Ever since I moved to Seattle for a 6-month internship I have been yearning to get my hair done just the way I wanted. Since it is seemingly so hard to find a good hairstylist who is visionary and can replicate what you are explaining to them..I put off getting a hair cut for the past 6 months and let it grow out into a long volumnous mess.
First off, my standards aren't too high since I don't like my hair really refined but I do like my hairstylist to LISTEN to what I am saying instead of doing whatever pleases their highness. When I say, "I want to keep my length" that means I want to walk out with most of the hair I had when I walked it, while sporting a funky new do. Not too complicated right? Well..for some hair salons it is. I have tried multiple salons and have never walked out completely satisfied. And isn't that a little sad. I have tried multiple salons such as the famous Gene Juarez, and while they do give a great cut, they didn't listen to what I wanted and it just wasn't a cut for me. SO a year later I am back in Seattle soul-searching for the latest and greatest. I happened upon Vain while walking along First Avenue but I didn't have the courage to actually make an appointment until I was referred by a close friend of mine. I read some reviews on the place and visited the Vain website and I chose the hair stylist on who I guessed would be able to fit my needs.
Well now, if it isn't Vain, my hair salon. The hurdy to my gurdy, the Walt to my Disney and the birthday to my Friday! My first experience with VAIN downtown was just great. I mean I didn't come to any life changing epiphanies while sitting in the styling chair, but I did receive a great hair cut from Janae. This is the first time I have come home satisfied.
I'll start off reviewing the salon itself. If you're looking for a laid back, funky, fun and professional place to get your hair done, Vain Downtown is the place to be. Just walking in you feel comfortable and you get to admire the decor all around from the styrofoam cup laterns to the unique little knick knacks they sell. Water and lollipops are available while you wait and you immediately notice the personality shining through the hairstylists hair dos. 4/5
Now to my stylist, Janae is a funky, fun, outgoing, helpful, inntuitive, whimsical pink haired individual. I brought in some reference photos just to give her an idea of what I wanted but we didn't need to look at them too long before she knew what I wanted. I love having long hair but I like having it mixed with edgy layers that I can fringe up on top and give my hair style personality that I can dumb down for work or spike up for going out or rocking out at metal concerts. Taking away my length just doesn't "cut" it for doing windmills. Just as I was saying "I want to keep my le--" She already knew that's what I wanted. I was very satisfied with how she cut my layers. My last cut was very butchered and I had a plethora of uneven chunks that she fixed very nicely for a more natural flow. At the end of my cut she recommended a great product to volumize my hair. "Osis: Dust It". It's a great product that I have fallen in love with. It elimnates my constant need to back comb my hair and it keeps the volume for hours. It helps seperate my layers for a piecey rocker style that I love but has always taken me twice the time to accomplish with a comb and hairspray. Janae is a overall 6/5 and I will definitely be back in 2 months when I move down for school. I do think that I will try out the other hairstylists since they all just wreak of talent and it is good to get a feel for other tastes but Janae is great. More power to her because she loves animated movies and her cats.
I paid $45 dollars for a cut which is very low priced for where I come from ($85 for just a trim in my hometown, and a not very good one I might add) $19.99 for the Osis: Dust It product and I left a $8 tip. Granted I would have definitely left a larger tip but I needed the cash for the bus fare home and cookies..
Sorry if the review is too long...
