    Hainanese chicken rice
    Sandra D.

I have ordered to go and dined in here, twice I have tried food here. The Pho is alright rhe flavour here lacks salt and aromatics. I order the snail noodle soup twice and bun Bo hue. The BBH is alright not bad, the snail soup when I dined in was lacking in all the flavours, presentation is basic, they gave proper veggies. The ran out and didnt have a lot of things on their menu. I tried the snail pork rolls they were okay. I don't recommend the hainanese chicken, the plate came with no sauce, rice was dry and looks old, tasted bland not like the photo and portion sucked. The first time i had their peach ice tea was good this time the peach ice tea was so sweet I had to go home and add lots of water and ice The service was lacking, she had someone who was inexperienced and was a bit angry, slammed the plates slow in making things. I waited 45 mins for my ice tea came up to get refills for my tea. There was only one cook in the kitchen. The ambiance was just casual mom and pops place. I will not be returning.

I'd seen the sign for Van 168 Coffee a few months ago and made a note to check it out. They serve North Vietnamese food, taking over the spot that previously held Tina Cake Desserts. The inside hasn't changed, still very casual with jazz music in the background. The menu consists of pho, bun, com hoac bun, dac biet, chao (congee), cac loai banh goc bac (Northern Vietnamese cakes) and desserts. The noodle bowls are $16.00 to $18.00, but portion sizes are generous. Prices include all taxes. Trip #1 - Herbs - basil, bean sprouts, shredded lettuce, lemon, chili peppers and homemade chili oil. Very generous portions. - Bun bo hue (#16) ($17.50) - they were out of pork blood, subbed in rare beef slices. Good variety of meats. Broth had depth with a faint hint of sweetness. - Bun rieu cha ca, cha tom (#19) ($17.50) - broth was light but well balanced. All the fish and shrimp cakes tasted homemade. Generous portions of crab. Satisfying. - Pho dac biet ga cay sate (#2) ($18.00) - chicken (bone-in) was mostly dark meat. Had a sip of the enjoyable broth. Trip #2 - Herbs - only basil, bean sprouts, lettuce and lemon this time around. - Pho bo ga (#6) ($16.00) - broth was excellent and the variety of meat was top notch. Good portions of bone-in chicken, rare beef slices, beef flank and beef cartilage (fantastic texture). - Bun oc cha oc (#24) ($17.50) - broth was light but had lemongrass and kaffir lime leaves in it. Plenty of snail but the homemade snail sausage were delicious; touch of heat (from chili pepper skins) and ginger stuffed inside. Cash or EFT only. Will be back to Van 168 for more bowls.

We came here for dinner as people highly rated this new Vietnamese restaurant. This restaurant used to be Tina's cake house but now it is a Vietnamese restaurant serving hot food and coffee beverages. We ordered a house special and freshwater Snail and Steam Snail Sausage Vermicelli. I was scared to eat snails, so my husband ate the dish and said it was great and had a very unique flavour that we couldn't eat it at other Vietnamese restaurants. I tried the house special. The soup base or broth tasted good and looked clean (without too much oil or fat). The restaurant also put a lot of beef in the dish. I liked the beef that was not too fatty I couldn't finish the noodles so I brought the leftover home. I ate it the next day. It still tasted great!!! And the noodles did not become soaky and soft. The business owners came to the front and had a chat with us. They recommended us trying the fish cake and crab cake noodles next time. Yeah!! We will for sure go back and try other dishes. There is street parking, so don't need to worry about parking problems.

Finally checked out Van 168 Coffee for a late night, Northern Vietnamese dinner. It's run by a friendly woman. We shared a bun bo hue ($17.50) and bun rieu cha ca, cha tom ($17.50). Both bowls were large, filling portions. Broth was flavourful and came out piping hot. Generous portions of meats. It's cash or EFT payment only. Looking forward to coming back to try their bun oc cha oc.

