After reading a bunch of the reviews on Yelp, I gave them a try for lunch and got the #18. It was good, but not amazing. The broth wasn't very flavorful and didn't have many spices in it like I'm use to. They also didn't have any short of condiments on the table to dress it up with. The soup was really lacking in salt but there was no fish sauce on the table to correct this with. They also didn't give you very many greens to put in the soup, just a small plate of spouts and some lettuce (where is the basil and cilantro? I mean, lettuce? Really?) THe place was very clean, bright, great service, but the soup was boring with not enough dressings. I prefer Kim Longs. read more

I've had my share of Vietnamese food... From Vancouver to Phoenix to Seattle to Southern/ Northern California even including homemade. This was the best I've ever had. It tastes like homemade but in the convenience of a restaurant! You can really tell love and care went into the preparation of the food. The bun bo hue (Van Loi special) was so flavourful and perfectly spicy. Goi cuon (shrimp and pork spring rolls with peanut sauce) were something I've never seen or ate before but my mind was blown! Who would have thought to wrap an egg roll with a spring roll?!? Amazing! Can't wait to come back and try more of the menu! read more

If you have not tried Vietnamese food you are missing out. I would recommend starting with the PHO and shrimp spring roll with peanut sauce. Closest thing to the PHO in California. Service is good and friendly. Clean establishment. Definitely check out. read more

My wife and I went to Van Loi yesterday after having read the other Yelp reviews. And they're right! It's real Vietnamese food! My wife ordered the pho, but ended up not too happy with it, because she felt the broth was too "fatty," while I had ordered the bun, with grilled pork and egg rolls and shrimp. Since I LOVE fat, we traded and, in fact, I enjoyed the pho more than I normally do, precisely because of the fat! My wife was happy with the bun, and she thought that the egg rolls were par excellence. Pretty good. I had the yellow curry chicken rice bowl and it was pretty spicy. Not the best yellow curry but I liked it and this place deserves another visit. I love pho so I want to try that here. Friendly staff, fast service, and good food. Prices run a little on the high side from what I could tell compared to other Vietnamese restaurants, starting around 9 and going up from there. Initially was a little weary about it sort of reminded me of a cleaner version of an old restaurant in the Middle East I used to frequent. Menu was decent and for someone like me who likes pictures of new foods for visualization they had a wonderful photo album that corresponded with the menu. I ordered an iced espresso and a side of wanton soup. The espresso was wonderful as was the soup. And I had the #21 - Assorted for the main a fried noodle soup with an assortment of pork, shrimp, and vegetables. Very good overall for what they have. I've been to Van Loi a few dozen times over the years and the quality and freshness of the food never changes. The eggrolls are rolled fresh to order and they are SO YUMMY in the #34 Grilled Pork, Shrimp & Egg Rolls Vermicelli Noodle W/ Vietnamese Sauce. For being open 11 years now, they keep doing it right. All there food is amazing that I essentially eat it everyday. It can be pricey, but I've noticed that for how much meat and how many meats they throw on there for the same price is a great deal. My favorite is a toss up between #18 and #10. #18 can be a bit spicy for my stomach but the owner is great about making it less spicy on request. If I want another condiment for the pho I only have to ask the friendly staff and they bring it right out for me. Fish sauce is amazing and a special made sauce by the owner. This place has GREAT food! #34 is my personal favorite. I woukd recommend coming here to anyone. However, this doesn't come without a downside. They are EXTREMELY slow here. I usually do a "to go" order because the wait it far too long to just sit in here. They have an online menu and I suggest you use it, unless you're a very patient person. Tonight I made a very small and simple order. They suggested I give it about 30 minutes (which still seems incredibly long, given my order). I'm still standing here more than 45 minutes later and there is another individual also waiting on their order. There are only 3 tables occupied with a TOTAL of 8 people here. I love this place and visit it regularly. The staff is awesome. I order the same thing every time, a noodle bowl with pork and their INSANELY delicious egg rolls, and I put soy sauce in it instead of their sweet sauce, even tho they try to talk me out of it. Lol. My only complaint is that the pork is almost like jerky, so it hurts my teeth to eat. Wish it were more tender. The flavor is still awesome though. And those egg rolls....ohhhh yum. read more

I've never had Vietnamese food before and after I read reviews and was also referred there from a friend, I wanted to try it. So I went there for lunch today with my cousin..... The food was great and I also tried the lime drink that everyone raves about....that was yummy too......BUT.....after we boxed our food up we were chatting with the waitress as she dropped off the bill.....she hurried to excuse herself while she killed the COCKROACH that was running up the wall at our table.....freaking discusting!!! I'm so grossed out and I've been sick to my stomach all day!! Believe it or not, Roy has a great Vietnamese restaurant! Van Loi is just off 1900 W. in the heart of Roy, just south of KFC, so it's a little easy to miss if you're not looking for it. The interior is immaculate, and the staff is very friendly and happy to see you. Great selection of dishes to try out -- I'm a sucker for their curry chicken with vermicelli noodles! Food always tastes fresh, very well-cooked, and the flavor is just amazing. My only concern with Van Loi is how empty the place always seems to be when I go in! It's such a gem to have in Roy, I'd hate to see the place have to close up shop for lack of business. Prices are good, service is great -- definitely worth a visit for lunch or dinner! read more
