This place was nothing but disappointing. When I walked in, the place wasn't busy and there was plenty of staff so I was seated immediately and asked what I'd like to drink. So far, so good. I requested water and a cup of coffee, left my bag on the chair, and said I'd be outside for a few minutes to make a phone call. I returned 5 minutes later to an empty table. It took another 10 minutes to finally grab the attention of the server to inquire about my drinks. No apology was offered for the delay. During that time, I saw two other tables of customers just get up and leave due to lack of service. I should've left as well. The drinks finally arrived and I placed my simple breakfast order and the meal arrived shortly after. That's when things really fell apart. I ordered eggs over medium and the whites were runny. The home fries were completely burnt. The bacon was burnt on the outside and squishy on the inside. The toast was white when I ordered rye. And not once was I offered more coffee. I paid the check, left 15% tip (unearned), and won't be returning. read more

This diner is convenient, usually relatively friendly, and serves great fries. But my husband got food poisoning there - bad tummy, felt ill for a day, etc - and I should have taken that as a warning. But I did not. Last week I ordered a bison burger. The next day, I was as sick as I have ever been. I lost three full days of work. And 6 pounds. I have never ever been so nauseated. I had chills (but no fever) that were ferocious. I literally could not eat, could not move, could not get warm, could not drink even water. It was beyond miserable, and it seemed to take forever to go away. I should probably have gone to the ER - except I could not move. You have been warned. I wish I had taken the hint when my husband got what we now know was mild food poisoning. Don't go to this diner. It's like playing roulette. You might be ok - or you might get awfully ill. I would not wish what I had on anyone. read more

I am usually a fan of diners. Good reliable food at an affordable price. Ordered the BBQ burger and an ice cream soda. The latter came quickly and was everything I wanted it to be. When the burger arrived, I cut it in half and noticed more juices than I expected, but thought it was the BBQ sauce. However once I took a bite the burger was pretty much raw in the middle. I asked for it to be cooked more, and when it came back it was a fraction of the original size. When I complained the owner got mad *at me* and took the plate away and just asked me to leave. Like it was my fault. Wouldn't even let me pay for the soda but not in the generous apologetic way but more with a "get out of here" demeanor. read more

A friend and I chose this diner at random before seeing a show at Lincoln Center. The menu seemed decent, basic diner food. A big mistake. We both ordered an omelette, her's with spinach mine with cheese and peppers. Both of our omelettes were dry and had no flavor. My omelette was missing the cheese. The fries were soggy and tasted as if they had been sitting around. On top of all of this, we seated in a corner where the staff obtained the cutlery, dishes and glasses. read more

The food was so...so . Didn't get to eat my food as the waiter had already taken my plate. My daughters and I were there for no more than 10 minutes flat!!! Unless you are ready to bring a ball and chain to hold down your plate you better inhale your food fast or the wait staff would grab your plate before you can finish your food.I picked up my toast and my fork to eat my omelet but the waiter had grabbed my plate to clean up the table despite my telling him that I was not finished. This place is a total rip off. I ordered kid's chicken fingers and french fries for my 6-year old child and was then charged the regular portion price. If a regular portion is three small pieces of chicken, I feel bad for someone who might really be hungry. That only upset me a little. What really made me angry was what I saw after my credit card had been run for payment. I was charged a fee for "non-cash payment." Really?!?!? There was no sign ANYWHERE stating that I would be charged a fee for paying with my credit card. Living in a city like New York, where EVERYONE pays with a credit card, I was floored to see this on my receipt. This place was a total one and done for me. I will not be returning. Nice option for late-night Saturday dining by the 72nd St subway 1/2/3 stop. Thought I'd have to head downtown to find somewhere that was open after an event at the JCC on 76th/Amsterdam but luckily my friends found this spot. Standard diner fare as far as I could tell. A-Ok place...we were starving after an early a.m. run so we stopped there for breakfast. My friend had breakfast/brunch special eggs with coffee & small cup of OJ. I had buttermilk pancakes that I almost didn't touch. It was just dinner food but kind of not welcoming with slow service. This is going to be just one time experience. Solid diner food. Exactly what you'd expect, not in the underwhelming sense, but in a comforting sense. Great service, friendly and fast. It's a typical NYC diner in the heart of the UWS. Yes the decor is super tacky but what good diner doesn't have tacky decor? The portions are huge, and it comes relatively quickly. Utopia has pretty standard diner fare. Had a turkey club and was pleasantly surprised at the portion of fries that came with it (I'm a fry-glutton, don't judge). Utopia came through - I had friends in town, and one had never been to a real New York diner. For very good breakfast, intense service and a clean, nice diner experience, this was the right choice (thanks, Yelpers). The bacon was crispy, no grease on the plate. The challah french toast with fruit was covered with fresh strawberries and bananas, fluffy and no grease on the plate. I was the only one who could finish all of the food. Coffee refills non-stop. This is worth the extra trek from my local for my next diner fix after this weekend. read more

