I've been wanting to try UVA and was so happy when I finally got the chance. We started with the ricotta bruschette which was very good but smaller than I expected. They also provided us with bread for the table which was cold and could've used a dipping sauce aside from plain olive oil. I had the eggplant parm for my main which was tasty but not the best eggplant parm I've had. My friend had the rigatoni alla siciliana which she really enjoyed. Our love affair with Italian food continued with a very good dinner at Uva (reservations recommended on prime nights). We were seated to an absolutely packed restaurant at our promised time and noise levels were on the average end with pretty much all tables occupied. The restaurants felt sufficiently staffed though, and there was absolutely no service issue, in fact, it was fantastic. Uva has a very romantic vibe to it, and as inviting as their cocktail and wine list looked, our dry January had comfortably flowed into March, so we got straight to ordering our dinner which included their ROBIOLA CHEESE AND BLACK TRUFFLES ($12) and POLENTA TARTUFATA ($19) as appetizers - both absolutely fantastic, but the Robiola being the winner. For mains, we got a few pastas including RIGATONI ALLA SICILIANA ($26), CAVATELLI AL FIOR DI PESTO ($26), and PENNE GRATINATE ($26) - Cavatelli being an absolute winner! The last day of our New York stay we wanted to have real authentic Italian food after our Guggenheim visit.... yes, this place was featured at NHONY but to me that would not matter. Pappardelle and Gnocchi Ricotta were our main dishes after a delicious salad (Bianca) and polpettine. Delicious, full of flavor and obviously using the correct ingredients as we did not feel drowsy afterwards (seems to be an issue with Italian places in our experience - maybe an issue California?). Finished our meal with real gelato and a torta di mandorle (almond tart). Ambiance? The place is quite dark but luckily we were able to sit at the back patio which helped a LOT. This place has some of the worst service I've encountered in my entire life. I came to Uva last night with 2 friends for drinks. Each of us ordered a cocktail at approximately 11 PM. My first friend received her drink about 20 minutes later, and myself and my other friend never received our drinks. At around 11:45 PM - after sitting without cocktails for 45 minutes - I flagged down one of the servers. I want to also note that these guys were extremely dodgy and avoiding eye contact with patrons so we wouldn't ask them anything. In any event, I asked a busboy or waiter where our drinks were. He disappeared and after another 15 minutes, he finally retrieved them. I don't know if the bartender forgot to make them or what was going on but the entire experience was beyond unprofessional. To make matters worse, later that evening, my friends and I ordered martinis with our waiter. I asked him politely if mine could be extra dirty, and I kid you note, this man ROLLED HIS EYES at me. The gall. If you're looking for drinks, service, or basic professionalism, do yourself a favor and go literally anywhere else. read more

I started with a special soup - tomato and vidalia onion with basil oil on top. This was a smooth soup like a veloute. It reminded me of being a kid and picking a tomato out of my mom's garden on a hot summer day. The flavor was robust and delicious! My main was the pollo alla partenopea - breast of chicken filled with caciocavallo cheese and served with a plum tomato sauce and artichokes. OMG DIVINE! I do not think I have ever had chicken taste this good before. Shout out to Natalie who steered me to this menu gem! My spouse started with the lightly breaded calamari served over greens and tomatoes. It was fresh (not from frozen) and among the most unusual presentation of calamari ever. The greens were a perfect balance to the calamari. For his main, he had pappardelle with veal ragu. The pappardelle was housemade and the veal ragu was luxurious and thick. A winning combination! The food at Uva is 2nd to none! This restaurant is not full of tourists. You can see people greeting neighbors, people meeting friends, etc. It is a gem of a restaurant. Would I eat here again? I am very picky about Italian food though, having lived there for many years, so I try to find places that would have fresh pasta as well as authentic Italian cuisine. It was very hard to hear one another due to some noisy tables, and on top of that our server brought our entrees even before we got to finish our appetizers in peace. I found myself at Uva the other night for an educational dinner. While steakhouses are usually the go-to for hosting these things, occasionally other cuisines some through so I was excited for the change. A couple of my colleagues had been to Uva before with good things to say, so I was excited to learn something and check out the food for myself. Meaning 'grape' in Italian, Uva serves Italian food. As soon as I walked in, I was feeling the vibe. It's a narrow space, but the dark woods and dim lights gave it a really intimate feel. We were seated downstairs in a private room where these aesthetics continued. The place was also bustling which added to the overall exciting feel of the restaurant. Similar to other educational programs I've been to, we were given a prix fixe menu in lieu of ordering off the main one. We started by choosing between two salads and eggplant rollatini. I decided on one of the salads that was paired with walnuts, gorgonzola, and pear. It was pretty good and the light dressing kept me from getting too full. For mains, we were able to choose from a couple of pastas, some seafood dishes, and short ribs. I decided to get the gnocchi di ricotta; this was pretty good - the sauce was creamy but not too heavy and it had good flavor. For dessert we were served family style strawberries with mascarpone and chocolate "salami" which was kinda like a chocolate roll with cookies in the middle aimed to look like the fat in salami. Both were fine. In retrospect, I do have some grievances with Uva, but since some of these choices may have been in the hands of the host I can't blame the restaurant entirely. In terms of food, it was pretty good - nothing blew me away but it wasn't bad. I just really felt skimped out in several ways: we weren't served any bread baskets, there was no offer for soft drinks, and the portion sizes were small. My colleague who had been here on her own accord previously said the gnocchi portion was definitely bigger in the past. Also, they didn't offer shaved truffles like I saw in some of the pics. Finally, the desserts were clumsy and messy to handle family style. Overall, Uva was just okay. Again, these choices may have been in the hands of the host, I'm just stating observations based on my experience. I stand by my 3 star rating since the food itself was just fine to me. Uva is a standard Italian restaurant serving a wide variety of items on the menu. The layout is very cramped, but the vibe is very lively and fun. We've come here a couple times for brunch, but we came for dinner this time. It was meatball Monday, so I got the prix fixe menu, which included an appetizer, a pasta entree, a dessert, and a glass of house wine for $48. The choices are limited - around 3-4 options per section. For the appetizer, I got the mazo Kobe beef meatballs with polenta (not pictured) - this was my favorite thing I had that night. The meatballs are flavorful and SUPER tender. I would eat multiple of these as my whole meal! For the entree, I got the spaghetti with meatballs and was set back by the difference in the quality of the meatballs from before. They were heavy spiced and kind of tough and dry. The pasta was okay - nothing amazing. My partner got the veal ragu pappardelle with veal ragu. We both preferred this over my spaghetti dish. But this was also a little underwhelming. The sauce just tasted like a tomato sauce with meat thrown in. The pasta had a nice texture though. For dessert, I chose the fried rice pudding balls with a grape jam. The jam was really sour compared to the hot rice pudding balls, so it tasted even more sour. This was okay and we probably won't order it again. The service was quick and attentive despite how busy it was inside. Will come back for the Kobe beef meatballs and brunch, but probably won't have the other things we got. read more

