As always, I was 10- star happy with my haircut with Jenny (have been a client for over 15 years) and partial highlights with Naomi, who did my color for the first time. Naomi and her assistant Coco were very professional, friendly and kind! My color turned out perfectly! The vibe is upscale but not intimidating or snobby - just comfortably concierge level treatment is what you can expect. So I've been in search of a new hair stylist for a few months. I've tried a couple of places that just weren't a good fit. Van Michael's in Sandy Springs is just what I have been looking for!!! The structure it's self is neat and organized. The upstairs is for cuts and the downstairs is for color. I personally love that color is downstairs because minimizes the amount of people who see looking like a space alien with all the fools in my hair!!:) I had no wait time! My appointment was at 7pm and my stylist was ready right at 7pm sharp! The stylist are at different price points depending on if they are "New Talents" or veterans. I went to Chris (who is so fun and friendly). He's a vet and the cost of my cut was $80. Also, I was out in about an hour, which is great!! I went from shoulder length hair to a bob. So an hour was a great time! I received a short head and neck massage prior to my cut. After a long day at work it was just what the doctor ordered! Overall, I left feeling relaxed and excited to show off my new do! I would def recommend this place!! read more

DON'T BE FOOLED!!! I had been a Client of Van Michael Salon, until I found out many unethical things went on. Not to mention, you think you're getting color that actually last...well don't be fooled again, this business intentionally does not provide Color Services that last...The Horrible Lights makes your hair appear so unrealistic and not truly what it will appear in all light, daylight evening etc. Let me add, how the lack of cleanliness lacks at Van and Michael's Salon. Dirty Brushes, combs and the Sterilization is quite unsanitary. I have experienced this many times. What is so sad is, it's let's see how many heads we can do , because this place of business is all about money. Many unprofessional things go on at this place of business. Including lies and accusations. For example if you have a beautiful head of hair, which takes lot's of TLC, Van & Michael employees are trained and or (it takes too long) I might add if you have a redo or want glaze, they will create a fuss read more

1st time client. My stylist was Elle. She took her time and did a beautiful job. She was very friendly and easy to talk too. She did my hair exactly the way I wanted it done! When I made the made the appointment I specifically asked for the $35 haircut because I simply just wanted two inches cut off. They confirmed that was going to be the price of my haircut When I went to check out they said I owed $55. I refused and said I was paying $35. I didn't appreciate the misunderstanding. My haircut did last 2 hours. Anyways I'd highly recommend Elle. She did an amazing job!!!!! read more

I called around 4:15pm and got an appointment for 5pm. All I needed was a cut that wouldn't drive me insane when I'm styling it in the morning. The stylist I was assigned did a FANTASTIC job of listening to my wants and needs. He even asked about my styling routine. And when I told him I wanted it thinned out, he didn't balk or look at me like I'm crazy like most stylists do. We talked about the exact length I wanted and I was pleasantly surprised that- in fact- my style did end up at that length (not shorter, like I usually end up getting with other stylists). This location is a lot more inviting than the Buckhead one, which I've only been to once before. Perhaps it's because I went on a Sunday evening, but it felt like a real salon whereas at the Buckhead location I felt like I was being herded like cattle. So now I'm actually considering driving to Sandy Springs every time I want my hair cut. Hmmmm... read more

I called to get service for a flat iron and it took twenty minutes just to find out they were basically only available for a different day, truthfully I think they are afraid of working with "curly" hair. I have been going to Van Michael's in Sandy Springs for 5 years. Today for the 4th time in a year my color appointment was cancelled. We all know how difficult it is to get a hair appointment in December. A message was left telling me my colorist, who does an Amazing job on my color, had to cancel my appointment. I HAD MADE THE APPOINTMENT TWO MONTHS IN ADVANCE. There was no attempt made to ask or suggest another colorist. I AM DONE WITH VAN MICHAELS. I called a manager I think her name was Sarah, told her what was going on and she could have cared less. I said why was I not offered another appointment? Her response we dont have any today, but still did not say let me see what I can do to get u in this week. Did not offer any kind of compensation, you have to pay for your services she said when I asked about some kind of compensation for having my service cancelled yet again. I will NEVER return to Van Michael's at any location they don't care about their clients . Van Michael's has lost a client of 5 years. SO DISAPPOINTING. UPDATE: I have heard nothing from Van Michael's no comment no call no follow up. That says it all. They do not care about their customers. I had the worst haircut of my life at this place. I was going from a short bob to a long pixie and the guy completely butchered it. He seemed confident and I had had him trim my hair a couple months earlier which he was fine at doing. He had no clue at all how to cut a pixie He really had no business accepting the job. I told him it was the worst haircut I'd ever had when I was done and I didn't charge me and they sent me to a more experienced stylist at a different location to fix it. I think this stylists at this chain are trained to do specific cuts and they're not very good at making those cuts work for individuals. read more