The staff and owner of this diner were incredible rude! I walked in about 20 minutes early to meet a friend and asked if they had a seat near an outlet. They said the 2 tables with outlets were taken and that they didn't want people doing work in their diner. I assured them that we would be eating and drinking coffee as well. They said we could only stay one hour. What was really shocking, however, was not this information insomuch as the tone of how it was delivered. They did not make any attempt to accommodate or encourage us to stay. They also said it was a "busy time of day" but at least 1/3 of the tables were empty. read more

So we're here for a quick bite husband is always hungry. Looked inviting packed even. His burger was great as were his fries. Avoid any falafel sandwich or wrap. Don't care how much sauce I put on it it was dreadful. The falafel wasn't fresh just reheated. Sucks when a chef can't go to any diner and expect a decent meal. I have been going to Utopia for decades. It's one of the only surviving diners on the Upper West Side and I love their challah French toast. A couple of Sunday's I went in for breakfast and when I gave them my credit card I noticed on the receipt that they had added an additional charge because I was using a credit card. WTF? This is just so rude. I made them reverse the charge and paid with cash. I can't stand this kind of idiocy. read more

If zero stars was an option, I would choose it. This diner is literally the worst eating experience i have ever had. The staff is nothing but rude and inconsiderate. I went here to enjoy a nice and peaceful lunch, but upon arrival I realized it would be nothing like i expected. From the moment I was seated, I was extremely uncomfortable. Literally the most disgusting food I have ever had. Fried chicken had a weird sweet taste, the mashed potatoes were sour....had to have been made with sour milk. The food and service is okay for a diner, but the menu prices are pretty expensive and there is a hidden fee at the register if you pay with a credit card. It's okay in a pinch, but there's better food around at better prices. Also, I simply do not condone the idea that I should pay more for using a credit card in 2018, especially without it being better advertised. I grew up in this neighborhood and for some godforsaken reason my mother comes here every day for breakfast. The food is greasy and overpriced but most of all the staff is rude especially a character named "Angelo". This individual seems to thrive by making sarcastic comments to senior citizens while stacking items on their bill. Two eggs, toast, potatoes and coffee $14? Doesn't make sense. I've been to Utopia several times because my kids love the chocolate chip pancakes. I've never had a problem getting a table, and I've always found the service to be friendly and efficient. Good atmosphere, too. Unfortunately though, I have yet to eat anything delicious at Utopia. Not being a fan of chocolate chip pancakes, my order history to date includes several flat cokes, some waxy home fries, a watery breakfast wrap, a sloppy burger, and a surprisingly tasteless plate of Eggs Benedict. The food cart on any NYC street corner will give you a better breakfast than anything I've ever had at Utopia. (That's both a criticism of Utopia as well as an upvote for eating breakfast from randomly chosen food carts, something I happen to like doing.) The next time I'm tempted to go to Utopia, I think I'll save the money and make chocolate chip pancakes at home. read more

I love Utopia. The service is so so good. The second I walk in, they greet me by my name and bring me a newspaper. My breakfast comes insanely fast and the second I need a coffee or water re-fill, they are on it! A great UWS institution that I hope stays in the neighborhood forever. read more