Came here on a weekday evening and was seated right away as we were the only table at the time. I ordered the crab and fish noodle soup and we shared the fresh salad rolls. The salad rolls fell a bit short for me, nothing to rave about and the dipping sauce was a bit lackluster. The noodle soup was good, the broth was flavourful and the fish and crab were delicious. Even though we were the only table, service was definitely lacking. Our water was never refilled and our server stood behind the counter most of the time.

Went for a later night dinner with the girlfriend. It's one of the few pho places that open late and is good. I had the spicy chicken pho and my girlfriend got the crab meat with shrimp and fish cakes bun. Both the soups were great. They only had one size, the portion was huge. The chicken wasn't dried and chewy. 10/10 would come again.

We heard of a new Vietnamese restaurant in town, so we decided to give it a try! We tried the chicken phó and regular beef phó. The portions were quite generous, so that's something we appreciated here. Vietnamese coffee was good, but couldn't really tell what the difference was with the other Vietnamese restaurants around the city. Kinda tasted the same. I think this place is alright. We went on a day where there was no one at the restaurant, they also didn't have any of the desserts when we were there. So that was a little bit odd. Service was alright, not great. My breakdown of Van 168: Location: 3.5/5 Food: 3/5 Service 3/5 Price 2.75/5 Might be worth a visit, but I think there might be better Vietnamese alternatives throughout the city. Especially in and around the Kingsway area, which is known as Little Vietnam. Lots of great Vietnamese Restaurants around the area. This one's alright, just not sure what their speciality was, or what they wanted to stand out.

Round sticky rice with pork ham (complimentary)

Cake out, pho in... While cruising along Kingsway in Vancouver, saw a grand opening sign for a new pho place. It has taken over the old spot of Tina's cake dessert. First time checked it out when it was having a soft opening so the menu was very limited, but it turned out to be quite good. Second time around, after over a month, craving for some late night pho on a snowy night so called to make sure they were still open till 11pm. The lady boss answered and were about to close but told me she'll wait for us, much appreciated. The restaurant is quite small with about 9 tables, a very casual ambiance, and finally had a full menu. Here were the food I ordered; 1. Steamed snail sausages. Ordered to try it, pretty good! This should be an Asian fan favourite but I stopped ordering snails long time ago. 2. Round sticky rice with pork ham. The boss lady gave it to us to try, taste decently okay, but I still prefer the Chinese style more. 3. Bun bao hue. The soup base was very flavourful with its unique distinct taste as a good bun bao hue should be and the ingredients were proper and plentiful. 4. Bun rieu cha ca, cha tom (fish cake, shrimp cake, crab paste vermicelli soup). Soup was steaming hot, great amount of everything, really good amount of crab paste and the soup was very tasty. I highly recommend this one of you are here. 5. House special beef noodle soup. Tasty broth, the beef were tender and of generous portion. This is a nice little cozy place with a very casual ambiance to it, almost feels like at home eating a bowl of noodle soup. The menu does have a few dishes not many places have. Honestly, so far I really enjoyed the fish cake crab paste soup here; the portion was more than generous, the broth was tasty and a lot of crab paste cake. The bun bao hue was really good too, for all the bells and whistles such as pig feet and pork blood, etc..., although the outside looks a bit sketchy cause of the renovations on outside of the building, but the owner and staffs are very nice and welcoming. I will definitely repeat and recommend trying it out if you haven't yet. I hope this business will keep its tasty food and much success!

#19 - fish cake, shrimp cake, and crab paste vermicelli soup
    Natalie W.

On a Monday evening, it was pretty quiet for dinner. They have quite a few tables and plenty of natural lighting. The tea they served tasted different than other places. They served it iced since it was hot out and it was really refreshing. I had the fish cake, shrimp cake, and crab paste vermicelli soup. It didn't have a very strong dill flavour and was more tomato-y. But I didn't mind that. There was plenty of shrimp/fish cakes and crab paste. It was a pretty good portion. It is on the pricier side compared to other pho places, but the portion and quality justified it. My friend had the chicken noodle soup and the chicken was very tender. We didn't realize that the broths were chicken based rather than beef, even for the beef noodle soups. But it was still tasty. I liked how they served a variety of items with the noodle soup. It included beansprouts, Thai basil, Thai chilis, lettuce, and another leafy vegetable. Overall, it was a satisfying meal and I'd come back again!

