I've gone to Vain off and on for nearly five years now, sometimes with good results, sometimes with mediocre ones. They seem to have a quickly rotating stable of people, so it's very difficult for me to get more than two haircuts with the same person. Last time I got mine cut, the receptionist recommended Scarlett. That was early July. I keep my hair in a pixie cut, and she cut it very short then, an inch more than I wanted for sure. It was also a very flat cut, all mostly the same length whereas I like the top longer and shaggier. But she spent nearly two hours on it, and thinned my hair significantly (a plus for me, as mine is very thick and gets bushy at this length otherwise). It was livable if not great, and over the next few months, it grew out well thanks to the thinning. It was so short when I left that I didn't need a cut until now in November.
I went back to see Scarlett again today, and it was a totally different experience, for the worse. I explained that after several months without a trim, the back and sides were way too long and the top was slightly too long. I also noted that last time we had gone shorter than what I wanted it to be now, and how long ago that had been so she would have an idea of how much regrowth had happened since then, and what length it would have been after that cut. After that, she was incredibly rude through the entire appointment. I prefer not to smalltalk about my personal life with strangers, but I felt pestered with questions thoughout, that I was obligated to answer for the sake of politeness--and at one point, after I'd answering that I had nothing going on (the truth!) to the severalth prying variation of 'any interesting plans this weekend/last weekend/holidays' she snitted at me, 'Do you /ever/ do anything interesting?'
About halfway through the cut, Scarlett asked me what I thought of it. I looked it over and checked the length on the sides, and noted that it was still a little longer than I wanted. As I had already told her, I tend to go at least three months between haircuts due to time and money constraints, so I want to find that happy medium between 'too short' and 'needs cutting again in four weeks'. She then snapped at me that I had 'complained about it being too short last time and needed to be more specific.'
After that, Scarlett just started hacking on my hair, cutting chunks out of it and giving it a single rough pass of thinning shears. She was finished with the entire cut in thirty minutes from start to finish, including washing/drying, and rushed me out. I tried to ask if it had been thinned enough to keep from getting poofy over time, and she snarked that of course it would look like a mess if I didn't do anything with it. By then I was ready to get away and not let her trash more of my hair. I paid $70 and went home, and then I cried in front of my mirror over how bad it looked when I actually got a chance to inspect it. The sides in front of my ear are wildly different thicknesses thanks to one side getting thinned and the other not. The bangs are uncut in the middle and sliced off on the side, and the top has plainly visible blunt chucks missing from it on both sides. My hairline wasn't clipped down to match the back of the cut, and I'm scared to think about what the rest of it looks like where I can't see.
Overall, absolutely terrible experience, both the cut and the treatment of a customer. I called the salon back, and they offered me an appointment for a free fix with one of their senior stylists, but I'm not looking forward to it. He's going to have to cut off even more length to fix the uneven, botched awfulness that is now my hair for the next six months until it grows out again. read more