I'll start off by saying that the atmosphere in the place is a lot of fun. Towards the front of the restaurant it feels like everyone is in a house or dining room just hanging out and having a good time with dark wood covering the entire room, towards the back it's taking you to an enclosed outside area where there are a bunch a plants and it's a bit lighter and almost feels like you are outside or in a greenhouse. The service was great! The waiters were sociable and everything got refilled quickly and our food was served really fast. The food on the other hand really just lacked a lot of punch to it. On the surface everything we had was prepared fine, the textures were there, the plating was great, but the depth of flavor wasn't there. Everything was one note, it didn't have any seasoning to it, every dish was screaming for salt. The beet gnocchi in a Gorgonzola sauce just tasted of cream and couldn't tell it even had blue cheese in it. I ordered the Gnocchi Di Ricotta and I thought it was okay. The gnocchi was very dense and towards the middle of each pasta, it was hard to taste the flavors. The sauce also wasn't particularly memorable or had a lot of truffle flavor. I think the Trader Joe's truffle cheese crisps had a bigger emphasis on truffles than this dish. We had a preselected menu that everyone LOVED and the service was truly spectacular. In terms of pricing, I did a lot of research for large groups and Uva was a very fairly priced option. The eggplant appetizer dish we ordered was also delicious and the pink vodka sauce was to die for. We also shared a pesto pasta which was so creamy and not too heavy on the pesto (it was just right)! They do have a full bar with limited options for in house cocktails so I ended up with an aperol spritz but their wine menu is quite extensive. I will say the service was a little too quick in terms of picking up our dishes but we took our time with the meal. Been here multiple times for dinner but dropped by for weekend Brunch. We partook in their $32 Brunch special/deal - an entree, a side, and a brunch cocktail (or glass of house wine). We got there during opening and got seated immediately. I got the strawberry & mascarpone pancakes with a side of sausages. The rest of my party got the french toast with a side of polenta and one of the frittatas with a side of breakfast potatoes. The pancakes were fluffy and thick, I personally didn't need syrup because of the creamy and sweet mascarpone cream and tart and juicy strawberries (and compote). The breakfast sausages were standard and not noteworthy. When my friend ordered the french toast, we were alerted that the bread contained oranges and raisins. To which, was not an issue for us. After receiving the order, we were able to tell that the bread was a horizontal cross-section of a panettone. If you are a fan, you will love it. The polenta was a bit dense and bland - we wouldn't order it again. The frittata and breakfast potatoes weren't too noteworthy. The cocktails were not mixed well but were still enjoyable. Overall, a worthwhile Brunch deal in the area (around $42 per person after tax and tip). I wouldn't mind coming again for Brunch but I would stick to Dinner here. read more

I've been to UVA years ago and it's nice to see they're still as popular as they were (primarily for that famous gnocchi). I also see that there's an "UVA Next Door" quite literally next door. I'm not sure how the menu differs but I would definitely try it. My friend and I got the caprese salad and meatballs to start which complemented each other well. In addition to the appetizers, the olive oil they use here is fantastic- my friend is Italian and he agrees! As for the mains of course we got pasta- my friend ordered the special and I forgot the name of the one I got but it was prosciutto filled ravioli with a creamy mushroom sauce.
