Recommended to us by a friend, this restaurant absolutely lived up to our friend's recommendation. Outstanding food, one of the best Italian meals we've ever had. We enjoyed the lobster tail appetizer, veal chop with shiitake mushrooms and onion, spaghetti Bolognese. All excellent. Service was good. Wait staff was on top of everything. I've been coming here for almost 25 years. It's one of my favorite places in Manhatten but over time either tastes change or places evolve. I'm not quite sure which one occurred here. The vibe is always amazing but it doesn't have the same energy it had in the 2000s when I dined at different times feet from Sky Stallone or Agassi. It feels less crowded now and a bit less intimate. Maybe it's still the same place but it doesn't feel like it. That said, I still love the vibe and think it's a fun place to visit if in the area. I'm not sure I'd make it a destination the way I used to when visiting the NYC. The staff is always great. The food quality seems to have diminished. But then again, my standards may have evolved. The pasta isn't home made or fresh. It was al dente but just standard store bought dry pasta. The sauce was so so. It didn't have the pep you'd expect from an arrabbiata (side $18). The veal Milanese ($54) tasted of inexpensive breading. The veal was well pounded and you could cut it with a fork. However, given they are charging higher prices for what's being served, neither of those disappointments are acceptable. The drinks are strong and there's no rush to get you out the door. The veggies were fresh and cooked perfectly. The antipasti was fresh and high quality. The highlight of the meal was the divinely fresh prosciutto and melon. All in all, a delightful experience. This is really a 3.5 review, but rather than rounding down I rounded up to 4 because of my long time love affair with it (and all of the people I've sent there who still go every time they visit the City!) read more

A little gem on the UES, come here often enough and they get to know you and your preferences pretty well - which helped in our case (we had a local that frequented that helped us secure both a spot and a special menu!). They crafted a family-style tasting menu that was pretty amazing. Old-school Italian spot - talk to Frankie for large parties. The family style was an interesting mix. Bread plate came with some antipasto meats and olives, fried calamari separate, seafood on shared middle plates; a small plate of mozzarella, prosciutto, fresh tomato, grilled peppers split out to each person individually. Octopus, shrimp, baked clams in the center to split (my picture only after a bunch was taken!). A number of different pastas split out and passed to each by plate with smaller portions - the ravioli and pesto gnocchi were ok; the penne vodka and spicy spiral pasta were much better. Lamb chop was excellent; the Chicken Parmigiana was just so-so (a bit cold by the time they served it), hash brown potatoes and veggies. A wholly underrated cut of Porterhouse steak - probably the best I've had in a while. And they love when you eat more like a good Italian mom/dad would be proud of! Best dessert on the shared tray by far was the Napoleon for dessert, I'm not a fan of the cheesecake, sorbets and coconut things but that Napoleon still I dream of! Probably the best one I've had in New York. Table spaces are crowded as they max out the tables and that means the waiters do bump into you every once in awhile, in my case it was a little more than frequent because I was sitting right beside the kitchen door.... Remind me not to do that in the future. Service was solid, constant replacement of plates and courses. And they definitely make sure you have enough! Water refill was needed more; the wine refill was spot-on. The other thing - felt a touch rushed at one point (they kept trying to clean off plates from courses that folks were trying to finish)... but they did appreciate that I tried to eat more steak (love that steak). It can be a bit pricey, if you're doing it like we did, but the individual dishes and a side to share aren't too bad for the Upper East Side Italian spot on the regular menu. The place has gone downhill since I was last there...over a year ago. Everything was great the service hasn't changed the ambience is the same...the place is still pricey...one thing they're good at is charging you. I usually order the same thing when I go there because I know what to get and what not to get that happens when you go for many years. My veal chop milenese used to arrive literally filling out the entire plate. This time...when it arrived...it was maybe 6 inches in diameter...1/3 the size from what it used to be. Screw that BS. we had a really lovely experience tonight. The ambiance is dimmed lights, fast servers, and old school Italian vibes. It was very cool to see the energy of the room and that it reeks from many years of history. The food itself was good. We started with the Caesar salad + zucchini blossoms, my friend and I split the chicken parm and the pasta sampler(which was on the smaller side). I'd say my favorite pasta of the 3 was the pesto. The chicken parm was good but a little dry. The space makes this spot worth it. I would love to know what's in their dessert platter because we thought we were getting a small sampler but ended up with 3 separate desserts. We tried the ricotta cheesecake, tiramisu and napoleon + their mini cookies. All delicious and huge shout out to the cheesecake which felt like a light version of regular cheesecake. The cookies reminded me of light caramel sugar cookies. I didn't try the napoleon but everyone seemed to like. Six of us went for a birthday dinner. Thought I was going to love this place. 