This place is tucked away from the main street, but Van Loi's signage is pretty spot on. We went here for some pho and coffee. Being a Vietnamese restaurant, I was a bit disappointed to learn that no one spoke Vietnamese here. I expected that with the spelling of Van Loi and their name having Vietnamese accents, there would be someone, but our server didn't know any. Not a killer but a bit sad because I wanted to speak in Vietnamese. If you know, you know! We went here around lunchtime and got the lunch combo special a Steak Pho which came with 1 spring roll or 1 egg roll. I got the egg roll and it had pork and shrimp in it. The steak pho's broth was good, but it didn't come with a lot of veggies. I am Vietnamese so I expected a lot of veggies on the side. You want to make your pho smell full of that veggie plus pho smell. Despite there not being a lot of veggies, it was okay. There were three things I didn't like about the pho. One, the noodles were cut. This should never be the case. All pho noodles should never be precut. And two, they never gave out chopsticks. You had to ask for them. So I'm assuming you expected everyone to eat with forks? Is that why the pho noodles were precut? Three, there weren't a lot of meat with the steak pho- maybe 4 pieces in total. The egg roll though was really good. I love the large egg roll piece. It was perfectly fried and there was a lot of filling in it. I would say that the egg roll was the star of the meal. read more

I have seen the reviews and people have told me about this place so we decided to try it, and I enjoyed the food, the staff were very friendly and knowledgeable, they made us feel comfortable, and safe and were funny. I had wonton egg noodle n meatballs. The soup was very good and authentic. Pho was good too! except too much noodles and not enough meat. The only thing I didn't like was the menu is so dirty like no one want to clean it for awhile. The waiter was nice, but he has no idea which sauce to go w the food the restaurant serve.. We've gone here numerous times through the years. This time I went for pho. I'd say it was average, not great. Nothing to write home about. Plenty of noodles, but a little skimpy on the meat. The best part of our ,meal was the full wrap spring rolls. They were great, very fresh, and tasty. My spouse had the grilled pork and rice dish and said it was delicious. We were a little disappointed that they didn't bring out the peanut sauce that they used to bring with the spring rolls, but that was no big deal. We probably should have asked. The waiter was all business, not super friendly and not unfriendly... but efficient. We'll go here again, but I'll probably pick something other than pho. Decided to try this place out since my husband loves Pho, he was disappointed to be honest. Portions are small , tastes too bland , no sauce except sriracha hoisin salt and pepper. Place looks like it could use some deep cleaning. I ordered grilled chicken and I could smell it right when they brought it. I know a fresh grilled chicken when I see one. That one looks like they grilled it the day before and just reheat it and brought it out. Not to mention it smells like it's almost gonna be spoiled. They only have one server and he looks very pressured . Not trying to be a Karen or anything but I just hope they can up their game more. We ordered the Vermicelli noodles. #32 and #33 on the menu. The grilled pork was really tough like jerky and the Vietnamese pork was dry and had a chemical taste. Not good. The egg rolls had no sauce with them. Another order with ours was the Veggie Pho and it looked really good. I would get that next time if I had to eat here again. read more

Thai tea looks like it came out of the can you buy at the Chinese store down the street. Food is good, however. Wait time to get seated on Friday night at 5 pm was short. We were the only ones here. Ordered the steak and meatball pho and the egg roll with full wrapping (as they called it). The egg roll was good, and was unique in the fact that I've never had a fried egg roll within a spring roll wrap. The pho bowl was decently sized for what you pay for. Not one of the bigger bowls that's for sure. Pho Saigon in salt lake has better portions and food. Pho noodles took 20 minutes to come out. Egg rolls took about 15-18 minutes to come out. The food is great. Pho is great with beef broth that simmers for 48 hours. The owner is very friendly and proudly explained to me how she grills the beef bones, then simmer for 48 hours, then add spices, etc. too many steps I forgot. But she is a master chef. Unfortunately she is the only one in the kitchen and it took more than 30 minutes for me to get my pho. I was the first customer there at 11am opening time but she takes her time. I tried another place today at Pho Banh because I didn't want to wait and I so regret it. The food at Pho Banh Ogden was crap. Next time I will wait for the master chef at Van Loi to make my pho. Being short staffed really made my visit a little unpleasant. One guy was simultaneously waiting on tables and was the cashier. I went with the Rare Beef Steak Pho lunch combo (9.95) that includes one fresh spring roll and a drink. So I went with the Fresh Squeezed Lime Juice. The broth really stands out and is very aromatic. We also ordered a vegetarian version and a Saigon style spicy version. Both fragrant and delicious. Don't forget to try the Vietnamese Drip Coffee with condensed milk. The only reason I gave it 3 stars was because of the painfully slow service but the food was solid so I might come back. read more

