The only reason I'm giving this place 3 stars is because I have been coming here since I was 9 years old. For 20 years this place has been my go to place to eat. Sad that it has changed so much. The quality of service and food is always up and down. I order the same thing almost every time and it's never cooked the same way. Came here for dinner two days ago and it took 15 minutes for anyone to even come over and say hello after we sat down. I had to get up and go ask for service. Then come here for breakfast today and had to ask for water 3 times. The food was just okay. It's sad because it's so close to home so many good memories but the quality is really questionable lately. For sure going to take a break from coming here. read more

This was my first time here and most likely will be the last. I had gotten a Spanish style omelet and a cup of coffee and the food itself was boring and the service was type lazy but that wasn't really the issue, for the most part at least. When it was time to pay the bill, the bill was not what I usually pay for food at a diner, or even expected to pay. The waiter overcharged me more thinking I wouldn't double check the prices on the menu. I ended up paying the bill and tipping the waiter but never again. An unremarkable diner serving unremarkable overpriced food within an unremarkable ordinary setting. It's too well kept to have character and it's too boring to have charm. My family came here several times for breakfast until we eventually stopped coming. We figured that we can get the same good quality food in bigger quantities and at a cheaper price in other diners. For breakfast I would typically get the corned beef with eggs for $8.95. However, in the Concord diner I can get the same thing plus potatoes and toast for $7.50. The Concord also has more options for breakfast while Val Brook's breakfast menu is quite limited. I rather go to the place that has waffles & fried chicken and eggs benedict (Concord Diner! Represent!!). This diner is right across the street from Guys and Dolls Billiards. I found it's location to be convenient in one instance when my friends and I were hungry one night after playing pool. If you've been here all your life or you don't mind the prices this place is OK. The food is standard diner fare, the place is well kept, and the waitstaff is adequate. While it's clean, with newer more intact furniture compared to other diners, I just can't seem to bring myself to Val Brook. It's utterly meh. I continuously tried to give to sausage a chance, but the overplump bad turkey hotdog feel would not subside. They need to switch that out! Awful. Only other option was pork. My omelette? Overcooked. Homefries? Undercooked. They asked if I wanted to box anything as my plate was left partially eaten. I wanted to ask for a refire or refund, but those can end badly for the eater. I won't go back. I've lived around the corner from this place for 14 years . We go out to eat here when in the mood for a big meal with the whole family because it offers a full menu for everyone. This is one of the most clean establishment. The parking lot is always clean and never do I ever smell or see any. Now the food. It is always amazing!!! The customer service is great !!! I recommend anything they offer. Most places I would only order a burger. Here you should try the chef specials. The broiled fish platters are amazing. It's a full course meal. We go to Valbrook often and are always satisfied with the food and the service. The only disappointment is the dressing for the Greek salad which lacks spices. They used to put spices in the dressing but stopped so now if we want a Greek salad we go to another establishment. Because of the other comments here we tested the Concord today. Never again. Table was sticky even after they cleaned it, water glass had an odor, Romanian steak over marinated, potatoes were canned white potatoes, burger had some type of fume coming from it, mayo in cole slaw was soured, fries were good. Most restaurants these days have a multitude of accommodations for customers with dietary restrictions...but not this place! They made making a "special" meal very difficult so I ordered a la cart. The short story is I ordered a side of grilled shrimp ($10) and a baked potato ($4.50). When the bill came my portion was $27.95! I asked how it was tallied and was told that it was the price for a shrimp meal which would of come with rice, salad, vegetables, soup etc!! When I questioned the owner...he said "That is how we do it." He wouldn't even adjust it a little with our table of 8! My meal wasn't worth $10 and I paid $35. Being that it was late at night there were only a few options in this area. We were already on Merrick Road so I decided to give them a try and see how the dessert would be. How could you screw up desserts right? They did! We picked up the dessert and went home to eat it. Long story short when we got home we found out that the Strawberry Shortcake cake that we got was dry and not that fresh. It wasn't the strawberry shortcake that was that bad it was the other dessert, a chocolate souffle sort of dessert that had mold in the center. Sad thing is to get to the center you have to take a bite which my boyfriend unfortunately did. He instantly notice a tart taste and that's when I looked where he had dug his spoon in and noticed fungus growing all in the cup. I will NEVER EVER EVER GO BACK! They are not serving fresh food. I think the only people that would give this diner anything but 0 or 1 star are ppl who are old and have been going there forever and have no tastebuds. They need to do way better. We ordered our food and waited while the other patrons were served before us, when we finally received our food which was cold, the waitress was extremely rude and management did care. An excellent NY dinner with caring owners who run a tight ship. Four of us had brunch New Year's Day and every one of us were more than satisfied. In fact, my one very particular sister who orders her eggs cooked but not brown, and her home fries well done, but not burnt said it was her best breakfast since forever. My turkey club was made perfectly with crispy bacon and real turkey, enough for two meals. Even their cole slaw was delicious and the pickles were crispy. Coffees and waters were refilled without even asking. Our waitress Francine was more than pleasant and brought us whatever we asked for. Valbrook is the best diner around. The service is fast and the staff is really friendly. My friends and I come here maybe once a week and we have never found anything wrong with the place. Some items on the menu are a little overpriced but the food is good. I can't say I've ever had anything fancy here but the simple stuff (cheeseburger, mozzarella sticks, wraps, eggs, fries...) is good. For all the bad ratings on here, you're going to a DINER, what are you expecting? Out of every diner I've ever been to, Valbrook has been the best one. Every other diner I've been to, the staff has been nasty, the plates are always dirty, and the food tastes like it's been sitting out for hours -- THIS IS NOT THE CASE WITH VALBROOK. I am upgrading my last two reviews of this venue being guardedly optimistic. The turning point to revisit and evaluate my personal likes and dislikes was based on several things. First: the staff and bus service is really very good. They are attentive. They are old school nothing fancy. The food is consistently good. Flavorful and comes out of the kitchen hot. Their burgers are excellent and so are their chops and salads. I would love if they would be generous with some of the soft costs like ice tea refills like they do with hot coffee, They have great Cole slaw but serve a small portion and charge if you want another. Most of their competitors who are very much alike and considerably updated have no problem with refills and seconds on pickles and sides. But all in all even though I like extra refills and an occasional extra slaw I will live with it because the service and personalities are really nice. So I was very wrong with my last review and this stands for a meaningful correction. All is good!j read more
