I took my BMW to Vaughan's place in 2015 to get some work done on it as it had failed emissions a couple of times and I wasn't sure of what I was doing, I only had the car in my posession for a couple of months and didn't really have the time myself to look into things and do the research. So I decided to try to save some time being a college student and working fulltime, and was willing to spend a lot of money to have someone else look into my vehicle's issues. I would learn from forums and other tech info available in the meantime if it was something that took less than 4 hours, I would attempt to do it myself. So me knowing very little about the car I gave Vaughan a call on a friends recommendation as they had said that he would work on the older models E3-E30. So I was very excited to have someone that had classic BMW experience inspect my car, I brought Vaughan my car as it was having a random chime play in the vehicle and when attempting to start the car the horn would go off as well as not start properly or would stall out and misfire like crazy. The next day Vaughan called me and informed me that my OBC needed to be replaced as my old one was bad and that would stop the chiming bell in the car and my car would stop stalling out and missing. He also informed me that the chiming and horn honking was an "after-market alarm system" that needed to be removed from the car and the wires needed to be grounded. I agreed to work to be done and Vaughan is an honest man, right? Well I pay for my car and come pick it up with a friend as I have had problems with it in the past, Vaughan shows me the "alarm system" and I'm clueless as to what it is, however something doesn't quite sit right as I was inspecting the object that was removed. The part read on the back machine embossed, "low switch speed adjustment" on it and a "sensitivity adjustment" on it and is also branded as a "Dana Corp." product. I questioned him about it and he informed me that "it was definitely an aftermarket alarm system and nothing else." My tags were expiring soon and I wanted to get Vaughan's opinion on what I should do, he informed me to get to a testing sight have them test and bring it back if there are problems, a reasonable response. The next day I took my car to emissions with my car sputtering stalling and misfiring I brought it to emissions and I failed in the epic sort of way that my car was putting out 5X NOx allowed which is expected with a huge misfire. I went and started doing research; made some phone calls to a friend that own a similar year and model that worked on his car own car. From what he was able to tell me and what I was able to find online the misfiring and failing emissions was more than likely that the car had a huge vacuum leak. So I bring the car back and Vaughan and ask him to check my vacuum lines, and he comes back to me the next day and recommends some work, O2 sensor and cat replacement. When I asked if he checked the vacuum lines like I had asked and he said he replaced a fuel recovery hose located in the trunk and said that the others "were fine and there was nothing wrong with them." So I once again trusted his judgement and get the other work finished no problem, the exhaust mechanic that Vaughan recommended was the best in the area, I would definitely bring my car to him again, beautiful wielding work. I then brought my car to emissions and it failed again. Okay so something is missing here is what I thought to myself, I decided to not bring the car to Vaughan's this time around and go it alone. So I get to work and disassemble the entire top side of the Vehicle find 5 vacuum leaks in total, 2 coming from the intake boot of the vehicle and 3 lines disconnected from the underside of the intake plenum and a rotten, broken vacuum line on the charcoal canister that captures the unburnt fuel fumes. At this point I was on a time crunch and my apartment complex was threatening to tow the car as it had expired tags for the month. I was able to order all new vacuum lines and reconnect everything and the car ran beautifly from there on out. If the vacuum lines were inspect like I had asked I would not have had to waste all that time and money and he would have had more money in his pocket had he checked. I had then called Vaughan and info and vaughan gave me a response of "glad you got your car fixed, but one thing is for certain emissions suck" was all he said and didn't take any ownership on not fixing my vehicle, so much for honesty and integrity... Didn't admit fault to not checking a thing. Also the "aftermarket alarm system" was a cruise control module made by Dana Corp, all it took was a google search and a phone call. Dana Corp. They informed me that it was indeed an after-market product made by them, and confirmed it was a cruise control module. So now I have no cruise control and wasted a lot of time and few hundred $... but hey I passed emissions right? read more