9pm fashion Italian comfortable setting with a nice bar. The martinis were 24 each and 26 for Chardonnay, pretty pricey. You sit down and they give some cheese, olives and salami with the bread, a big plus. For apps we had baked clams, salads, melon with prosciutto and fried calamari. While all reasonable not so great. Clams were well done and dry, melon horrible prosciutto was ok and fried calamari so so. For dinner we had chicken parm, spaghetti bolognese, linguine vongole and pork chops. Pork chops were a hit, and for 32 well priced. Nexted was the clams over spaghetti, good, but who doesn't love butter and garlic, then bolognese. Chicken parm was not good, not sure how that can happen. It was a bday, so we had a piece of cakes. It was a chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream, almost frozen. There's a piano in the front, so a bit noisy and the bathroom is downstairs, so if you have someone that has trouble with stairs , be aware. What a fabulous experience here at campagnola. The place gives old school Italian vibes and is packed to the brim with people dining! Their menu is extensive and their servers know it like the back of their hand. The staff is attentive to detail from brushing crumbs off the table to making sure your glass is never empty. The food here is top notch. From the charcuterie board they start you with to the T-bone steak.. there's not much you can go wrong with here. I have so many wonderful memories from this restaurant in New York's upper east side, that it completely haunts me in a good way. I watched my children grow up here. So coming here tonight is like a walk down memory lane! Campagnola which is an Old School Italian restaurant is (still) serving amazing food that engulfs you with comfort. Our Caesar salads and calamari frite were these traditional dishes served the way "nonna" (look that word up) would prepare them; we loved these starters. I had pasta bolognese, my son had Veal Milanese and his bestie had Veal Parmigiana. All three entrees were delicious. The service was stellar and the ambiance was like being in Rome, without the 8 hour flight. I just love Campagnola, and have for decades. So, what turned this 5 Star restaurant into 4 Stars: The wine list! It was overwhelmingly expensive. This restaurant with this food, doesn't require a $400 bottle of wine; I'm sorry to say this but.............. I rarely get sticker shock, especially in New York. But I sure got it tonight when we let the Sommelier choose our wine. Did this put a damper on this dinner, No! Food - was just so mediocre. Really doesn't justify the prices as it all felt greasy and borderline old. Even the vegetables were oily. Service - we definitely felt pressure to order way too much food and service was almost too efficient (they pounced on everyone every time one person finished their plate). We started with a complementary small charcuterie with a few meats, Parmesan, and bread. The cheese is cut fresh right next to the bar. I'll be completely honest. The ambiance was nice and cozy and had cute Christmas decor but that's the only positive. The food was extremely mid - similar to Cheesecake Factory, nothing special at alllllll. So very overpriced. But the worst thing was the service-the manager rushed us from the second we sat down. Our dining experience felt like the establishment really didn't want us back ever again. We were ushered to our 5pm table in a timely manner - this is the only good thing I can say about the restaurant. The table was cramped with servers constantly roaring by, a noisy birthday party with unruly kids across from us and a fellow diner persistently bumping into my chair. Our waiter sped through the explanation of the specials and attempted to clear our dishes before we were done. As for the food, the linguine and clams was way too salty and the pasta special wasn't that special. To give you a sense of value, we asked for spaghetti and meatballs and were charged $24 for the pasta and $20 for the meatballs ($5 each). STAY AWAY. I have worked and managed restaurants, so I understand how it is a difficult business, so I generally only leave positive reviews and stay silent on not so good experiences, but this is probably only the second negative review that I have ever posted. read more

If you're into old school NYC restaurants where it's cool to see and be seen and you love when the matre d remembers you even though he fakes it, this place might be great for you. But if you care about good food, take a pass. This place has an old school NYC Italian vibe, with a very busy staff working hard to bring food to tables. They have the *worst* beer selection, which indicates exactly how much they care about the burgeoning craft beer scene and the interests of their customers. The menu is promising but the food is sloppily prepared despite the prices being on the very high end for the style of cuisine. A $15 chopped salad I shared with my wife was a tiny mini-mound of overdressed lettuce (attached). It would cost zero dollars to make this a good salad. My shrimp was overcooked and meager for $35. My wife's $38 veal was tough and my sister-in-law's chicken was a small portion for $35. I could keep going around the table, but suffice it to say, it was all disappointing. Overall, this is the typical NYC place that is coasting on it's reputation but the food is clearly lagging their reputation. But this restaurant survives because there are people who don't give a crap about the food and just want to go to a fancy "name" restaurant. Avoid if you actually care about food. read more

I went to Campagnola last night with my boyfriend to celebrate our 8 year anniversary. When we arrived we were asked if we would like to check in our coats, we declined. Then the waiter proceeded to take us to our table. The table was by the stairs to the bathroom & the space was pretty tight. My boyfriend is 6ft and I could tell he felt squished. The space is not enough for two people to sit comfortably, that should be revised. Looking back I should've definitely said something because we deserved better especially since we were celebrating our anniversary. We were started with a free charcuterie plate that had amazing salami & cheese. I really enjoyed it! We also asked for a bottle of Prosecco that was also yummy. The only downfall with that was that it was placed far from us so we couldn't serve ourselves as we pleased & the waiters were hard to flag down. For our appetizer we had the fried calamari, it came with the best fresh tasting marinara. Then for our entrees I had the chicken parmigiana & my boyfriend had the