Terrible customer service, I went to try and enjoy a meal with my family, my baby accidentally spilled food while she was eating and Brianna (I believe shes the managers daughter) was being very rude about the situation. I picked up as much as i could after my child but it seemed that Brianna wanted us to do a detail cleaning on our table/floor area. This does not feel like a family or kid friendly restaurant and I am extremely upset with the way we were treated, and not only that, a hair appeared on my food, and I didn't make a big fuss of it (which I should have, since it really seemed to bother Brianna the way my child eats) but they did nothing to try and help me in that situation, they seem to be worried about the wrong issue. read more

I went to college in Winchester, VA and this was my favorite spot for years. After many years away from my college town, I went back for the apple blossom festival and made sure my trip included stopping by Papermill Place. They have the most delicious breakfast in the area. I'm a sucker for their biscuits and gravy. My boyfriend got a breakfast platter and it was a huge serving. Ok I decided to drive out and was hungry and I stopped by around 10AM during the middle of the week and was surprised and happy to see that there were a good number of people coming into eat. The food is ok, however there needs to be some attention to toasted items like english muffins and toast. These items should not be hard and have butter in clumps. The scrambled eggs should be fluffy and not chopped and over cooked. The service is good. The kitchen is slow. The ambiance is not welcoming. The staff was told to not talk to the customers, other than to take an order (especially the regulars). I find this offensive. As a regular, i spend around $8k a year in the restaurant. I have heard the managers admonishing the wait staff on the serving floor several times. I also heard a manager talking about asking a customer to leave because they were sitting too long. As a customer we like to eat at places that we feel welcome. Work and dinning should not be a dreadful experience. read more

Looking for a home cooking type of restaurant, this place was suggested by a person at the Virginia welcome center. So my dining mate and I decided to have lunch there. A nice comfortable restaurant with reasonable priced menu. However I was disappointed with my meal. My go to lunch is chicken salad so I ordered a chicken salad plate with 2 sides. I chose green beans and coleslaw plus I ordered a separate side of onion rings. The onion rings were good but there is where it ended. I did not like the chicken salad which texture was very finely ground and bland tasting and no real chicken flavor . The coleslaw so sweet I could not eat it, not sweet and tangy just sugary tasting. The green beans tasty though. My dining mate ordered a tuna melt and a separate side of macaroni salad. He liked the tuna on rye said it was tasty but said the macaroni salad just ok and a little too sweet. Since we were passing through the area, on route home, I doubt I would return here again. Although the portions were good, plated nicely, reasonably priced and friendly service , what we ordered was nothing memorable for our palates. read more

I'm surprised to see so many negative views, but admit this was my first visit to this restaurant and it was just for breakfast, which was excellent. It was a rainy day on a Saturday morning and there was a crowd trying to get in around 11 am. It was hard to find a place to stand and didn't want to get soaked, so a bunch of people started crowding the tiny doorway- not a great idea in a COVID era. My wife and I were about the 4th people in line, and we had just beaten the crowd I guess because soon enough, that doorway was jammed. Some old lady kept getting right in my face. Neither of us had masks on and frankly, I'm not that worried about catching anything, but damn, this woman was two inches from my face and it was getting to me. I'd like to see this restaurant invest the few dollars it would take to get some kind of seating system that uses technology to keep people from crowding the small area, not only due to covid, but because you have to fight for your spot in line and make sure you memorize who was in front of you and I saw a lot of awkward situations taking place- some old geezer decided to just march to the front of the line and a lady and her little son had to tell him they were next, etc. Just give people a pager or even an online seating system- all the old people that ate their had phones, so they could participate. We were seated rather quickly as the servers, cashier, and cooks were really rolling people in and out and it reminded me of the diners I see back in my hometown in NY. Just a team of people working together to get their customers seated, fed, and paid up. They all did a great job. My wife and I both had breakfast- she had French toast, hash browns and fruit I think, and I had pancakes, eggs, hash browns, and sausage. Our food was great- the French toast was not the huge, super thick bread that some places think is good but I don't, it was good old fashioned French toasted and it tasted great. The hash browns, I always prefer them over home fries, and PP is the rare place that offers both, were also very good. The thing that stood out to me were the pancakes as they were really, really, excellent in my opinion. They were light, fluffy, cooked perfectly and they had a great taste. I could have eaten another stack for sure and I'd drive the hour to Winchester just to have breakfast at PP again. Our waitress was a pro, a skinny little older woman who hustled her tail off and never forgot a thing, never stopped moving, yet found a way to be extremely friendly. She was awesome. The cashier who rang us up (a dedicated cashier was a very good idea) was friendly and fast. We'll be back one of these days! Papermill Place has the RUDEST manager I have EVER met. I took a friend there for lunch. My friend works very close to Papermill Place and only has 45 minutes for lunch. We ordered a tuna, and chicken salad sandwiches. After about 20 minutes I went to the counter as I didn't see our waitress to ask how long it would be as we were on a limited lunch break. The person at counter asked where I was sitting and I pointed to it. The Manager proceeds to come to our table with a check in hand barking at me, "Your order has only been in the kitchen for 10 minutes and we are busy!" Yes, there were a few tables of people maybe 8 tables of people with at least 5 wait staff. As we were leaving, I saw the Manager and told her, "You were rude." Needed to be in Winchester to get a windshield replaced at Winchester auto glass. The receptionist recommended the Papermill for breakfast while I wait.... "it's only a block down" So after a pleasant walk, I make it into the Papermill and am greeted with a smile, and a "go ahead and seat your self" at which point I noticed the place is full and I'll be taking a seat at the counter, where a great mix of men are seated from coat and tie , to the Sheetrock worker sitting next to me. Let me tell you now this is not foo foo coffee and scones! This is Black coffee, real eggs, and no kidding hash and pancakes! All of which you can sit at the counter and watch being made! I will say the locals with special dietary needs can still get some egg whites and sliced tomatoes. No questions asked. I felt at home, it was clean, busy, and other than the occasional phone calls for the gentlemen getting the day started, it was all conversation with strangers, which turned into breaking bread with friends. I was informed that the supervisor/ owner prohibited seating unless all parties are inside. My daughter and I were hungry, so I told my son I'd order him his food to go. I informed the waitress that sat us that we'd only be a party of two. I heard the supervisor/owner reprimanding the waitress who sat us, thinking we broke the rule. The prices have increased, which is expected. Our food wasn't like it used to be, portions are smaller and unseasoned food. I asked if they are under new management and they are not. We found this place while looking for a place to ride on a pretty Saturday in February. My buddy had seen it listed in one of those 30 places to eat in Virginia lists. I've been to many places to eat in Virginia, and I guess if I had to list 30 places, I'd put it on the list. And, in an area with tons of chain spots, it is a nice local color place. Stopped for breakfast while on vacation. It was a really excellent meal. The breakfast menu is extensive and I choose the eggs, corn beef hash (not too salty and meat was fresh and tender) and potato combo. My husband chose the pancakes. The biscuits were fresh and fluffy and sausage gravy was a little gooey but tasted fine. Everything was delicious. Our waitress, Holly, was very busy but did a great job. Staff is masked and there are Plexi-glass booth dividers between booths. Nice that they care. Definitely on my "return to" list. read more
