The downside to the self check out is that if you try to buy postage or a stamp size label, it will get stuck in that slot. And when it gets stuck and you try to tell the employees, they will likely say "Yeah, that happens" (and do nothing about it) like they did to me. The slot that spits out the larger labels, those for packages, works fine. And if the handle of the package drop bin is stuck it means it is full. Just leave it on the desk near a clerk and don't wait in line. Moral of the story- use the self check out for packages. For stamps, buy them at usps.com or at a drug or grocery store.

But lo and behold, an exception is found at ZIP code 02138! And to think the skeptics warned us to be wary of a ZIP code beginning with zero (0). This US Post Office graced me with the swiftest post office experience known to humankind: I entered to ship a box and ship a box I did. Some may say that the pleasure and speed were a gift of the self-service kiosk I used. Indeed no human interaction was required. A mere machine took the addresses and dimensions and weights and masses. But as we know soon the machines will be the humans and the humans will be the machines or something along those lines; of course someone once noted that the last shall be first, and the first last. Five stars for a Post Office?…read more Yes. Do they mess things up? Sure. Are they highly efficient for what they do? Absolutely. Most of my experiences in Post Offices involve huge lines and dawdling employees. The folks here seem to actually want to get through the line quickly. Whenever I come to ship something out they're helpful, friendly, and if treated with respect give it back in return. (Though I'd imagine they wouldn't hesitate to put the smack down if you step up. This is East Cambridge after all) The hours are a bit wonky but they open early enough (7:30) that I have plenty of time to stop in before work to pick up packages/stamps/whatever. In this neighborhood I think USPS is the best shipping option. Apparently in a past life East Cambridge was a bit shady so UPS/FEDEX refuse to leave packages at the door. This means a trip out to Somerville ($45 cab ride) or several days in rerouting (UPS sends it through Rhode Island, natch) to get your package. But the Post Office will hold it for you in the convenient office. Works for me! Sadly it seems like the Postal Service is slowly dying. I know many people could care less but it's a part of our history and really, you get a lot for your 42 cents. Until such time they will get my business.

My item was going to be shipped in a medium size priority mail box, and I grabbed a package of bubble wrap as well. Pat came over and asked if my item was over 2 or 3 pounds. I wasn't sure so he weighed it, and said it would be cheaper to use a box that wasn't flat rate. He also said he had packing materials another customer left if I didn't mind using those. (The materials were in brand new condition). He didn't charge me for the box, and with the money I saved on the bubble wrap and the shipping, it was about $8 less! Dang. That's a nice lunch at Subway. Hat tip to postman Pat. Wonderful service.

Some people left the line because they became impatient. When I asked her what the cheapest shipping option was, she said "I don't know". She refused to tell me the different shipping options, and picked one that was rather pricey. I asked if she knew when the package would arrive, and once again, she said "we don't know anything about overseas packages". Surely, after paying so much for shipping, there would be tracking included. There is a UPS store a 10 min walk away. You might want to consider going there, or going to a different USPS location.
