Stopped here to grab some breakfast before hitting the road for the long drive home. We just wanted a couple of bagels and some coffee, thought it would only take a few minutes but luckily we didn't have any coins smaller than quarters for the parking meter or we would have run out of time waiting. Walked in to the very small space and were told we needed to order online, so we got out our phones and scanned one of the many QR code signs posted on every surface anordered - two bagels, one with cream cheese and the other with butter. He confirmed he received the orders immediately- even before the payment had gone through. That seemed like a good sign. We waited and watched while he made salads and other orders for people who presumably ordered online before us, but didn't come in to pick up while we were there. Eventually he made our bagels, put them in cardboard baskets, covered them with aluminum foil (not sure why we needed that cardboard waste -- would have been happy with my bagel just wrapped in foil), covered them with paper towels, put them each in separate paper bags, and placed them on the counter while calling our names (even though we were the only people in the place and he had confirmed he knew who we were when he received the order). We took the bagels and walked across the street and got our coffees from the cute cat cafe with the friendly staff. Hit the road, and pulled out our bagels in the car. First bite was so bad that I tossed the rest of the bagel back in the bag... it was so crunchy it was more of a thick bagel chip, and shards of bagel stuck between my teeth like splinters. Certainly one-of-a-kind, I've never had another bagel like it. About 10 miles later I was hungry enough to get the bagel out and try again... this time I kneaded it through the aluminum foil a bit to bread it up first. It was still very crunchy and sharp, but there were some softer bits toward the middle. There wasn't much flavor, except where it was drenched in butter (and those bites tasted like butter, which isn't a bad taste I guess). TLDR, if you want bagels in Winchester WV skip this place and go to Sclafani's. read more

My boyfriend is a frequent flyer here so when I visited he insisted, which is not hard because I LOVE bagels. The owner runs the place by himself in the heart of downtown. The inside gives an older coffee shop vibe and very family owned. The owner is incredibly kind and recognizes everyone that stops by. They have regular and everything bagels and you can get a breakfast sandwich with egg, cheese, bacon or sausage. The portion is huge and it's delicious. The everything bagel is full of flavor and super fluffy but also a layer of crisp. I had the pizza bagel both mornings we came and it was phenomenal. I still think about it and can't wait to come back. The portion is perfect and it also comes on an everything bagel. They also have a lox bagel and you can get bagels to go. This is the best bagel in the area. They are homemade and delicious. There are only plain and everything bagels to choose from and the only cream cheese flavor is "regular". There are breakfast sandwiches and he does make one with lox and these are also excellent. Coffee is pretty good too. Once you get the process of ordering from your phone it's very simple. I ordered online after reading the yelp reviews and seeing the signs on the window. I was a little surprised at how long it took for a bagel with cream cheese, even after I ordered online. Especially since I was standing around inside with my boss for about 10 minutes after ordering when I got a text saying 8 more minutes, at which point my boss realized he hadn't ordered and put in an order for the same thing I did and he got his before me! I wasn't in a rush or anything, so no harm, though know you'll wait. There was only one person working the counter and taking walk in orders. Tried this spot for the first time this morning and was NOT disappointed. Been living in Long Beach California for 6 years and I have never tasted a bagel so flavorful....delicious!! Ordered online (super easy platform to use) and then went in to pay. Met by a busy waiting area and an amazing smell of bagels. We waited a few min in the shop and then paid. There was just one person working there, Lenny. He was also the guy working as the cashier and barista! He's a very busy man, but still had the time to give us a smile, ask us how our day was, and thanked us for coming. While the service was great - my whole reason for coming was the bagels...and those were truly the star of the show. Both my husband and I ordered the breakfast bagel on an everything bagel. I'm not a fan of eggs, so I omitted that and it seems as if I was just given more bacon (thank you!). This was, hands down, the best bagel ever. It was an hour drive from us - but totally worth it. We just recently moved into the area. In my search for our regular bagel place to shop from, I decided to try from Big L's Bagels in the heart of Winchester. For a start, to find an easily available parking spot around is pain in the neck. Oh, well, thats part of being in the city center. Then, the store itself does not feel very welcoming, looks dark, cramped, and they only take online orders, which is a very unusual business model. Once the order is placed, it takes almost around 25-30 mins to get it ready: only one person working there on a busy weekend day. As a note, I ordered just bagels to go with a tub of cream cheese. There were no prices online or anywhere visible. Did they remove them on purpose or was there a glitch? One never knows... The amount I paid for it was a RIP-OFF big time: for the same price, I purchased the same amount of bagels from another business in the area (that were tasty) + three tubs of cream cheese vs from this place, I got smth that looked nothing like bagels (more like uncooked Kaiser Rolls pretending to look like everything bagels) + only one tub of cream cheese. Upon bringing that bagels imitation back home, my family refused to eat them as they looked suspicious to them. I decided to give those "Kaiser Rolls pretending to be bagels" a chance, and toasted them thoroughly. Used cream cheese on top, and, after two bites, I didn't wish to proceed with my experiment: they tasted pretty raw inside, bad sour dough taste, and could have possible given me indigestion. If there