I'm a UES local and have been to Uva many times for drinks -- it's always a fun spot. Since so many people recommended eating there, I finally decided to give it a try. The restaurant itself is very cozy, but unfortunately, the food was pretty disappointing. We ordered the beef carpaccio, which had barely any beef -- it was mostly arugula and cheese. The pappardelle with veal ragu tasted oddly like it had potatoes in it (I think those were actually big chunks of carrot). We also tried the short ribs, which were quite bland and tasted as if they'd been boiled before serving. There are so many great restaurants in the UES, so I'd skip Uva for the food. read more

For an upscale upper east restaurant, this experience was completely unacceptable. In the middle of our entrees, I saw a bug crawling on the table. My friend's small bottle of Diet Coke was on the table which I used to kill the bug. When we told our server, she seemed indifferent and called the manager. The manager simply shrugged and said "it must have come from outside". We were sitting indooors! We told them we couldn't continue our meal and were leaving. Instead of apologizing or offering to make things right, the manager handed us a bill, charging us for the appetizers AND THE SODA I USED TO KILL THE BUG! When in NY! This little beautiful step into a book was so nice and cozy! I truly can't wait to go back.So every year around Christmas we walk from the metropolitan museum all the way down past Bryant Park Christmas village,yes almost 10 miles in the cold. I made a Yelp reservation and I was pleasantly surprised.The service was fast and thoughtful.The menu and specials all sounded great,hard decisions! Once I saw mushroom it struck a cord with my taste buds. Went to Uva for dinner and it was so busy! Loved that they allowed my Mimi to join in on our meal! We had a table in the garden. I generally enjoy the food here. Particularly our calamari salad, eggplant parm and the veal ragu with homemade pasta ribbons. I was disappointed the veal ragu was mainly sauce and barely any ground veal. And the side Brussels sprouts with pancetta. I was surprised that this dish was substitute with bacon, which were also huge slices. Would've preferred smaller bits. Just felt very overpowering with the bacon. However since the pieces were large it was easy to remove. I loved that all of my dishes came out very hot! And my server was attentive! The other note of disappointment was the wine by the glass list. I debated which one to order between the super tuscan vs Chianti. Neither was up to my liking and I normally love these two wines. However the by glass option was horrible. So I opted for the Cabernet, which had a fuller body. Overall, minus the wine by the glass list, the food is solid and flavorful. Rustic and cozy atmosphere with helpful and attentive wait staff. This place has a great vibe with excellent Italian food and gets high marks for presentation. Burrata Berese as well as the Burrata Caprese were both creamy, fresh and delicious. We had seven in our group so we decided to try both. The Berese has the traditional tomato, peppers and basil while the Caprese has an interesting combination of fava beans, yellow tomatoes and a balsamic glaze. Both excellent choices as was the Calamari Grigliati which was grilled and served over a lovely arugula salad. The mini veal meatballs were extremely dry and although the sauce was good I wouldn't order them again. The Costi Di Manzo Brasate short ribs were tender as could be. Pappardelle Al Ragu Di Vitello was excellent, fresh ribbons of pasta topped with a veal Ragu. Truffle Gnocchi while good was very rich in a creamy black truffle sauce. There was also an extensive wine list and cocktail menu. Overall excellent dining experience that I would recommend. read more

I've been wanting to check this place out. I came on a Friday night during prime dinner time (7 pmish). My friend and I didn't have a reservation but they were able to seat us in one of the outdoor seating (which had heat lamps). I got the shrimp fettuccine ($27) and an aperol spritz ($18). Chose this spot for a romantic dinner date and it delivered. The interior is beautifully decorated and the dim lighting sets the scene for a memorable night. We sat inside but they have seating outside which looked welcoming as well. Ordered the wrapped mozz to start, was tasty and interesting twist on a mozz stick. Followed with the the cavatelli pesto and the short rib. Short rib was my favorite- very tender and its a big portion. The cavatelli was just ok, was a bit bland for my taste and slightly over cooked but not terrible. The layout is sort of uncomfortable, although they do have a nice area in the back of the establishment, I recommend that you request to be seated there if you go. The servers were attentive but not overly nice or friendly. It was a member in my party's birthday, and they did sing happy birthday and charged us for the birthday cake, which is okay. I would strongly recommend that you do not order the Fettuccine Alfredo. Just trust me, don't. The location is mediocre, it is not great. The bathrooms are very very small. More importantly, the appetizers arrived about 8 minutes after we ordered which means it wasn't made to order. The service was not great either. We had to ask for our server multiple times to bring our menus which is not normal. Our server had an attitude and wouldn't bring bread until we ordered our food. Pasta under cooked. Tasted like canned bitter tomato paste. Appetizers were lame. Only good thing was the fig salad special. Then it took forever to get our check after requesting with different staff members. Uva is a solid spot for a brunch date or a tasty Italian meal! Stopped in on a Saturday afternoon with no wait. BF and I were seated in a sunny greenhouse-like area in the back of the restaurant. I actually liked the ambiance a bit more than in the front room -- the main dining room is very dark, although still very nice. We went for their brunch but the pastas looked like the real standout to me, so I ended up getting the mezzelune boscaiola (delicious, very creamy prosciutto + mozz ravioli with mushroom). The portion size is on the lighter side, but I was still so happy with my choice! My bf ordered an omelet which he enjoyed, but to me it didn't hold up next to the pasta. My recommendation-- unless you're really into omelets or french toast, skip the brunch menu and focus on their regular entrees. read more

Uva is where the Italian ambiance is at on the upper east side. I was there on a Sunday night and we were in the mood to indulge so we ordered mac and cheese and Cacio e Pepe. Cacio e Pepe is typically my go to order but Uva's version is maybe a bit too authentic for me? We are talking rustic Parmesan so it takes a specific palette. The Mac and cheese was good, very indulgent as expected. Bruschetta ricotta as an app was good but did not blow expectations. If I were to go back I'd try a red pasta to switch things up. Just stopped by here last night. Before I say anything: I almost never go to Italian restaurants in NYC, because I'm a giant snob and I get to travel to Italy itself pretty often; so usually the food in this city (besides pizza) is insanely overpriced or just not that good, as far as I'm concerned. That said, I was happy and pleasantly surprised by my visit here. They have fairly genuine dishes that do a great job of at least approximating what you could get in a decent joint over in Italy. They're clearly quite popular and successful - the restaurant was jam-packed (even with multiple outdoor seating areas) by 7-ish on a Monday night. While not obscenely expensive, you're definitely paying for quality - I got a bit of antipasti (a good selection of cold cuts and cheese) and a parmigiana di melanzane as an entree, plus a drink, and ended up spending about $60-70 just for myself. But yes, the quality overall was good, and again their menu has some excellent options for both a primo or secondo piatto. Just as importantly, their staff were super attentive and friendly - despite how mega-busy they clearly were. The one thing I was bummed out about is that they only serve their pizza after 10:00 pm - I hear it's great, but no luck trying it since we were done with food by about 9:30. I'm sure they have their reasons but it'd be great to expand their hours into earlier in the evening. Anyhow I'd be happy to come back and see if the pizza lives up to the hype. read more