I got the Pho it was awesome. They didn't do that extra veggies to add flavor and spice, so if you don't ask for more, you don't get more. The waitress wasn't very attentive but I think it is because the place was half full and she was the only person on staff serving. I think it is a family establishment. Condiments didn't have cilantro or saw leaf coriander...this mysterious phenomenon may be something that's prevalent throughout SLC and surrounding areas. Also, I didn't get much basil...I've rectified that horrendous oversight by aggressively and consistently requesting additional basil...regardless of cost or sneers. Flavor of the broth was OKAY...not terrible but not fantastic...slightly sour. Also, I expect my meat to come out RAW or half RAW and I like to watch it cook in my Pho broth...not happening here. Meat came out already cooked and was a little dry. So what's the nail in the coffin? I had the steak pho and my wife had the flank pho, which was a little bit thicker pieces of meat than the steak. Both were very good. My husband and I ate in here one of the weekday late lunch hour and we didn't have any problems with our server. Food came out very fast and they were delicious. I had brisket and meatball pho and my husband got beef pho that was on lunch set menu. The quality of meat was definitely better on my pho so if you want good cuts of meat, get briskets pho. The soup itself has milder flavor. My husband likes here better than other places because of this reason. For me personally, this is my second favorite place since I like to have a stronger flavors. I'm visiting from Jersey and was craving pho. Came here on a Monday night around 630PM and we waited 5 minutes before anybody came out to see to us. There was a gentleman who was waiting after us to pay for his bill, as well. About 6 tables were occupied but no waitress to be found. The waitress finally came out and told us the wait for our food once she took our order would have 30-40 minutes. That's to say she comes to bring it out when it's ready and makes her rounds to every table. Had to leave and go elsewhere. Food was really good. Traditional Vietnamese menu. The menu is simple and they have pictures upon request so that was nice. The service was pretty average, nothing spectacular but no complaints. We had the steak pho, egg roll and Vietnamese fried rice. All of which were really good. The rice has a lot of sprouts so if you don't like them you better request it without. The pho was really good, great flavor and generous portion. Egg roll was good but a little heavy. The rice was lighter than many fried rices we have had, which we liked. Descent Pho for the area. A few things could be better. Spring rolls lack ingredients such as mint leafs and sprouts. The peanut sauce is so watery its kinda gross. They also put a lil drop of chili sauce inside the peanut sauce, this is the only thing that makes it somewhat tolerable. The broth could be better, its also missing something but I haven't been able to figure it out yet. The price is a little high, but the ingredients do seem fresh. We eat here alot because its closest to our home and nothing makes u feel better than a warm bowl of soup. The service part is great, the people that work here are very sweet and good at what they do. They always say 15-20 mins for togo. But it ends up being an hour. Dine in is longer it seems. I dont mind because they are so hospitable. Sometimes the recipes are not consistent or they forget too often. Not sure. They do close down daily for a few hours, this is also a little inconvenient. Let me start off by saying that I'm a fan of Pho. I've had Pho all over and this place is as good as any. The broth tastes amazing, and the meat is juicy and delicious. The only thing that concerns me about this place is the price. I've been to other Vietnamese restaurants that were comparable in quality, but their pho was considerable cheaper. However, this is the best Vietnamese in town. To get to those other restaurants you have to drive down to West Valley, which is a little far away. Overall, the atmosphere is great, the food is excellent, the price may be a little high, but it sure is worth it. read more