Drove by this new place and decided to come in and try it and I was surprised that the food was fair good and got a big selection of pho that's not available in most typical pho restaurants. Service was really nice and friendly. Atmosphere is fairly comfortable.

Amazing food! Was absolutely blown away. We got the Loc Lac and Snail soup both so so good. There was a side appetizer soup for the Loc Lac as well that was just phenomenal. Will definitely come back!

Good food, friendly staff, but watch out for over billing! Food ordered were #3, 10, 19 and 37. Was charged for #37 that never came. Cash only on hand written receipt... Hmm. There are good food all over Vancouver so it would hard press for us to go there again with a wad of cash in hand.

I appreciated the good service and chill atmosphere, but not sure if I would come back. I would say that their house made spicy was really good. A mix of sweet, sour, and spicy. Had a brightness to it yet also very, very spicy. Tastes great on many of the dishes, especially if you wanted a nice "kick" to the food. I believe you can order a jar to take home if you wish.

The space is much nicer, with high ceilings and lots of light - great looking bistro. I ended up trying the following: - Mussels: Very good. Classic dish, but I really like the use of cream in the broth. - Bánh Mì Cay Hải Phòng (Spicy Baguette Sticks): Good. A nice little snack, although it would be easy to recreate at home. - Lamb Chops: Very good. Cooked just right, and the pepper sauce added extra flavour. - Fried Frog Legs: Very good. This was probably the surprise dish for me. They weren't just the legs, but the entire bottom of the frog, so the pieces were huge. The garlic, butter and chili flakes gave it a extra punch. I really enjoyed this one. - Pho Bo: Good. Not the best pho I've had, but it's good enough to stand on it's own. Service was quite good. Very cheerful and quite attentive. Overall a nice meal. It's a great space, the food is solid, and service to match. What I really like is having the variety of both French and Vietnamese dishes, without either of them suffering in quality. Only downside is that is it expensive for what you get.

Ordered Green Papaya Salad ($12), Lemongrass Chicken on Vermicelli with one spring roll ($17), one lime soda ($6.50) and one pop ($3). Food arrived within minutes of ordering. Portions were very generous. The salad was perfect with everything very fresh, as it should be but often isn't in some places. Plump prawns and the scent and taste of basil was prominent. Delicious! The lemongrass chicken (we ordered extra chicken) with a spring roll was also very generous. We did not finish it between the two of us. Again, all was fresh, tasty and hot. This is one of our standard orders and Pho Goodness did not disappoint. Granddaughter declared it better than at our regular favourite, and Pho Goodness is around the corner from her home and not a bus ride out to Kingsway! Service was friendly and responsive. We asked that the volume be turned off on the massive TV over our heads (which nobody was watching) (it was), requested a glass for the pop and immediately received a tumbler full of ice. Lovely. We have found a new favourite on Davie Street, a true foodie heaven with a collection of independent restaurants of many ethnicities available. The Garden Rolls were absolutely the #1 worst ones we've ever eaten! We've had hundreds of fresh rolls at dozens of places and sadly, none were as tasteless as these. They consisted of noodles, a bit of flavorless tofu and cucumber. Fresh rolls MUST have at least one or more of the following: fresh mint, fresh cilantro or fresh Thai Basil. Hestia's had NONE!. To add insult to injury, the watery sauce also had NO flavor. To add more insult, they were baggy and poorly wrapped and the innards kept falling out. Not fun and definitely not good. The king oyster mushrooms were very good, but there was a ton of pink mayo dousing it. I would have preferred the sauce be in a separate bowl so we could choose how much dipping we'd like to do. The saffron tofu bowl was sensational! Perfectly spiced and full of a huge variety of well-cooked veggies plus the saffron rice was good too. No one came during our meal to ask if we needed anything or to ask how our meal was. The customer service is in need of some work.

We also got an order of salad rolls ($7.50 plus tax), which comes with 2 rolls. The rolls came quite late. They were pretty standard, coming with fried tofu, vermicelli, and lettuce.