Today was my first time at the Sandy Springs location. I can accept the 4.5 hours of waiting for my daughter's hair (had to redo bc first stylist didn't use enough foils). I can accept that my daughter left with her hair wet because we couldn't wait the 5th hour to finish the treatment which we paid for. I can even accept the $600 spent today for our 2 treatments. However, I cannot accept that there was no "I'm sorry" or any sign of concern for customer satisfaction. I made an appointment for keratin at 3:00. I arrived 20 minutes early because i had never been and wanted to get the feel for the salon. I was checked in, temp checked and told to sit and wait. There were as many as 15 people in the front of salon where i was waiting between stylists, customers at any one time. My stylist finally appeared at 3:40. He was 40 minutes late, No apology or explanation given. I was expecting a keratin product and service commensurate with the $300.00 price, $200.00 of which was pre paid at the time i booked the service. I was totally disappointed by both the product and the service. I have been getting keratin for 10 years and never paid more than $200.00 but was willing to go to a superior salon and pay for a superior product. I left the salon at 6:00 after being there 3 hrs and 20 minutes with dull, dry, sticky hair. My stylist was nice but did a terrible job from start to finish. read more

I went to the Sandy Springs location and visited the new talents for a cut. My stylist was Amber, who was very nice and seemed like she knew what she was doing. We talked a while about what I wanted, I have long curly hair and a great base cut so all I really needed was for her to trim off my dead ends and shape up my layers. Instead of doing what we talked about she completely butchered my hair, cut about 4 inches off the bottom and did a horrible job with the layers, the cut I ended up with is completely rectangular which does not work with curly hair. I am going to see a different stylist today at the Buckhead location and hopefully he can fix it. Overall, my haircut experience (besides the cut) was great, the people were nice and everything but the haircut itself was fine. However, I would much rather deal with a rude staff or a long waiting time if the stylist knew how to cut my hair. I want to give Amber the benefit of the doubt that she is a good stylist, but if you have curly hair you're better off with someone else. Needless to say, I won't be going back. read more

I've been going to Van Michael Talents for 20yrs. to all their locations. Absolutely never any complaints. I phoned this week to book an appointment and was told I would need extra time even though it was a basic hair cut nothing out of the ordinary (no thick hair, no extensions etc.). The charge being $75. When I questioned the reason "because I was new to the stylist". Well New Talents are trainees and eventually graduate. So more than likely I will get a new stylist for all my visits. "That doesn't matter". In the past I have never had to pay for extra time please look at my history. "Yes you have extra time needed to all the visits you have come to". I have never been told, the stylist never took extra time, and the cost did not reflect extra time needed. I've been going to Van Michael's Sandy Springs location for almost as long as I've lived in GA, which is four years. I usually see people at the New Talents portion of the salon, where newer stylists and colorists are in training. I've been going there long enough that my regular colorist, Chrissy, is now over on the Van Michael side. The price difference is not a huge deal for me because Chrissy never lets me down. She's patient and a good listener. I always do red, but I've done everything from cherry bomb to dark auburn, bordering on brown. I was laid off last year and told her I needed a color that would last a REALLY long time because I wasn't sure when I'd be able to see her again. She mixed up a shade that was about halfway between the red I usually use and my natural color (dark blonde). It faded out so nicely and naturally, I actually asked her to do it again once I had the money to come back! Now that it's summer, I'm back to a brighter shade again. My luck hasn't been as good with haircuts. Don't get me wrong: they're always awesome. My problem is that all the people I've liked have left! That's the risk you run when you visit a teaching salon, unfortunately. My last regular stylist was Sean, and he was AMAZING. Then he moved to the Virginia Highlands location. I loved Sean, but I go to the Sandy Spring salon because it's a stone's throw from my home and workplace. Virginia Highlands is not convenient for me. Hopefully I'll be able to update my review in a few months when I find another great stylist... and hopefully they won't leave for another location before I get the chance to write the review. ;) read more