spaghetti bolognese. The chicken parmigiana is not on the menu but they were happy to make it, it did not come with a side I should've asked for some pasta to accompany it. My boyfriend shared his spaghetti bolognese with me, it was tasty & perfectly al dente. For dessert we opted for the chocolate cake. It was more of like a hard mousse, but it was very rich & the strawberries it came with were a great addition. Overall we had a pretty good time but if I'm honest I'm not sure I would return. Don't get me wrong the food is good but I felt something was off. Starting with the table we were sat at, to the lack of service our table was receiving in comparison to the table that was right next to us. Campagnola is a glimpse of New York from a time in the past. Old paintings and other artifacts adorn the walls, the lighting is dim, and the clientele looks to be mostly regulars. The servers do their best to ensure you have a positive experience and I believe the food is of high quality. When you sit down they give you a plate of bread, assorted olives, Parmesan (the good stuff!) and salami on the house. This is quite generous as many restaurants these days charge for bread and those that still offer it complimentary definitely don't give you anything this extravagant with it. Caesar salad- the salad was nicely dressed, not smothered in dressing. The dressing was flavorful and not too creamy or gloopy. Veal Milanese- I asked for veal scallopine Milanese and was very pleased with what I received. The order came with two thin veal cutlets topped with a lightly dressed arugula salad with cherry tomatoes. Chicken scarpariello- I was very impressed by this dish. The sausage was to die for, the chicken was roasted (I believe) and not overcooked. Overall, a true star. Very happy with it. Peach sorbet- To finish off the meal we tried a peach stuffed with peach sorbet. The sorbet was very creamy and it was fun that it was served in a peach half. Best kept secret in town. Ok well maybe it's not a secret. The food was delicious true Italian old school. For starters they serves a lovely plate of salami, pecorino cheese, olives and bread. What a strange, strange experience. Arrived on time for our reservation, felt immediately as if we were inconveniencing staff with our presence. We asked for more Parmesan slices and our server literally said no. They couldn't get us out of there fast enough. My husband got the orecchiette with sausage and it was a kids meal with practically no sausage. Food was fine, but the service was pretty bad. We have both worked in the restaurant industry and felt pretty dismissed as customers. They also confiscated our olive oil which was weird. Let me start off by saying: Yes. Campagnola is somewhat pricey...but then again...that is NYC! Been here a couple of times and the parking wasn't too bad...there was plenty around. We were greeted at the front very nicely and of course...we had reservations (which I believe is a must). They have a fantastic assortment of Italian dishes. It's a small joint, but it's cozy and has great ambiance to it. Both times we've been here it was busy and jammed...but yet comfortable. The caesar salads we ordered were plentiful and well prepared. They have a fine assortment of meat, fish, pasta and salad dishes. The chicken and potato dish I ordered was prepared very well and I'd say the plate was large enough. My Girlfriend had ordered a dish of linguini and shrimp. It was prepared a bit on the spicy side (the way she likes it) and it was delicious. They had a nice dish of bread on the table...but I felt it wasn't enough. You had to ask for a little bit more here and there. Plenty of red and white wines to choose from. And...we did have a few glasses of the house cabernet. A bit pricey though. For dessert...we ordered a couple espressos and a slice of the New York cheesecake. And...the dinner was done! Service was slow; the dishes were mediocre ie little to no sausage in the orecchiette pasta dish, salty veal saltimboca & the seafood pasta was sent back because what was supposed to be marinara sauce was not (but spicy). No special accommodation was made (yes of course taken off the bill). Waiter was not accommodating nor was the manager. Couldn't believe the service especially when manager said the dish was not supposed to be spicy. The wine selection not great and we paid $95-which was the least expensive bottle-for a $16 bottle! The first time I came to Campagnola was in 2019. It was terrific. The food was excellent, the service was amazing, they offered us some free snacks and drinks to taste. Overall, a wonderful family-style and cozy vibe. The second time was this year during Valentine's Day and the food was fine, but not worth the extremely high price, and the service was absolutely terrible. They were pushy, had no patience for my questions about the wine, basically told me that two wines taste "exactly the same" so it doesn't matter which one I get and they were pressuring us to order more food. From the moment we walked in the door we were greeted by at least five different service people very friendly with lovely accents. They brought a mini appetizer to the table of some flavorful, Parmesan cheese, and sliced salami with aged olives, and Italian bread. We ordered the mozzarella and tomato appetizer. It was very fresh and tender and they brought thick balsamic vinegar drizzle on top. We have the vegetable soup which has no pasta just pure delicious vegetables in the chicken broth. It was scrumptious.. we each had a salad. The chef salad was very crunchy and delicious, and the Caesar salad did not disappoint. . The shrimp scampi was plump and plentiful and fresh . The pasta Primavera, the vegetables were cooked perfectly, very flavorful, and the scallop mushroom and aged olives Spaghetti Abruzzi was warm and smoky and hearty. Totally delicious. Also, the olives really gave it a kick. We had the traditional tartufo the chocolate shell was very rich, and creamy and the ice cream refreshing. And even though we had decaffeinated cappuccino, which can be bitter, this foam was so creamy, it was not bitter at all. A dining experience to remember. read more