Alex is the bomb, he took my old 85 in even though he only takes 88 and up, he was willing to help me out, I had just about given up going to a mechanic at that point; I was fixing things that didn't need to be fixed or things that did need to be fixed weren't being done, and I'm glad I finally found a mechanic I can trust. He tries his best to help you out and is really reasonable and tries to find the best parts for you, never overcharges you (gave me a an OBC for halve list price) and is always willing to give advice on how to do something to prevent a return on the same problem. Let me preface this with the fact that I wanted to like this place because I am getting too old to do my own repairs and I don't desire to do a clutch or subframe bushing job in my garage. So, at the recommendation of an Alex faithful I gave him a call. I was reassured multiple times that everything would go as planned so I agreed to drop the car off for a job that was well over $1k in labor alone. When I called to check on the car's progress I discovered that he had done a differential fluid change after I told him that I no longer needed it done (before even taking the car in). I had just done it myself, a month prior. Turns out that he was using an old email as his scope of work, despite my call to confirm the scope the day before I dropped the car off. When I got there to pay, he was going to charge me for it. We worked that out so we are OK there, but it shouldn't have even been on the bill. Fast forward to a day later when I noticed a clunking coming from underneath the car. The noise sounded familiar because I had just resolved that issue by replacing the exhaust hanger bushings on the car right before it went to Alex for the clutch and subframe bushings. When I finally got time to get under the car and see if the exhaust just needed adjustment, I noticed a rather startling thing. The brand new RED bushings that I had just installed were gone and, in their place, were used/cracked/worn BLACK bushings (pic). I was livid. After I calmed down and ran all possible scenarios as to why that would have happened I emailed Alex and asked him about it (in a very respectful manner). I included pictures and let him know that I had just installed the red bushings before the service to cure the exhaust clunking on the support brace, due to old bushings collapsing on themselves. He called me a few days later and nicely told me that there is no reason for him to remove them and I was SOL... Really? From our conversation, the most he was willing to do was adjust the current bushings to see if that fixed the clunking. Not even willing to entertain the idea that the bushings may have been misplaced, broken or to look around the shop or ask his shop assistant about them. So, let me get this straight; I just paid you a huge sum of money (that was not subjected to credit card fees either, so even more net $$) and you won't even investigate the possibility of the customer being right? I have receipts and records for them being purchased and installed, as well as the old parts sitting on my desk; the burden of proof is not on me at this point. I have decided to replace these, again, on my own dollar and move on from this. Sadly for you, Alex, the BMWCCA members that regularly approach me for recommendations will be sent elsewhere and you won't be doing my thermostat job, nor anything else for me. I have also redacted my recommendations already made to other individuals before this situation developed. To make matters worse, I developed a nasty vibration/buzzing shortly after the conversation, so back under the car I went to discover that both bolts within the exhaust brace, where it connects to the transmission housing, were halfway backed out (pic). I also found that the cabin air filter housing had been handled without care and broken (pic) as well as the cabin air filter reinstalled upside down (pic; there are clearly labeled arrows on the filter) during the clutch bleeding. I also re-bled the clutch as there was air in the system that caused pedal inconsistency. Bottom line; I looked to you to do the right thing (as I am told that you are a very honest individual) and you just washed your hands of it and walked away. I am a very reasonable and friendly person and I am particular about my cars and the quality of work that goes into them. I expected much more from you and, sadly, I was let down over less than $40 in retail parts and sloppy issues. It is the service and integrity that makes the difference and I hope that my experience was the outlier. Consumers, please do not hesitate to contact me if you would like to discuss my experience further (I've documented everything). 3/16/2016 UPDATE: I would like to report additional details on this experience. As the new clutch wore-in and I drove the car more and more I noticed that the clutch pedal developed a rather odd springback and notchiness. So, under the dash I went to check components. Everything looked OK so under the car I went, where I found that the slave cylinder had been reinstalled with the pushrod cocked slightly which caused it to actuate in a non-linear fashion. I also noticed that the pushrod had been greased (that's a no-no). Once I cleaned it up, lubed the TIP ONLY and reinstalled, the clutch performs as it should. Unfortunately, the damage has already been done to my slave cylinder (sratches/gouging in the pushrod) from actuating off-axis. This now needs to be replaced and that also requires the master cylinder to be done. HEED MY ADVICE...BEWARE! read more
