11 year old with us, so we weren't sure what they would think, but they loved the appetizers. I was lucky to even get a bite of them because they wanted to eat them all. The eggs were amazing! I enjoyed two drinks from the bar -- also amazing. Our main courses got delayed for some reason. Thank goodness we had ordered appetizers or there may have been a mutiny from the kids. Our server was super accommodating and offered us drinks and dessert afterwards. When we finally got our main courses, we were all happy with our meals (although my son wished he had ordered his burger without the apple butter, but I thought it was tasty). My husband ate his shrimp and grits so quickly I barely got to try any. My catfish was yummy as were my daughter's egg rolls. We passed on the dessert because we're trying to cut back on sugar, so I can't provide feedback on that but based on how everything else tasted, I imagine the desserts are just as delicious. Delightful high end dining in the Shenandoah Valley. So much of the product is local, so many of the flavors are interesting. Because of schedules, we've only been twice on Sundays. We we're meandering our way back from Staunton area with our camper and wanted something that wasn't fast food. We saw a bbq sign at this exit.... gratefully they were closed as we ended up here for brunch last Sunday. Hubs had the breakfast burger and I had the Wild Boar Sausage gravy. Both were top notch. Everything was just delightful and creative. It was a little rainy but we sat on the patio as we had our small dog with us. They were so very accommodating to him as well. Even offered to make him a small dish. At first we said no, but then we asked for a scrambled egg for him. That was a whole other level of awesome! I also have been working on cutting back on booze for health reasons and I SO SO appreciated they had "adult", complex flavor profile AF cocktails!!! I ordered the "Sage Advice " and it did not disappoint!!!! I would give pretty much all my shoes and pocketbooks up for the recipe The water serving was so cute and clever and our waitress (Alli I think) was attentive and awesome! Service was reasonably quick and the whole experience was lovely! Food was high quality, fresh and so flavorful. Also, presentation was pretty!!! Definitely will be back when traveling up and down the 81 to our summer campground in VA!!!! read more

This place is incredible! Most delicious & inventive food (& beverages!) in the whole Winchester area. For those cruising up or down 81 & wanting to eat somewhere unique & upscale (without being stuffy), this is a great find! Literally minutes off of the highway. The building itself is beautifully restored; love the hidden speakeasy on the ground floor. We had an infant with us, so sat on the patio. It's also a lovely spot -- covered & pretty peaceful. The quality of the food cannot be overstated, but what really made our evening was the service. Our server, Ashley, was AMAZINGLY kind to us. It's anxiety-provoking for us as 1st time parents bringing our baby to any restaurant, as we don't want to interrupt anybody's evening with crying & fussing. Ashley proactively brought us a high chair & asked if he wanted anything to eat, & generally was really attentive getting our food to us speedily so that we could enjoy a break & then dash before baby fell apart. First off, they have exceptional service and I absolutely love some of the food. I would give this place 5 stars if it wasn't for an unfortunate meal experience. I got the worst food poisoning in a long time after eating some fish and Crepe. Granted this is why they leave warnings on undercook/uncook items like fish and raw eggs. It was unfortunate my 100 dollar meal turned out to give me a very unpleasant experience later. However, this was a one time thing and the other times the food was great. Which is why I'm giving 4 stars. I only mentioned the fish in crepes experience as a warning to be careful on uncook food as you should watch in any food establishment. Overall I do recommend this place and love the vibe and food selection. But watch out for that fish and crepe meal! read more

I've eaten at Vault & Cellar twice and each time the experience was terrific! First, I like that they are offering high quality food and drinks in a nice but unpretentious setting. I also like that they are doing something different - things like duck, rabbit, quail, greens, etc - things that pull in some regional cuisine items. Standouts for me have been: the egg rolls, the quail eggs, the biscuits, the fried catfish, the greens, the "kilt" salad, and of course the bourbon (hard to find a better bourbon selection within an hour of here). It's also nice that they are constantly adding new items to the menu so you can expect most of their standard stuff but will throw on something new to try. I'll definitely be back and hope the area appreciates what a great little place they have in Middletown, VA. read more

We heard so much about this place we thought we would check it out. Two Saturdays ago we arrived at 5:15 for dinner. We were asked if we had reservations and said no. We were immediately taken to the basement, which was a room about 20x20 if that. Small bar and one person working the bar. We were seated and ordered a cocktail and two starters. The kale egg rolls or what ever they were , were burnt on the outside or the oil was just old, and the quail eggs also burnt on the outside in what ever coating they used and oil. When the waitress finally came we asked about the cat fish and if it was fresh or frozen, she was confused and said no one has ever asked her that..we moved on to the Duck and asked what kind of duck they served since there is a variety of duck out there. She was even more flustered and said she did not know but would find out for us. (she never came back) . I ordered the CF and hubby the Boar. The Boar was four small pieces onto of bunt sweet potatoes, for the money very small portion. I ordered the catfish which I did not finish as it was very mushy and definitely not fresh.. When spending close to $100 on a meal we expected so much more, I would give the staff a D- the food a D . Sadly this was not the worst part. Seeing as we arrived at 5:15 I would have expect the place to be fairly clean...there was food and dirt on the floor downstairs and main eating and the kitchen from what we saw was absolutely filthy...NO Excuse for this! since the pandemic I have learned that the food and sanitation inspectors or none existing and restaurants are getting away with horrific conditions in which most inspectors would close them down for!