was a certain way to bring those things to life, the lady working at the shop that day could have given me an advice. To sum it up, miserable parking situation, unwelcoming facility, online-only ordering, long wait time, bad food quality, and overpriced. That's an opinion from my unfortunate experience. The bagels are bready, tightly knotted, and well seasoned. Coffee is "Self Serve Drip, No Decaf". Longer story: If you've ever read The Dresden Files and recall Mac from McAnally's Pub, this owner could be that guy and this bagel place could be that pub. The walls are covered in various pictures for sale, memorabilia, and random items, most of the seating is blocked off (thank you COVID...), and while there are some bar stools near a window, it's clear no one stays to eat. An eclectic group of people came through as I was waiting for my order - an older man with a thick English accent picking up an order for 12 people, a group of still slightly hungover college students, and a dad and young daughter. Everyone was a repeat customer except for me. Everyone had placed an online order at least 20 minutes before walking through the doors. I anticipated ordering at the counter, but the owner asked me to place one online so I could get in the digital line. Prices were not listed anywhere I could find out, but I was on a mission for a lox bagel so I didn't really care. "When are you not busy?" I asked while grabbing my order, hoping to find a time I could come back and ask him about where all this (gesturing wildly to everything) came from and what led to this point in his life. He shot back "What's the point of coming in if I'm not busy?" Fair point. I checked my bag for napkins and was on my way. Mission accomplished. The business description is "We're are unique bc we make everything we serve. The bagels are hand rolled daily and everything is served w a little bit love." And I'd say that's exactly what you get in terms of personality, style, and food. About the food? Each bagel is wrapped in a small paper tray, then wrapped in foil, and put in a bag with some napkins. The bagels are more on the bready side with a tight crumb and more soft than chewy. Most ingredients were thickly cut. For example the red onion were sliced were about 1/4" thick, as was the smoked salmon. The cream cheese was fresh and slathered on. I stumbled upon this bagel shop and to my surprise, they are in fact the best bagels around! The service/ordering by text is a bit unconventional, but super easy for ordering. Do visit their website before you actually visit the establishment. They offer two kinds of baked rolls. One is plain and one has ET seasoning. The "bagel" is a dense braided cousin of a Kaiser roll, but except it to be super doughy. They have limited topping offerings so don't ask for something not explicitly listed on their website, the staff will ask you if you even bother to look at their website. Clearly we didn't. There was a hint of a crunch but you will not find an authentic bagel blister or a authentic bagel dough flavor. Maybe a small town kind of thing but if you are visiting from a city with real bagels, this is not the place for you. Yummmmm Tried this place out recently. Was looking for a quick breakfast spot and this place delivered! I ordered the Main Event online and waited for confirmation to go inside and pick it up. I'm assuming these are safety restrictions due to COVID. The bagel was soft and tasty, the toasted cheese on the edges was amazing! It was loaded with bacon and even though I'm not a big egg person, the egg was on point. The cheese was perfectly melted. Unfortunately I walked into this little bagel shop as I was leaving town, I needed a cup of good coffee after days of watery garbage or Keurig and I was getting cranky. I was bummed that the coffee tank only filled my cup halfway but the very helpful owner topped me off with 2 shots of espresso and really made my day. I've gotten bagels here twice. Second time I ordered 'em drunk online at like 2 am. Got up dying for coffee and got a surprise text around 8 saying "bagels?" I was like "yup". The response was "9 minutes". I was all "I'll be there in ten" The salmon "doctor P" I got w bacon (I was drunk ordering, Lenny called it surf n turf) was a revelation. I'll admit, I'm a snob when it comes to elite bagels, and when my brother recommended this place, I was a bit reluctant to go out of my way to come here. Living so close to Manhattan my entire life, I'm admittedly spoiled by being only a short drive away from places like Russ & Daughters, Tompkins, Barney Greengrass, Best Bagels and so on. After stopping at Steamy's on my way home, I have to add this place to the list. The Main Event bagel was a thing of beauty, and in my sole experience here, Lenny (the owner and chef), couldn't have been nicer. He even texted to let me know the ETA of when the bagel would be ready! I must conclude this review, by saying I've seen some negative reviews here from people who clearly don't yelp often, judging by their meager amount of reviews. People who CLEARLY set up an account to trash a place for their allegedly bad experience here, don't deserve a voice on this platform. During these trying times (COVID) the least we can do is see if an establishment has a website so we can be sure of the ordering process, or even if the place is still operating. Something must have happened to this place. Let's blame it on Sunday morning and Corona. I walked in, the chef was talking to two people. They left. He asked me to go outside and order from their digital menu (not unusual these days in this part of the world). The menu had three options. I chose a bagel and cream cheese. No options to customize before entering my information for the order. So how do I do that? And what about a coffee? I walked back in and had to interrupt the busy chef. I asked about coffee for my order and he says, "just put it in the notes" (friendly he isn't. He hadn't been this morning). Never mind, I thought. I'll go elsewhere. Contrary to what a lot of these reviews say, the owner was completely professional and took our orders and let us know the wait time, no attitude, no rudeness, just "what would you like? Okay, that'll be 15 minutes". We got the Main Event (sub sausage and add avocado) and the Dr. P. Hands down the best breakfast sandwiches we've ever had.