I've been going here for years. My stylist is Chris Barrett and he is awesome! Chris takes notes each and every time he cuts my hair, so he knows how we last styled it and what we're trying to accomplish. I always get compliments on my haircuts and never leave with a bad cut. I recommended him to one of my friend's and she said it was the best hair cut she ever had. I'm almost hesitant to recommend him, as I don't want to make my scheduling difficult ;) read more

I went to this salon when I had a color disaster. The staff booked me with Danielle. That was well over a year ago, and I never let anyone else color my hair. The staff are always friendly and I always recieve a text and phone call reminder that I have an appointment. Danielle's assistants are always cheerful and do a wonderful job styling my hair afterwards. I cannot express how wonderful Danielle has been with my hair and I would recommend her to anyone, especially someone with thin and damaged hair like mine. The only downside is that everyone else seems to have discovered that she is so amazing and it is hard to get an appointment with her! Book in advance. DON'T MISS ! I moved from Manhattan , so I was "spoiled " by top work there. And I had my hair styled and colored in London, for years, so when I moved to Atlanta, I panicked, until I found Van Michaels in Sandy Springs where I discovered hair stylist, Jamison and colorists Sadie! Both are exceptional . My husband also has his hair cut by Jamison - upscale, and hip. I have never had better hair color . Jamison & Sadie are dynamos. Other hair cuts are yawners, compared to Jamison's work, and other hair colorists don't leave my hair looking "A-List". Both Jamison and Sadie are down to earth, true professionals. Oh. Henson also a colorist who's work I recommend must be mentioned. In addition, the management at this wonderful salon is top notch. read more

I came to Van Michael for (among other things when I'm in town over the years) hair and makeup for my wedding. I cannot speak highly enough to the experience I had! Jenny did my hair, and it was perfect. I had a trial with her a couple of months before the wedding, and while it was beautiful, it started hurting and falling apart a few hours after I left the salon. As I live out of town and wouldn't get another chance to see her until, literally, my wedding day, I was pretty nervous I'd have a hair disaster. But when I met with her the day of my wedding, she could not have made it more perfect. First, she cleared out my family and gave me a much-needed hour of pampering. Second, I described my issues with the hair trial, and she totally solved every one. My hair looked perfect for 12 hours, and I never felt a single hair pin. If you have a LOT of curly, thick hair, and need a wedding up-do, Jenny is your girl. I also worked with Laura on my (and my bridesmaids) makeup. She is so sweet and calming. I am not a big makeup wearer, and she gave me a face that was pretty, flawless, and felt like nothing. I could have slept in that makeup and woken up looking basically perfect. One tip-- because they have to use disposable mascara wands, if you want a big eyelash look, bring your own mascara! She'll apply it, but you'll have the benefit of the fancy brush. My eyelashes still looked amazing, though. Because we had a very teeny wedding party, we had our appointments in the salon, which was actually really fun and efficient. I only get my hair cut every 12-15 months, so I don't have a lot of experiences in salons to compare and contrast different places. I don't color my hair, rarely dry it, don't really use product, and try to shampoo only every 2-3 days. I'm LOW maintenance when I come to hair. But I've been loyal to Van Michael, especially New Talents, for at least a decade. I appreciate that as someone who doesn't really do salons, every stylist I've seen has been respectful, listening to what I want, realizing that I'm not going to put a lot of effort into my do, not trying too hard to upsell me on product, and overall make it a relaxing and enjoyable experience. Oh I hate doing this but my poor teenager just got BUTCHERED. My child cut her own hair- our normal stylist at paces ferry location was busy so we made an spot at sandy springs with Spencer. When she went in it was just a trim up we needed - but when she was done she has NO HAIR in the front!!!??? How do you chop off someone's bangs so far short that it looks like he literally took her bangs and chopped them off at her FOREHEAD. This is gonna take months to grow out. She is devastated. This is the absolute worst haircut we've ever had in our lives. She did a better job herself with the kitchen scissors. She's been crying for days. Ugh! read more
