I came here mid-December when I happened to be in the area. The place is fairly small, though there is an upstairs (where the bathroom is also located). I was sat downstairs right by the curtain in front of the door. I got the Veal Limone, which was fairly tasty, but thin, and for $50 I expected it to be more substantial and for there to be at least a few more potato wedges (though there was a lot of spinach) and maybe a bit nicer presentation. We sat upstairs and my wife and i shared the seafood special while they made my 94 year old mother and appetizer size pasta dish since she couldn't eat a whole dish. Best eggplant Parmesan ever!! my wife, and I stopped here for lunch. She had spaghetti and meatballs, and I had eggplant Parmesan. The spaghetti sauce was light but creamy and the meatballs were big and flavorful. My entree was a clam linguini pasta that felt like something I can whip up at home in 30 mins with boxed pasta. We were seated inside, upstairs, and didn't feel so comfortable as we were close to the restroom and waiters seem to be changing for dinner service while we were there. It had a comfortable atmosphere, perfect for friends to catch up over some food and wine. The waiters never rushed us out even though we were one of their last customers, which I appreciated. Even though they were busy, the staff quickly rearranged tables and chairs for us and found us space right on the sidewalk. We luckily had beautiful weather so it was great to be outside. We ordered an appetizer plus a couple different pizzas and a pasta dish to share. Everything was made to perfection: cooked well, with fresh ingredients and produce, flavorful sauces, and arranged beautifully. Prices were reasonable, if a bit high as is typical in NYC. I asked about the vegan options and I was shown all of the cheesed based items. I had to explain what vegan meant and then was shown gluten free items. I then just asked for the penne arbiritta When my food was brought to the table the waiter said gluten free for my meal. Having traveled to 18 out of Italy's 20 regions to learn about regional food, I am extremely particular about my Italian dining choices. We discovered this gem while in the area, and the online pictures caught my attention. I'm so glad we decided to give it a try! The owner and chef are from Naples, widely regarded as Italy's best food region, and it shows in every dish. The menu offered an incredible start: zucchini flowers in the Fritto Misto (mixed fried platter). Even though it's not zucchini flower season, they managed to serve fresh, flavorful flowers alongside arancini and eggplant crocchetta - each bite was perfect. Of course, we had to order pizza - Naples is synonymous with exceptional pizza. The classic Margherita was outstanding, and the truffle prosciutto pizza was a showstopper! We also tried vegetable sides, including broccoli prepared so perfectly that it instantly reminded me of Naples. The tender texture and rich flavor were reminiscent of true family recipes, which I later discovered were inspired by the owner's mother. The seafood pasta was another standout. Octopus tender calamari, and shrimp were cooked flawlessly, with the pasta beautifully coated in sauce - no shortcuts here! Finally, dessert: the tiramisu. Dinner at this low-key Italian restaurant in the UES was an overall positive experience, thanks to the amazing food -- however, there were some noticeable gaps in service that prevented the experience from being 5 stars. To start with the food, you can't go wrong with the tartufata pizza, a stunning Neapolitan-style with tomatoes, arugula, and piles of prosciutto. The spaghetti carbonara was also great, but equally as heavy as it is indulgently delicious. The complimentary bread was soft and fresh, so much so that we ordered multiple baskets of it while we waited (and waited...) throughout various parts of the meal. The waiting is my main complaint -- upon arriving, my partner and I were immediately seated, which we appreciated, but were not given menus until we were able to flag down a server about 15 minutes later. Then, we sat for another 15 minutes before we were able to ask someone to take our order. At the end of the meal, we sat for a while with empty plates before asking someone for the check. The restaurant wasn't particularly packed the night we were there either, so while I would consider returning for the high quality food, I would hope to not have a repeat of the service. read more

I had the Chicken Scarpariello special per our waiter's recommendation. The chicken breast was incredibly juicy and tender, but the dish overall was on the blander side. I also tried a bite of my friend's Carbonara, which to my surprise didn't come with an egg yolk on top, but thought it was delicious nonetheless. The ricotta cheesecake with blueberry compote was really good - not too sweet and rather light. The tiramisu was good as well. Service was quick and attentive. Not sure I want to share this authentic Italian gem with everyone 'cuz we're saving it for ourselves. Celebrating a weekday birthday in the city, we wanted some great, unpretentious food. Our server (everyone actually) Chris made us feel like part of the family. Reminiscing about growing up in Little Italy and living there for 40 years (us, not young Chris), we felt like we were having Sunday supper at Nonna's. Needless to say the pizza (with honey!), meatballs, octopus, braised short ribs - 2ways, all the pasta dishes, special olive oil, bread, Amarone, cappuccino, espresso...all of it was absolutely amazing. What a lovely lunch spot! We must have walked past Donna Margherita a million times and never went it. Today we did and boy were we pleasantly surprised with the food. We had: - Tartufata Pizza - delicious with prosciutto and arugula - Fried Zucchini Blossoms - very good but we peeled the fried dough off of them. I happened to be in the area, and was starving for an actual 'meal'. Yelp to the rescue. This place doesn't look like much, at first glance, and the location (smack dab on Second Ave, with cars headed towards the 59th Street bridge) isn't optimal, for those of us who like a sense of calm (and who may happen to loathe all the cars in Manhattan), but.... As I sat outside at my table, I got to observe who I think is the owner of the restaurant. I got a big kick out of him, and wondered if he might be Napolitano or maybe Sicilian? He was a classic NYCer, doing whatever it took to accommodate additional guests who wanted to sit outside. Let's just say there was a lot of ...er.... 'creative' musical chairs (and tables) going on. ;-) I also had to chuckle over their bathroom. Now, I've seen my share of NYC restaurant bathrooms. Some are very nice. Some have literal holes in the walls...the floors... Some are smaller than an airplane bathroom. But at Donna Margherita, on this particularly warm day, their bathroom felt like a literal furnace. It was so hot in the bathroom that I rushed to conduct my business. Even the liquid soap felt warm, when it came out of the dispenser. The bathroom is also in the back of the (very small footprint) second floor, so you must climb a narrow, winding set of stairs to get to the bathroom. It could pose a challenge for some older folk, I'd imagine... I got the sense that a number of folks from the neighborhood have become 'regulars' here (from the way they were interacting with the owner).
